Shylla leaned against the rocky walls of Evmeth's ledge, struggling to stay in her head for a few moments longer. Her dragon bugled at the walls of High Reaches again, her hide glimmering with a healthy sheen and violet in her eyes, wings spread and ready to take flight. It was a reassuring sight to see, after all the sickness and injury that had been so rampant in recent months. Still, it was far too early to be celebrating just yet, and as Shylla looked up she began to see the stirrings of suitors in the weyrs above. They might croon songs of love for Evmeth, but to Shylla they were all teeth and wings and talons, and their riders were soldiers with swords. They were daggers wrapped in silk sheathes for the sake of a romance, and Shylla needed to make sure that she was as safe in the ground while Evmeth was safe in the air.

"Miss?" squeaked the voice of her new squire, a little thing from the Sofiane camps who had recently been searched. The child rubbed at their eyes, their oversized frock worn inside-out, but they had at least made the effort to be awake for their rider, which was most of the battle. Shylla gave Evmeth one last fleeting look, then turned to step inside, smiling weakly at the little squire. It would not do to spook the child with her worries.

"Good timing," she praised, blinking as she felt Evmeth bugle in the background again. "I need you to do something important for me, okay?"

At once the child hopped to attention, eyes wide and alert. "Yes'm!"

Shylla smiled warmly, squeezing the child's hand. "I need you to seek out S'ol. He's a rider of 4-2's wing, the drudges can show you where his weyr is. If you can find him, bring him here. If you can't, find Venk or Bereck, okay?"

The squire blanched, but ultimately nodded, and Shylla let the child speed off with a somber nod. She waited just long enough to see her door close, and then succumbed to the overwhelming sensations tugging at her mind.

I'm with you, Heart, she spoke to Evmeth, her vision beginning to blur. Fly hard, and fly fast.

---

After her third bugle, Evmeth began to see shapes moving in the light of the rising sun, and once her gaze settled on suitors she began to trill excitedly, pawing at the ground beneath her. It had worked, they were waking up for her, at her beck and call. She waited only to see the first stretch of a pair of wings, and then she bolted, taking to the air with a long gallop. As she gained altitude, she began to glow steadily brighter, a star in the early morning sky that longed to be caught.

Evmeth called, turning her head back towards her suitors as she began to pick up momentum. Her voice crackled with exuberant motes of light, almost like laughter.

[Kyoth rolls number one (-1, brown), Pellinorth rolls number two (-1, bronze time dragon)]

Pellinorth trumpeted, surged to the edge of the ledge... and then fell off as he tripped over his own feet, with a whoop of panic. This, unfortunately, mirrored the way in which his rider had just fallen out of the hammock (getting tangled up in it in the process in an incredibly undignified manner). Though he was up and moving, the bronze nearly hit the ground before managing to twist around and pull himself up, wings beating hard.

<...whoops>

Kyoth, meanwhile, was just - well, uninterested was not the right word, for he was definitely interested. Taking his time sounded about right, because that was all Kyoth ever did. His rider almost fell out of her bed, wrapping bedsheets about her as she stumbled to the edge of his ledge, one hand over her eyes to see how he went - the answer was slowly - and then back inside to wriggle into hose and tunic, and to find her friends.

[Malcarreth rolls #1 at -2, Pycath rolls #2 at -1]

[10 - 2 = 8. 8 + 5 = 13

Malcarreth had dozed fitfully through the night but awoken somewhat before dawn unable to fall asleep again. Being an essentially sensible dragon he used the time to limber up and watch Evmeth's ledge intently. So it was that when she sprung upon the beasts in the pens he was ready, poised to answer her call when it came.

As the gold took to the air the sleek blue sprang from his ledge, shooting after her like an arrow loosed from a bow. he hummed, his smoky voice coiling softly towards the rising gold.

[5 - 1 = 4. 4 + 5 = 9]

As the first wave of males shot into the sky Pycath watched, scoping out the competition and which parts of it he might like to remove. Without any immediate duds on his radar the sleek brown launched off his ledge with powerful beats of his wings. He might have scarified the chance at an early lead but he intended to play the long game here and besides, if you were at the front you couldn't see who else was around.

[NPC Absoth / NPC Morth]

[2]

The enormous, incongruously skinny bronze shape that was Absoth - wingleader of 3rd-1 - bugled a greeting to the rising gold and jumped into the air to give chase.

