As a concept, Stein was born from Gaia artist reapersun's brilliant mind, and as a Gaian, he first arrived to the page in August 27th, 2009, his first forum post dating back to February 1st, 2011.
However, as a living being, Stein came to be long ago, conceived as the physical manifestation of a well-intentioned yet gruesome attempt by an unnamed doctor to fool death itself and imbue new life onto the previously deceased.
The REI Monstrosity, which arrived to La Victoire in October 8th, 2013, and finished evolving in November 1st, 2013, follows the story of his awakening through the Doctor's own journal. Below, a transcript of its Report:
Monstrosity
Police find the apartment abandoned, coated with the dust of several months, its tenant vanished. Among the clutter and strewn papers they discover the journal, many pages missing or shredded, the only clue to the whereabouts of its author. On the inside cover, faint and smudged, it reads, "This journal shall serve as documentation for my theories, experiments, and discoveries, which will push the boundaries of modern science, and shake the foundations of human understanding."
Written beneath was a name, but it has been scratched out.
The journal continues…
Many of the journal's early pages are gone or illegible, ink washed out with strong chemicals, pages pasted together with dried blood. At last, far along in the book, a set of pages has been preserved, some lines and words laboriously blacked out. It begins…
"Today I have made a grand breakthrough. My research into ██████████ has revealed a key process which has not yet been tested. I have kept it carefully hidden from my colleagues at ██████ ███████, and have decided to set up research in my own attic. Some of the methods I will have to employ are of questionable moral implication, but necessary, if I am to be successful.
"Perhaps if I had pursued medicine over medical research, if I were less of a scientist, I would not have the stomach to do what is required. But as a man of science, given the opportunity to know the unknowable... I am resolved."
A large section of the journal is blacked out. Scribbles and bits of text to the sides reveal it may have been a set of equations and schematics. The next entry is dated several weeks after.
"At last, I have my equipment running, ██████████ ████ ████████ and the subject of my experiment is ready. ████████████████ ████████ ████ ██ █████ ████████. ██ ████ █████ and collecting the components proved to be the most difficult; the ████████ assembly itself was straightforward, even enjoyable in a strange way. I suppose it is improper to admit so in my documentation, but I trust that those of you who have read this far are like-minded scientists, and you can understand the pleasure of seeing through a grand idea.
And such a grand idea! Such a miracle I will perform, in only a few short days, a miracle on par with the work of God himself! Mankind will rejoice when this discovery is known, when this, the greatest enemy of man, is defeated, and soon all worship will be turned to science and knowledge and truth! Oh imagine, the day in history when death itself was no more...
Ah, but I get ahead of myself... First, yes first, the experiment must succeed. It, HE, must awaken."
The writing has become an erratic scrawl, describing at first the construction of additional machines, waxing poetic about the miracle of the human body, much of it redacted. Suddenly, the text becomes vicious and dark, the paper indented from the strength of the man holding the quill, the ink too heavily applied, smeared and run.
"I have failed," it writes.
"Everything went as expected. ██ ███ ██ ████ and all equipment functioned as it should. According to ████████, there should be a new life lying on the table before me. My creation, my child... Lifeless, still.
Perhaps, there is truly something unknowable about the creation of life, something that is truly only for Man's creators, for whatever beings might exist on a grander plane than ours. Perhaps man can bring all the components together, but still, we cannot bestow the most vital piece. Is there truth to the concept of the soul?
If there is truth to it, then... my God... into what territory have I trespassed?"
"What... what have I done?"
The next several pages are blank.
At last, on the final page, there are the last few lines of text, written in the same hand, albeit far more calmly. The policeman reading discerns that it must have been written after the redactions and destruction of the book, before it was abandoned on the floor.
"I must make one final confession. I have destroyed as much of my research as I could, to make this right, to make it so it will never be repeated, before I go. I was not able to bring myself to deconstruct my creation... I have left it on the table in the attic. Do with it what you will, it will no longer matter to me.
"I confess... In my former documentation, I lied about how I procured the... components. I had tested the procedure on animals before, and found that it was ineffective once the bodies were more than 12 hours old. I was eager... prideful... so sure... I could not wait for the bodies to appear in the morgue on their own. The odds of enough people compatible with the experiment all dying within a few hours of each other were astronomical. And so…
"I have listed the names of four men and one woman below.
"Let it be known... I meant well.
"Sincerely,
"The Doctor."
The police strip the apartment, and the attic above, and find traces of a paralytic toxin. Later, the doctor's shoes will be found on a nearby riverbank, and police will conclude that he took the poison and walked into the water, driven by the guilt and horror at what he had done. They will also find evidence that despite his attempts, some of his machinery had continued to run long after he left it, and finally surged and burned out.
However, this is all the police find. The abomination mentioned in the journal, the construct that never woke, had vanished, just as its father did.
Many years later, the journal will disappear from police evidence, and never be missed.

