The market was bustling with people. Every kind of Nightmare imaginable was there buying fresh foods of all sorts, planning out their meals for the next few days. Ember, however, was there for another reason. The Bapho quietly slunk through the droves of people, glancing around between the breaks of bodies to find one of the stalls selling gardening goods.

She needed to spruce up her place, bring some life in to it ... but for weeks her plants had been turning black and curling in on themselves. It was a little embarrassing, but Ember was determined to get it right, one way or another.

Ember pushed her way through a few people standing around seemingly doing nothing, offering an apology to them as she passed, and on the other side -- there it was! A cute, green stall full of life. Beautiful flowers were potted as examples of what one could accomplish if they only tried.

So why was it so damn hard for her to make her plants thrive?

Ember tucked her hairs behind her ears and padded over to the person at the counter and piped up. "Uhm, excuse me," she started. "Could you help me ... ? I'm trying to grow some plants, and I'm just not having any luck ... do you have any suggestions for beginners plants that I can try and grow before moving on to something more complicated?"

Corben loved market season. The people that gathered during business hours were always interesting, and he always ended up buying a few things when he managed to get a visit in. But by far, his favorite thing at the market, was the array of fresh produce available. Recently, some stalls had even taken to selling their seeds or starter plants for customers to try their own hand at growing a small garden, which was what had piqued his interest this particular visit.

He'd been examining a newly sprouted plant when he heard the question... it wasn't directed at him, but the worker apparently hadn't heard and went on to help a different customer that was buying something. He blinked, then grinned, the opportunity to share his expertise was not something he was going to pass by. He scooted a bit closer, into her line of vision.

"If you don't mind, I can help! They're a little busy today, haha." Still grinning, he shrugged and cocked his head to the side to indicate the workers. "I'm Corben, by the way."

Ember looked a little flustered as her questions were ignored. She didn't seem upset, or angry at all. She had been prepared to wait patiently for her turn, turning her little split-hoof feet inwards once more, swaying gently from side to side to pass the time. But it wasn't long until someone's voice reached her ears.

Ember's whole body perked, turning her head towards the voice to see a fellow Bapho, and her lips parted in a smile of greeting.

"Oh, ahm ... yes! Thank you, that would be appreciated. I take it you know something about plants, then?" Ember turned her whole body towards him so as not to be rude. "I'm Ember ... it's nice to meet you, for however brief or long our meeting shall be!"

He nodded enthusiastically, grin only widening. "Nice to meet you as well, Ember! That's a nice name." He reached up to put his hair back in place, then laughed a little. "You could say that! I'm a botanist, actually!" He motioned for her to follow him to a part of the stall further down, then carefully made his way around the other customers. Perhaps the only downside to market time was that hooves did not grip cobble very well... one unexpected bump might knock him clean over.

"Beginner plants are pretty easy to find! Do you have any experience with gardening? Oh, I should ask, what exactly are you looking to do with the plants?" Once there he stopped and faced her again, one hand absently resting on his belt, the other waving slightly as he spoke.

"A botanist? Ember blinked. "What are the chances!" actually, the chances were pretty good of running in to someone who had an interest or study in plants at a plant stall, but Ember wasn't thinking of that when she said her thoughts aloud.

Ember tried to pull her short hair back in to a small pony tail, as she often did when she was thinking to keep the hair off her face, but forgot that her hair was too short, and gave a soft sigh, though it seemed as if in reference to Corben's question. "Well," she started. "Not really, unless you count the numerous dead plants sitting on my bedroom window's ledge. I had a couple of growing vines that were doing really well and starting to sport flowers, but either my roommate hates plants and tossed them in to the bath tub to drown, or my plants hate me so much they've been committing suicide. The rest have been shriveling up and turning black ... honestly, I'm at a loss at this point. But the plants are mostly for pleasure ... to give me something to meditate on, to help soothe my anxieties. But ... I feel like I either over-water them or under-water them. My one friend looked at one of the plants and said it had root rot, but ... was that just a bad plant or was that my fault?"

He hummed a bit as he listened to her description of what was going on... Oh, those poor plants... He nodded again, one foot tapping the ground a little as he thought... "Wellllll... it's very important to know what kind of plant you have, and what light and watering requirements they have. For a newbie plant raiser, I'd suggest something that doesn't require a lot of maintenance!" He clapped his hands together, then turned to look over the selection real quick... After a moment, he uttered a little "ah!" and then picked up a small potted succulent.

"These make pretty good starters! This is a succulent! They're fairly low maintenance, you should water it lightly every 3-4 days, so about 2-3 times a week... And just a misting! The soil doesn't need to be soaked or anything. I'd recommend just using a spray bottle on these guys since they'll be indoors." He nodded, free hand making motions to imitate a spray bottle as he spoke. "But there are some others that make good indoor plants if succulents aren't your thing!"

Ember gave a soft laugh as the fellow Baphomet explained succulent care to her. Was that really what she had been doing wrong? Soaking the soil? It was odd to think that plants didn't like to have their soil wet. A light misting? How was she supposed to know that? And more importantly ... why the heck didn't she just ask in the first place when she bought her last. Oh. I dunno. Five succulents.

"I don't think succulents are really my thing, as pretty as they are ... we kind of have. An imbalanced relationship, I suppose you could say. Perhaps I'd have better luck with something I don't already have an awful track record with?"

He blinked, alright, so succulents wouldn't work out. He wondered just how black her thumb was if succulents weren't going to cut it... "Okay, then what sort of plants have you had the most luck with? Do you remember any names?" Corben tilted his head, pleasant smile still in place. He would find a good plant for her, one way or another! Hopefully she knew what she'd had luck with in the past, or this was going to get very, very difficult...

Ember pulled on her cheek and continued to tug on her skin in thought, hand moving it around in circle motions as she thought to herself quietly. "I've haaad ... succulents. Different cacti ... auster violets -- WHICH HEY -- at least those lived for a while, and I like that they have a wide range of colours for their flowers. So I quite like thoooose ... " Ember's hand came down around her chin as she rubbed at the curved bone in thought before tweaking her own chin and leaving her thumb resting against the underside of her chin. "I don't know if that really helps you at all. But it's the most I can remember about the plants I've tried. Oh. And a rapid growing, flowering vine ... which was back at the Academy. And my roommate drowned it cuz she was jealous of how pretty it was. Ever since then it's like I've had a curse on me where I can't grow plants."
