In the hour before sunrise, when the candlewax runs low and most sensible folks are in their bedrolls, the normal bustle of High Reaches lulls to a crawl, languishing in the dull darkness of the caves. Here and there, a drudge moves through the caverns on some early morning mission, but mostly the weyr is silent, save for the grumbling of the walls. Outside, the night is crisp and dewey, the smell of fresh-grown grass permeating the air when not overwhelmed by the stench of the bloated Sofiane camp. The loyal followers slept the same as weyrfolk, perhaps even a bit more soundly now that the winter chill was out of their bones.
Awake or not, none of them would know to look for the massive silhouette, colored to match the lightening sky.
The stately gold glided slowly over the camp and past it, descending over the cattle pens. She took her first kill in silence, but the resonant thud of her landing caused the rest of the herd to scatter, a chorus of panicked bleats ringing in the spring air.
You must blood them only, my Heart, remember. Shylla's body stood at the edge of Evmeth's perch, but her eyes were with the gold, her teeth sinking in to warm flesh that splattered and speckled her hide. Shaking her head, she found herself back in her skin, looking out at her dragon below with a steady gaze. Evmeth drained the first, then struck the second beast with utter voracity, pinning it down and tearing through the neck to the blood underneath. A nasty mess, and a wasteful one, but it was nevertheless important. A mother-to-be needed her nutrition.
The first tendrils of sunlight began to peak over the horizon just as Evmeth finished the last of her meal, raising her bloody maw to look back at High Reaches with swirls of lavender in her eyes. With one inhale she filled the bellows of her lungs, and then with a flare of her marbled wings she let out a trumpeting roar that every dragon and rider would feel in their bones.
Evmeth pealed, her voice as resonant and warm as the radiant dawn.

Welcome to Dragonbraved's First Flight, featuring the newly-appointed Senior Gold Evmeth! Dragons of all colors will be competing for a chance to father the next clutch, as well as a chance for their riders to become a contender for the new Weyrleader of High Reaches! We'll be starting this event Monday, November 2nd, but before we open up the main thread we'd like to give people a quick opportunity to read over the mechanics, create characters, and ask questions! Be sure to read all of the information in this thread, and if you'd like to participate, please fill out a form below!

Rules
- First and foremost, have fun. This Flight has no predetermined winner, and it's open to all adult male dragons in the weyr. If you would like to create a new character to participate in the flight, you may do so in the Application Thread, (provided they are not bronzeriders) (Wasn't sure if we had too many bronzes running around already?).
- Secondly, remember to have tact while roleplaying this delicate situation. A Gold flight causes stirrings across the entire weyr, and it's all well and good to hint at these feelings, but if anything is going to veer beyond PG-13, it needs to fade to black.
- Everyone is welcome to roleplay as many competitors as they feel comfortable juggling! Keep in mind, however, that as judges we will be awarding for quality of writing over sheer quantity, and that more entrants does not necessarily give you higher chances of winning.
- Spectators are also welcome to join in and comment! Nonparticipants are going to be in great need to care for the participating riders, after all!
- Please no tweaking the dice! Each dragon will be allowed to roll once per round as a bonus (though they are encouraged to post multiple times and interact with the other competitors!) If you forget to make your dice roll, DO NOT DELETE YOUR POST, as it will be considered cheating! Instead, make a second post for your dice roll and add accordingly. For players with multiple characters, roll multiple dice and assign the results in alphabetical order.
- You may enter the Flight once it has begun, but you may NOT enter without first posting a form below!
- Keep in mind that winning the senior gold flight does not equate to winning the title of weyrleader! The rider of the winning dragon will certainly have more political clout, given their recent fortune, but determination of the weyrleader will be decided by election at a later date.
- If you have any questions about the event in particular, please direct them to AMItotic. General shop questions go to Con and Tawny as per usual. <3

