A sand whale has been spotted nearing the village sand harbour!. These creatures are extremely unfriendly and have been known to swallow entire buildings. Ring the gong, fire bombs, throw ballistas, do what you can to stop the sand whale!
- The sand whale has 200/200 HP. When it hits 150 HP it will leave and swim away.
- At the start of the battle roll 1d6. This is the amount of ballista shots your character gets. Every time you use a ballista shot, you do a perfect 10 HP damage.
- The sand whale does an automatic -1 damage to you every time you attack the sand whale.
gaia_star If you thwart the sand whale it drops a whale fin, it is considered a quest item. Add it to your quest item list

Vaudrey had learned a Very Important Lesson since coming to the village:
He was useless.
No one was going to know this, however, if he could help it. Vaudrey's determination to act as calm, collected, charming, and confident as possible was clung onto, in spite of the overwhelming odds against him, and he was going to be simply charismatic with these two ghouls he'd run into.
(Except it was less charismatic and more just melodramatic.)
"Ah!" he said, pointing out off of the dock with a talon that was shaking slightly. "Look, I see it! I see the foul creature just ahead, should we try and get rid of the thing? It is terrorizing the poor village, it should be dealt with properly by heroes such as ourselves!"
(He was not going to mention how he was quaking in his boots at the very thought of getting near that thing.)
It goes without saying that Lucille was feeling pretty down at the moment. Not only were her efforts totally ignored by those ungrateful villagers but now it would seem that she has gotten herself into a Mystery and that she was probably going to have to solve it if leaving this village is part of her future plan (it is).
But solving it was a bigger challenge than she had thought. After running after several villagers to interview them, all she got was that…their fishes were invisible, something was wrong (duh!) and they were an ungrateful bunch of uncharismatic and depressing people.
And that they were in constant worry of being in danger.
Considering how aggressive their common turkey was and how erratic their lobsters were, Lucille did not blame them.
Bong, bong, bong bong~ came the thunderous sound of a distant gong.
“What now?” exclaimed Lucille.
“Sand whale,” said a nearby villager and with a tone of inevitable defeat added… “It is dangerous,”
“No kidding,” replied Lucille drily before heading off towards the direction of the alarm.
Where she was greeted by a most amazing sight.
“A fellow student!!” screeched Lucille with barely contained relief (she noticed the skull badge).
A second screech followed when she noticed the whale.
“That’s horrible!”
Then a revelation.
“Were you asked to get rid of it? Alone?!”
Anger at the villager’s lack of concern and responsibility took over.
“Let me help!”

Honestly it was just one thing after another in this village, wasn't it. At this point she might even have preferred a visit to her terrible aunt over this; as it was, Leo sighed and nodded moodily to the boil's question. "Yes I suppose we should; Jack knows these villagers aren't likely to get it done by themselves, considering how much they're already outsourcing. Probably just be some other poor sods roped into doing it for them." She snorted at the thought and rolled up her sleeves, trying to think of how to best tackle this new enemy.
Only then a very loud Reaper ghoul arrived and completely managed to overlook her. "I'm not that short!" Okay, she might be slightly short. "But I agree, we definitely gotta team up for this. And," she considered the sand whale with a frown, "I really don't think punching or kicking is going to win this battle."

Vaudrey was not about to say that he'd been roped into helping only out of sheer intimidation from one of the less pleasant villagers.
"I volunteered," he said proudly, which wasn't true, but hey, who would know? He preened a little, feathers fluttering outwards impressively (or as impressively as he could possibly make them, which wasn't much) and standing tall (which was actually better, since he was at least taller than some of the villagers). "We should do our best with this loathsome creature!
He took the first shot, feeling quite impressive when he managed to hit it - but alas, after that...
"I fear I must rely on the strength of mind of you two lovely ghouls!" Vaudrey declared grandly, in an effort to make up for his utter lack of ability.

"I'm not that short!"
“Oh, I’m sorry, I did not se- ... I did not notic- ....I am glad to meet you!” faltered Lucille, temporarily thrown off her tempo and yet showing a great determination to be sensitive of her choice of words around someone who was very evidently insecure about her height.
Having thus established her allies (for this fight at least), Lucille watched as the owl-student officiated the first blow; which seemed to make the sand whale even more enraged that it already was.
“I think that shot must have hurt it!” exclaimed Lucille, voicing her thoughts. “Perhaps it we hurt it enough...it will go away!”
Grabbing the ballista (and nudging the Monster student out of the way), Lucille took aim and fired before cringing. “Got it on the fin!”
Then...
“Your turn! Perhaps you would have a better shot at it” said Lucille to Leo.

