The 24hour supermarket was scarily quiet at 2am. It was like a horror movie scene, long aisles with fluorescent lights, the odd customer or two quickly gathering whatever had sent them out so late at night (condoms, watermelon for a pregnant mare, frozen microwaveable lasagna, etc.). You could easily imagine turning the corner to find a body or a zombie shambling down through the pet food section.

Cirrus has insisted they come at night. There wouldn’t be any families out doing their daily shopping, no kids running around, grabbing at the candy and otherwise being unattended by parents who presumed not much worse could happen then their cherubs knocking the cereal boxes off the shelves.

So here they were, side by side, Cirrus looking incredibly drained after the battle to get her to agree to come at this time (which he was sure she’d just let him win in the end) and not relishing having to go down her surprisingly large shopping list.

"Well," he said with a sigh, "what do we need first?"

User ImageHonestly she didn't give two craps about what time of the day they did their shopping, but she'd still raised a stink about it anyway. Just to be difficult. Her arguments served two purposes- She got to let out some of the aggression she felt on a deeply basic level and it had (for a few minutes at least) pulled the pegasus from his broken silence.

It's not that she cared or anything about his feelings, but if he was going to continue to just give in to her all the time then why had she even moved in? What was the point of living up to her end of their deal if she couldn't even have fun?

She sighed under the bright fluorescent lights and used a hair elastic with little sea-shells on it to tie her hair up out of her face. Then she pulled her list out of the small bag draped over her neck and shoulder.

"You can be less sullen about it," she snorted, "you can't subsist on potatoes and tea. You'll die and take the fun of it away from me."

Her eyes scanned the paper and then the signs denoting where everything was located. It took her a few moments to organize her list according to which aisle each thing was in and then she nodded to the spices & baking section. Sea salt, black pepper, and a handful of baking spices- That was where they should start.

"The basics, Little Ghost. We need the basics first."

"I’ve already died once and it didn’t seem to ruin your fun. Doing it again couldn’t be much worse," Cirrus mumbled in a quiet way that was definitely laden with sarcasm. "Since I’ve already tried drowning, malnutrition seems like a fun next step."

The combination of exhaustion, her continued presence at his side, the knowledge that he would never be happy and the crushing death of all hope was almost freeing. He was still tired and still miserable but he’d hit rock bottom and he didn’t have the energy to be afraid of her anymore.

"Yes, of course." He stared down one of the aisles, without a clue as to what ‘the basics’ even were (he had indeed so far managed to exist on a purely tea and potato based diet) and waited for her to lead him to the next position. Now that they were at the supermarket, it was just easier to let her lead.

"If that's how you feel then you can always join me in the bathtub tonight. We can have some real fun before I drown you a second time," she fired back with a smirk. "However, your malnutrition and lack of food in the cottage means possible malnutrition for me."

With that she rubbed alongside him as she moved to make her way to her first stop in the supermarket. Once at her destination La Llorona swiftly grabbed the items she needed and placed them in the cart. With efficiency she was moving again; not even checking to see if Cirrus was following her. He had no reason not to.

"How do you feel about seaweed?"

Scratch that last thought; he was definitely still capable of fear. "I’ll pass," he muttered quickly, shuddering at the thought of drowning in his own bathtub.

It was with that image in his mind and a look on his face one might expect to see on somebody taking the long walk to the electric chair, that he trailed along behind her. They were at such a distance that he was just far enough away that they wouldn’t accidentally touch and close enough that they somehow still looked like they were together.

"Seaweed," repeated after an unnecessarily long silence where he stared vacantly at the back of her head. "I don’t have any feelings about seaweed." Except yes he sort of did because he’d tried sushi for the first time with Paper Lantern and his family and now he felt like he was going to throw up.

"Good," was all she answered. She didn't believe him, but there was no reason to question it. Moving along between row and row of food she continued to grab basic pantry staples that the pegasus seemingly had none of. Among those things was everything needed to make sushi.

She stopped when her eye caught on a section containing chocolate. Sweets were a guilty pleasure for her. Something she didn't really want others to know about ... As the image of her lounging in a tub with candles, wine, chocolate, and cupcakes wasn't really conducive to her image as badass psycho killer and one to not be trifled with.

After an almost uncomfortable amount of time staring at them she shrugged and dropped more than a healthy amount of bars in with the other food.

She spent so long staring at the chocolate section that Cirrus actually tuned back into reality and was a breath away from telling her to just grab some already. He blinked owlishly at all the chocolate bars in as they poured into the cart and then quietly added two more, one peanut brittle and one mint.

"We can’t get our tea here," he said out of the blue. "I buy it from a specialty shop and mix my own."

He added two more bars of chocolate to the cart and her eyes snapped up onto his face. She didn't know why the action surprised her since it only made sense that he'd want chocolate with his--

Tea. Yes, that.

She smiled for a moment. A pleasant smile with no hint of malice or irony to it, but it was gone in less than a heartbeat. Glancing back down to the cart she pursed her lips then moved on.

"With some of the mixes you have in your kitchen," our kitchen she mentally corrected herself, "that doesn't surprise me. There haven't been a lot of places in my life to accommodate mixing my own blends until now."

Why did she explain that? That was stupid. He didn't need to know that.

"We'll need fruit to go with all of this chocolate," she said irritably.

It slowly occurred to him, as she told him they would now need fruit in a tone of voice that suggested she was also aware of the same thing, that for second there they’d been at the start of a normal interaction. Just a simple conversation lacking the usual underlying threat and fear, as if they could actually get along properly.

Then the moment passed and mumbled, hardly audible, "“I like strawberries." She’d probably get some sort of melon instead now, just to spite him.

She heard him but didn't respond. Instead she just moved through the various produce and added various vegetables, including potatoes which she did wordlessly, until they were at the fruits.

She did pick out a few melons. As well as apples, bananas, and a mango. As she moved past the berries she silently put two bundles of strawberries in the cart. As she did so she looked him dead in the eyes and dared him to say anything about it.

She wasn't getting them for him. She was getting them for herself because they'd go well with the chocolate.

Cirrus said nothing. He didn’t even meet her gaze. Instead it skittered sideways, landing on anything else, as if yes, squash was a extremely interesting vegetable.

He didn’t, not for open second, imagine she’d picked the strawberries for his sake. Even if she had, there would have been something else attached to it. If she forced him to feed them to her later, he wouldn’t be surprised.

What was the difference between a squash and a pumpkin and what was a kabocha? He was still staring at the vegetables, blinking owlishly.

He was so intent on the squash section that it was easy to pull along side him and whisper in his ear.

"Really now," the words slithered out. "Are pumpkins that much more interesting then your future wife?"

She laughed, but her heart wasn't in it. La Llorona was still irked by her personable slip up just a bit ago with the chocolate.

He flinched.

His heart skittered along in his chest and his throat closed up.

But when his breath came back, all he said was, "I think we have everything we need now. I want to go home." Because the thought that she could be something more than a terrifying monster was scarier than anything else.