Flight Mechanics This flight has no predetermined winner, and therefore is a contest of two parts; one part roleplay contest, one part dice game. Each contestant starts out at '0' in the chase to catch Evmeth. Each Evmeth post counts as the start of a new round, and once per round, each player may roll a single d10, with modifiers as follows:
Bronze: No Modifier Brown: -1 to each roll Blue: -2 to each roll Green: -3 to each roll Time Dragon (Regardless of color): -1 to each roll (This stacks with any of the other penalties)
So a Brown Time Dragon would have a cumulative penalty of -2 every roll.
In addition, a dragon may choose to sabotage another suitor's chances instead of advancing their own. In that case, instead of rolling a d10, the player may roll a d8 once a round, and apply that as a negative to a single target's score! This could come in the form of some shoving or squabbling in the air, or perhaps some distraction on the ground, but once you choose your target, there's no take-backsies, and there's no switching to advancing yourself, so choose carefully who you intend to take down! Just to reiterate, you may roll either a d10 to advance OR a d8 to sabotage, NOT both.
The goal is to reach 100 points, at which point the dragon may 'beseech the queen' for permission to mate with her and end the flight. However, golds can be fickle things, and may snub the first to catch her in favor of a runner-up who better catches her fancy! In addition to dice rolls, bonus points will be awarded at the end of every round for particularly spectacular roleplay, or for just finding the right buttons to push. Likewise, a dragon can actually accumulate penalties to his score if he does something particularly distasteful, and should he commit the offense thrice, he will be shunned by Evmeth and removed from the queen.
For now, here are some handy pointers to make sure that your score is as good as it could be: - ALL participants who fill out the pre-Flight prompt in full will receive 5 points at start! Nifty, right? - Evmeth loves comfort and lighthearted play, but she's not a fan of overly aggressive displays. Keep that in mind when trying to woo this anxious gold. - Flattery is nice, but it will only get you so far. To really get in the queen's good graces, you can't afford to be a one-trick runnerbeast. - It's to be expected in terms of flight etiquette, but under no circumstances should any other gold be mentioned. This is her flight and hers alone.
the tl;dr handy guide to flight rolls When making your RP post, you may once per round choose to: 1.) Roll a d10 to advance and move towards the queen, OR 2.) Roll a d8 to sabotage the efforts of another suitor. Rounds will typically last around 24 hours, or until all registered participants have posted at least once. At the end of the round, additional points will be rewarded for spectacular roleplay or for meeting certain criteria, and each dragon's total will be tallied. No dragon may roll more than once in a single round, and no dragon may avoid sabotage if targeted. It's worth making clear that each roll should be accompanied by some amount of RP response, even if its only a few sentences! It's perfectly alright to roll first and write in a response after the fact, but this is just as much an RP contest as it is a dice contest! For the purposes of distributing points, no points will be awarded for a roll without an accompanying response if your post is empty by the end of the round. Good luck and have fun!

The Form
If you'd like your dragon to participate, please fill out the form below! Dragons of any color can take wing, but keep in mind that because this is a mating flight, Evmeth will be choosing a male dragon as her partner in the end. Signing up for the Flight means that you plan on participating in the actual event, which begins November 2nd and ends when a mate is chosen. Rounds will last approximately one day, though can vary based on participation!
Username: Rider: (Please include a link to their profile or applicable journal) Age: Wing: (Include rank or special distinction, if applicable) Brief Description: (1-2 sentence summation of your rider)
Dragon: Color: Brief Description: (1-2 sentence summation of your dragon)
Prompt Response: (Optional, but it earns you some brownie points! You only get credit for one response, but feel free to respond to both if you'd like.)
What makes your dragon take wing in this flight? Is he vying for the lofty position of Weyrleader? Does he want to father the next generation of wingriders? Is he just bored? Give us a little insight into your dragon's agenda (or lack of one).

What is your rider/dragon pair's relationship with the goldriders of the weyr? Have they interacted greatly, or only in passing? Do they think goldriders in general should take more responsibility in the weyr, or step down as the last vestige of archaic practices? If you'd like, you can propose a little backstory with your pair and Shylla/Evmeth, as long as it's fairly vague and they were never best friends/worst enemies/true loves, etc etc.
Username: Shaddaling Rider: Ra’fe Link to approved appAge: 33 Wing: N/A – used to ride 1st Brief Description: Ra’fe is a small solider with a big heart. A rational, calm soul, Ra’fe main drive at the moment is to keep the time riders safe and to prove that even tiny dragons have a place. Dragon: Banneth Color: Bronze – Time Rider Brief Description: A rather dull color and small bromze, Banneth is a warm hearted polite knight. Honorable, brave, and built for speed this bronze is proud to attend the flight. Prompt Response: Prompt One Banneth wants to prove that just because he is a small bronze, it doesn’t mean he can’t do great things. He is striving to show that he worthy of a spot in the first wing, and if he does catch Evmeth, well, he gets to prove that his clutch is just as good as any of the larger dragons. He is rather certain, considering the time period that his rider is not going to end up as Weyrleader. Though it could be good for him. Prompt Two They are close to Sereth and Nersha, though if they remain so is up for debate. Username:Shaddaling Rider:Br’en Link Age: 20 Wing: 4th wing / 4-2 Brief Description: Coppertopped, just graduated into a wing and a bit of a magpie, Br’en is sweet, observant, and generally social. He certainly has a romantic streak and prone to daydreams. Dragon:Hazmath Color:Blue Brief Description: Silly, cheerfully, and bubbly emotions make up this average sized pale blue. He has plenty of enthusiasm and energy to spare and while not the most intelligent, is certainly sweet. Prompt Response: (Optional, but it earns you some brownie points! You only get credit for one response, but feel free to respond to both if you'd like.) Prompt One Hazmath wants to enjoy his first flight! He probably won’t catch her, but he certainly wants to try, and show off a bit. He hasn’t at all thought about fathering a clutch or being weyrleader. He just really wants to have a good time and maybe show how fast he is. Prompt Two They have certainly seen them, but they haven’t truly been close to any gold or their riders but Venk and Hiraeth I ACKNOWLEDGE BY SIGNING UP THAT I PLAN ON PARTICIPATING IN THIS EVENT AND ACCEPT THE POTENTIAL IC CONSEQUENCES THEREOF.