During his years around, Stein has taken up duties of vital importance.
Starting on February 2011, Stein took up the duty of receiving wearable-related glitch reports in a forum threadGaians could peruse in order to minimize (or outright erase) the amount of existing avatar glitches. As a parallel job, he's also responsible for keeping a tally on EI creators and their works, and reports any glitch related to their items back to the respective artists.
A year later, in February 2012, after having noticed the talent Gaians had when it came to fashion, he opened up his own clothes shop, CrosStitch, of which we'll talk about in the following section.
According to himself, as well, he "was formerly employed as a lawyer, a doctor, and an accountant, and a few other odd pieces". He also believes his nose to have belonged to a florist.
"Items designed by talented Gaians."
Like its owner himself, the architecture of CrosStitch boasts a seemingly haphazard but actually quite balanced design. Located in Durem, and built upon a mixture of medieval gothic architecture with art nouveau details, Stein's shop manages to catch its owner's nature, an unexpectedly harmonious hybrid of qualities that would otherwise clash greatly: low-profile and elegant, but with a fair deal of eccentricity. Plus, if you can tear your eyes from its beautiful design for a moment, you can catch a glimpse of Stein himself, peeking out from the window on the last floor and creeping on the passersby below.
The shop, manned by Stein and a yet-unnamed female assistant, sells only user-designed wearables, which are selected via themed contests in which he himself reviews and picks the best designs, taking into account the creativity of the artists and the execution of the piece on itself.
"All of my items are designed by the REAL talent behind Gaia."
Stein's shop blurbs: "Welcome." "Please don't be alarmed by my appearance." "All of my items are designed by the REAL talent behind Gaia." "I often solicit new ideas. Keep an eye out for my item contests." "Be sure to follow the rules when entering item contest. ALL of the rules." "My assistant? Oh, don't worry about her."
Though not as frequently as other NPCs, Stein has been featured in the site's many events and comics in the past.
During the Pie Hard event in Summer 2011, Stein was one of the NPCs that set out on a quest to eat tons of pies to achieve glory and a long-lasting indigestion. As well as on the event itself, he was featured in the second page of the manga accompanying it, displaying a rather snappish personality, a stark contrast to the sweet and humble Stein we had the pleasure to meet after he opened his shop.
After three exhausting, grief- and cherry-filled weeks, Stein managed to become one of the six finalists that would fight knife and fork against eachother to see who's the ultimate pie-gorger in the next part of the event: Pie Hard with a Vengeance.
(Click for a bigger image.)
During the days that Pie Hard with a Vengeance lasted, Stein managed to devour the astounding quantity of 937 pies.
Unfortunately, that wasn't enough, and while he still made it to the podium, he was put in the third place of it, behind Louie by three pies and Ian and Rufus by six.
Don't worry, Stein, we still love you. Maybe even more now that you smell like delicious pastries.
During the Valentine's Day event in 2012, Stein was one of the NPCs you could send Valentines to. Unfortunately, the result wasn't quite the one Gaians were expecting...
(Stein has returned your valentine unopened.)
So as to celebrate the grand opening of CrosStitch, Stein was featured in a mini-comic in which he considered selling his own body parts until the results for the first design contest had been selected. I'm sure there would've been more than a handful of Gaians willing to spend astronomical amounts of Gold in order to possess a piece of him.
As well as a brand new store, here we see him displaying for the first time the kind and friendly personality that would become his signature until this day.
Water on the brain? My oh my, Biopsy time. You don’t need a medical degree to master this gutsy game, but it will require a steady hand and a strong stomach! With help from Stein, disassemble your patient with care if you want to put him back together again... Or not?!?!
During the Runic ChallengeCI event of 2012, Stein was featured in Biopsy, the parody of the famous Hasbro tabletop game Operation. Biopsy was the fourth of five stages players could go through to win the items featured in the CI.

During the February 2014 CIIn Deep Ship, Stein was featured alongside with Brennivin in the (crack) pairing known as Stennivin in Dropplr, a parody of the famous blogging platform Tumblr. The comic posted by the fictional user stitches_comic was drawn by Gaia artist reapersun.

