As you run towards the outer ramparts of the castle, you hear a horrific scraping noise. It sounds like something gouging against the castle, repeatedly. At a cursory glance, it seems as if everything is still okay, and oddly enough, as you stare at the sky, you do not see anything out of place, in fact, other than the noises and obvious ground tremors, everything looked absolutely ordinary.
Either these were extremely small invaders, or they were invisible.
A Great Knight passes by you, you recognize him - Percival, bearing the blue crest of the Eagle on his shield. He nods towards you, encouraging. "Go, see what you can do to keep them out."
What exactly did he mean by them?
Before you can ask, he has taken to the top of the ramparts, rushing through the chaos of armoured bodies and weapons, and as you look around again at the source of the tremors you notice an anomaly.
There is a cut in the sky. It begins to split several directions like odd tree branches, further, and further until it touches the earth-
- And the sky shatters completely, revealing its true visage, the a thick miasma of black, churning and pulsating, as if the sky was breathing.
You stop, and a memory returns to you. This is part of what you had forgotten, and seeing it so clearly jolts you out of your sacrificed oblivion. The sky had always been eternally dark.
With that single epiphany, everything else turns to shadow, all light disappearing around you. You hear surprised shouts, curses, people fumbling to create fire-
- people dropping their half-built torches as a horrific wailing pierces the air, forcing any close to cover their ears as the ringing continues and continues and continues-
- And then you are on your knees, everything is shrill and ringing louder, and someone is shouting at you to get up, and you feel yourself running towards the door, trying to make sense of things - there is some light now, distant and bleak- you pass by terrified faces and run towards the gate and up to the ramparts to help.
Silence.
And then you look below.
Hundreds, thousands of misshapen soldiers stood below. Twisted, corrupted soldiers, horsemen and riders, and creatures they had subjugated, all waiting for a single moment. Waiting for their leader to arrive. It felt surreal, it felt impossible, and the closer you looked, the more it felt inevitable that one of their thousands of curved weapons, or crude spears would cut into you and you would feel intense pain and-
- "It isn't over yet!" Percival raised his weapon, his sacred eagle-crested shield. "Secure the ramparts, we need all artillery ready, we need extra reinforcement on the main gate. Move."
DEFENDING THE CASTLE RAMPARTS
PREPARING FOR THE SIEGE:
Once again consider this a PRE PRP, as the purpose here is to tell a cohesive story. This is pretty much a "smaller" update, to get ready for the larger update later tonight/tomorrow, the actual siege. Feel free to RP in this area as much as you like until the siege begins! Once again, remember to QUOTE people you are talking to. Your character can now do a few things as they scramble to get ready
gaia_crown[ GET A TORCH ] Without light, your character is pretty much doing everything blind. The problem is everyone else has the same idea. You must look around for leftover pieces to assemble yourself. Grab something flammable, a shirt, some firewood, make it up as you wish, then roll 1d10. You can only roll once. If you roll a 1, whatever you grabbed successfully catches on fire. However, if you FAIL, you must now find someone who has a working torch, quote them, and share flames with them. This part must be rped. - If you have a working torch, please put it in ooc in red so people know to quote you.
gaia_crown[ LOADING THE BALLISTAS ] There's a few ballistas that need assembling on the ramparts. This requires scrounging around finding ballista ammo to load. The shots are HUGE, extremely long spear-like pieces. You need to load the ballista with a shot in order for it to be ready to use. Successfully loaded ballistas will do massive damage to the bosses in the siege, making it easier for you to fight mobs in the second part.
- There are FIVE ballistas. Write which one you are loading at the top of your post in bold blue. Roll 1d6. That is how far you manage to carry the giant ballista shot. RP out your character carrying it and handing it over to the next person ready to move it, the single shot itself is huge and looks like an oversized spear tied to string. When a shot has 30 distance (your dice combined with other's dice adds to 30) it has arrived at the ballista itself and can be loaded. That ballista is complete and you can move to the other four. Don't forget to write in OOC how much distance a current ballista shot is being carried at the moment so others know!)

