traits
Free-Spirited |With a nomad for a mother and a travelling merchant for a father, the desire for freedom and discovery run deep inside Juno. There’s not a lot of structure in his life, and hardly anything in the way of rules or routine. Change and instability are the only constants in his life, and he’s learned not to worry about things beyond his control. Where will his family go next? When will his father come home? How will they find supplies to continue their travels? All these things are like the wind to him -- they come when they will, or when they must, and when they come he will deal with them as the circumstances demand. It’s not always an easy life, but he’s happy this way; it shows in his wide, confident stride and his loud laughter. He has wide spaces to move in, fresh air to breathe, and it seems as if nothing in the world is forbidden to him.
Shrewd |His mother is somewhat renowned as a temptress, a wild-eyed and beautiful gypsy with bold red hair and a captivating smile. Juno’s inherited some of her charm… but instead of relying on sensuality to get what he wants, he’s taken after his father and learned more than a fair share of merchants’ tricks. He’s got a gregariously warm personality and a way of pulling people in, eyes glittering as he works them over with jokes and laughter and compliments. He rarely takes no for an answer, and will do all that he can to get the answer he’s looking for; flirting, flattery, bribery, barter, blackmail -- whatever it takes. Right now, all this plotting gets him very little beyond an extra helping of food at mealtimes, but his father is starting to think that the boy has some genuine potential.
Business-Minded |Frankly, profit-making is not something Juno’s nomadic family really thinks about, and without his father’s influence no doubt Juno would have grown up just the same; but his father is a businessman, and Juno’s learning fast. He’s been absorbing the man’s rambling about the routes he takes and the deals he makes, and all the considerations one must make as a trader. Juno’s fascinated by this -- how does one take something, and through a series of exchanges turn it into something so much more valuable? It’s practically magic! His nomadic lifestyle gives him opportunities for practice, and thus far he’s been making a little pocket money trading things back and forth between settlements and other travelling bands. He’s starting to hatch some bigger plans… it may soon be time to take this game to the next level.
history
childhood backstory | When his father, Oleksy, came to Sauti to trade, he found a lot more than opportunities for profit. He found a woman -- Adea, a nomadic Wind beauty who was nothing like the wife he had acquired through an arranged marriage, and everything he wanted in a lover. She was spirited, adventurous and wild, and entirely unconcerned about the fact that he would disappear for months at a time. She was like a breath of fresh mountain air -- and he was hooked. He saw her again and again, tracking down her travelling caravan on all his visits to the region, finding excuses to stay longer and longer each time.
One day he came to find Adea radiant and swollen with child. She told him it was his, but much to his surprise (and relief) she did not insist on marriage… or even ask him to stick around. The child, while welcome, did not seem to have any effect on her open-minded nature. And so it continued, with Oleksy spending his days shuttling back and forth between his family's home in Jauhar and his lover and her newborn child. He never dared to tell either woman about the existence of the other, but for different reasons. With Margo, it was breaking the woman’s heart that he was afraid of, and disappointing his family on the whole. But with Adea, who expected neither commitment nor monogamy, it was her ridicule that he dreaded the most. To find out that her brave, wandering trader was a poor married man, tied to a boring old jungle shrew -- she’d laugh him right out of her bed!
So Juno grew up with a father who came and went -- but this did not seem particularly unusual to a nomadic wind boy. Everything in his life came and went, and Oleksy was differentiated only by the fact that he was the favorite of all the comings. Although quite close to his mother, Juno is definitely daddy’s boy. He’s fascinated by Oleksy’s life (well, the part of it that he knows about) and the strange lands that he sees on his travels. More than once, he has asked his father to take him along on a trading loop, and while his mother was always in support of this, Oleksy has always put it off on account of Juno being much too young for the trip. But with a son growing taller, bolder, and more capable by the day, that excuse is starting to wear a little thin...
prentice | Finally, Oleksy agreed to take Juno with him on his trip back towards Oba. He also mentioned that Juno had a half-sister, which the boy was immediately itching to meet. They set out together and Juno learned many things about long-distance travel, but they split up upon arrival to Jauhar, because Juno had grand ambitions that his father didn't share. Juno had his mind set of becoming a famous brewer, but the old shifter he was hoping to learn from rejected him outright for being too nosy and brash. To make matters worse, all his trade goods were stolen in the jungle, and he had to tramp back to his father in Oba, defeated. On the way back, however, he learned not to worry too much about momentary setbacks, and resolved to continue working towards his goal.
today | A successful Oban brewer has promised to take him on as a delivery man... if he can provide his own wagon. Juno has one half of a wagon team and no wagon, so he needs to do some work to make up the money...
