Maybe he had been under a rock, but he had been glad that Twitter was providing useful for something other than entertainment before falling asleep. Clones was something he never heard of, but it sparked his scientific curiosity like a match to gasoline. How could anyone create another hunter when they still relied on golems? How long had this been around? What side was cloning and why were there, if rumors held any truth, any on the island? If that was the case, how could a clone be so convincing to be able to pass on the island for an existing hunter. Most of all - what was needed?

He waited at the cafeteria doors, arms crossed and leaning against the wall. It was the only way to keep his hands from fidgeting and remaining still.

The hunter he was meeting, on the other hand, approached the issue of restless hands from another direction entirely: give them something to fidget with, in this case a cigarette.

America had been trying to arrange work shifts that kept them together, her watchful eye on him lest he fall into another silent funk, but circumstances intervened, as they nearly always did, and he was alone save for the cloud of smoke following him around, a slick of sweat on his forehead, his coat slung over his shoulder, his hands wracked with a visible tremor.

"Wood?" he asked bluntly, recognition flitting across his face from Twitter.

The man looked horrible. He was unshaved, sweating (which made him wonder if he just left the training grounds), and seemed to be shaking. Did he suffer from tremors or was this a sign of some drug-tied withdrawal? There was also the heavy smell of cigarettes. The last was oddly something he didn't entirely dislike. While he didn't approve of smoking at all, the smell of smoke reminded him of his sister, who had picked up the habit in high school and never seemed able to quit.

"Yes. Melvin Wood. You're Mr. Thompson?" He asked, extending a black-gloved hand to the hunter. "Thank you for meeting with me. I'll try not to take up too much of your time. You...seemed busy when I messaged you."

He had to make sure to prioritize his questions.

"Would you like to sit down in the cafeteria or, if you want, I can walk with you to your next destination."

He shot the gloves a skeptical glance but gave the man a handshake that was far firmer than the trembling, bony hands would have suggested.

"Let's ********' sit down a minute," he said. He didn't want to. He'd far rather have made Melvin trot along at his heels as he stomped off to his room, like a politican dodging a weasely reporter's mic, but he was exhausted. The physical symptoms should long since have passed, but he still found himself worn out easily, wanting to crawl into a bed and stay there unmoving, and so he only managed the Mr. President Has No Comment shtick for the time it took to get to a table and fall, bone-weary, onto a seat. He gave Melvin a bleary look. "Make it quick anyway, I need a ********' shower."

Melvin sat down and brought out a small notebook. He took Saliva, a red pen, from behind his ear and flipped it open.

"How did you first discover about clones and know you were cloned?"

Maybe Taym had said make it quick, but he answered this with a long, slow silence.

"I was there. I was captive in the Sahara and woke up in a Famine hive and there they were." He said this slowly, as if Melvin was very stupid, although why exactly he thought this was a stupid question was impossible to fathom, reasonable as it was. "They only sorta looked like me at the time, and didn't act like me at all. They got better at it."

The Lifer was appreciative and in no took the slow way the man was speaking as insulting. Instead, he found him supportive of his curiosity by speaking slowly enough for him to take adequate notes without rushing.

In hopes of not coming off as too fascinated over what was no doubt a traumatizing experience in the hands of the Famine horsemen, he abstained from saying how wondering it was that he could be here to give this information today. Instead, he pressed on.

"Sorta look like you? Can you explain their differences to you as the original? Were there visible signs or actions that they could not learn to imitate or mask that could give them away - say to someone who doesn't know you personally? You also said there were still some in the Sahara, correct?"

There just HAD to be more.

He shifted, uncomfortable, and made an agitated movement with his hand that meant nothing. "I don't know where they are. They were sort of... bald and..." He thought back, to the skeletal shapes, their skin stretched taut over the jut of hipbones and ribs, the alien shapes of their skull protruding through the fleshless faces. "... I think they were pretty close other than that, just... dead-eyed. And no scars, no tattoos, nothing like that. Blank slates. I don't know how much they can learn. The ones I've talked to didn't have much interest in imitating me specifically. They latch on to sort of... aspects. The last one I ran into could probably pass himself off as me if they... didn't know me too well." He felt sick, it was obvious. "I don't know how good or bad they are other than that."

Taym is just nerd candy for Melvin right now.

