A sour-faced, well-dressed unicorn trudged along the sidewalk, glancing back every so often to see if a certain eccentric mare was following. "Did you say burgers?" he called, looking skeptical. "Is that really what you want? I didn't have a place in mind, so maybe you can lead the way. We might have a smaller chance of walking to our doom." He paused. "Though I still don't know how any decision you make could be wiser than mine. Including, I suppose, following me into the west."

An equally sour-faced but badly-dressed mare was trotting just a few steps behind. "Yeah, burgers. Something big and juicy and with plenty of pickles. Lots and lots of pickles. Ugh, that game was stupid," she responded as she tossed her badly made cardboard mace aside. With that discarded on the sidewalk, she sped up to overtake her companion and lead the way. "I can't believe you got us both killed so quickly. You're supposed to be the smart one."

"For once, I agree. Playing games with figures and scenarios are one thing, but actually acting things out seems pointless." The unicorn watched as Shrill went ahead and sneered at her last comment. "There was absolutely nothing to guide logic or sense in that game. It was completely chance. Besides, everyone's capable of mistakes, especially those who consider themselves smart."

Trotting a little faster to come up alongside the mare, Truths stared distantly down at their hooves while they walked. "Speaking of being smart...I've been meaning to ask you some things. In private." He frowned and grumbled under his breath. "Since over the radio didn't work so well..."

Honestly she was only mad because she'd lost and would otherwise have enjoyed herself, but he didn't need to know that. "All those dumb kids in their dumb costumes. We're better off out of it." Shrill X said as she looked over her shoulder at him and laughed. "Is that why I never make mistakes?"

They turned the corner and the a bustling burger restaurant was revealed, clearly doing a good bit of trade. "In private?" She cast him a suspicious narrow-eyed look. "Look, if you're going to confess your love for me-" she started saying and then trailed off as she dug through her mind for their radio conversation.

"Bread girl!" She exclaimed triumphantly, coming to a complete halt. "The one that you're stalking, right?"

Truths would probably have been singing a slightly different tune if he'd lasted longer as well, but that would probably have been because at least then he could have feigned that it was more due to his intelligent choices and deductive reasoning skills than luck. Not that she needed to know that.

Smirking at Shrill's question, he answered in incredulous tones, "Are you kidding me? I've watched you make mistakes since the moment I met you! The more you learn from them, the smarter you get, though, so it just means more opportunities for you to outwit us all. Provided you choose to actually learn from them rather than repeat them, of course."

The unicorn raised a brow at the burger restaurant, but said nothing of it. His stomach rumbled in anticipation of food to come and he wasn't about to be picky with what food that was. He blinked when he noticed Shrill's look. "What?"

"Confe - wha - stop teasing me!" he demanded, face flushing a slightly darker shade as he became visibly flustered. "Her name is Sweet Bread. And I am not stalking her!" Oops. That was a little loud. Truths glanced about to make sure no one else was around to hear before urging Shrill into the restaurant with firm little shoves.

"Come on, let's go in. I'm starving and I won't be able to think straight until I've eaten something."

"Mistakes or intentional not-really-mistakes, nobody knooows" she retorted but didn't really have her heart into it because he was blushing and it was hilarious.

"Sweet Bread," she repeated, still rooted to the spot and grinning from ear to ear. "I can’t wait to hear aaaaaaall about her." She was trying hard not to laugh at him, since it wouldn't be any fun if he took of in a huff, so she gave ground and nodded. "Okay, okay, no need to shove. Let’s eat first."

With Truths in tow, Shrill X entered the restaurant and managed to get a table in front of two other waiting couples with an obnoxious mixture of name dropping (‘Hey, I have a radio show! You listen to it, right?’) and drama (‘This is a matter of love or death! Lives are at stake!’). "It’s all in the attitude," she told him, after they were seated and given menus.

"Royal Blue," she read. "Beef pattie, blue cheese, bacon, onion, pickles and ketchup. So good. What are you getting?"

