Personality
Overview
---At first appearances, Jessamine is simply a quiet girl. She's watchful from the wall in a crowded room, maybe, or content just to nod in response if questioned. It'll take some time before someone comes to realize that no, it's not simply shyness, but the fact that she can't speak at all. Jessa is selectively mute - has been since she witnessed her mother's quick and violent fight with illness that spiraled downhill - and she has strong feelings about this fact. While she was a relatively shy young child, choosing to cling to her mother's skirts and peer around her than go off to meet people on her own, she was never quite afraid of people or how they would react to her. She simply chose to observe rather than bridge the gap herself. Nowadays? She's more than nervous about how people will react to her inability to speak, she's downright terrified. She's heard stories of how cruel bullies can be, namely warned by her father first and foremost when she was first growing up, and she's aware that there's a number of them who might come after her and that she won't be able to defend herself.
Jessa's quite a peacekeeper, really, and was raised to be so by pacifistic parents who valued the relative peace of the Celestial Plane and decided that all creatures had a mutual worth. She can't fight worth anything even at the young age that she is, and now that she can't try to talk her way out of situations - not that she would have succeeded before - she simply hopes that her tiny legs are quick enough to help her run from any confrontation.
There's a bright intelligence behind her violet eyes, though, and she's most fond of listening in on conversations around her and gleaning every bit of information that she can from them. Until she can figure out a method of communicating with others - learning to sign her words seems pointless if few others can understand, writing everything down seems tedious and easy for others to get bored and lose focus, regaining the use of her voice seems completely impossible - a listener is all that she is. She can be found more often than not in the kitchen of her academy in between lessons at the moment, helping the cooks with their tasks and taking in everything they have to offer her.

