when: during the wild hunt, as the rebels try to distract the royalists and get the mothergrub to safety
what: maneki is captured by kursha, zeffer doesn't take kindly to it

      [+] Kursha Vidari

“Tch. What a mess.”

Nudging the mutantblood with his foot, Kursha flipped him onto his back. It was no good if the kid died, drowning in swamp water. He glanced over at where Lorata was similarly sprawled in the reeds. If she had looked dishevelled before, there was no question of it now. Her curls were lank and she was covered from prong to hoof in mud. “Oi, you all right?” he asked. Putting one foot on Maneki's chest to keep him pinned, he reached down to help Lorata up. The courtesy came less from a place of kindness or good manners, and more from a desire to get her up as quickly as possible. He did not want to have to haul two kids back to camp.

Once she was on her feet, Kursha removed his weight from Maneki. Instead he pointed the muzzle of the rifle down at his head. “Listen up, kid. Here's how it's gonna be: you play nice and cooperate? No one gets hurt. You piss me off...? Well then, I can't promise you won't get a new hole in your cute, little thinkpan.” He swept his thumb across the safety to show he was serious. There was an audible click and he grinned. “Capisce?”

Zeffer's boots sloshed frantically in the mud as he backtracked. He really hadn't meant to wander off as far as he had, but after squeezing past the last bramble thicket, the swamp had opened up again, allowing for further exploration. The thick brush meant that Zeffer had to forge ahead alone, and he'd tried to be careful about reassuring Maneki before disappearing into the greenery. He knew being separated from Byakko again so soon probably wasn't easy for him, but spreading out had been the most efficient way to go. They had formed a system, a plan for if any Royalists got too close, but judging from the sound of distant screams, something had gone very wrong.

The blueblood wouldn't have thought twice about it, if he weren't so sure it was Maneki's voice. The vicinity was full of trolls from both sides, each making a mad dash to snuff out or evade the other, but this sound had been different; its shrillness confirmed that it belonged to someone young, and Zeffer was certain of its familiarity. Though he hoped desperately that it was some false alarm, his stomach twisted further with each step, and he shoved recklessly through the foliage as he worked his way back. As tempted as he was to call out, he bit his tongue, not wanting to give himself away in the process of a rescue attempt.

He was panting heavily when he reached the last clump of thick brush, not hesitating for a second as he began to shove through. When he finally glimpsed the scene that was occuring up ahead, his mind swam with rage, and he began to rush. Zeffer exploded from the brush with a roar, mere seconds after Kursha had issued his instructions. With his hair slicked back and his face and front smeared and coated with swamp mud, he was a fearsome sight to behold. His mismatched eyes glared out from his disguise, glistening with all the panic and anger that had taken hold after seeing Maneki in such a perilous spot.

Without wasting a moment to stop and comment, he thundered toward the greenblood, teeth bared in a snarl as he sought to forcefully kick him away.

A sudden primal scream jump-started Kursha's senses. His finger involuntarily twitched against the trigger, and he whirled to face the source of the sound. In the first few moments, the figure rushing towards him was unrecognisable: a hulking beast rearing up out of the reeds, covered in mud. The high-arching horns which should have clued him in, only added to its fearsome appearance. Kursha's eyes widened. His mouth curled into a snarl.

“Move!” he snapped at Lorata. That was as much as he could get out. The troll-shaped bogbeast was almost on top of him, and there was no time to give instruction. Lurching to the side—he almost lost his balance as his boot stuck in the mud—he swung the rifle up onto his shoulder. He planted his feet. Water sloshed up around his knees. Instinctively, without taking aim, Kursha pointed the barrel of the rifle towards the target. His eyes found the sight, as they did the sight found his target. There was a crack, and a burst of light from the end of the gun.

Even the blast of the gun wasn't enough to make Zeffer flinch, as pain blossomed hotly from the fresh bullet wound. The shot landed just beneath his right collarbone, and blood poured down his chest, mixing with the dried mud and splattering everywhere. Despite the pain, the blueblood was undeterred, and quickly closed the distance between himself and Kursha, interested in revenge now, along with Maneki's safety. Here was their greatest enemy, almost alone, save for a single ally and her lusus. The opportunity was too good to let go.

