A warlock has prepared you with a weapon of your own, brave hunter. You
enter through the thick fog of the maze with nothing but this weapon and
your comrades.

From a distance, you see the silhouettes of limping bodies against the
moonlight.

Designate which member in your team will roll. This can change every
turn, but everyone must post every round in order for you to continue! You do
not need to wait for the GM for dead ends and t-junctions.

You may begin posting now!

10 - A Dead End

Justin hefted his baseball bat over one shoulder. This maze was certainly creepy: the fog, the figures... He shivered and wondered if those, er, limping figures were just other people here. For once, Justin felt rather blaise about his entire situation. He'd watched enough zombie movies - this could be a piece of cake right?

"Uh... I guess we just start walking, right?" He turned to face his companions, walking backwards into the maze. Justin resisted the urge to reach out and grab both of their hands in some sort of cartoonish display of nerves. So he walked and back straight up into a dead end.

"Ow..." Several leaves detached and made their home in his dark hair.

Cesc wasn't entirely sure why he'd signed up to be a part of this. In some strange way, it seemed fitting -- a month or two after his birth, he'd been part of this self-same hedge maze, getting pooped on by birds and dodging axes and getting caught in blizzards and viewing a unicorn. Now, here he was, a month or two after his growth, back in the maze.

He'd left his cane behind, worried about damaging the item in the maze. But as he walked in, something else formed in his hand -- a large, curved sword, a scimitar. He curled his fingers around it, the weight reassuring in his hand. He pointed it toward the ground. He had no sheath, and no desire to cut either of his companions.

The landscape was different from the last time he'd seen it. No flowers, no healthy green shrubs -- brambles and fog and, this time, he could see other figures.

... other guardians? Cesc narrowed his eyes.

No...

He was the only Raevan in his group. He smiled at the other two men. He hoped, somehow, that this scenery would belie its ease, the opposite of the other trek he'd taken in this maze. He knew them, just barely, and didn't want them to have to deal with swinging axes. Or living, strangling vines. Or poop.

But then, they all had weapons, so...

"I guess that's the only thing we can -- oh!" Cesc held out a hand as the fog fluttered around Justin and a hedge wall appeared. He broke into a smile, floating forward and plucking out a leaf from the man's hair. "It's alright, last time I was here, we ran straight into the wall first, too."

Justin had signed up on a whim - one he was sure he would regret later. Maybe. He could hear groaning in the mist. He idly swung his baseball bat and peered around. His companions - Ian and Cesc - had some sort of metal thing and a scimitar, respectively. His own bat was plain, wooden, no nails, nothing. Justin's hadn't ever even played baseball. He opened his mouth to point out the obviously cooler nature of Cesc's weapon but stooped himself.

"You came here before? Was it-" He gestured widely, almost clipping himself in the arm with his bat. "-like this?" Frankly, Justin had no idea what to except and, now that he thought of it, it made him more than a little uneasy. Nonetheless, he returned Cesc's smile and gave an even broader one to Ian. The redhead was fast becoming one of Justin's friends.

As soon as he stepped into the maze, Ian regretted his decision to sign up. He was terrible with scary things, even just darkness, so what had possibly convinced him that this was a good idea? He didn't know, but he felt very stupid and very anxious.

He was glad, though, that he wasn't alone. Justin and Cesc were here, armed as well, though likely much more capable than he. Hazel-green eyes stared down at the fire poker in his hand, heavy, dark iron with a nasty point and flare on one end. He was worried he might toss it when swinging it, but... Maybe it wouldn't come to that.

His attention was drawn away when Justin and Cesc started talking, and he managed an anxious little laugh when Justin ran smack into a wall of the hedge maze. This was all too reminiscent of a beloved movie, and knowing that only made him even more hesitant. "Last time? You mean there was another hedge maze?" The thought that Cesc might know what he was doing was comforting, but not by much. He glanced around and took a breath, his hand squeezing around the iron in his hand. "So which way now?" As he glanced though the fog, Ian could make out some strange shapes moving in the distance. The distinct limp and wobbling gate were enough to give him pause, jaw tightening. Were those...no, they couldn't be.

