Even from behind, even in a crouch, Taym cut a distinctive figure: skinny and serious in austere-but-fashionable clothing, he made Ever quirk just a little smile. A moment later, he was easing up behind the man, slow and quiet, hands in his pocket, to peer over his shoulder. To check out what he was doing.

It was unlikely Taym wouldn't hear him coming, but he tried, all the same, sinking to a slow crouch and wrapping arms around his own knees. The truth was that he didn't know what to say, didn't have anything to say. So he'd just wait for Taym to notice him. Something scathing, maybe, biting, definitely.

Ever could take it, now.

He was, in point of fact, monopolizing an entire table. Reports--a great deal of them carefully censored with rows of black bars--were spread neatly in front of him. He was sorting them by some mysterious criteria into three piles, and occasionally affixing an item in the middle pile with a neon sticky flag.

In one hand he held the page he was currently skimming, and in the other--and this would have startled someone who knew Taym better than Ever, and might even have startled Ever--he held a brownie, of the kind that comes wrapped in cellophane and covered in rainbow candy-coated chocolate chips, although these had been pried out and disposed of prior to ingestion, apparently. He became aware of Ever's presence mid-bite, his eyes sliding over to him without comment, at first. His ear was missing a ragged chunk, the perimeters of the wound bristling with stitches but already--weapon bond--looking almost as healed as a stray cat's catch-and-release mark. Doubtless the ball-chopping comments would plague him for the rest of his life.

He finished chewing--he was eating the brownie like eating a brownie was a chore, like he might gag--and then said, in a tone that was startlingly friendly: "Ambrodiel."

"Every time you say my name I feel like I've done something wrong." It came with a quirk of a smile, a tip of his head, more reflexive than anything else. A defense mechanism. Taym and friendly set off warning bells that made Ever pause before he slid in to sit beside him, instead. He brushed the edge of a report thoughtfully, not enough to knock it out of place but just faintly curious.

"What happened to your ear?" He didn't hesitate to ask, at least, without looking up from the papers. He'd prod through what he could reach, picking out a word here and there. Not enough to figure out what was going on, but.

"Pissed off America Jones?"

He made a dismissive sound in the back of his throat, turning back to the page. "America Jones," he informed him, "would not go for the ears. Not mine, anyway. I'm pretty sure she's ordering up a month of mourning gowns and black veils for what's already gone."

This wasn't strictly true. There had been cooing. It would have pissed him off, had he not been more or less elated, high on pain and Valium and sex and affection and, most importantly, success. "Had a mission," he said. "Got a little ******** up. It was aiming for my face," he finished, vague and cheerful. "Coulda been worse. How are things, Ambrodiel?"

"Dull." He settled his head in his hand and focused on Taym, instead -- Ever no longer high on his own sex and affection and attention. The idea made him chew on the inside of his cheek a bit, scratching at the side of his face and letting his eyes wander to that wounded ear, the missing chunk, the stitches. It was enough to make him feel a little, well, wussy.

"So butch, Thompson." It wasn't quite flirting, but it was close -- teasing, with a twitch of a smile, and Ever was just out enough for it to be annoying. "The injury, I mean. The rest of you less so."

It was easy to equate homophobia, even Taym's stifled, quiet brand, with the sort of asinine masculinity that would have a man rising up in rage at being flirted with.

For a man afraid of what a person like Ever was because of what it said about himself, it would have been true. But Taym's particular brand of disgust--and disgust was the word for it--was rooted firmly in very secure and uncontested heterosexuality. He shot Ever a mildly irritated glare but didn't otherwise rise to the bait, and it was only partially his good mood. His general cushion of self-confidence was also undented by the insinuation that he was anything less than manful and rugged, goddammit.

"Might want to have a talk about that word with any of the many dozens of lipstick-and-heels wearing women on this Island with far worse scars to show than a little love-bite. If you haven't developed the immunity yet, you will. Almost forget about this one," he added, indicating his throat vaguely, "until I'm off the Island and catch someone looking. No one here does." So the self-deprecation, at least, was still in effect.

"You have to have the attitude to back it up, I guess. I mean, my nose was broken when I was around nineteen..." He paused to brush finger against the bridge, slow, and shrug at the same time: unconcerned, really, by the damage that had been done. It hadn't damaged his looks, Ever thought, but that was mostly because he didn't think there was that much to damage.