He grabbed the barrel of the gun and attempted to wrench it away again, another feral shriek tearing itself from his throat as he snatched one baton from his belt. It began to crackle immediately as he jammed it to its highest setting and swung, trying to use the gun to yank Kursha closer.

"Get the ******** off of him!!!" He finally managed to speak, the baton connecting with his opponent's horn before Zeffer begen to shove Kursha back.

Blue blood. A stun baton. Something triggered in Kursha's memory. No time to ponder that thought however. The electric club racing towards his head demanded all his attention. He reeled back, but not fast enough. There was a crack as it struck against his horn. The sparks bounced harmlessly off the cartilage. Aside from being temporarily disoriented, he was unhurt.

Hearing the voice, at last recognition settled in. Kursha's tense expression vanished and a feral grin spread across his face. The troll before him was no less terrifying, but at least he had an idea of what he was dealing with. Who he was dealing with.

“Well, hey Zeff!” Kursha exclaimed, grappling the blueblood for the gun. He shifted his right hand from the trigger up to the barrel. Then he released his left. “Nice to see you too!” Despite efforts to keep his tone friendly, there was strain in his voice. He grit his teeth. The muscles in his arm burned, as the muzzle of the rifle quivered violently between Zeffer and empty air.

Reaching around behind his back with his left hand, Kursha found the hilt of his assault knife. His fingers closed around it. Everyone always under-estimated him at close-range. They thought that was his weakness. Stupid. They were just giving him a bigger target. Kursha slid the blade out of the sheath. He would be damned if he had not learnt anything from his fight with Rasali.

Making eye contact with Zeffer, Kursha winked. “Ya mind maybe getting your prongs off my property?” He did not wait for a response. In a flash of motion, he brought the knife around and drove it into the blueblood's arm.

Lorata spat out a mouthful of swamp water, seething as she pulled herself up and beyond caring about whether it was civilized now that her opponent had very literally shoved that idea into the mud. Screaming on the way down had been a bad idea as far as that went, but as always it had had its intended effect beyond releasing frustration. She could see MeduMa stirring nearby, a few tentacles hissing in wordless displeasure, and more importantly the Captain had come to make sure the boy got what he deserved for attacking her.

"I'm fine," the seadweller sniffed, grabbing Kursha's hand and letting him help her back to her feet. She glared at Maneki with quiet disgust as her leader laid down how things were going to be, but it was clear she was just waiting for a chance to lay into him herself. Unfortunately, that wasn't a chance she was going to get, because almost immediately after Kursha stopped speaking, there was a roar. Lorata was stumbling backwards even before she registered that she'd been told to move, eyes wide with horror.

What was it? Some kind of bog beast!? The fight was almost too much to take in, all gunshots and the crackle of electricity, but as the men struggled over the gun, she found herself panicking. Kursha could kill anything, she was sure of it, but if somehow he couldn't..."M-MeduMa!" The lusus surged into motion with the sound, and now all of her heads were alert and angry, their many voices rising together in a jumbled message of pure threat.

The jellyfish loomed behind Kursha, and one after another her heads lashed out around him, fangs seeking purchase wherever it might be found on their enemy. Even as Kursha stabbed down towards the arm holding his rifle, a head followed, seeing the clear target for what it was.

"Once you step the ******** off my friend." Zeffer hissed, tone livid as Kursha's grimace shifted into a grin of familiarity. He was too hellbent on wiping it off his stupid face to be amused about taking him by surprise, holding onto the barrel of the gun with a vice-like grip. Pulling his free arm back to strike again, he failed to notice that Kursha had slid a hand out of sight. The knife flashed, and he was too late; a screech of pain erupted from his throat as the metal jabbed into his upper arm, grip finally loosening off the gun as they grappled.

Zeffer wasn't keen on taking another shot point blank. He crowded against the greenblood with a snarl, switching the baton between his hands so he could tear the knife out and fling it aside. Blood gushed from the wound, soaking the fabric of his jacket sleeve and splattering everywhere as he continued to swing angrily. Despite the adrenaline that was pumping into his system, there was no denying that his body was tired, and even his eyes were starting to bother him. Was that why his swings kept falling short? With a growl, he reached to yank up the object around his neck, revealing it to be a single goggle that fit snugly over his left eye.

