Where: The Spiral Eye of the Wild Hunt
When: During the Hunt, prior to (I want my Baby Back)! Maneki defeats Lorata and then is caught by Kursha.
PostPosted: Tue Aug 18, 2015 6:10 pm

Swamps were icky. Maneki sat down on his butt and shook his leg, trying to get rid of the thick mud that encased his foot. Frowning, he looked around, feeling small in comparison to the gnarled trees. Small and alone and very, very vulnerable. Stryke and Mermmy hadn't come back... And then when things couldn't get worse, Zeffer told him to wait while he went ahead and scouted. Maneki wanted to cry, but he kept a stiff upper lip and nodded as the blueblood left. Alone, he sniffled softly, rubbing his eyes with his dirt crusted wrist.

As much as he wanted to go and find Derd, it was better to remain there where Derd knew he was. Bakao would be proud when she learned how well her charge had listened! Thoughts like that kept his motivation and spirits high.

He didn't know it, but not far behind the rest of the royal forces were approaching fast and hard.

Lorata huffed in annoyance as she trudged down the path, Meduma drifting along behind. In all honesty, if it hadn't been for the TPS, she probably wouldn't have realized this was the very same place they'd first begun their hunt, but she'd been very adamant about seeing it after watching Kursha shake it around and the damage had been done. Even if the life detector wasn't terribly pinpoint in its directions, the map the machine had charted out was pretty clear. She just couldn't believe the stupid rebels had gotten around them so well that they had to backtrack so far.

Well, whatever. She and the Captain had split up now and she knew they were close. There was no way the rebels could cheat their way out of their fates for much longer! And then maybe the greenblood would do something heroic again. She hoped. Another huff, and she started towards the narrow path she remembered. If the rebels weren't there, they would have left some kinda sign. She was sure of it. She was...completely right!

Lorata's face lit up at the sight of movement ahead, and she was so excited by her own success that it didn't even cross her mind to alert Kursha. It was only a kid, anyway, and she didn't even see a lusus! She and Meduma had caught one! Laughing, the seadweller tugged her goggles back down over eyes and hurried forward to close the distance between them.

"Hey! You can stop running!" Her lusus' heads spread out behind her with an intimidating hiss and Lorata smiled. "Your story's all over now."

"Derd, where are you?" Maneki whined softly below his breath. So much for 'be right back'. Maybe when this was over they could take a big bath and have some yummy snacks. That'd make up a lot for the pain he was going through now.

A rumbling sound made him whirl on heel. Eyes wide, the mutant watched tensely at the foliage. It was moving. Someone was coming! Usually brave, the terribleness of the night fully weighed down on his limbs. Maneki couldn't move. He was rooted in place, his heart attempting to flee out of his chest for him. Lorata burst into view with a massive jellyfish-snake lusus. He wished to cry and scream so that his lusus would swoop in and save him. Wouldn't that be grand?

Memories of the pamphlets and lectures about highbloods raced through his memory. Highbloods (Teal - Purple) are ones who enjoy the privileges of society. This does not make them bad, but it can make them arrogant. They pride themselves in being civilized and can at times be unwilling or even violent in the face of change. Maneki watched as the lusus hissed. There was no visible mutant blood, yet. If any of it spilt, would that giant monstrosity attempt to eat him?

While his legs refused to move, his mind raced a million miles per hour.

"W-wait! Stop Stop!!" Maneki held out both arms, hunching down his head with his palms spread to Lorata, "What are you doing?! Are you going to just attack me recklessly? That's so.. So crude."

His eyes blazed (or were those unshed tears?). Resting both hands at his sides, he tilted his chin up at her, "We're trolls, damn it! We are talented highbloods. Sure, we're on different sides of the conflict, but we are still civilized and there is only ONE way to handle such a PROBLEM properly and efficiently." He nodded firmly and spread his arms wide with emphasis, "Bloodshed and chase are for commoners ONLY. WE ARE THE CREAM OF ALTERNIA!"