"....but no one ever mistaken me for butch." And there was a grin, slow, as he lowered his hand. Ever back to normal, and Taym would probably never know that their mission had left him rattled for a couple days, drunk and sleeping it off. That was for the best. It had been embarrassing enough in the moment.

"Can't imagine that they have," he answered drily but without offense, peeling off a lime-green flag, affixing it to the corner of the page, and sorting it into a stack before reaching for another. "We can't all be walking around in a cloud of testosterone and brawn and Neanderthal chest-beating," he added consolingly, as if to imply that he did exactly this. Taym's uncanny ability to straddle a line between sarcasm and sincerity (his impressions of H, for example, both satire and alarmingly accurate in the same instant) suggested worrying things about his ability to lie in general.

It was entertaining -- Taym, without his serious face on, without his professional edge that cut people out or the bite that turned them away. It made Ever's smile genuine, head propped on his hand and tipped to one side, taking him in. For this moment, this split second maybe, he could see what appealed to America in him. And whatever other girls had succumbed.

"The few do enough of that to make up for the rest of us, I think. What are you doing?" This last came with a gesture to the paperwork, especially one report that seemed more black bar than lingering content. A word, a strip, a word, a strip. It seemed to him there wasn't much there to learn from.

"Sorting," he said, and maybe in another mood he'd have left it there, snapped. Instead he managed another bite of brownie, looking like he wished he hadn't, before he expounded. "These are reports from FEAR monitoring locations in civilian-populated areas, just things from the past couple of months. These," he indicated one stack, "are a cause for concern but with no actual reports of any substance. These," another, "can be safely disregarded. And these," the stack with the flags, "need looking into and possibly dealing with. There's already teams on most of them. Others have been assessed as non-vital, but that was by people who weren't me and I need work to do anyway. Get a job in the field, Ambrodiel. Makes buying cigarettes easier. What are you doing?" he countered, non-confrontational, not his usual and it better be good or get the ******** out of my way.

"Buttering you up." It was cheerful, though, and also bullshit. If Ever had been buttering Taym up, maybe he could have gone without the flirting and the teasing and the general harassment. Still. He shook his head sobering just a touch as he took in the work Taym was doing, sliding slowly back into focus.

"I want to learn Welsh, and study some more Greek. And at the Life meeting, someone said something about funding for online courses, but I don't have a computer." Ever could have let that be it, have let Taym slide into the next question all on his own, but he didn't quite trust it to happen that way. Instead, it would be drawn out of him, slowly and painfully, so he continued. "I know you have one. How'd you get it?"

"The traditional way," he answered, setting aside the censored report onto the "not a concern" stack and reaching for one with more to go on. "Unbelievable though it may sound, money," he elaborated, in a sarcastic, lecturing tone reminiscent of a soothing 1950s PSA, "can be exchanged for goods--for example a laptop from Best Buy--and services--for example, runic outtfitting."

Ever smiled again, reflexively -- and then it melted away, slowly, into something thoughtful and uncertain instead, concerned maybe. A computer was an expensive purchase, he thought, as someone who'd never actually looked into buying one, who'd checked the internet at the public library now and then --

"How much?" This was blunt, direct, without anything behind it, nor any shame that usually came with this sort of question. He needed to know, so he asked.

It was this, finally, that made Taym uncomfortable.

He shifted uneasily, glancing at Ever and then back to the page.

"I don't know," he said. "Depends on what you want. I don't know what kind of s**t you do for online classes and I know ******** about that s**t anyway. Eight hundred bucks?" he guessed, in a tone that did not inspire confidence as to the accuracy of the guess. "For the laptop. And then a couple hundred bucks to get it runic-ready. You're in Life, maybe they won't gouge you."

Ever was still watching him, frowning just a bit, unsure why it was such a difficult question. Not judging, just oblivious, ignorant. Didn't even know where to start, so he licked his lips and tried to simplify it a bit.

"I had a computer, for about three months, but it was a three-time-over hand me down from a friend of the family. I've never really owned one." So he paused, spreading his hands, straightening as he did. "Zeke can show me how to use it, I think, but I don't have a ******** clue what I need. It has to go on the internet, I guess. And I need to be able to write on it."
