NAME: Adamaz Karoth (Adamaz is the Greek word for “adamant” and part of the scientific name for diamonds, and Carats are a unit of purity for gold and the size of cut diamond.)

BLOOD COLOUR: Orange (#B24700)

SEX: Male.

SYMBOL: A cut diamond.

APPEARANCE:

Adamaz is thin, and fairly gangly. He likes to keep his hair in a mohawk, which is kept fairly tall and poofy by his curly hair. Out of the shaved sides of his head protrudes a pair of trapezohedron-shaped horns, with half the lower base sunk into the head, jutting out like a crystalline formation. He has a long face and sharp features. He tends to wear used clothing pilfered from his family tours of the dump. He often wears ratty, too-large jackets or hoodies, and jeans. As a kid, he hasn’t hit his growth spurt yet, so he’s a little on the small side.

WEAPON: A metal trash can lid he picked up once at the dump. He mostly uses it to defend himself from attack, rather than strike out. Though he can bop something with the rim.

PERSONALITY:

Adamaz is a lax and mellow kid, especially for a troll. His quiet nature makes him come off as taciturn, when in truth he’s just the kind of guy who doesn’t speak when he doesn’t have to. He keeps what’s on his mind to himself, unless asked for it; Otherwise, Adamaz has a tendency to be too candid with what he thinks for a troll of his blood color. So he’s learned to keep quiet. He’s not antisocial by any means — he makes friends despite his reserved attitude, and being with the people he cares about means a lot to him. When he’s with the trolls he’s comfortable with, he likes nothing more than to sit back and blow out some freestyle on his trusty harmonica, and go on walks about the many back-roads and trails of the Busthind Mountains he calls home. That may be exactly what Adamaz does when it’s just him and his lusus, but anything is made better with enjoyable company.

Adamaz has grown up watching his cockroach-lusus, and he takes very closely to the example of little “Papa Roach.” Adamaz believes that survival is above anything. The capacity to endure hardship is the mark of true strength, whether it comes from a bully, a natural disaster, his own melancholy or the systematic oppression of the hemospectrum. Adamaz has watched his lusus be crushed under piles of trash, squished by over-protective lusii, and stepped-on by vicious troll children, and each time has seen him bounce back up (as cockroaches are wont to do) as lively as ever. Adamaz has stopped being worried about the little guy — he knows Papa Roach will recover. Endure, subsist, and persevere. It’s what Adamaz and his dad do best.

This philosophy carries over to the hemospectrum. Adamaz may be low caste, but to him surviving the hemospectrum is tantamount to surmounting it. If keeping his social aspirations low and his head lower is what lets him get by unmolested, he ought to do just that. Granted, he has a tendency to speak what’s on his mind. So although he is encouraged by Papa Roach to keep his lips tighter than usual around his social superiors, Adamaz cannot help but speak frankly and “out of his station.” Highbloods raised with cushiony privileges who flaunt status and influence they haven’t earned for themselves (and, therefore, do not deserve) don’t receive much respect from Adamaz. This may not encompass all highbloods, but even little Adamaz can see the type. This stand-offish aspect of Adamaz’s personality lets him empathize with rebels who want to overturn the system, but it just makes more sense to him try keep under the radar and try to skate by. But then, he’s just a boy; opinions like that tend to change as you get older.

Papa Roach likes to recycle, and as such he and Adamaz frequent a nearby local dumpsite, where they rummage through scrap, junk, and garbage to find trappings and paraphernalia to use. They often find perfectly serviceable and good-condition clothing, furniture, and other sundries, just thrown away. One troll’s junk is another troll’s treasure, especially when the former was culled recently.

Adamaz’ interests are jumpstarted by these unwanted treasures found at the dump. Among his salvaged treasures is a manual for an ancient practice meant to hone a troll’s balance, strength, and willpower called “Troll Yoga.” The guide says that the art can balance and center his body and mind by pushing the limits of his physical endurance and his willpower. This is exactly Adamaz’ cup of tea (which he also enjoys), and he takes sincere joy in making himself fit and focused through the practice. Adamaz has also aggregated a small collection of books on the occult: spectral encounters and documented mutation cases. In time to himself, he likes to imagine what it would be like to be among those with psychic powers. No matter how he thinks about it, he can’t imagine he’d be much different than he is now.

His prize possession is his harmonica, which he hums on whenever he gets the chance. He could play it for hours given that anyone listening in would let him. As a kid, he’s not that skilled at the practice. But given enough time, he could become pretty good at the little instrument.