The frame of the lens lit up after a moment, and a deranged smirk finally painted itself across his face as the world became clearer. Why the ******** did he always forget to wear the damn thing? He jabbed forward with his batons, and was about to lift his boot to deliver a brutal kick to Kursha's chest, until something else stabbed painfully into his wrist. Jerking his eyes off of the greenblood, the sight of the lusus looming above his opponent startled him for a split second, before he thought to swat the snake heads away in annoyance. He took a hard swing at the beast's body, momentarily distracted and hoping it would get the idea and back the ******** off if he gave it a good shock.

Out of the corner of his eye, Kursha witnessed a flash of white as something shot over his shoulder and towards Zeffer. Suddenly two fresh holes appeared in the blueblood's arm. There was no sign of what had struck him. Hearing the chorus of hissing at his back though, Kursha understood. His grin widened. The seadweller had finally proven her salt after all.

Several more of the snake heads poised to strike. Two lashed out in unison and Zeffer made his counterattack. Kursha was not about to waste the opportunity. Ducking under the swing, he slipped around the blueblood's left side. His back was temporarily exposed.

Kursha gave the rifle a twirl. With the identity of his opponent revealed and the surprise aid of MeduMa, his self-confidence had returned, not to mention his showmanship. He had already as good as won this fight. “Oi Zeff!” he called, in a sing-song voice. He planted the muzzle of the rifle against the small of the blueblood's back. “I'm over here, see~?” He squeezed the trigger.

Zeffer would not die from a contact shot. Probably.

A few second's distraction was all it took, as Zeffer retaliated against MeduMa's painful attacks. He landed several swats on the jelly lusus's massive bell before realizing his opponent had darted around him, and by then it was too late. As Kursha taunted, the blueblood only had a moment to look over his shoulder, panicked rage flooding his mind as the gun was jammed against his back. Even as he tensed to swing around, there was no avoiding the resulting blast.

Zeffer's screams echoed through the swamp, momentarily drowned out by the sound of the shot itself. He staggered forward, frozen for a moment as the pain washed over him in waves. Though the bullet he'd taken to his front had been painful enough, a contact shot was something he'd never experienced before. The area of impact was a bloody mess, jacket and flesh burned by the blast from the muzzle. Even though he could practically feel the bullet in the meat of his back, Zeffer knew he couldn't waste any time.

He swung around in one fluid motion, face streaked with tears of pain. With his bloodpusher pounding in his ears, he grabbed onto the muzzle of the gun again, only taking a split second to hone in on his target as the lights on the goggle flashed momentarily. Snarling, he jerked Kursha close before ramming a baton into his stomach, simultaneously beginning to shove him backwards. The baton crackled loudly as it made contact, and Zeffer forced it against the other's body for as long as he could manage, doing his best to steer them away from the angry lusus, and Maneki's prone form.

As Zeffer staggered, Kursha lowered the muzzle of the rifle a fraction. Watching the blueblood reel, his expression turned thoughtful. Was that all it took? Had he laid Zeffer low with that shot? His finger hesitated against the trigger. It was almost disappointing. After all the trouble the blueblood had given him before... almost, but not quite. He grinned. He had finally paid Zeffer back for their brawl back in New Hemisect. Not only that, he was better, stronger. Kursha was about to say as much, when Zeffer struck.

The world danced with light. His vision rapidly alternated between black and white. A fast paced drumming pounded his spongeclots. Then burning pain ripped through his stomach and seized his whole body. Electricity pulled his muscles so tight it felt like they would snap. Lances of pain went up and down his arms, legs, and into his brain. The drumming beat faster. His mind was scrambled, the discordant buzz of static broken only by sudden cracks and flashes of light.

Paralysed, Kursha presented no resistance as Zeffer drove him back. He was stiff, but without response. A high whining sound accompanied the crackle of stun baton. It lay somewhere between the buzz of a mosquito and screech of machinery. The sound came from Kursha. Not a scream or a cry, but something unnatural as the electricity played his vocal chords. Then he tipped, fell away from the stun baton, and the noise stopped.

Gasping, Kursha stumbled. He found his balance just before he slipped down into the mud and his stance went wide. The rifle dangled from his fingertips. His left fist clenched against his chest as he struggled to breathe. Each breath came in short, erratic sobs. He was all out of synch. His pump biscuit continued to skip and beat frantically, drumming new rhythms. Every part of him felt disjointed. Son of a b***h.

