How it all came to be
'Girl'. That was what they called me. Before that I was 'Beauty'. Now.. I call myself Raine, after the humans word for the water that falls from the sky. It seems fitting though I suppose you won't understand until I tell you my story...
Very well.
I was born in the care of a man. Really, he was The Man. A Human. He cared for and looked after me with as much love and attention as you could ever desire. We were happy, me and Him. But he was old, though I did not understand back then what that meant for a human. As I grew bigger, He seemed to grow smaller. He was less energetic when I wished to run and play. He slept more when I wanted to go out and explore. One day He didn't wake up. It took me a while to realise that He had passed on, it was my first experience of death after all. But I stayed by His side. Too long, as it turned out. More men came... these ones were nothing like Him. Nothing like The Man. These men took me with them, bid me fetch and carry for them. And I did... But it was not the same. There was no love, no laughter. And prescious little food. I forgot My Man only slowly... I would pine for Him, curse Him for leaving me. And then weep as I asked for forgivness. Anything to get Him to return to me. But of course He could not.
For many seasons I toiled under the instructions of those other humans. I grew skinny and weak in my depression. Never once realising there was an alternative. That is until I saw my first Pony. One of my own species. He came, galloping free as the wind across the hills, his song called to me, of beating hooves, wind-whipped mane and the scent of far off lands on the breeze. Yet I was terrified. For I had never been without humankind. Had My Man been alive, I doubt I would have left, but He was gone. Long gone. And I felt no loyalty to those other men. Lesser men. But still, I could not leave.
I saw him time and time again. My stallion galloping along the horison. And each time I longed to join him, to be Free. But each time my courage failed me. Then one night a storm blew in all of a sudden, as if furious at something I had done for it seemed to be centered above me no matter how much I ran this way and that in my panic. I remember nothing but darkness split by brilliently painful flashes and the sound of a thousand hooves roiling through the darkness all around me. Then one set of hooves became louder, no longer that muffled earth-shaking rumble but a steady sound that stayed beside me rather than above. Thinking back I recall a warmth at my side, and the little pin pricks of pain along my neck where his mane whipped at me as we ran.
It was he who guided me that night. Who stuck by my side despite my blind panic. He protected me, kept me safe and finally, finally, when I could no longer run, he stood over me throughout that horrible storm. Held me anchored to the earth when all else was ripped away. My saviour, my protector. My Stallion of the Hills.