O'ail sat in her weyr with her chin on her hand and watched her dragon fly away. She kind of missed the days when she could just go out there and take part but these days she had to think about politics, and as such she was not alone in her weyr; a collection of her supporters stood by the door and out on the ledge, ready to combat anyone who thought they'd take her out of the running.
______________

[10]

Morth took but a moment to touch bases with his supporters before springing into the air, fixing his eyes firmly on the distant shape of Evemth. He maintained a cursory awareness of the other males - and females - giving chase but he had people to deal with them, all he had to do was win over the gold.

Ko'ren sat in his weyr with his fingers steepled , keeping his mind as distant from his dragon's as he could for now. For now he needed to focus, this was a senior flight and he had no doubt that there was trouble to come.

[Kelilayth (bronze time dragon -1) 9]

Kelilayth had been a little slow to hear the gold's call but the third bugle finally did it. His head snapped up to the morning sky and he saw the bright spot that must be Evmeth. He told his before looking once to his clutchmate and launching himself into the air. <"Be careful Kel. You may be a bronze but their bronzes are bigger. Please be safe.."> It worried her that he was going to try to fly with all the current day larger dragons. Vesin snuggled closer to her sister.

[Calanoth (Brown -1) 11] [Sanuyeth (Green -3) 8]

This wasn't the first time Calanoth had woken Z'fer at the summons of some female or another. This on the other hand was the first time he'd been present for the flight of a new Sr. Queen. The results of which considering current circumstances would undoubtedly see two entirely new Weyrleaders in the coming days. He was still too young for the position himself, but a good showing here could see him potentially promoted. Not to mention his dragon had suffered from the plague and survived. He was of a good strong Istan bloodline that would do well for the sickly beasts of High Reaches. Z'fer gave a brief moment of thought to his immediate actions before throwing on a pair of pants and tugging his boots in place and leaving his weyr.

Calanoth thrummed as he surged from his ledge, wings catching him confidently as he rose into the air after Evmeth. He pumped his pale wings, seeking for an early lead. I will gladly take to the skies led by your shining light!

(Calanoth isn't a bronze. I fixed that. Herp)

~...~

Sanuyeth started, her whole body stiffening in it's curled position and a flash of red peeking through cracked lids. Fardling golds. Dimglowed self important wherries who don't care if you had a late mission or training in the morning. The young green shifted, uncoiling and flaring her wings in the shadows of her weyr as her tail lashed angrily behind her. Tense muscles complained at the rough treatment even as her bulky form stalked to her weyr ledge. She growled, arching her neck up to watch the drooling males practically throwing themselves off their own ledges to get to Evmeth. Couldn't have picked a decent hour huh? Well fine. You want a chase? I'll give you a chase! Sanuyeth launched herself into the sky.

Ja'line sat up in her bed in confusion. Was Sanuyeth rising? She'd seen none of the signs she'd been told to look out for but judging from the feeling in the air and the strange calls she couldn't imagine it was anything else. Clad only in a bedshirt, Ja'line crossed the cold stone floor and peered out of her open weyr into the air. Sanu what the SHELLS are you doing?!

S'ol was awoken by the commotion just before the bell in the corner tinkled, indicating that somebody down below wanted his attention. S'ol - who suspected he knew who it was - flailed quickly into his clothing and unfurled the rope ladder that would allow him to climb down to a ledge with an entrance to the lower caverns. Going via Zaqueth would have been faster by Zaqueth had already taken to the air not to chase, but to defend should anyone try anything untoward.

Taking rather less care than he perhaps should have S'ol arrived at the bottom of the ladder and met the child who he recognized as Shylla's squire. With all the dragons in the air he hardly needed her message but he thanked her for it anyway and took off for his friend's weyr at a dead run.

Bereck woke up at the desk in his quarters. Alina was asleep across from him in her own chair, face down on her papers and glasses askew. The healer rubbed his face as he tried to work out what had roused him so suddenly and then groaned as he felt Berath poking at his mind and drawing his attention to the scene outside. Here they went again then. Muttering under his breath the healer heaved himself to his feet and made an attempt to tidy himself before moving around the desk to give the stirring Alina a kiss on the cheek. "We really must stop falling asleep here. Got to go, some idiots are about to fight over sex and power. Again." And he would have to clean up the aftermath. Tch!

Tarazeth observed, though her tone? Her tone was outright gleeful.

are the dirty tricks wing> M’ere shot back - and she was not exaggerating. She liked O’ail, she was definitely part of her campaign team, and quietly shaffing over those who might think that a woman couldn’t win - or be weyrleader - was icing on the cake. The green rider was up by the star stones, where she could get the best view. She was very much aware of her squishiness, and would prefer to be somewhere that didn’t make her a target - even by accident. She’d dressed up in some of her nicest clothes for the occasion, and had bundled her fur cloak about her against the cold of the morning. She had seen Pycath take off, so perhaps Re’ka would be receptive to visitors…? And again, it was hard to say how she’d take it. Perhaps she should find friends and go in force. She pushed that to the back of her mind as she peered down into the bowl, swinging her legs back and forth over the edge.