"Blank slates, but still identifiable enough to talk and look like you if not for the lack of scarring and tattoos. Seems that acquired conditions such as scarring or placed upon scarring such as tattoos can't be intimidated." He muttered to himself as he took notes.

"Do you know how they cloned you while you were captive? Was any of your genetic material taken or did they use a device of any sort to copy you?" If it was anything like a golem, then maybe they had a rather crude way to imprint information on a blank body. If not, they somehow grew upon a small amount of genetic material from a hunter. It was all theories so far, but he had a first-hand source willing to speak with him.

"If they spoke with you, did you feel they wanted anything from you?"

He gave a more short laugh.

"Then again I suppose they would want you to live if anything. If they can't die without you dying, then that must mean there is some connection you still have to the clones." And why would Merlin be involved?

He reached up, running a hand through his curly hair as he considered all these thoughts.

"You're making a ******** of a lot of assumptions and doing a hell of a lot of speculation for someone who's supposed to be making a dispassionate scientific inquiry," Taym pointed out, heat rising up slowly behind the agitation.

"Oh, right sorry. I was simply considering the facts and running with a few theories due to a bit of excitement. I mean, seeing as I haven't encountered a clone, based on our information of duplicates of originals with mimicry and using the original as both a tie in to existence and a sort of parent figure to pass by in the world only had me wondering if they consider their own existence something they would need to preserved." he gave a brief laugh. "But listen to me. I don't even know if they even care about their own existence and welfare."

He waved his own silliness off before he tried to become more serious once more. "Alright. You are correct in keeping me from running ahead with what I have. I should stick to necessary information."

He clicked his pen. "Now can you tell me, what scars, tattoos, and other distinguishing features do you process on your person?"

Another withering look.

He presented his right hand: a dead bird, a waxwing, on a pool of red blood. His left: a line of tiny script running along the outside of his hand, hard to catch in the split-second it was presented, moriendum est. Sleeve pushed back, a plain black band around his left forearm, a series of tiny squares underneath it, all of them filled in but one.

He yanked down the scarf to show the rest of the half-seen tattoo encircling his neck, antlers framing a circle-sun and the word haecceity, disrupted by the clearly-visible line of an ugly scar slicing from one ear to the other, as though he'd been garrotted, or caught in some monstrous human-sized rabbit snare. Collar of his shirt shoved aside for the hollow under his alarmingly-clear collarbone (neck and hands suggested a very thin man under all the layers; the clavicle itself suggested a nearly-starved one), and this was the only one he clarified: "bullet wound." Head turned, to demonstrate the ragged chunk missing out of his right ear.

He smoothed the scarf back into his collar, disgruntled. "And a couple more. America," he added in a cryptic deadpan, "at least had the decency to bring me a ********' pie."

Melvin rose up in his seat, leaning in to get a better view of the tattoos which Tayn had an abundance. It put Melvin's small tattoo to shame. He didn't know why the man would go through so many visits but he supposed they didn't have to worry about a dress code so why not?

"You certainly have made tattoo artists happy with as much as you have. I barely dipped my toe in comparison."

He wrote a list with as many discriptions as he could manage in the short instances Taym let him look.

After that he leaned back. "Oh yes. America is a fine lady. I've been helping her with the towns." To which he smiled up at the hunter. "If a pie is what you want, I can certainly provide. If I provide two, may I see the rest of your tattooing?"

He made a noise of outright disgust at that.

"There is no other tattoo. There's a couple scars. My kneecaps look like they got run over by a ******** bus. I think you've got enough to go on in terms of personal inventory. I might reiterate," he added acidly, "that in addition to their other shortcomings they can't summon. Granted there's situations where we can't either, but I can't help but feel like you'll get further with that on the whole than attempting to make an exhaustive attempt to catalog the identifying marks of everyone on Deus who might have crossed paths with Famine or Merlin at some point not that I don't," he finished flatly, "appreciate your desire to be forearmed."

Pie?

He smiled in agreement despite Taym's otherwise sour attitude to some mild teasing. "Oh yes. The information you have provided has been vital to my project and I greatly appreciate you sacrificing your time to meet with me. I was only kidding before." He lied at the last part and continued.

"Though I stand that I would like to show you some appreciation. Do you like pie? I haven't dabbled much, but I think I can repay you well enough in completely a simple pastry. Is there a particular flavor you enjoy?" He said, rising up from his seat as he closed his notebook and slipped Saliva behind his ear.