As well as the above comic, Gaians were delighted to see that Stein was one of the NPCs that made their Valentines rounds through the event forum interacting with users in a personalized manner. During said rounds, he answered questions about himself, responded to various solicitations of the romantic kind and shot down some of the more lewd kind, advised Gaians not to engage in the dark arts, and confirmed for some curious users that he is, in fact, not a robot. He has also admitted to be very soft-spoken. How cute.
In February 2015, Cindy Donovinh created a topic reporting sightings of Carl chewing on what witnesses called a "highly stitched" pair of underpants. Later that month, Stein arrived to the Chatterbox to solicit help in finding "something somewhat precious of [his]". You can do the maths.
Following his interest towards fashion and the organization of contests, as well as his nature as a "revived" being, Stein organized a Zombie Base Avatar Contest on May 2015, where Gaians could dress up other postmortem creatures with the most fashionable outfits they could come up with.
During NPCon 2015, we all had the pleasure to interact with our beloved shopkeeper in this very same panel, which he, albeit briefly, graciouslyvisited! He even complimented my decor, though. Swooning so hard.
During October 2015, we encountered ourselves face-to-face with Stein in a train ride with destination Netherhood, a neighbourhood where he, according to his own words, had "met many a loyal companion with similar tastes in aesthetic and fine dining". Despite not residing in the Netherhood, he has expressed he feels quite at home in there.
In the Netherhood, we had the pleasure to make acquaintance with many colorful folks, such as Zombae, the adorable, albeit a bit clumsy undead girl; Finian, the timid bibliophile ghost; Wollstone, the metalhead patchwork kid with an electrifying personality; Exie and Seeley, a pair of demonic twins with a wicked love for puns; and the adorable Owlatte, a haughty little kin that smells like pumpkin spice.

(From left to right, top to bottom: Zombae, Finian, Wollstone, Exie and Seelie, and Owlatte. Click on each character for a larger image.)
As well as taking more active roles, Stein has also garbed himself in seasonal clothes throughout the years:
1. Halloween 2012 - Vincent Van Gogh 2. Christmas 2012-2014 3. Halloween 2013 - Khan (Star Trek: Into Darkness) 4. April Fool's 2014 - Diedrich with Stein's nose Totally normal and non-green, non-leporine Stein 5. Halloween 2014 - Makishima Yuusuke (Yowamushi Pedal Go!!) 6. Halloween 2015 - Skulverine
As it couldn't be any other way, Stein has been featured in many items, either directly or indirectly.
The items that narrate the creation of our beloved shopkeeper. As quoted above, Monstrosity is the REI that details the process through which Stein came to be. This REI is compossed of 18 items to emulate the appearance of both the unnamed Doctor and his Creation, as well as two backgrounds, the macabre elements with which Stein was "built", the paralytic toxin that would eventually put an end to the Doctor's life, and the Doctor's journal itself.
SDPlus #197 Stein The glitch master of Evolving Items and bane of the art department.
As it was to be expected with any other NPC that is so astoundingly popular, Stein also has a doll version of himself for Gaians to wear and cuddle an embarrassingly high number of times a day. This item comes with two doll poses, as well as a big, bold and red
[REJECT] stamp mark to wear smack dab across your avatar's face, so as to proudly display that Stein has, indeed, interacted with you, and you weren't up to his expectations. How shameful.
But of course, Gaians needed wanted more. One can never have enough silly virtual paraphernalia of the stuff you love.Made to resemble the outfit Stein wore during the Biopsy stage of the 2012 CIRunic Challenge, this one SDPlus comes with two doll poses, as well as Stein's signature mismatched nose for you to wear. Let it be known that in this panel we do not condone the unsanitary practice of wearing grody corpse pieces that don't belong to you in the first place.

Team Stein Shirt Official licensed Pie Hard merchandise. Machine washable for easy removal of pie filling stains.
Logically, during the Pie Hard event in Summer 2011, sets of new character-related merchandise were released with the purpose of showing your undying and creepy pie-feeding loyalty to your favourite participating shopkeepers. Thanks to this, you're now able to get your hopefully clean and non-pie-sticky hands on some sweet green and white wearables.
During the 2012 Valentine's event, while unlisted, Stein was one of the NPCs you could send all of your sappy, sickeningly sweetValentines to. Unfortunately, these would be sent back to you unopened and with a familiar red stamp across its surface with no shirtless pics of Stein in sight. Don't worry, it's not that he hates you. He's just a very busy man. Right?
During May 2015, on its 22nd day, the Throwback Spring Party gave away one of its fancy tomes, this time containing Stein's trademark measuring tape, allowing Gaians to choose between its Human and Animal versions. This event also marked the day in which Paws finally had the chance to show their appreciation towards Stein by wearing a character-themed accessory.

