The stars in the dark

She'd made mac and cheese that night, because it was nostalgic. The first thing she'd learned to cook for her sister, and the recipe she'd expanded on the most. The early evening had been spent picking up the mess of scattered items on Peyton's bed and packing them up neatly again, sharing stories. The highs and lows they'd been missing.

She didn't tell Astrid about the red, or about Noah, yet. It was too peaceful, too perfect. She didn't want to spoil it. Soon, she'd told herself, just not yet.

They'd crawled into bed early with a movie playing quietly, lighting up the dark of the room. The latest Disney film, kindly donated from Dwight, but the elder Creedy wasn't really paying a lot of attention to it. Something about robots.

Her attention was on her sister. On the small braid of golden hair she was weaving into the curls at the back of Astrid's head. One of many. Peyton hand cuddled up against the smaller girls back, huddling around that warmth, that blissful familiarity. She let everything else, ever worry and woe, slid away, if only for that moment.

Because it was perfect.

The great vacuum of space

The bags were gone, but what clothing she'd found added to her drawers and closet did not account for the amount of luggage the tiny Life had dragged into her room upon first arrival. It was a curious thing.

Cracks and fissures

When the movie had ended Peyton had sent America home with promises that she'd be alright, that she'd call in the morning. The ice cream was gone, the cartons thrown away, spoons washed and dried. Everything was in order again, down to the blanket folded on the back of the futon. Everything, but the two rings and the key still sitting on the table.

Peyton still hadn't touched them, had no intention of doing so tonight, because she still didn't know what to do with them.

Instead she headed into her bathroom to take a shower. It was warm, the sound of water downed everything else out, and it was easy to loose track of time with the unlimited heat the island's hot water tanks provided.

The stars in the dark

Astrid's attention wasn't much on the movie either, although it wasn't on Peyton, either, or at least not Peyton-as-she-was, present and real. She was thinking about how bizarrely normal this felt, how easily the old rhythms had returned despite everything strange in their life.

She liked it. She hated it. Peyton trying to braid her hair despite the fact that it was gone was both a pang and a triumph.

It was not perfect. It was perfect. It was not perfect.

She drowsed, in and out of sleep, and finally she spoke. "Do you like it here?"

The great vacuum of space

She'd been trying to move things discreetly, but try was operative. She had not been successful, and even if she had, by now the sheer quantity of missing objects--to say nothing of missing time--would need answering.

So she brought it up cheerily, catching Peyton in the hallway as she trailed still bedheaded down towards her day in the labs, as Peyton was coming back from her run, both of them headed in the direction of the cafeteria.

"I decided," she said quite suddenly, "to pick up a room. Just in case." A pause. "Like, extra closet space."

Cracks and fissues

Astrid came in singing to herself, 'cause a cat's the only cat who knows--

And she stopped, and she looked at the table, for a moment baffled before realization seeped in.

She headed tentatively towards the bathroom door, and lifted her voice above the sound of the water.

"Do I need to go beat someone up?" she asked.

The stars in the dark

In the comfortable warmth fingers would slow, momentarily pausing as heavy lids fell closed and sleep sucked at the Sun, but she shook it off, time and time again. Despite the weeks of terrible sleep, the extended exhaustion. Just a few more minutes.

She'd dreamed Astrid's presence once, waking to find her half of the bed cold and empty. She was scared it would happen again, that the smaller girl was a product of her sleep deprived mind. Warrick rumbled in the quiet, insisting that wasn't the case, urging his partner to let go, but she was stubborn.

That soft, sweet voice yanked her back from the brink, and she blinked tired eyes, slid her fingers though those silky curls. Shorter, but no less soft, and they smelled of shampoo and soap, and her.

For a moment she was quiet, finishing off the braid before letting go and sliding one arm beneath the pillow and the other around the smaller girl's waist, cuddling in tight against her back. "It's consistent," she offered thoughtfully, chewing on the word, as if not quite satisfied by it. "Crazy s**t happens all the time, but somehow this is still more stable then life had been at home." She pressed her face into the curve of a bony shoulder. Peyton still carried an incredible amount of guilt over leaving. Good intentions that had completely backfired.

The great vacuum of space

That familiar voice drew Peyton around and blinked at her sister, head drifting to one side as she took in what Astrid was saying. Picked up a room. Away from the elder Creedy, away from the alluring comforts of a full hunter's suite. Granted the small blonde had not been absent at night, but the time she spent in the room while not sleeping, or showering, was notably less.

Peyton had attributed it to falling back into the groove of Life duties, but apparently that wasn't the only thing keeping her sister busy lately.

"Oh." Not upset, but not happy either. It wasn't as if she could appreciate Astrid wanting a little room to herself, specially having spending months away, and a year and some change before that--it just seemed...sudden?

Or it was the elder girl's well buried neediness bubbling to the surface. Her desire to keep her sister close, to rekindle that fractured bond. To keep a familiar, warm body in her bed to make it possible to sleep though the night.

She didn't say any of this. Instead she smiled, pausing until Astrid had caught up to her before resuming her pace. "Let me know if you need any help."

Cracks and fissures

She heard Astrid come in, melodic voice drifting through the studio layout of the suite, and the abrupt stop to the melody.