She’d seen Evmeth beginning to glow last night, and had cheerfully done as the Wingleader commanded - or, well, no. If it was found out (and she didn’t expect to be found out), O’ail knew nothing about it. Plausible deniability! That was the key. Thus, any rider who’d been up pre-dawn (and they should have been! Running and suchlike!) had found their porridge spiked with sleeping drugs. Probably not enough to knock any of them out, but definitely enough to interfere with their performance today.

She did a good job, yep.

[totally optional lulz - if your character ate the porridge, roll a D8 for a penalty to all rolls throughout the flight]

(First dice Banneth - 1 time rider bronze / Second dice Hazmath - 2 blue)

Banneth smoothly took flight from his ledge, as narrow as it was and twisted in the air, surging up and over to get air and to catch up with the shimmering golden pale queen. Not his queen, but still beautiful and he could do no less then give her his all in this chase. He called out, voice refreshing like the first crisp snow and the crisp scent of pine.

Ra’fe woke smoothly, leaving his hamlock and stretched fluidly before padding to the edge of their weyr looking out. He caught a glimpse of Ban’s wings as the bronze winged out of sight and smiled slyly. His weyr, small, out of the way, and not wanted, was going to be much easier to defend. He doubt that most of the weyr knew who dwelled in which when it came down to the time riders. But… he would be ready if needed.

Ban's total - 14
---
Hazmath woke in a flair of wings and excitement, eyes whirling purple and voice bubbling over like a giggling broke. He called, jumping out and into the air, wings flapping as he flew after the queen. He sang out.

B’ren on the other hand, jerked out of his sleep and onto the floor with a ow and omg what just happened? ‘Haz?’ He questioned tiredly.

The blue called back.

Bronze Tiaeth- Time Dragon - Modifier= -1

Vosin woke to the call. She was tempted to pull the covers back over her head, but the thrill drew her back out. Tiaeth! Wake up you silly boy. There's a gold who needs your charms. The woman hecked the bronze.

His rider's voice and finally his clutchmate leaving woke the bronze. Tiaeth yawned and peered around with sleep in his eyes? Hu what? Oh Flight! Coming! He scrambled out of the large weyr and took off after Kel.

Lead me on Evmeth. The sun will rise to light our path. Fly well. Maybe not very eloquent or flirty, but he'd just woken up! The bronze beat his wings slowly to warm them up before really trying.

Evmeth trilled her amusement as Pellinorth stumbled, but the emotions she sent him were warm, reassuring. Likewise, she sent what amounted to a small nudge Kyoth's way--it wasn't unfriendly by any means, but hadn't he heard her call? It was time to rise and shine!

Malcarreth,> she teased to the normally-crotchety blue, climbing ever higher. (+1 to your next roll!)

Pycath?> Evmeth crooned to the brown, twisting her neck in the start of a slow but well-practiced roll.

Evmeth beamed at Absoth's bugle, sharpening the angle of her roll to whip out of it with a snap. chided the pale gold, but it was clear in her tone that she was pleased nonetheless. (+1 to your next roll!)

And there was Morth, lurking in the background like he always did. But he didn't have the weyrleader's shadow to hide behind any longer, so why wouldn't he shine?

And a newcomer, how curious, another of the time riders rising to give chase. Evmeth chirped at Kelilayth, urging him closer so she could get a look at his curious hide.

Calanoth, you are on the right path,>
she replied to the chivalrous brown, crooning in his direction. With a tilt of her glittering wings, she began a wide turn, giving herself a generous view of the suitors. (+1 to your next roll!)

If there was vitriol in Sanuyeth's voice, Evmeth hadn't seemed to catch on, trilling curiously towards the newly-minted wingrider.

Banneth,>she hummed, recognizing his presence with an approving nod. (+1 to your next roll!)

The queen giggled at Hazmath, her mind rolling playfully in the song of his words. (+1 to your next roll!)

Evmeth responded warmly to Tiaeth, comparing the glint of his hide to another of the suitors. Clutchmates, perhaps? But how was she to tell them apart?

With all her suitors in attendance, Evmeth let out a gleeful roar, stroking her wings to get altitude. After greeting each individually, she addressed them as a group;

((For the next roll, color modifiers are reversed! Greens have a static zero, Blues a -1, Browns a -2, and Bronzes a -3. In addition, Time Riders get a +1 bonus for being so trim! Don't worry if this penalty seems big, no one can roll lower than a zero!))

