Rumors of strange creatures and places appearing have popped up ever since the Moon began to glow an amber red. People call this event the Blood Moon. Once such place was recently found by your friends. When the Blood Moon is full, a passage appears on Ayr that leads to a strange swampy glade. Gathering together a group of people, you've traveled to this place to test yourself. Your friend challenged you to a test. They said that deep with in the swamp, if you follow the twisting pathway, past the dead white tree and across a fallen statue, you'll come to a glade surrounded by a ruin. In the middle of this glade is a black flower that pulses with a dim purple glow. They have challenged you to go and pick this flower and bring it back as proof of your courage. If you don't, they said, you're a coward!

You may have just one person be challenged, or multiple and you all meet up outside the cliff that the challenger told you opened up to reveal the swamp.

“So, Zami, you gonna choose your clan yet, or just be useless and purple eyed forever?” Harasathi drawled over dinner that morning.

“Hara!” scolded Naavami, their mother, “She is far from useless.”

“True.” said Hara, “Just annoying.”

“If dad were here, he wouldn't let you say things like that!” piped up Red's little sister, Coyosia, “He'd be so mad!”

“Yes, well, he's not here so...” She turned to Zami, “Well?”

“None of your damn business...” growled Red.

“Did the storm help at all?” Harasathi pressed, “Or did it fail to get through your thick head?”

“Stop bothering her, Hara. She's got to do her own thing here...” said the ever calm Raeshir.

“Yeah, well, someone's gotta get on her case. Vetty's gone, and you won't take charge...” she retorted, “So who does it fall to? Me.”

“Well what about Mama?” said Raeshir back, “She's kind of our mother.”

“Psh.” Hara scoffed, “You know the little s**t doesn't care about her parents. It was always Vetty, always always Vetty...”

The ground beneath them rumbled, and Hara – and her chair – fell over.

“I would advise...” said their mother calmly, her earthy eyes neutral, “Not speaking of me – or her – in that way while I'm around.”

“So what about when you're not?” asked Harasathi, as she tried to stand up. The ground rumbled again. “Ma!”

Naavami turned to red. “So, dear. Any thoughts about your clan.”

“Yeah.” said Red, “But I don't wanna share.”

“Ah. Fair enough.” said Naavami.

“Oh, are you going to tell it to the chief?” asked Raeshir.

“Yeah.” said Red.

“I bet I can guess it when you choose!” chimed Coyosia.

“Eh.” Honestly, Red thought it would be obvious. It was a secret because she didn't want to share. She had no other motives.

“So... what? You're too uruu to go to the chief?” said Hara, reseating herself. Another rumble of earth, and Hara floated above the table, to show her mother that she wasn't in the chair at all. “Is our little Zami a scaredy uruu about her clan?”

“I'm not!” she said, standing up, her own chair falling to the ground.

“Prove it.” said Hara, smirking.

“I will!” said Zami, storming out, “You'll see!”

Naavami watched her go and shook her head. “Now look what you've done.”