"Mmhmm," he murmured sarcastically, thinking back to the time she'd almost tried to bungee-jump from a branch with a simple rope before backing off. "I think you're just a show-off."

"And a tease," he added, glaring hard at her. He could see she was trying hard not to laugh, but he wasn't sure if he was grateful she was holding back or if it made him feel worse. For some reason she didn't think she could be herself with him. Or maybe she was just trying to be nice. Who knew with Shrill? He suppose he had turned his temper on her quite a few times in the past. Perhaps she'd grown wary of that.

"You are something else," Truths sighed, shaking his head at the mare's antics as she got them seated ahead of the others. For once, though, he wasn't going to complain because 1. he was starving (enough to probably have shoved his own way up in line with much less talk and much more force, which wouldn't have been good for anyone) and 2. niceness and politeness wasn't exactly in his nature, either. Besides, he was still somewhat lost in his own thoughts.

"I'll have what you're having," he murmured absently, hardly skimming the menu. After handing it back to the server and waiting for them to leave, he leaned over and asked, "Have you ever been in love before, Shrill?"

Shrill X ordered for the both of them and then sat casually back on her chair, watching him with a grin that kept threatening to become a full-blown Cheshire smirk of glee.

"Nope," she answered his question instantly, fiddling absently with the bottle of tomato sauce on their table. "I’ve never actually been in a proper relationship before either, but I have had relations and I know how the whole things works, so I’m not totally clueless. But I sure as hell haven’t felt any of that crap you read on Valentines Day cards."

The smile disappeared as she spoke and she was now watching Truths with a new and thoughtful expression. "So, you think this is the real deal?" She’d happy for him if it was and do her best to help his weird romance flourish, even if it meant going to the bakery every day and talking very loudly about him in the vicinity of this Sweet Bread lady.

It must be nice, she thought, to be so certain of someone. She saw it with her parents; the way her dad’s looked at each other was so downright corny and full of adoration she couldn't help but roll her eyes, but for her it somehow felt unattainable, as if her heart didn’t quite work that way.

"Okay so, like, just spill everything. I’m not gonna speak ‘til you’re done." She made a ‘zip!’ motion across her mouth.

"That I can believe," he muttered at Shrill's claim of having not been in a proper relationship before. The mention of 'relations', however, made him accidentally squish the ketchup packet he'd been absently fiddling with. Ketchup spurted all over his vermillion face.

"I'm...not quite sure that's the same thing," Truths answered, quickly grabbing a napkin to wipe the condiment off. "But hell if I believe any of that fluff in valentine's cards, either. That's why I don't bother with them." That, and he had also tried and failed to come up with successful ones of his own in the past, which left him quite bitter about them.

But then he noticed Shrill was looking at him funny. "What?" he asked somewhat sharply to hide his embarrassment. Her question caused him to soften and look down at the table again, sighing. "I don't know...I've never pretended to know what that emotion was about. I mean, I know how I'd like to conduct myself if it is that, but how is anyone supposed to know for sure? Not to mention know if - if the other phony feels that way...or thinks they do. Ugh, it's all so very uncertain!"

Hard Truths put his head on the table and covered it with his hooves. "I'm sorry," he apologized, muffled. "I shouldn't bother you with this; it must be a bunch of romantic mush and nauseating notions to you. It's just you're the mare I'm closest to and even if you don't know about or have different concepts of love and relationships, I thought you might at least be able to help me understand mares."

He swallowed, not sure if that was the right thing to say. "Er...not that you're particularly feminine, but...I suppose I kind of imagine you as somewhere in between. You seem more thick-skinned than most, so I find it easier to talk to you without worrying you'd get offended. But I find mares seem to exhibit intelligence of a different kind, like how you understand the possible depths of personality and why one might put on an act for others."

Snorting with a small smile at Shrill's zipper gesture, the stallion took the moment to be grateful at how true a friend the mare was. To be devoted enough to want to listen (and without adding her own input, no less), was more than he could have asked of anyone, least of all her. "Well...I'll spare you the sickening sentimental details, but basically I met Sweet Bread when I was a foal. She's just so hard-working and kind to everyone that you'd never guess how lonely she seemed to be. She sat down to talk to me in the middle of her busy work day - me, a colt she'd just met - and got me all sorts of things she thought I might like when I told her I wasn't fond of sweets."