STRENGTHS:

Fortitudinous: the capacity to endure hardship is essential to who Adamaz is and who he aspires to be. He might even go so far as to call it “the ultimate good,” if he got much use out of philosophy at his age. Adamaz aspires to be like his lusus; strong enough to withstand basically anything from punches to keeping a cool head under pressure. He’s got guts, and a good bit of courage, and he can push the limits of his body particularly well by virtue of his troll yoga practice.

Perseverant: Adamaz’s strong will and mental focus gives him a stubborn ability to keep at tasks or challenges despite whatever obstacles he may have to surpass to complete to them. He has a lot of drive when he puts his mind to it, not necessarily out of passion but out of principle and dedication to his goal, whatever it may be.

Resourceful: Not having too many possessions of his own, Adamaz is used to scavenging what he can from the dump to make ends meet and often to fulfill basic needs. As a result, Adamaz has become rather observant and a strong improviser. He’s good at knowing both his surroundings and how to use them to his advantage. He’ll know an escape route before he has any need of it; use a spray bottle to help cool off during hot, sleepless summer days; cut up a glove to make a little Papa Roach-sized sweater when it gets cold during the winter nights.

FLAWS:

Unsympathetic: Adamaz may have a strong will, but that willpower is oftentimes directed towards himself. It’s hard for him to set his mind towards anything other trolls would consider important, like filling one’s quadrants or striving for greatness. Instead, Adamaz occupies himself with his harmonica, walks, occult books, and his troll yoga. This makes it difficult for Adamaz to sympathize with other’s wants and needs.

Blunt: Adamaz’s straightforward speech is the quality most likely to get him into trouble. If there isn’t a clear and expressive gesture he can perform to show what he thinks, or a simple way of putting it into words, he doesn’t have a clue how to articulate his feelings. While his usual quietness can keep this in check, whenever he decides to speak up, there’s nothing stopping him from speaking in the frank, gruff, and borderline impetuous manner in which he is accustomed. He’s made more than a few highblood faces turn blue with rage, and has no intention of speaking more lightly around them in the future.

Unhygenic: Having a cockroach for a lusus can have its drawbacks. Papa Roach never taught Adamaz how to keep himself “groomed,” like other lusii; what does a roach know about cleanliness? Adamaz’s clothes, scavenged at the dump from the leavings of the culled, tend to be rank and unwashed, as he likes to wear them until they begin to wear out. He only bathes himself if his own filth gets hard for him to cope with, maybe once a week. His squalid hive is littered with the detritus that Papa-Roach loves so much. Health concerns notwithstanding, the image of a smelly, garbage-collecting lowblood who lives by the dump is hard to deal with. Adamaz doesn’t know any better, and situations requiring any degree of presentable appearances or ettiquet are beyond him.

MEET THE LUSUS:

Adamaz’s lusus is a normal-sized cockroach, lovingly dubbed Papa Roach. Papa Roach is pretty bland as a lusus naturae goes, though he does come with an uncanny ability to withstand vast amounts of damage and later emerge unscathed, as well as enough strength in his antennae to overturn a full garbage can while foraging for food (or drag an unwilling child to where they need to go). When Papa Roaches protective instincts kick in, he will hurl whole dumpsters when he needs to, and can use his high strength and speedy feet to single-roachedly smash into foes like a bullet. His little legs do tend to get tired, though, and his antennae are often found protruding from Adamaz’s curly Mohawk.

Papa Roach’s main way of protecting his ward, however, is by teaching him to be as tough as he is, how to keep a cool head, and how to survive when no one else has his back. He’s a very supportive lusus, encouraging Adamaz to “chin up, tut tut” when he feels down, and to keep at what he likes (like troll yoga and the occult). He is not beyond chuckling at his own “lusus jokes” whenever he can with a twitch of his mustache-like feelers. As a cockroach, Papa Roach is excited by garbage and detritus, and is the main reason Adamaz lives so close to the garbage dump. He’s not very good at finding food Adamaz can eat, so he lets Adamaz pick his own meals while Papa Roach picks up the scraps.

HIVE: Adamaz lives in the Busthind Mountains, right next to the local dump and scrapyard. He doesn’t mind the cold, and neither does he mind the cliffs and ledges, nor the small population. The environment fits him; it’s something to persevere, to survive, and to test one’s endurance. As he is coming to know the hemospectrum and its consequences, he’s coming to appreciate how fortunate it is to be further from New Hemisect, where things could be tougher and populations of highbloods are higher.