That had been utterly terrifying.

Kursha had only been shocked for a few seconds, then dazed for several more, but it felt like an eternity. Never mind the residual pain that still coursed through his system. Pain he was familiar with. Pain he could live through. The shock though... the shock had left him helpless. It had stolen his breath, his action, and even his presence of mind. All he could do was watch his twitching limbs as his brain fried and his heart went into overdrive. Even now, it beat fast. Whether that was from the electric jolt or due to sudden panic, it was impossible to say. He just knew one thing: he could not let that happen again.

Kursha tried to settle his gaze on Zeffer. Everything was too bright, too vibrant. The world seemed to move in distorted flashes. He blinked and his pupils switched to crosshairs. Nothing changed. The problem was his head, not his eyes. A guttural sound escaped the back of his throat. His vocal chords still would not engage. No good. He had no time and Zeffer still had a hold on the gun. He made a snap decision.

Drawing his foot back, Kursha aimed the steel toe of his boot towards the blueblood's kneecap in a burst of speed. He was rewarded with a sharp crack.

The shocked look that came over the greenblood's face as Zeffer spun around to attack was almost worth the pain that was radiating out from the wound on his back. It burned horribly, and despite his quivering muscles, he forced himself to remain upright. He was running purely on adrenaline as the end of his baton found Kursha's stomach. Using his weapons in such a manner was quite rare for the blueblood; dealing enlongated, debilitating blows wasn't very sporting, but Zeffer had forgotten about sport long ago. He was out for blood, and the low whine that escaped his opponent as he jabbed forward let him know that he was close to getting what he wanted.

Zeffer knew what Kursha was experiencing. At its highest setting, the electricity from the baton would be more than enough to ******** with his heartrate and breathing. He watched with cold eyes as the younger troll seized up, quickly taking the chance to shove him around without any fight. The hissing of the seadweller's lusus had not died down, but he didn't care about it anymore, couldn't bring himself to tear his gaze from the greenblood again. As Kursha stumbled down and began to cough, Zeffer didn't waste a second before eagerly wrenching the gun from his hands. He was ******** tired of being shot, and he wasn't going to let the little ******** put any more bullets into him.

He snarled as he smacked the butt of the rifle against Kursha's head, before flinging it aside. The size and heft of the gun made for an awkward toss, but he managed to send it hurtling several yards away, where it lodged in the swamp muck with a muted splash. The blueblood barked a deranged laugh, brought on by the pleasure of disarming the greenblood, but unfortunately, his distraction would cost him once again. The laugh turned into a shriek of pain as the greenblood's boot connected with his knee, and he went down like a sack of bricks, already weakened by the bullet in his back.

Zeffer wouldn't give up so easily. Emboldened by Kursha's lack of weapon, he lunged forward and grabbed him by the front of his jacket, teeth bared as he tried to pin the greenblood down.

As Zeffer crumpled from the blow, Kursha shifted his attention to shift to the gun. Where had it landed? If he could just locate it before Zeffer recovered... The brief diversion proved a mistake. In the instant he looked away, the blueblood grabbed the front of his jacket and hauled him down. Kursha felt his feet slip out from beneath him and with a splash he tumbled down into the muck. For a few moments, his world was chaos. As he broke the surface for air, he grappled with the blueblood beside him. His fingers struggled to find purchase. His legs kicked out. Something lashed across his cheek. A spray of water mingled with blood. Then suddenly the blueblood was underneath him, face-down in the swamp water.

Kursha wasted no time. He drove his knee into the blueblood's back, where his coat was stained dark blue, and forced his head underwater. Dodging the flailing limbs, he kicked at the hand holding the baton and stomped it into the mud with his free foot. Then, teeth grit, Kursha shifted all his weight to the back of Zeffer's head in order to keep him pinned. Even as the bubbles subsided he did not let up. In that particular moment, he had abandoned any notion of bringing the rebels in alive.

Counting the seconds, Kursha wondered how long it would take before Zeffer ran out of air. How could he tell when the blueblood had expired? Already it seemed like minutes had passed, but he did not dare release his grip. Too soon, he risked everything. Given the chance, Zeffer would destroy him, that much Kursha knew. It was a possibility he could not afford, no matter how small. So only when Kursha was absolutely certain, without a shadow of a doubt that the blueblood was dead, would he relent.