What way could they solve this problem, then? What grand, illustrious, and not-at-all savage manner would work? Oh, he was running on empty, spurting whatever nonsense came to mind, "R-rock paper scissors! A battle of wit and mind!" Uh... Well.. It had been good up to that point, maybe the conviction would shock the purple blood into accepting it. After all, he masqueraded as a tealblood, so he too was ~civilized~. He held out one fist, his eyes locked with Lorata's.

Lorata stumbled to a stop on reflex as the rebel raised his voice, and she couldn't help casting a wary glance around to see if there was some reason she was supposed to wait. As her gaze flickered back to him, she gave a startled blink. Crude? How was she the crude one? A little offended but even more baffled, the seadweller lifted her goggles away from her eyes again and stared, practically hanging on every enthusiastically spoken word. By the time he'd finished, her cheeks had gone a bit purple.

"I wasn't just going to attack you!" She protested hotly, thrown off by his conviction and completely unwilling to be in the wrong here. "We're not commoners." She tossed her head in a move that normally would have sent curls bouncing but couldn't now thanks to all the mud caked into her hair, and waved MeduMa down as she took the last few steps to approach her opponent. Lifting her chin and holding his gaze, she held out her own fist.

"I hope you're ready to lose, Rebel!" Lorata started the game with an eager "Rock, Paper, Scissors" and threw scissors for her first move, sure that it was the most clever choice for dealing with such sneaky enemies. Glancing down to see what he'd thrown meant breaking their staring contest, but that wasn't the battle she was interested in.

It... It worked? Holy Globsmucker it WORKED. Maneki wanted to be stunned, but he had to keep rolling with this. Their fists bounced in the air as he called out in unison, "Rock, Paper, Scissors!" He threw paper. She seemed straight forward and sturdy, and would throw rock surely.

"Scissors?" Maneki felt sweat trickle down his neck. This plan was rapidly evaporating. How long could he keep her stalled with a simple game? As long as I need to make a plan. Smiling, undaunted by his lost, he forced a laugh and felt proud when it didn't sound too fake, "I'm impressed! A straight, sharp attack. Not even an inch of relenting! You must be a very busy and intense Seadweller with no time to spare. I'm honored to face such an ILLUSTRIOUS opponent."

Maneki nodded again and held out his fist, "First to three wins, my friend. Rock, Paper, Scissors!" He threw rock this time, hoping she would throw scissors again from his compliment.

Lorata had known that winning this game would be inevitable, but she felt a flash of pride anyway as the rebel threw paper. She'd definitely outsmarted him! She resisted an urge to bounce with glee, because she didn't want to seem too childish in such a civilized battle of wits, but she did give a delighted giggle as Maneki laughed, soaking up all the praise he was offering. It was too bad there weren't more rebels like him, nice and reasonable highbloods who knew how things worked and maybe had a chance of doing the right thing eventually. Maybe it was just the mutants muddying things up, giving lowbloods bad ideas and setting things on fire.

She'd have to think on that later. For now, she mustered up a hint of solemnity and gave the sagest of nods. "Very busy usually. I have a very important mission, after all!" She hummed thoughtfully and then narrowed her eyes a little, squinting at his face. "You know I've been thinking. You're a very civilized highblood, right? How come you're on the wrong side?" She tilted her head in question, then blinked and stuck her fist back out with a little "Ah, right!"

There were only two more wins to go until they were done here and she could take him back as a prisoner! There'd be plenty of time for him to explain then! Hurrying into the game, she threw paper and then immediately lit up as she saw what he'd picked. "That's two for me!"

Losing? Oh, this was really not good. Not at ALL good. Still he kept the bravado facade and laughed, "Well, I mean isn't it obvious why I would be on the wrong side?"

Yes, so obvious that Maneki couldn't figure out a response. Not a single one. Falling dry, for the first time, he gaped at Lorata and then laughed, "Because I am a rebel too!" Without thinking too much of how mean this would be, he shoved Lorata into the mud and turned on heel to book it out of there.

Where was his dad!? CRAP!