---

Shylla leaned back against her bed, marvelling at the display of suitors. It felt like there was an entire wing after her girl! She bit her lip at Absoth's smooth words, but was quick to shove any personal feelings aside--O'ail had sided with G'vian, after all, and this was a grab at power, not some puppy love in the creche. As Evmeth began to turn, so too did Shylla wobble, her head light but her eyelids heavy. Had her last flights been so...exhausting? Covering her mouth as she yawned, she shook her head, trying to focus. She needed to keep alert, at least until S'ol arrived.

[Calanoth (Brown -2+1) 14] [Sanuyeth (Green -0) 10]

Calanoth thrummed with pleasure at her personal attentions. He tilted his wings, following her arch and exposing the pale hide of his back. From above, he was near as bright as her but lacking in that distinctive gleam that would mark him as anything but what he was. It was when viewed from below that his hide swirled with color, darkening to a rich brown near black.

The brown dragon crooned as their easy direction changed again and she called for grace. Long deep thrusts of his wings pushed him skyward, his great bulk lifting with relative ease, if not speed, after her. I hope to forever remain so, lovely Evmeth!

Below, Z'fer fought to maintain some semblance of control as he stumbled haphazardly towards the weyr of another rider he knew that would be open to this early mornings change of plans. It was difficult though as Calanoth pulled insistently on his mind. He should have been more prepared.

~...~

Sanuyeth snorted, she didn't strain herself trying to out fly the larger dragons, but neither did she back off. No. She had a score to settle and she didn't do anything halfway. Wherryhead. Sanuyeth added privately to Ja'line.

Don't you do anything stupid Sanuyeth! I ain't interested in losing our position in Second for your grouchy butt! Her rider retorted, having already retreated back to the warmth of her bedfurs, grateful that it was only the general broadcast she was getting rather than the full brunt of the emotions the other riders must be feeling at this moment. Sanuyeth hadn't a scrap of interest in the gold, romantic or otherwise, nor for any of the males flying her though there was an extra snort and feeling of extreme sarcasm as Ja'line got an image of Hazmath staring lustfully after Evmeth. Oh faranth she hoped her classmate had thought to close his door...as a matter of fact Ja'line jumped up quickly to barricade her own. Not interested in any visitors tonight.

Bronze Tiaeth- Time Dragon - Modifier= -3 (+1) = -2

The small bronze beat his way up into the air. These big dragons sure could fly fast! His smaller wings worked double time trying to keep the pace. Maybe slow and steady? he asked Vosin with a chuckle.

Go your own pace Tiaeth, but don't blame me when I mock you about being back there with the green. His rider teased back from the safety of her warm covers.

Pah! he replied humorously as he noticed the green also flying. It was strange and funny! To Sanuyeth he asked, Will you take pity after the flight on a poor old boy? He crooned a laugh at the joke on his age.

Tiaeth arched his neck and crooned to the gold at her sweet words. I cannot resist to follow such a beautiful lady. Ah introductions! How rude of me not to consider that. I am Tiaeth sweet one. May I ask the favor of your name as well?

I would be honored to show my grace to you as you ask so nicely. The bronze started a spiral, tilting himself as far on his side as he could go and spinning tighter and tighter. After a few moments he pulled out and shook his head. Oh dear that made me dizzy ahah!

Bronze Kelilayth | Time Dragon | modifier = -2 (this round)
@9 →9 OTL

Kelilayth thrumed with pleasure as the gold noticed him. He was happy to see his brother join them and even surpass him. His wings were having to beat quite quickly to even keep pace. While he wanted please the queen and be graceful, he saw Tiaeth ahead of him do a magnificent spiral before looking rather dizzy at the end. He said to Tiaeth before turning his attention back to the queen. He said rather elegantly. He wanted to make sure he at least stayed in the flight as long as his brother. Keli worked on slowing his wing beats but putting more power behind him to make him look like he was effortlessly gliding. <"At the back of the pack Keli? And laying it on thick I see."> Vesin almost chided her whimsical dragon but knew it was just his nature.

[Sanuyeth (Green -0) 10]

Sanuyeth shot Tiaeth a withering glare, her mental voice frosty. And here I thought wisdom came with age but apparently you can't outgrow dumb. The bronze was one of the dragons from the past, that much was obvious even without his terrible joke. Sanuyeth made it a personal, if secondary, goal to out fly him and the other tiny bronze.