His Fashion Sense (Design contest):
The point of this contest is simple: to design a new outfit for Stein that is heavily inspired by his usual fashion choices and related imagery (that is, stitches/patches, skulls, a mostly red and black palette, and the likes). The outfit can be for any occassion (formalwear, casual, sports, fantasy, etc.), and it can belong to any fashion style and/or time period. Entries can be either traditional or digital.
Submission format:
Quote:
Username: (Your username) Type of outfit: (Occassion for which the outfit was designed - eg. costume, formal...) Inspiration: (The style or period that you drew inspiration from - eg. Rockabilly, Victorian...) Image: (Your entry) Style: (Digital or traditional)
Rules:
• You can enter as many time as you want. To do so, simply create a new post for each entry, following the above provided submission format. Note that, while you can enter an undefined number of times, you can only win once. We'd rather you focus on a really good submission rather than many subpar ones. • For the sake of keeping this contest Stein-related, your submission should feature him wearing the outfit you designed. Detail shots and descriptions of the outfit are allowed, but ultimately, the most important part of the entry is his image. • All entries must be yours. They must not have stolen or copyrighted material. This is a general rule of all contests as well as common courtesy towards artists. You don't want to get in trouble. • Any kind of outfit is allowed. This includes normal everyday clothes, costumes, uniforms/working clothes, and other media-inspired getups. • If you're going for a media-inspired costume (ex. Stein in a Kamen Rider-like suit), please try to steer clear from copies, recolours, rip-offs, or any kind of copyrighted material. Drawing inspiration is fine, but the design should be mostly yours. • If you're going for a country- or time period-inspired outfit, please do all proper research and steer clear from any kind of depiction that could be defamatory, demonizing, inaccurate or offensive to any of the real persons involved in the origins of the topic you drew inspiration from. • Please refrain from submitting entries that may contain sensitive material. This includes nudity or sexual content (either complete or partial), violence, overly-disturbing imagery, or content whose purpose is to mock or ostracize any person or group of people, be them or not related to Gaia. • Crossdressing is allowed. Not encouraged, but allowed. However, gender-bending/Rule 63 is not allowed.
Prizes: TBA
His POV (Storytelling contest):
The point of this contest is to fill in the gap left behind by Monstrosity: what happened to Stein after he awakened, but before he arrived to Gaia? It's heavily implied that he was shunned from every other place due to the nature of his body and creation, and that Gaia proved to be a safe haven from all the previously endured hostility. Entries can be written in any format (prose, poetry, haiku, etc.), and be of any length.
Submission format:
Quote:
Username: (Your username) Title: (The name of your submission) Body: (Your entry) Style: (Prose, poetry, etc.)
Rules:
• You can enter as many time as you want. To do so, simply create a new post for each entry, following the above provided submission format. Note that, while you can enter an undefined number of times, you can only win once. We'd rather you focus on a really good submission rather than many subpar ones. • Your submission must tell a story from Stein's point of view. It's not necessary for it to be narrated in the first person, but all (or at least most) of it should follow his own experiences and thoughts. • All entries must be yours. They must not have stolen or copyrighted material. This is a general rule of all contests as well as common courtesy towards artists. You don't want to get in trouble. • Any kind of format and genre is allowed, as long as it's understandable and written in a language that we can comprehend. • In case you're submitting poetry with a certain metric and/or rhyme, state what kind of metric/rhyme you're using in the Style section of the submission, and stick to it as much as you can. • Please refrain from submitting entries that may contain sensitive material. This includes sexual content, overly-disturbing imagery, or content whose purpose is to mock or ostracize any person or group of people, be them or not related to Gaia. • Shipping is allowed. Not encouraged, but allowed. Breaking his character or going against canon in order to add shipping is not.

F.A.Q.:
Any question or concern you may have regarding the contests, you're encouraged to voice it (after all, your question might also be someone else's). These will be included in this F.A.Q. so as to help visitors and potential participants.

General: • What do you think of Stein? Is he your favourite shopkeeper? Why/why not? • Had his hand been, in fact, up for sale when he first opened CrosStitch, would you have bought it? Would you get in a bidding war with someone else (or a group of people) for the right to possess your own piece of Stein? • What do you think of his shop? Have you bought/are you wearing anything from it? Which has been your favourite contest theme so far? • Is there any piece of art or fiction regarding him you'd like to share with us? (Please, remember to keep it PG-13 and, in case said work isn't of your authory, ask for permission to its original creator and give credit where it's due.)
Relationships: • Do you ship him with someone? (Platonically, romantically, hateship, crack, etc.) • What are your thoughts on Stennivin? How do you think their first meeting went? • How do you think his relationship with his assistant is? • Had the doctor been around for when Stein finally awakened, how do you think their relationship would have been? • How do you think he gets along with the other shopkeepers/NPCs?
Speculation: • What do you think were Stein's whereabouts immediately after "waking up" and before arriving to Gaia? • Do you think he will make an appearance in the ongoing plot in the near future? If so, which do you think his duty will be? • Do you have any headcanons or fan-theories regarding Stein and the scant information we have about him?