Username: Concinnity Blaise Rider: R'soua Age: Eighteen Wing: 4-2 Brief Description: Idealistic and arrogant teenager who thinks she’s smarter then everyone else. She’s often right. Generally a decent person, very self confident, big and strong.
Dragon: Kyoth Color: Brown Brief Description: A giant cat. Extremely chilled out most of the time, in any given flight for the fun of it, not because he thinks he'll win. Probably just as well, as he manoeuvres like a tank with wings strapped to it.
Prompt Response: (Optional, but it earns you some brownie points! You only get credit for one response, but feel free to respond to both if you'd like.) Prompt One What makes your dragon take wing in this flight? Is he vying for the lofty position of Weyrleader? Does he want to father the next generation of wingriders? Is he just bored? Give us a little insight into your dragon's agenda (or lack of one). “I’m not sure this is a good idea” R’soua said, their roles reversed for once - it was usually Kyoth who hung back, talking of consequences and what he could see about their coming failures.
Kyoth said, the young brown leaning into the touch of his rider’s hands as she worked her hands over his sensitive eye ridges to their mutual pleasure.
“How so?” Where possible, she preferred to speak aloud to her dragon - even if sometimes it was a little slower.
The brown blinked his blue eyes lazily. are good enough to win her ->
“I’m rubbing off on you”
<- yes. We will show that you and I deserve a high rank, we will use it>
“Alright”
“I said alright. But… we’re going to be careful” R’soua said, her mouth a hard line. Accidents happened, in flights. It was all fun and games until someone lost an eye. “It gets heavy, you drop out. I don’t care how beautiful she is, how much you love her in the moment, you drop out”
Kyoth said, and R’soua could swear he was rolling his eyes. She could feel him sorting through her memories
“That’s water” she slapped the side of his head amiably, straightening up from her crouch. “Not some big bronze’s claws”
Kyoth rolled over, showing his claws, for all the world like a feline begging for his belly to be stroked, wriggling his back against the rock to hit a particularly bad itch.

Username: Dizzy_Kat Rider: Z'fer JournalAge: 30 Wing: Second Brief Description: Overwhelmingly confidant, competitive, and pretty positive that he is the hero of this entire story. Dragon: Calanoth Color: Brown Brief Description: Tactless but easygoing and rarely negative. Generally prefers to take a backseat and let his rider run about and expend his boastful energy. Win or loose, Calanoth likes to chase. It's that simple. He hates to miss a single one! The potential of siring a mess of hatchlings also appeals to the large brown. Not that he'd be any more or less happy come hatching time. Whether they're his or not, Calanoth likes to see and interact with young dragons. Z'fer encourages Calanoth's fickle flight nature as he feels it proves his dragon's strength after surviving the plague. He's especially interested in Calanoth chasing the gold's of the weyr. While he's not outwardly stating that he's after the position of Weyrleader. He would certainly take the political and social boost winning the Sr. Gold flight would give him. Username: magnadearel Rider: VosinAge: 25 Wing: Time Rider Brief Description: A setter of goals, and go-getter. Vos is a girl who loves adventure and almost never turns it down! She is extremely loyal to her twin sister, and younger brothers. Dragon: Tiaeth Color: Bronze Brief Description: Tiaeth is the deep breath that gets Vos to slow down. He enjoys laughter and gossip. Prompt One What makes your dragon take wing in this flight? Is he vying for the lofty position of Weyrleader? Does he want to father the next generation of wingriders? Is he just bored? Give us a little insight into your dragon's agenda (or lack of one). Mostly Vosin enjoys the thrill that comes with each flight. She'll set the goal to win the flight then do her best to see that Tiaeth does so. The bronze agrees to it because it's the best way to get all the current gossip about the flight. Want to know what happened? Ask Him! He's completely happy if he wins or not. The pair have no direct goals toward weyrleader, but they probably wouldn't say no if the chance came up. Also new to the time, they are interested to see if the golds of this time measure up to the golds of their time. ;P I ACKNOWLEDGE BY SIGNING UP THAT I PLAN ON PARTICIPATING IN THIS EVENT AND ACCEPT THE POTENTIAL IC CONSEQUENCES THEREOF.