gaia_crown[ SECURING THE DOOR ] TIME TO PILE UP THE DOOR. GRAB anything you can and see if it helps. The greater the defense on this door, the less damage you will take during the actual siege round. - Post in bold red at the top of the post you are securing the door - Roll 1d8 to see what object you grab. Each object has a resistance. RP this out! - Add that object's resistance to the post above yours (see example). Then add that to your post so people know. -ROLLS: 1: You grab a table! 10 resistance 2: You grab a chair: 5 resistance 3: You grab a bale of hay. Why.... 0 resistance 4: You grab a horse. LIGHTBRINGER SHUN KURODA - aka he has a working torch
Trouble. Of course there was trouble at hand. Shun rushed to the ramparts, gritting his teeth as he could hear horrible noises from the outside. Something wasn't right, though. He couldn't actually see any attackers, which... made this all the more worrisome.
As he was about to move on, the sky seemed to have broken, revealing a mass of blackness. His eyes widened, and for a moment, he realized that was how the sky truly was. Always.
Suddenly, he was engulfed in darkness. His head began to throb from the cacophony of noises all around. He stumbled around in the darkness until he was able to reach the wall, where he looked down.
The darkness. The horsemen. They were here. Pulling back as he heard Percival shouting, he nodded, then rushed to do his part. First and foremost, he needed light so he could see through the blasted black abyss that was all around. He scrambled about, trying to find something of use. Sure enough, he found some cloth he was able to wrap around a rod. A quick ignition and there was light.

"For ******** sake," she says, trying to grab at the cloth on her own skirt, but fumbling before she can get the match lit because her hands are shaking too badly.
A light flared up beside her and she saw a black-haired man. It's light and it will work. "To the walls!" She yelled at him specifically. She ran to him with a fist full of her skirt's cloth wrapped around a stick and smashed it into his flame. She hated this urgency.

The scraping sound drew him to the walls and Elliot watched as Percival rushed forwards, blue eagle emblazoned on a shield. There were no enemies to be seen. He looked up and saw the sky split, saw shadows spill forth like thick rolling fog --
Elliot, I brought a lantern, lets go out ****** is waiting.
He wondered why he thought the sky was blue in the first place. He wondered when the day had ever been bright. People rushed around him, pushing too and fro. Elliot turned, pressed himself against the wall and fought forward until he reached a small stack of barrels. They would have to do. He fashioned himself a torch but was unable to ignite it. A small frown.
Light appeared in the midst of the people and Elliot pushed his way towards it. "You," he said as he raised his own torch, "any chance you'd like to share?"

He had only just returned from his recent trek into the mountains with Cherry when TK heard the loud crash. First he paused, his grip on his bag tightening as the people around him murmured to themselves. Out of the corner of his eye he could spot people scurrying to other parts of the castle without a second thought, and he almost wanted to praise them for their keen sense of duty, but he always prioritized his goals before anything else.
What were they, even?
Wryly, he put down his things and walked after the gathering crowd of knights and apprentices. Other than the obvious shaking and scraping noises, TK couldn’t see anything awry. His senses told him that overall, everything is normal, but his mind and instincts told him something is terribly wrong here.
It is only when he looked to the sky once, twice, that he noticed a streak in the sky. Rather, it looked more like a cut. He squeezed his eyes shut, flashes of flames and the river and screaming filling up his thoughts. There is only the lingering image of a woman’s smile before he snapped out of it and tried to grab a piece of wood. He clicked his tongue as it failed to light and opted to lean over toward another apprentice to light his own torch instead.