That was some terrible floundering. Leo crossed her arms and scowled slightly for a moment before shaking herself out of it. They had a job to do, getting in a huff wasn't going to help anyone - "apology accepted." But don't do it a second time laid in the air. "It's nice to meet you too, both of you. Probably would have been better under more fun circumstances, though."
When the boil went to the ballista, she cheered, impressed by his thinking. "I didn't even notice that was there!"
After both of their shots she threw an encouraging grin and a thumbs up to the other students, "nice work! We got this in the bag." Well, hopefully.
Nodding to the other ghoul, she took up position at the ballista, thinking for a half-second before taking aim. "The belly is the most vulnerable, right?" The shot fired, and hit, and the sand whale made a mournful noise.

Vaudrey was more than a little embarrassed that he apparently had to be rescued by two ghouls, but at least he wasn't so much as showing it, clapping his claws together excitedly - and besides, they made up for the fact that he was pretty damn pathetic.
(He was never going to admit that.)
"I - yes, the belly is!" said Vaudrey encouragingly, his eyes sparkling - either with tears or happiness, it wasn't quite certain, because the sand whale had smacked his leg. "You are both doing marvelous jobs, I must say I am quite impressed with the both of you!"

“You are a genius!” exclaimed Lucille at Leo. “The belly is so huge…we can’t possibly miss it!”
And no truer words were spoken as Leo’s dextrous aim smacked the beast right in the gut. The whale let out a pitiful moan but still seemed intent on heading towards the village. A passing fin smacked the male student right in the leg.
“Are you hurt? I hope you are not too hurt…” said Lucille with some concern in her voice while unsaid words implied that if he were indeed beyond the point of help, Lucille was not above the old adage of “everyman for himself”. Regardless of the fact that the student was kinda cute…
Turning quickly away lest her blush be noticed, Lucille then took over the ballista. It seemed that they would do a turn-based attack and now it was her turn to have a shot.
“Take that!” shrieked Lucille in a fit of excitement and adrenaline fueled glee.
Perhaps this was how old whale hunters felt when they went after their targets in tiny boats. Of course, quite a few of those boats would be damaged and the sailors lost.
But still…the danger, the rush of adrenaline, the sheer powerful awesomeness of firing such a dangerous weapon. It was just amazing!
Lucille felt powerful, strong and…

Leo didn't quite know what to do with all of the praise levelled at her, and so answered with a bashful grin. Could a grin be bashful? This one was doing its best. "Aw thanks! You guys are doing great too," she clapped them both on the shoulder, perhaps a bit more heartily than was meant to. "No sand whale's a match for us!"
And then, to the boil, "we can go get that looked at afterwards, if you need." She nodded towards his leg - surely there'd be someone in the village who knew how to bandage it up, if he needed it. And truthfully she was feeling the toll herself, after her earlier wrangle with the turkeys and now this.
She focused back on the other ghoul as she took her shot, cheering her on. "Great shot!" Leo was grinning, elated that they were doing so well and then -
the sand whale charged straight at them. Thinking quickly, she threw herself over to the ballista, forgot all about aiming and just fired.
Thankfully luck was on her side, because her haphazard shot was a homerun - hitting the sand whale right in the eye. The giant creature roared, even louder than before, thrashed about for a few precarious moments and then turned tail and ran.
"Holy-" she remembered the younger ghoul's presence and bit back her curse. "Ah, that is to say - er, wow?" She scratched her arm, heartbeat pumping in her ears and adrenaline in her veins. "That was lucky. Really lucky - for a moment there I was imagining us as pancakes."

Vaudrey peeked out from behind the rock he was most definitely not hiding behind.
"Oh, well done, well done!" he cried, clapping his talons together as one of the ghouls patted his shoulder. "And yes, yes, I am quite well, thank you for asking my dear!" He swelled a little, feathers fluttering, and tried to look as though he had been merely observing this entire time, sweeping his talons over his cape to smooth it down and beaming brightly at them all.
And by "all" it was really just the two of them, but between the two of them, they'd managed to take down the damn whale. The villagers were looking at him suspiciously, and Vaudrey gave a laugh that was a little too high to be entirely real.
"Yes, yes, well," he said hastily. "I say we get out of here, shall we?"

“That was a good save,” agreed Lucille. “I was afraid that that would be the end of us,”
“And I agree about heading back,” said Lucille with a definitive nod. Being out here in the open felt vulnerable. And who was to say that the horrible sand whale would not come back?
“I guess…I’d be seeing you around then. Bye!” chirped the Reaper with a wave of her hand. “Let’s meet up again when we are back in school!”

If the boil was being melodramatic, the Mare didn't notice it at all. "Yeah, great job everyone! That was some nice teamwork." She gave them a wide grin and a double thumbs up, genuinely impressed by how well they'd managed this. And well, if she was still a little bit shaken up by how close she'd come to being a Leo-pancake, she was doing her damnedest to hide it.
"Alright, that sounds good. I'll see you two around, hopefully!" Returning the younger ghoul's wave with one of her own, she threw a last grin and a "take care!" to them before striding off to find something hopefully less hazardous to do.