Username: Nilah44 Rider: VesinAge: 25 Wing: Time Rider Brief Description: An ambitious, protective and reliable, calculating romantically naive girl who is all about her siblings. She is extremely loyal to her family and even doubly so to her twin sister. Dragon: Kelilayth Color: Bronze Brief Description: A carefree, sharp-whitted, candid dragon who is accepting of most everyone yet can get serious when needed. Prompt Response: Prompt One What makes your dragon take wing in this flight? Is he vying for the lofty position of Weyrleader? Does he want to father the next generation of wingriders? Is he just bored? Give us a little insight into your dragon's agenda (or lack of one). It was Kelilayth that had decided to participate in the flight even though Vesin thought they should stay out of it. He knows that his rider is still feeling out of sorts in this new time and hopes that by participating in the flight, this new time will start to feel more like home to Vesin and will help her grow more accustomed to it. He hopes it will be a catalyst of sort. Whether he wins or not isn't much of a concern especially since he'll be flying against his clutchmate. If it achieves his desired goal, he couldn't care who caught the gold, though he would like to make those of his time proud and win, he'd be just as happy if Tiaeth won. Prompt Two What is your rider/dragon pair's relationship with the goldriders of the weyr? Have they interacted greatly, or only in passing? Do they think goldriders in general should take more responsibility in the weyr, or step down as the last vestige of archaic practices? If you'd like, you can propose a little backstory with your pair and Shylla/Evmeth, as long as it's fairly vague and they were never best friends/worst enemies/true loves, etc etc. The matter of where this pairs 'loyalties' lie has been a subject to debate for Vesin since they arrived in the new time. On one hand, her heart says she should be loyal to Sereth and Nersha because they're 'home', yet it also says that Igen was their home so even then they really aren't from home. Her mind says she should support the senior gold in this time. Vesin and Kelilayth have had little interaction with, well, anybody. Vesin has been holed up trying to sort out the whole "time travel" business. I ACKNOWLEDGE BY SIGNING UP THAT I PLAN ON PARTICIPATING IN THIS EVENT AND ACCEPT THE POTENTIAL IC CONSEQUENCES THEREOF.

Username: TawnyAngel Rider: C'tisAge: 31 Wing: 2nd Wing Brief Description: C'tis is a prickly, smart, snarky git with a hot temper and large chip on his shoulder about the political set up of the Weyr re: dragon colours. Dragon: Malcarreth Color: Blue Brief Description: Malcarreth is also a smart snarky git but he is more restrained than his rider, and also a lot more pessimistic about the probable outcomes of most situations. Prompt Response: Prompt One What makes your dragon take wing in this flight? Is he vying for the lofty position of Weyrleader? Does he want to father the next generation of wingriders? Is he just bored? Give us a little insight into your dragon's agenda (or lack of one). He didn't expect to win of course. He was a blue, a small one at that, and he and C'tis didn't have the support of followers to bolster them. That didn't mean he wasn't going to fly however, to stay out of the race was as good as saying that it wasn't his place to give chase to a gold, and thus to improve his rider's chance at attaining the rank of Weyrleader. C'tis was too young for that as yet of course but it was important to lay a foundation for yourself. As the afternoon wore on Malcarreth lay on his ledge in the sun to conserve his energy but the twitching of the tips of his tail gave away his restlessness. There was danger involved in any flight of course, if a big bronze lashed out at him his wings could easily be ruined and that could be the end of everything. It wasn't as though their day job was safe however so he supposed it didn't really matter too much in the end. C'tis was inside, binding his fists with leather in anticipation of the flight and thus the fight ahead. Malcarreth knew that his rider was planning to support O'ail's faction regardless of how much it would piss off his wingleader but he himself had no plans to try to take out Absoth's rivals, all of his efforts would be his own. Even if he couldn't win he intended to fly well and last through until the end if he could. Let them see what a blue could do when he set his mind to it. She is also hugely adventurous and ambitious, never one to turn down the thrill and challenge of a chase! Dragon: Pycath Color: Brown Brief Description: Pycath is a ruthless schemer, a-grade con artist, with an ambition to match. He values the strength of his Weyr as a whole over nearly all else. Prompt Response: Prompt One What makes your dragon take wing in this flight? Is he vying for the lofty position of Weyrleader? Does he want to father the next generation of wingriders? Is he just bored? Give us a little insight into your dragon's agenda (or lack of one). Weakness could not be tolerated, not after that disastrous excuse for the clutch Hiraeth had produced. Winning himself would be the ideal of course - he had strength and intelligence to spare and had no doubt at all that he would pass these traits on to his offspring - but failing that Pycath's main aim was to cull the pack of chasing males. Not cull as in kill of course, all of those fit enough to chase were of at least some use to the Weyr, but only the very finest could be permitted to last until the end of the chase and sire Evmeth's next clutch. Others might shy away from what they considered 'not nice' but Pycath fully intended to do what was right for the greater good. Was that not the duty of a dragon, after all?