He sighed heavily, recalling that day. "We got to talking more and more and I found out she'd had 'relations' with other mares before. Two, actually, which had resulted in kids from both. But because they didn't share the same idea of love that she had, both relationships ended with the mares leaving Sweet Bread all alone. She has her kids, I suppose, but she said they're living lives of their own, growing up and meeting others, so they don't have time for her or to help her with her bakery."

Truths shook his head. "Not that she complains; she'd never complain. Yet it's so easy to see that she overworks herself and tries to take too much on, perhaps to forget that she has no one else to rely on. And I just...I haven't been able to stop thinking of her and her situation since that day. How such a lovely unicorn - both outside and inside - could be left so alone. I thought I didn't like sweets, but...Sweet Bread seems to be an exception."

He looked back at Shrill with a wince. "That sounds stupid, doesn't it? Damn it, is this what they mean when they say love makes one stupid? Or am I just going crazy?"

“You are such a prude,” she muttered as his face splattered with ketchup. “One day you’re going to come running to me and I’m going to have to get out a whiteboard and illustrate for you how to please your little lady. We’ll probably have to start with what parts go where.”

Then as promised, Shrill sat in complete silence until he was finished speaking, her expressions doing most of the talking for her. They ranged from amused to a fond to thoughtful to briefly annoyed and then back to a wry amusement.

“You know,” she said finally, “you might want to bother with that Valentine’s Day crap. She’d probably like it. Sounds like the type.”

The waiter chose that moment to arrive with their burgers and Shrill shoved a few chips into her mouth. This Sweet Bread did sound nice. It was a far cry from what Shrill would have pegged as his type. It was also a far cry from anything Shrill could be described as. This was the kind of girl you settled down with, had a family, loved unconditionally and never strayed from. Ugh, how boring.

“And you don’t need to apologize, you know, about asking me about stuff. I know I’m pretty full of it and I’m not really nice or girly or anything but I’m happy to help you. Um, so, I guess, thanks for confiding in me, is what I’m saying. I don’t have many friends wanting to share secrets or ask for help. Only my sis does that." She cleared her throat. "Anyway, so, like love is-“ She shoved some more chips in to hide her brief uncertainty, chewed and swallowed. This was important. This had to be said right. “Love is when you realize that you’re happier when the other person is around rather than being alone. It’s when the best part of your day is when you get to see them.”

The burger was oozing cheese and she swiped some of it up with a chip and proceeded to wave it in the air like a baton.

“It doesn’t sound stupid. It sounds like you really like someone and you don’t know what the hell do to. Ask her out, go have a good time together. Sounds like she’s been around the block before and knows how the relationship game works, so don’t be afraid to let her lead and I guess, like, be honest. That’s your specialty, yeah? So just tell her how you feel. Girls dig that s**t. I mean, think about movies. How many romance movies would have finished in five minutes if the guy just said, ‘hey, I like you’ instead of pissfarting around for ninety minutes? Nearly all of them. Not that I watch those. Much.”

Shrill X ate the chip and stared at her plate, trying to muddle through her own thoughts and feelings. She was great at talking s**t; not so much anything else.

“Now I sound like I’m full of crap.” Shrill declared. “What do I even know about love or real relationships? And you probably are crazy. Actually, I'm pretty sure you are. Okay, I’m eating my burger now before it gets cold.”

And she did just that; picking up the oozing mess and taking a huge bite.

Hard Truths cast Shrill something of a resentful look at her mention of the whiteboard and illustrations, but did not respond otherwise. It was hard to say what that look might have meant, such as if he might have resented the idea that he didn't know about certain parts or that she might have been right about his lack of knowledge in that department after all. Maybe even both.