Soft foot steps approaching, barely heard above the sound of the shower. The question had thin shoulders hunching beneath the spray, features crumbling. not anger, but all the hurt and pain that she'd stubbornly refused to acknowledge throughout the rest of the day. It crawled up now, digging past her shields, and it was impossible to tell the difference between the water that ran down her face, and the first hot spill of tears. And that was fortunate.

Her breath caught on a sharp inhale, thin chest shaking as it escaped. The water cut off, the curtain clattered noisily along the bar as it was shoved, and Peyton grabbed a long towel from the basin as she stepped out onto the mat. Wrapping it tight, she went for the door.

She was rubbing at her eyes as it opened, and she tried for a smile that fell woefully short. America had offered to kick Noah's a** as well. the offer was appreciated, then and now, but she didn't want him hurt. Not physically. "I'll be fine." Not exactly a lie. Peyton had always handled hurt and hardship better than most. Eventually she would be fine, but hr chest heart, her throat felt tight, and her eyes stung.

The stars

There was a long, sleepy silence.

"You still call that place home, though."

Great vacuum of Space

"I will," she said cheerfully, but it was a nervous sort of cheer, uneasy, vaguely guilty. "And I'm not, like... going anywhere. You know? Especially my next door neighbor down there's a jackass," she added, with unwonted viciousness.

Cracks and fissures

"Yeah, well, I know that, OK, but... that's not what I asked you," Astrid pointed out, flopping down on the futon and spreading her hands towards the abandoned key. "Let's go freeze a tray of pee and put it under his door. Or I can make you cookie dough. We can't even get salmonella any more," she added soberly.

The stars

The older girl frowned, as if only just realizing Astrid was right.

"Not the houses, they were just shells, places we lived." Home was where Astrid was, but she didn't say it, couldn't, because that lingering ball of guilt in the pit of her stomach grew at the thought.

No matter what her intentions, no matter how she rationalized it, Peyton had left home. There would always be that ashy taste of regret, and though she was more than grateful to have her sister back in her life, it pained her deeply to know what the poor girl had gone through in her absence. Instead of a life, and college, and an actual home she'd had to deal with death, and abandonment, and being alone.

"I love you little bear." She kissed the back of Astrid's shoulder. She wasn't sure what else to say that wouldn't bring up bitterness in one or guilt in the other.

The great vacuum of space

It was comforting to know the little Life wasn't actually moving out so much as expanding her domain.

An arm looped over the smaller sister's shoulders, and Peyton leaned against her as they walked. "Oh yeah? You want me to kick his a** for you?" It was a joke, though there was a certain thread of truth to it that Astrid would recognize.

Cracks and fissures

The lump in Peyton's throat was growing. She watched that small hand gesturing towards the table--at the key and the rings she hadn't looked at since she'd added her own to form a a set.

Pranks didn't seem to hold any appeal, but then they never really had, not even before Deus. She did tear her gaze away from the table at the mention of cookie dough, and as the first hot tear rolled down her cheek she was crossing the room to sink down beside her sister so she could envelope her in a hug.

She hadn't cried when Noah was there, she hadn't cried after, or while America was here, but she did now. The anger was still there, but the pain was rising up finally to overwhelm it. It didn't make any sense. They'd been happy. She'd been happy at least. When had it all gone wrong?

The Stars

There was, at least, this comfort (if comfort it was, and not another reason to worry): she answered immediately, drowsily. "I love you too," she said.

Whatever it was she was thinking about home and what defined it, she was clearly keeping it for later, or possibly for never.

Great Vacuum of Space

"He seems like the sort of person that'd get real bent out of shape if someone like you beat him up," she said cheerily. It was neither a yes nor a no. It almost never had been in the past, either: by and large Astrid simply made a note aloud of the people giving her problems, and let Peyton sort the issue out as Peyton saw fit. "He just woke up and seemed bent out of shape about his accommodations too," she added with a snicker.

Cracks and Fissures

It was an unusual turn of events, and it must be said that Astrid handled it with more outward grace than she felt. Inwardly she felt awkward, uneasy, and she wondered (it was not a kind thought) whether this had been how Peyton had felt for so many years when it was Astrid crying, unable to find a way to slot herself into their constantly-shifting social circles, unable to prevent herself from saying odd things, unable to be anything but alienated from everyone but Peyton, the inevitable recipient of her stormy crying.

She didn't say anything, just let her cry herself out as Peyton had for her so many times, and felt intensely guilty.

"This sucks," she said finally, a little whisper, and it was all fierce sympathy for her. "What can I do?"

Great vacuum of space

A knowing sort of smile slid along soft lips at the thought, and she filed that bit of information away for later. Of course, she'd need a name, a description at the least, if she did in fact feel like doing something about it.

"Well, it's not every trainee that gets to take advantage of of the second floor accommodations. First floor isn't even bad, really, just kinda cramped." Peyton hadn't really minded it, at least. "Basement rooms? No thank you. I dunno how America did it."

Cracks and fissures

It did suck. Peyton hated crying, always had, likely always would. It didn't matter that she was crying to Astrid. If anything, that might have made it all worst, because she was supposed to be the strong one, the pillar, that was her role.

As that whisper filled the silence that had drifted in as the crying had faded Peyton turned her head against the smaller girl's shoulder. "I think you mentioned something about cookie dough?" Never mind she'd shared a pint of ice cream with America only a few hours earlier.
