Quest #2: Establishing a Personal Base: Description: Malls are big, and there's more than enough room for every Mall Rat to make their home there, and your home can always use improvements! Collect some supplies, find a safe space to sleep through the night, and, well. Make yourself at home away from home.
Goals:
Step 1: MAKE IT HABITABLE.
You as a survivor need to find something that will work as a bed, something to store your personal items in, and a way to get some privacy for changing. (No washrooms, because no store in the mall has enough space to dedicate an employee-only bathroom). That and people keep taking your furniture to help reinforce the barricades... Looks like it's time to replace everything again.
Roll 1d10. If even, you succeed. If odd, don't worry! Just roll again till you get even. If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 2: MAKE IT DEFENSIBLE.
Use any loose items you can find to protect the front of the store you've set up in. While most of the mall is safe, there are some shops that aren't, and you've got to prepare for the worst.
Roll 2d4 until they match. If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 3: MAKE IT DEFENDABLE.
With another survivor-- played by a player or one you NPC-- check the strength of your defenses.
Both roll 1d10. The higher roll determines the outcome. If you are NPCing, the first roll is yours, the second roll is the NPC's. If the barricades stay up, you get 1 bonus Arcade Token for completing the quest.
Otherwise repeat Step 2 until your dice matches, then try Step 3 again to make sure it can withstand the "assault."
If you have to roll more than 3 times, consider it done, and you can move on!
Step 3: MAKE IT LIVABLE.
There is an IKEA in the mall, and that means you get to raid it for furniture! ...Easier said than done, though.
Find the kind of furniture you want! Feel free to just RP it out and pick what you want! Escape the labyrinth: Roll 2d6 till they match. Find the boxed version you need to put together: Roll 1d20 till you get an even number. Put the furniture together: Roll 1d20 till a 15 or higher.
If you have to roll more than 5 times, consider it done! Congratulations!
First time doing this quest? Please write a minimum of 100 words for 1 Arcade Token.
Repeating? Minimum word count jumps up to 300 in order to claim your 1 Arcade Token.
Feeling wordy? Go above and beyond the bare minimum for additional tokens! You need to meet this word count while doing the quest, so no going back to pad your quest to claim tokens! These token bonuses do not stack, so you can't write 100 words to claim 1 token, then add 300 words to claim 2 more tokens.
500 words = 2 Arcade Tokens. 600 words = 3 Arcade Tokens. 700 words = 4 Arcade Tokens. 800 words = 5 Arcade Tokens.
Whistle While You Work: You can absolutely work on living quarters with someone else, even if you don't intend to stay with them. You will have to both roll for your own successes, but it does mean you get good company!
Now that he was awake and active, July thought it was a good time to try and make this side of the craft store a little bit more like home. It was one thing to live in a given area, some sort of personalization he felt would make this by far more bearable in terms of trying to find some kind of stability and normalcy in the aftermath of the infectious outbreak. He wouldn't dare drink from the tap-water, he was by far too paranoid for that.
It looked like the screen he'd snagged from another store had been run off with. Again. Granted he'd taken it to begin with, having been to shy to change around anyone that might happen to pass by. "Hey I'll start with looking for something to use as a our new 'changing' area, since apparently nothing is sacred." July added gesturing vaguely with a wave of his hand at the imaginary changing room.
With a bit of luck, he actually managed to track down the black and tan screen, dragging it into place giving their sleeping bag some kind of privacy. They needed a few more items, but it was a start at least.

