It was familiar in a way that made Peyton's chest tight. Walking through the Life labs, a lunch bag in hand. She'd done it for Noah, he was always forgetting to eat lunch, but the sandwich she'd made wasn't going to him this time. It was for Astrid, the smaller Creedy having hinted at being hungry some twenty minutes prior. Peyton, of course, had immediately set into motion to remedy this problem as soon as possible.

Of course being there in the labs left the Sun feeling a touch twitchy. Her eyes were a little wide as she stole quick glances into the various rooms, searching for Astrid while trying to avoid catching sight of her ex.

Luck, at least for the moment, was on her side. She found her sister close to the room they kept the minipets in. "Yo, little Bear. Brought you something." The mere sight of the smaller blonde was enough to chase away a little of the creeping tension and she grinned, waving the bag out between them.

"Oh my god," said Astrid, spinning her office chair around several times in her excitement. There wasn't really a desk here, just a counter, and it was currently half-covered with what looked like incredibly boring paperwork. She stuck her pen behind her ear and made gimme hands at what she assumed was her lunch. "Please, please, let it be full of carbs, whatever it is. It's a good think you brought this to me instead of leaving it out, people grab whatever isn't nailed down around here."

Lunch break. Jack stretched out and removed Claude's latest defacement of his desk, rolled it up, and tossed it into the trash. Several mission reports were closed up and stacked under his stapler for the time being, and as he stood, the giant picked up his mug and considered getting his third cup of the day now or later. Guess it depended on what was for lunch...

Empty mug in hand, he began making his way out of the labs, stopping only when he heard Peyton's voice. Curious, she didn't tend to be at the labs except to drop something off maybe. More curious was when he turned to find her and, upon sighting the blond and pink locks, noted that there was a strikingly familiar looking trainee talking with her. Then he recollected when and where he had seen that face.

"Well hello there, Creedy," Jack greeted the eldest with a more pleasant tone than he usually did, lifting his mug a little as he approached. "Funny, catching you here; the labs don't suit you. Who's your little friend?"

"Well there's bread," she chuckled, handing the bag over. "So there's some carbs, at least." The sandwich in question was a grilled cheese, and she'd also include a single serving bag of chips and a soda. It was highly reminiscent of the bag lunches she used to make for Astrid for school before they'd subbed brown paper for school lunches.

"And don't I know it." Nothing was sacred here, it was a lesson learned quick. "How's it going, baby?"

The grin she was wearing faltered just a touch at the voice, and and likely would have sent a withering look his way of not for that pleasant tone and the presence of her sister. His a initial was still on her ribs, a thin, white scar that didn't seem likely to fade anytime soon. It wasn't nearly as bad as her foot, but the latter didn't seem to bother her much.

But she could be cordial, even sweet. "Hey Jack." This was inevitable, she smiled as she gestured to the smaller blonde. "This is the sister I was telling you about, Astrid."

Astrid, utterly oblivious to both subtext and context, saw no harm in answering with a quiet tease. "I promise she's not gonna break anything," she said, seizing on the soda with a little noise of delight and setting it aside before finally extending a hand towards Jack and pushing a curl behind her ear. "I guess I've seen you around but we haven't met yet."

She was, truly, very similar to her older sister, at least as far as appearances went--smaller, more freckled, maybe a little softer around the edges although it was hard to tell based just on the visible length of an arm. The smile was different, though--all shy hesitation. "I like your hair," she said.

"You could say I strike something of a noticeable figure wherever I go," he agreed with a chuckle as he took her hand and gave it a firm, cold-handed shake. "Jack Hawthorn. The pleasure is all mine, Astrid. I've been waiting to meet you since Peyton mentioned you woke up. Welcome to the Life division. Always nice to meet someone with manners," he added with a grin.

He spared a glance at Peyton. "Have you shown her around yet? I remember you mentioned she was stationed somewhere else for quite a while."

My, weren't they being down right chummy. Peyton stood between and a little to the side of both of them as Jack reached for Astrid's hand, and she maintained that bright, friendly smile as the tall man spoke, chuckling at her sister's joke, at Jack's light banter. When push came to shove the pair of veteran hunters could play it off as if there was nothing but good nature and comradery between them, and in this instance that worked just fine. Whatever dysfunction they shared on the side was separate, and that was how Peyton liked it. It made things so much easier, probably for both of them.

Green eyes fell to her, and she lifted pale brows, head tipping as he asked his question, and she nodded. "Lebanon, though I did show her around before she was transferred."

"I haven't gotten lost all week," she informed him, and it was joking but, equally, it was relieved. "What're you studying around here? I think they've decided that my area of expertise is sorting spreadsheets," she added, making a face.

He nodded with a low whistle. "Better than most. I still have a dumbass who loses his things, and he's been here for about a year now."