Johan stared up at the rent in the sky, buffeted as the others ran back and forth along the ramparts. As the cut grew, engulfing the sky, the motion around him slowly halted as everyone watched. And then, as the Darkness seemed to shatter through the broken barrier of the sky, Johan realized he recognized this. It had always been like this! The sky had always been dark!
Reeling from the revelation, he tried to figure out how that could be. The Horsemen had brought the darkness with them, hadn't they?
The next thing he knew, he was on his knees, hands clapped over his ears, as he screamed against the noise piercing through his head. A hand shaking his shoulder broke through the noise. Get up! Suddenly able to think, to concentrate on something besides the horrible ringing in his ears, Johan pulled himself back to his feet, and peered over the edge of the ramparts. He forgot to breathe for a second.
Horsemen.
Johan stared at the enemy, his enemies. His to destroy. There were so many. He would certainly die, but rather than fear, he felt a grim determination to sell his life at a costly price to these monsters.
Flickering light broke out further down the ramparts. Johan looked to see that someone had constructed a torch. Light. Yes, they needed light. Looking around himself, he noticed an empty crate pushed against the wall of the rampart. Kicking it to pieces with the heel of his boot, he grabbed several long pieces, and tore a strip from his bandages to wind about the head. Barrels of pitch were usually kept on the rampart, right? Johan ran along them until he found one, and pried the lid off. He soaked the end of the makeshift torch in pitch. He had no means to light the torch, though.
Where'd that other torch-bearer gone? Johan stumbled past others as he followed the light. He wasn't surprised to find Shun holding it. The man was nothing if not practical.
"Shun." he said, holding forward his torch. "Let me have a bit of that light, if you would."

Not long after he returned from his quest—Wilson stared curiously at the gauntlets, it was an honor to receive them, but he had no particular use for them—he heard the crash. He flinched, then wildly looked around to find the source of the noise. With such a loud sound, he knew it couldn’t be anything good. One hand clutching his chest, he ran to the outskirts of the castle, but found nothing suspicious. The more he found nothing, the slower he began to move until he returned to a confused walk.
And when he looked up, the sky breathed—
A light whack in the head. ”You’re—“ Whack. “—always—“ Whack. “—like—“ Whack. “—that!” Frowning, he tried to reach out for the other boy.
“That’s not—“
—He found himself on the floor.
Frantically, he got back to his feet and tried to light a torch. Gritting his teeth, he ran toward the nearest person with a working torch.

Estel froze, staring up at the sky.
This was normal. She remembered that, now. How had she forgotten? She had been so certain it was different a moment ago...
A torch flared to light somewhere up on the ramparts, and Estel grabbed a stick and ran towards it, stumbling a bit in her haste. She lit a torch from Shun's.
She didn't want to look - but she looked. s**t. That was a mistake. She tore her eyes away rapidly, stumbling down to get to work.

He could have withdrawn the linen wrappings from his leather guard, but he figured it could serve better purposes. Resourceful as he was, he couldn't help anyone without something to wrap their wounds with. He had found a wooden splinter that must have been part of a straw training dummy, but it would have served a better purpose if he could light it.
Failing to do so, he sought out the beacon in the darkness. Just like that, the shadow fled from his vision as light bloomed nearby with the familiar crack. Jerking his head around, he wasted no time in making his way to the torch holder himself.
"Thank lord someone managed to get a lit." He uttered, his sword drawn. Looking about, being able to take in the surrounding with what was able to be seen. The Ballistas on the Ramparts is probably their best bet to down some of the army on the otherside of the walls. It seemed the moment he had created light, he had a small swarm of other knight-apprentices coming to help ignite their own torches. He sighed and stood still, lighting them all as they came. One girl shouted at him to head to the walls. Yes, he was getting there.
"Where do you think I am going?" he grunted.
Once he was done lighting other people's torches, he rushed to where the ballistas were. They needed to be loaded up. With a furrowed brow, he looked for where their ammunition was, soon finding it. Damn it was big. With a grunt, he went on and started to try and bring it over to the first weapon.

CHEL IS LOADING BALLISTA ONE
Chel was offput by the guy's response, but she couldn't say she would have answered the question any differently. As long as he was moving, she was fine.
She followed the ball of light admist the screams and shouts of everyone on the ramparts. You think that the greatest king in the land would have had more organization to his army (but then again they were all new, so she couldn't really blame the one in charge. It just felt good to have a face to curse at when faced with an amorphous army).
There wasn't really effort on her part. She picked up one side of the ballista to help the twosome, but didn't put in as much strength as she could have.