He grunted in response to the Valentine's Day crap. "You might be right. But I couldn't even if I wanted to. If I tried to do or say something without being genuine, like make up 'sweet nothings', it'll probably end up sounding as insincere as I feel about it and the whole thing would be pointless. Maybe even detrimental, considering I'm supposed to be all about honesty."

Smiling musingly as Shrill ate some chips, he considered how interesting it was that the white, striped mare was observant enough to recognize what kind of phony might like things that she herself didn't care for. Most others likely wouldn't even bother learning anything beyond their own preferences.

"...You're nice in your own way," Truths answered, eyeing his own burger. "A more...genuine way that's true to yourself. I really like that about you." At the mention of her sister, though, he grinned. "The 'sis' that you so obviously adore but try so hard to hide your feelings for?"

Watching her stuff chips into her mouth during her hesitation, he took a chip himself and chewed on it thoughtfully as he listened to Shrill's idea of love. After a minute or two of silence, he nodded in agreement. "That's probably accurate. I mean, I'm not sure how it is for those who love to be around other phonies all the time anyway - probably why those shallow fools keep confusing infatuation with love - but for those of us who usually prefer solitude, that sounds about right." He was about to bite into his burger when another realization struck him. "Wait - how do you know that feeling?"

Truths stared with his mouth hanging open slightly, as if still ready to devour the burger in his hooves. His expression made it clear he gaped for an entirely different reason, though. His mind was going a thousand miles a minute trying to think just how perceptive Shrill could be, trying to assess if it possible to describe a feeling like that so well without actually feeling it for oneself. Perhaps someone else had described it to her like that? But she said no one really talked to her about these things and she had hesitated right before she's said it like she was embarrassed about it or something.

Why would she have hesitated if she was simply relaying something she'd been told and not experienced? And if she'd experienced it, who in Phonyland could she have felt that way about? A mare? A stallion? Several of them? No, she didn't seem the sort to fall for others that easily, even if flings were common for her...had she been talking about her sister, then? Was familial or platonic love the same kind of feeling as romantic love? Did he dare to ask? Would she clam up on him if he did? For now, all he could do was close his mouth and hope for more clues.

"You make it sound so easy," he murmured, thinking about Shrill's suggestion. And yet, she was probably right. The thing about the relationship game being familiar to Sweet Bread made him feel better, but then he remembered it wasn't familiar to him. What if it turned out they didn't have the same idea of love and relationships after all? He couldn't bear to let her be left alone yet again...

The stallion snorted. Shrill's comment about romance movies broke through the seriousness of his thoughts. "Once again, you must be right. Sheesh, I would have come to you sooner if I'd known you were such an expert. Just how much is 'much' to you?" he asked with a sideways glance. Maybe those were where she had gotten that concept of love from and her embarrassment came from the memory of having watched said movies.

"Yes, well...love seems to be an experience akin to wading through loads of s**t anyway, just to find what really matters. But you're starting to worry me." He set down his burger and put a hoof to her forehead as she took a bite of her food. "Are you ill? You're starting to sound like you have a case of lovesickness yourself." Gold eyes gazed at her intently. "What do you know about love and relationships? You can be honest with me, you know."

Ruriska
((UGH I'm so sorry, Shrill is just so precious that Truths' muse kinda balked on a reply and got all nervous. It's always harder for him to respond to those he likes/gets along with because he doesn't want to say the wrong thing and make them change their mind about him. XP Which is silly because he makes such a show of not caring about others' opinions of him...but once he has a true friend, he wants very much to keep them and gets extra sensitive about how he behaves around them. Wants to make sure everything is worded just right, and that takes time and patience that's hard to muster when simply reading the post gets his muse too flustered to formulate a proper response.))

“The thing is,” Shrill X interjected through a mouthful of chips, “when you’re that super duper in love, you’re probably going to want to do all those things. You’re happy, over the moon, all of a sudden the holiday isn’t stupid, it’s an extra chance to show somebody how special you think they are.” She shrugged. “We think it’s dumb now, sure, but when she casually mentions, ‘oh hey Truths, tomorrow is Valentine’s Day wink wink hint hint’ are you really gonna let that pass?”