Jack made to sip from his mug, forgot that he still needed to refill, and made a small face at it. "What I feel like at the moment," he answered. "Scant research in general if something piques my interest, nothing hardcore just yet. Normally collecting what I can about the genetic information of Fear from several different sources, although I have been looking into the red eye phenomena for your sister in my spare time." He was curious to know if Peyton had mentioned that yet, or if she was deciding to keep tight lipped despite her recent troubles. "They always start you small. What are you, eighteen? Giving you the big guns from the get go is a recipe for disaster, but you'll eventually get your hands on them."

To the elder Creedy's credit she managed not to shoot a glare at the giant as the topic of research narrowed down into specifics, if only because she was prepared for it. The red eye was something that Astrid would hear about eventually, Peyton had no hope of keeping it from her, not when more and more hunters were falling victim to it. She rolled her eyes up to jack, meeting those emerald greens for handful of seconds. "To which I am very grateful." Lips twitched, tugging up in a smile, and she looked away, back down to her sister.

"Either they'll stick you on a project that needs more man power, or you'll come up with your own to work on." She recalled Noah and his plants, the effects of Fear exposure of edible crops.

"Or," she added after a short, thoughtful pause. "They'll shuffle you into the infirmary." Or possibly the library. There seemed to be no shortage of tasks to keep Lifers busy.

Astrid was torn somewhere between gratification that Jack had not asked her if she was, like, what, fifteen? and indignation at the implication that she couldn't handle her own projects, just because she was young and new. Luckily the sudden flush could be attributed to shyness rather than the anger it was--it was an easy mask to sustain.

She cast Peyton an unreadable glance at the "red eye" comment but said nothing (saved for later, no doubt), leaving Jack's curiosity probably unsatisfied.

"I'm sure I'll find something, god knows I'm not in any hurry if these are the hours they expect the dedicated techs to keep," she said. "How long were you here before you started looking at--what was it? The genetic information of FEAR?"

medigel
she's remembering that for later you jerk xD

"Infirmary work is technically under the tenure of Moon and some Mist mainly, but some of us do end up being tasked with the work. As for how long it took, I don't remember exactly," he replied. "A while. There's a lot to digest here even if you have a strong background in research. But I do know you won't get any good stuff until at least the intermediate trainee level, and even then it's a bit of a bureaucratic nightmare to both prove you're capable of handling whatever it is you want, get the permission to do so, and then getting ahold of the information you need to even begin. Helps if you're on the good side of the cataloguing specialist like I am, but still."

He started to perk and even smile. "However, the nature of Fear is unlike anything else in the natural world and is well worth the study, even if it does sometimes require that you throw out everything you know. For instance, I've found a species of minipets that reproduce quickly and have been attempting to monitor inheritance patterns across generations, which I will say is something else as Halloween reproduction itself is--"

He decided to stop himself there and cleared his throat.

"Patience and hard work," Jack continued. "And of course, a pair of steady hands. You're welcome to shadow me sometime, Astrid, if that interests you."

Lavender met hazel briefly, and it was a passive look, unreadable. If the younger Creedy asked, they'd talk about it. If she left it alone, it was one less awful thing she'd have to tell the girl. Still protecting, still sheltering. She couldn't keep Astrid from the horrors forever, but she could sure as ******** try.

As the two talked the elder girl fell quiet, standing by rather superfluously for the moment. It wasn't until Jack mentioned job shadowing that she reacted much beyond the benign smile she'd been wearing, but that made her stiffen.

She caught Peyton's eye again, but not long enough to catch her sister's discomfort. She was too swept up in her own obvious triumph, a little bit of bashful pride. She assumed, after all, that Jack was her friend, and here he was inviting her along on what sounded like work he found very interesting.

"Right now," she said, "everything is interesting. I'm trying to get my hands in as much as I can, to be honest, before I settle down somewhere. I promise they're steady. If you'd like to have me," she finished shyly, twisting her sleeve in her fingers, "I'd be super happy to tag along one day. Maybe I can talk Peyton into bringing you lunch too," she added, nudging her sister with her toe playfully.

"I like the sound of that. I'll bring the coffee!" Jack offered with a grin. "Or whatever your preference of drink may be. I'll see about signing you on for some shadowing whenever you feel up to it, then."

He raised his mug towards Peyton as if to toast her. "Lucky you, having such a close bond with your sibling even after everything, eh? It's refreshing to see something nice here for a change. She's been very good at keeping an eye on people here," he added to Astrid as a matter of factly. "No doubt a skill that's kept you both safe in the past and probably what makes her a great Sun. The more you work here, the more you realize how dangerous the world really is; you're lucky as well your sister can watch out for you here, Astrid."