Cesc smiled at the other two men, making an about-face and starting back down the line. They had only encountered one junction so far, so there wasn't too much of a decision on where to turn. He floated down, matching his pace to the others.

"I was here before," said Cesc. His tone, instead of being reassuring, was faintly apologetic. "It was not like this -- it was during a garden party, with a lot of blooming flowers and the like. But, ah... it was still a little dangerous then. Not that we were actually given weapons last time..."

The ground beneath you splinters and cracks. With the force of an
earthquake-- can no one else feel this?-- an earthen giant knocks you off of
your feet and drags itself to the surface from the soil below.

Though perhaps smaller than most giants described in the Grecian myths,
it easily takes up two or three wide lanes of the labyrinth and pulls apart
the roots of the hedge maze with every movement. It bellows in its
thunderous voice, and clumsily raises a foot towards you.

1. Roll 1D20 to attack on the monster! Once you roll, you must wait for
your other teammates to attack AND the monster to attack before
rolling again!
2. After everyone has attacked, The monster will generate RNG 1-4 to
determine its target!
3. This monster will generate RNG1-25 damage at its selected target!
4. Rinse and repeat until the monster is dead!
5. If something goes wrong and your team member 'dies,' they are booted
from the maze-- but something tells you that there's a benevolent spirit
watching you traverse this labyrinth...

GO, GO, GO! ATTACK!

Almost immediately, Cesc felt as though his words were a jinx. No sooner had he finished speaking then a giant appeared out of what seemed like nowhere, its footsteps ripping apart the landscape. Immediately, the Sigel's wings flared, the feathers becoming sharp and bright and extending suddenly much wider than their previous length. His fingers tightened around the scimitar, and his eyes went bright and true gold, his heart pumping in his chest.

"GET TO SAFETY! RUN!" Cesc's low lilt became rough and loud as he darted upward, taking flight. He had no blessed idea how to use a sword other than the general 'pointy-end-goes-in-enemy' philosophy, but he circled around the giant and carved a deep slice where he assumed the creature's Achilles tendon was.

Was it effective? It looked gruesome, at the least. Thoughts of the jungle bubbled in the back of Rhedefre's mind.

Ian had been about to ask more about Cesc's previous experience with the maze, but his voice was cut off by the crackling of earth and the thunderous step of something...very large. Ian looked up as they rounded the corner to see the giant, or at least what he assumed to be a giant, rising up out of the ground beneath the maze and blocking their path. Ian's mouth dropped open and he shrunk back a little, hand clenching tight around his iron. It was so small comparatively, barely two feet in length; how was he supposed to do anything with it?! He could feel his entire body shaking, and he glanced fearfully toward Justin, realizing that Cesc was gone. He panicked, froze, his heart seizing in his chest.

He blinked when Cesc yelled at them to run, locating him closer to the giant now, but didn't obey. "N-no! We can't just leave you!" Although every fiber of his being told him to run, Ian lunged forward and nearly tripped as he threw the iron into the air toward the giant's face. He couldn't do much on the ground, after all, but as long as the weapon landed nearby... Maybe he could just keep doing this? He preferred not to think of what would happen if the iron ricocheted and landed somewhere that he couldn't get to.

Justin tumbled dramatically to the ground as a giant rose from the soil beneath them. It was utterly alien and more than a bit frightening. but, well... It looked like something out of a video game. Nothing as specific as a giant tree from Suikoden or one of the colossi from SotC, sadly. Suddenly, it began to slowly stomp its way towards them.

"Well, s**t." Cesc went in low, Ian high - after a fashion. Justin watched the fire poker bounce off of the giant face. With an angry snarl, its hand swept out, tearing up a nearby hedge. Justin ran forward, ducking under one uplifted foot to strike at the back of the other. His baseball bat really wasn't the best weapon for this, he thought sourly. Jumping back, he tripped over something. Oh, that damn poker. Snatching it, he looked around for Ian. Luckily, that bright head of hair was visible even in the misty gloom.

"I don't think I signed up for this bit," he mumbled before calling out. "Ian, come get your metal stick! Does anybody know if a giant has weak spots?" Although he was more than a little unnerved, this was honestly just as fascinating as he could've hoped it to be - just like a video game!