Shrill X was already feeling embarrassed and she scowled at him, as if to say, ‘you’ve got it wrong, I’m not nice at all’. ”I don’t try and hide nothin’.” She grumbled. It was just easier to skirt around the fact rather than let anyone think she’d gone soft.

She was contemplating the logistics of getting the whole burger in her mouth when he seemed to come to some strange idea that involved staring at her with his mouth open. She flushed deep red and instantly retaliated by throwing a chip at his head. “You tryin’ to catch flies? I don’t know that feeling, I just imagine that’s what it would be like. Ya know? I mean, come on, it’s not too hard to work it out. And I said I don’t know what I’m talking about, so I’ve probably got it all wrong.”

Shrill leaned forward, knowing the blush was still present and wishing it would bugger off. “It is easy. It’s just everyone else who makes it complicated. You’re either in love or you’re not in love.” She didn’t deign to respond to his ‘expert’ comment, just arched an eyebrow at him. There was no way he was going to find out she watched a romance movie every Friday night before her radio show started.

Chewing the big hunk of burger she’d taken, Shrill simply glowered and batted his hoof away. “Mruck aff,” she mumbled around her food. Honestly she felt like she was clutching at straws. Had she ever been in love? She didn’t think so. Not the way she thought it must feel like but somehow that knowledge was there anyway and talking about it made her feel strange.

It would be nice to find somebody that loved you that much. Someone who would challenge their own thoughts and beliefs and ask a crazy girl questions about what love was. Someone to cherish you unconditionally and never want you to be lonely.

Shrill X thought it would be nice but was also absolutely certain that wasn’t her destiny. Instead she’d live a carefree life, brushing past love but never quite embracing it. There would be no big white wedding, no candlelit romance, no desperate declarations of adoration. It was a little disappointing but then again, she'd probably get bored with all that after a while.

Kitomyx
Oh man, I know what you mean. XD Truths is so sweet though. I really think these guys are going to hilarious best friends forever. 8P

"I'd think of something. Just not poems," he muttered in response to her question about Valentine's Day. The stallion sneered, though, when she claimed she didn't try to hide anything. He guessed he knew her feelings on the matter well, having gone out of his own way to keep up his reputation as a rude, grumpy pony. "Well if you don't want to be honest with me, I at least hope you're honest with yourself."

"- Ow!" He picked up the chip she'd thrown at him. "Don't waste food!" Truths scolded, putting the fallen piece along with the trash. "...And that must be some vivid imagination you have. I'm amazed you even contemplate the concept. Though I suppose everyone feels lonely now and then...even with a bunch of random phonies to take home with you." He gave her a sideways look. "Like I said, for someone who 'doesn't know what she's talking about', your ideas are disturbingly accurate."

Refraining (with difficulty) from making some comment about how she was now almost as red as he was (and how strange/adorable it looked since he hadn't realized it was possible to fluster the mare in such a way), he cleared his throat and did his best to avoid looking at her as he continued to listen and finally bit into his burger. He didn't appear to take offense at her batting aside his hoof or her slightly-muffled suggestion, spoken through a full mouth as it was.

"Just being in love or not in love...I don't think it's that clear-cut to phonies who are actually suffering from it," he murmured thoughtfully after swallowing his own mouthful, almost as if speaking to himself. "What was that saying? 'Follow love, and it will flee thee. Flee love, and it will follow thee.'" He shrugged. "Or something like that, anyway. My point is I don't think it's always up to us. Especially since phonies change and their feelings change with them. Someone might think they're in love and not really be, or be certain that they're not - maybe even hate someone - and actually care about them at the same time." He laughed. "I heard it's not possible to truly hate someone without having loved them first. I wonder if that's true."

After a moment of consideration, he reached out a hoof to gently pat Shrill's shoulder. "I hope you..." A pause. "...don't 'stay lonely' forever. You're a fantastic phony and it would be a waste if no one else ever discovered just how great you really are."