History
Before - Her Parents
Jessamine was born to two young dovaa who'd barely gotten a grasp on life themselves. Her father, Silas, was a blacksmith only just barely out of his apprenticeship, and her mother, Lavynia, a more outspoken woman who had no profession and instead chose to step out into the world and speak against the violence she often saw taking place, urging hot-blooded dovaa to maintain their neutrality in the war going on beyond the Vortex. She often made trips to the rest of Magesc to try to coax those on other continents to put down their weapons and to live in peace, often to no avail. Lavynia was a free-spirited woman, to say the least, incredibly outgoing and headstrong, who made a number of enemies in Soudul in particular. Still, she was always under the impression that she was under no harm, and given that she could run as fast as the wind she often had nothing to fear.
The two of them met as children in a small village near the edge of the Plane, such close friends that it was assumed they'd eventually get married. Lavynia scoffed at the idea, didn't have many romantic urges in the first place, while Silas adored her and swore he'd do anything to help her achieve her dreams. While he'd always had a fascination for blacksmiths and how easily they could shape things out of materials far more malleable than he imagined, there was a tiny spark of him that leaned toward the career because it would give him the opportunity to make her all sorts of armor that could keep her safe on her travels.
By the time she was nineteen Lavynia made her first journey out of the Vortex, and another less than a year later. She was charming enough to always have a place to stay in unfamiliar towns, clever enough to find ways to repay them. Back home, Silas was her most captive audience, and every time she came home her visits to his little hut would lengthen and lengthen until she was staying the night, then for a few days, and then, after one late night, ending up in his bed. She made it perfectly clear to him the next morning that he was her best friend, that he was cute, that she wouldn't mind playing around with him a bit more, but that things were never going to get more serious than that, and it took Silas a long bit of time - enough time for her to go on another journey and return - before he agreed to the arrangement. It was too much for him to think about letting her friendship go just from a little frustration and jealousy.
Gradually Silas's hut became her safe space and base of operations when she was home, and their friendship became nigh on unbreakable. Around a year after their first entanglement, she discovered she was pregnant. She was ecstatic, though a bit nervous, and several long conversations led her and Silas to decide that they'd raise the baby together. He was nearly out of his apprenticeship at that point, and they were confident they could raise their child even without being a mated pair, especially since Silas had no plans to move elsewhere and had a strong support system in their little village. Lavynia continued her travels until she narrowly avoided an assassination attempt around halfway through her pregnancy and decided it was too dangerous to her child's health to continue, instead choosing to stay close to home until the birth.
Before - The Childhood
Jessa had a stable beginning to her life, to say the least. Her mother and father were both around almost constantly, and once she was old enough to be trusted she was even allowed in her father's forge to watch him work. He was very young, just starting to eke out a living, but Lavynia's charming effect over the village was enough to draw him enough customers to keep their bellies full and to spoil Jessa with a handmade toy every once and a while.
Still, Lavynia was clearly restless. She knew it was still too dangerous to travel back out to Magesc, but frequently made her way around the Celestial Plane instead, spending days at a time at Astral City. Silas and Jessa grew closer and closer in those days, though her relationship with her mother didn't deteriorate, necessarily. It was simply...different without her. Lavynia was such a headstrong woman that Jessamine often relied on her to narrate most of Jessa's reactions to things, to speak for her, et cetera. Without Lavynia around Jessa was at odd ends, didn't know how to state her own opinion, didn't even know what her opinion on things were.
Jessamine had just turned ten years old when her mother decided it was time to travel to Magesc again. Lavynia and Silas had only just began looking for apprentice opportunities for Jessa, and Klefstad Academy in Astral City seemed to present a fantastic way for her to learn a trade before she went on to find a master to apprentice under, and just before her mother left for her journey she smiled and kissed Jessa on the forehead and murmured that she'd be back just in time to hear of her acceptance to the academy. She was incredibly confident in Jessa, suggested perhaps that her own influence might even be able to win her a scholarship to pay for the student expenses, and though Jessa highly doubted her own skills when she thought she showed no particular aptitude she trusted her anyway.
Jessa and her father were asleep one night when the front door flew open and Lavynia appeared, three months earlier than her scheduled return date. She was devastatingly pale, her normally red eyes a faint shade of pink, and she barely made it inside before she collapsed to the ground. The village doctor was out of town, traveling for the birth of his grandson a number of miles away, and his apprentice could barely diagnose the illness, only said that it was far advanced, whatever it was. He tried a number of medicinal herbs, a bit of magic, everything he could muster, but it barely seemed to have an effect.
Two weeks later, he murmured that they needed to say their goodbyes.
Her mother died violently, spitting blood, gasping for breath, and though her father tried to bar her from the room Jessa watched every second of it through a crack in the wall. She was a pale shadow of herself when she was cleaned up for the wake. It seemed almost impossible that it could be her lying there on the bed when she was so vibrant, so full of life.
Jessa lost her voice the night she watched her mother die, and she has no idea how to get it back.
Present - The Academy
When Jessamine's acceptance letter to Klefstad Academy arrived - on full scholarship as well, against all odds - she lost all will to go to the school. She had no idea who she was anymore without her mother to dictate it and the thought of leaving her father behind was impossible to imagine. It took time for her to become aware that her father had sold a number of things to try to pay for her mother's care during her rapid decline, that he had almost no way to eke out a living anymore, that the both of them would likely starve if nothing changed. As hard as it was, she finally agreed to go to the academy and was rewarded by her father's immense gratitude.
This day and time, she's only been at the academy for a few weeks, and she has no idea where she's going to fit into its world. She's learning general skills - words, arithmatic, et cetera - but shows no aptitude for the majority of the more technical skills taught. Her only solace these days is her assigned work in the kitchen, and she never once complains about peeling potatoes or stirring a stew, not if it gives her a quiet, dark place to linger while still being surrounded by the sweet older cooks who work there.

Friends and Foes
Family
Silas (Father) - heartheartheart : Jessamine deeply adores her father, more than she's ever had the capacity to say even when she could speak. He's her rock, her only support left in this world, and now that she's pursuing studies she misses him deeply. Lavynia (Mother) - deceased - heartheartheart : Jessa swears sometimes that she can still hear her mother's voice, her soft laugh, that sometimes she wakes up and thinks she can see her standing over her. She doesn't think it's possible to miss a person as greatly as she misses her.

Foes
Erahn Ryko - stare : Their interaction was brief but ended unpleasantly, with Erahn essentially calling her selective mutism fake and she herself a liar. Jessa's carrying a pretty hefty grudge against him because of it.

Jessamine's mother, Lavynia, was an aromantic pansexual polyamorous woman who carried on a number of sexual relationships across every continent that she visited. The fact that Jessa received her full scholarship to Klefstad Academy, for example, is purely because Lavynia and the Headmaster had a relationship that built up after she gave a lecture to the older students one year - this can possibly be discovered and contested if anyone develops a distaste for Jessa. While Lavynia never mothered more children than Jessa, it's possible that she had various affairs with any number of existing characters here, and thus that Jessa might have a connection to them one day. Jessamine's mother was poisoned by an Oblivionite who didn't quite appreciate her message of neutrality and peace. It was a poison specifically designed to target a Dovaa body, though none in the village at the time of Lavynia's arrival home were able to pinpoint it as anything other than a mysterious illness. It's possible that Jessa might encounter someone who was aware of this plot in her eventual travels. Jessa is going to grow into being demisexual and polyamorous as well, though this is unnecessary to focus on at the moment given that she's still a child.