Jay had been packing things up to put aside in case they needed to leave in a hurry. He looked at the sleeping bag as he rolled it up, remember some camping trips he had with his husband and their friends. He'd always associated sleeping bags with fun... not a necessity for comfort. He popped back into reality as he heard July talking, realizing he had missed most of anything he had said. He looked up to him blankly, decoding what he could be talking about with the simple sentence or apparently nothing is sacred. Noticing the screen gone and knowing how the other felt about showing off his attractive taken body, Jay sighed and tied the sleeping bag so it wouldn't uncoil. "Would you rather them not barricade and those.. things... get in here?" He asked, tossing his sleeping bag with their belongings then moving to work on July's sleeping bag. "We can get another one... and maybe we could find or make some pillow toppers to make this floor less... flat." He added as he finished and toss the other sleeping bag by the other then shoving their stuff into their hiding spot.
He stood up and stretched, sliding his arms around July's waist. " Well, let's go." He released the other and grabbed his bag, heading out to look for some things for them to use. He let Anders go search on his own in the safe parts of the mall, leaving to do the same. Anywhere he looked seemed to be barren of the items he thought they'd need. With a sigh, the strawberry blond returned to July. "Nice, you got a screen... I couldn't really find anything we could use." He explained as he rubbed his neck, feeling disappointed in himself for not being able to provide for his lover.
He helped July place the screen by their sleeping area then taking a sip of his water. He then looked to the front of the store. "We should really barricade the doors and windows in case... " He sighed, moving to go gather something that they could use.

Jay pushed some of the furniture in the store that they couldn't or weren't using, to the front. He repeated this till there wasn't anything large to move then he looked around for anything else he could use. He noticed some fabric and stuffing that had been trapped under some of the fallen things in the store. Shoving those in with his things, he continued to look for anything that could help with the barricade.
He noticed some of the smaller cabinets weren't actually connected to each other with nails or screws. So one by one he moved those other to the front then working to reinforce it a bit. Wiping the sweat from his brow, he'd hoped that it would be good enough. He slipped out to look at it in the front, sighing. There was so many openings that intruders could easily get through. He looked to July, moving to grab his hand and high five it. "Tag, you're it... I'm going to work on the pillow toppers.... fill in the holes of our barricade. I already did the heavy stuff." He explained. moving to go take a seat.

July felt a measure of guilt as he looked up when the other spoke, and reminded him that the various pieces of furniture that were run off with often times was needed to act as a defense. "No I understand. I shouldn't even be that upset about it." He watched the other finish packing up their little sleeping area, and hiding what few worldly possessions the pair did still have. "A way to pad our makeshift bed sounds wonderful.” He added with a small sigh, idly rubbing at his back.
When the other stood beside him, and slid an arm around him he leaned into the others frame and closed his eyes for a brief moment. "Yeah, we should get moving huh?" He smiled faintly; a measure of calm overcame him. Even if they had bad s**t going on outside the safety of their little retreat, he could at least take comfort in small victories like their working together.
Once they met back up briefly, and given Jay's disappointed tone, July quickly shook his head. "It's alright! We'll just have to look around at some of the other spots in the mall, I know they aren't using every last drop of furniture." He added pursing his lips slightly in consideration. If they really did get a few pillow toppers, maybe sleeping wouldn’t be as cumbersome. Sleeping bags were great and all, but the reprieve from a hard floor was a promising thing to look forward too.
When his hand was hi-fived he grinned just a tad. "Let's see how I do, sure!" He slipped outside, and set to work trying to fill in the holes, glad he didn't have to drag all the heavier items around. Instead he focused on the details, trying to fill in the holes by arranging things neater.
Instead, he accidentally knocked something over Jay had just finished putting into place. Looking sheepish he glanced around before carefully going back to rearranging things. At the very least any intruders might get buried under random falling objects. That was something...even if it wasn't exactly what either had intended.
He'd just have to try a little harder.

Okay seriously, he was trying to actually make progress not knock things over at random. July took a step back, and reexamined the way everything was put together.
Frowning, he re-stacked a few of the cabinets, and fit them together a bit nicer. He'd need to work at this some more, the pieces weren't all fitting together, and he needed another thing to fill one of these holes.
There. He actually got a few things moved and arranged properly to actually section off their part of the store. It wasn't as good as having their own room with four solid walls, but no one would be climbing into their space while they slept, they'd have to go through the makeshift passage leading in. It still looked a bit flimsy..maybe they should add a bit more to it?