_________ ○ non-player characters | • player characters
Aaricia • A hybrid girl fire/ice girl who had his attention the moment she walked into his line of sight. Juno met her in the marketplace while taking his turn hawking bread from the bakery's stand. Although their initial chat was brief, both took enough of a liking to each other to arrange a later meeting date. For Juno, who has never expressed interest in a girl quite so openly, it took some courage!
Adea ○ Juno’s mother is the wind in his sails; her easy-going nature is what allowed the boy to grow into an inquisitive and ambitious youth. She never withheld anything from him – truth, freedom, space to roam and explore on his own time, and welcoming affection when he needed it. He travels with her blessings, and he thinks of her often.
Ichil • Juno met Ichil at the bakery. It was sort of disastrous at first -- he spilled flour all over her -- but he took a liking to her when she didn't react like a haughty noble. They had a good conversation and she left him a very helpful tip. He'd gladly spend more time with her if the opportunity arose!
Oleksy ○ As a child, Juno idolized his father – a travelling merchant who would always disappear for months, return for a while, and set off again. It seemed to him like an excellent way to live; a larger and more exciting version of the nomadic lifestyle he already lead within Sauti. Now that he’s growing older, he’s starting to see through his father’s cracks… but he loves the man all the more for it.
Padma • Padma was one of the first people he talked to when he arrived in Tale with his father. She tried to play a bit of a trick on him, but they made up fine, and went off in search of something to eat. They got to try some interesting delicacies from Jauhar, and all in all Juno was pleased to have someone to talk to who wasn't his dad.
Phaedra • Juno met Phaedra on the tail end of a disappointing failure in the jungles of Jauhar. He had lost all his accumulated trade goods to a group of bandits, and was starting to doubt his ability to travel safely on his own. She offered to take him as far as the Oban border and sympathized with his struggles to make something of himself, helping him look back on his mistakes as more of a learning experience then a failure. He looks up to her as someone who is smart, strong and very capable.
Vodyanoi • Juno noticed Vodyanoi traveling across the Oban desert on foot and stopped to offer the guy a ride. He was rather flashy-looking, and given the drum he carried, Juno wasn't at all surprised to learn that he was a performer. He learned that Vodyanoi had just split from his troupe to explore Tendaji, and that upon his return he'd take over as the troupe's leader. He strikes Juno as someone who's not quite ready for that kind of responsibility, but figures the guy has time to sort it out.
Zumei • Juno met Zumei shortly after setting out with his father for the first time. While the older man was asleep, the two prentices single-handedly chased off some bandits! Juno was impressed by Zumei's willingness do undertake a dangerous mission to save complete strangers. Although she had confessed that she was a little nervous about travelling on her own, she seemed very bold in Juno's eyes!
Tamim[cert] Tamim is a large, patient brown quhar. He used to belong to an Oban noble, but was traded to Juno for a half-barrel of beer after the end of the conflict with the Alkidike extremists. Juno hadn't ever seen an animal like him until then... but he's quickly growing fond of the beast, who seems to be able to carry his growing stash of trade goods without hesitation.
bag A colourful bag for packing around personal positions and small trade goods. Juno was given this by the nomads he met in the Oban desert, and although it's not very valuable, it's important to him.
maps & notebooks Juno is learning all he can from his father and others about Tendaji, it's settlements and ways to get around. He got lost in the desert once... he's not intending to do it again. Alongside directions, his notebooks also hold the knowledge he's collected about brewing and fermenting beverages, among other things.