“I'll keep an eye on her.” said Raeshir, rising, “I know where she's likely to go.”

~~~
Red peered over the cliff at the swamp. She'd heard of a mystical flower deep within, past lots of dangers, that only grew during the blood moon. If she got that flower, she'd show Hara she wasn't an Uruu. She'd show Hara she was brave, and strong, and better than that stupid airbrain of a sister.
She just had to... go in.
She wasn't hesitating, of course, as she meandered by the entrance to the swamps. She was just... getting the lay of the land.
Yeah.
Far behind and out of view was her brother, Raeshir. He fully intended to stay unseen and just keep an eye on her from afar...
Peral's 12... how old is Zama right now?
Peralian, finally allowed outside the healing tent after his exposure to channeling too much magic, was restless. Two weeks wasted! Well.. not really wasted, just... spent lying captive to the Shaman's lessons... which meant constant teaching. Terrible! Absolutely terrible! Being trapped and not allowed to even practice magic in case he hurt himself again.... He was, of course, carrying his staff and bow with him as he wandered about camp, stretching his legs and wondering when Yrral would get distracted long enough for him to make his escape. A few hunters approached him and soon Yrral was in deep discussion... Perfect! Peralian thought as he slunk off out of camp. Now to get far enough away that he can't find me easily!
Peralian wanted to go check out the location he'd heard other children in the camp talk about. Lying in a tent meant he could hear all sorts of things! Just not act on them...
A test of courage... a place of scary things and potential mystic things! He wanted to explore it! But Yrral had made it quite clear he was to behave himself and not use magic until he was fully healed. I am fully healed, Peralian thought with annoyance. I know myself. His yes spotted a notbajovin pelt wearing girl. Perfect he thought, I'll just say I got.. dragged along with her crazy ideas and let her take most of the blame... Maybe Yrral will believe me too since she's a trouble maker!
He saw she was pacing in front of the area that led to the location the others had mentioned.
"You going to enter or just stand here watching?" He asked sardonically as he walked up.
Slightly older
Red nearly jumped out of (both) of her skins as the hybrid came up behind her. She recovered quickly and, pretending she had totally been intending to move as she did, brushed her hands off.
“Yeah.” she said, giving the hybrid an impetuous look, “Sure I am.” She could guess why he was here: same reason as she was, to prove he wasn't a coward.
He probably was.
“You here for the flower thing?” she grunted, crossing her arms.
Now that she had an audience, she couldn't hesitate anymore... even if the swamp looked distinctly unfriendly. With one last look of misgiving, she decided that – since she was slightly older and since she didn't like the boy very much at all – she would take the lead.
“Then get a move on.” she commanded, starting down the cliff, ignoring the dread building up in the back of her mind...
He smirked as she jumped. She wasn't paying attention at all! And seemed nervous... scared of this place maybe? She'd attacked that Ysali dragon he'd on.. so she wasn't too wimpy he knew that... but maybe she didn't like scary things? Something to remember!
Peralian snorted. "Flower? Why would I be hear for the flower? I'm hear for the mystery! The magic that's gotta be hiding in here! A place that only opens up during the Blood Moon? It's gotta be magical..." Flowers were for wimpy girls. Unless they were for his mother... maybe I'll get it for her he thought... she does like presents and it could make up for the scare I gave her...
He followed her down the cliff, noting that there was someone watching them from afar. Good... a witness that he was merely following her lead and it was totally not his fault he was disobeying the very clear orders he'd been given. "What's this flower thing?"
Quote:
You have arrived at the foot of the cliff. The moon hasn't risen just yet, but it should soon. All about you is darkness, broken only by the far off starts above you and the pale mists swirling about even though there is no breeze. The night is silent; no insects buzz, no dragons call out, there is no sound except what you make. As the Blood Moon rises in the East, casting a reddish amber glow upon the swirling mists, you hear a rumblings sound and soon the earth beneath you shakes and quivers. The cliff suddenly breaks apart and a howling wind rushes out from the newly opened crack. As suddenly as it began, it stops. And silence descends once more. Before you is a large crack in the cliffs... shall you enter and test your courage?
If you enter, Go to Passage.
If you chicken out, Go to Flee
Peralian had snorted at her flower. She snorted at his mystery. Mystery?! That was for mages and wimpy healers like her sister. Red didn't like mystery or ambiguity. She punched mystery and ambiguity in the face!
“Ha.” she said, carefully but nimbly scaling the rocks, “Well duh, its magical.” she landed on the ground neatly, her pelt waving with the force of her fall. “And dangerous.”
Not that he'd run away from danger. He'd handled that dragon pretty well. He'd had a cheap shot, but it'd been well enough.
“You don't know about the flower?!” she said incredulously, turning to him, “Everybody knows about the flower...”
She would have explained further, except something in the night air made her nervous. She stopped, looking around, her back to the wall. What was it that was bothering her?
It was nothing.
Just like the time with the dragons, there was nothing: no cries, no calls, no wind.
No wind. In Ayr.
She drew her axes, seeking through the swirling mists for the threat, whatever it was. The blood moon tinted the clouds a rusty color, seeping along the walls of the canyon until the whole canyon was suddenly red, like the inside of a mouth.
The ground rumbled, and Zami braced against the cliff, looking up to make sure no surprises were coming from above. She felt the rock move behind her and, with a snarl, leapt away to see the wall crack open, letting out a gust of shrieking wind that tore at her face and threatened to steal her pelt. She held it down out of habit, glaring – eyes streaming – into the fissure.
And then it stopped.
Zami stared at it, her hair and pelt akimbo, her throwing axes at the ready. She blinked.
“Uh.” she managed, articulately, more nervous than before.
"I've been in the healer's tent for the past two weeks... and before that I was off learning magic. Not a lot of time to gossip about flowers." Peralian said snidely. As he walked he noticed that the wind was gone... but the mists moved like it still blew. Silence, in a land always filled with the whistle of wind and the soft sounds of animals... This was definitely a place worth disobeying Yrral over! Totally mystical. He felt it when the moon rose, felt it's call once more. But Yrral had taught him to ignore it, block it out somewhat so that it didn't seduce him with it's power again... much as he wanted to use that power...
He stopped a little ways from Zama as the mist was dyed red by the rising moon. She had her back to the cliff... a cliff that was suddenly forming a crack! Not a good idea to have your back against that, he thought in awe as the cliff opened with a rumbling shake of the land. What magic was this? Did some Gaili do this? If so how? He was grinning, this was perfect! A secret land! Hidden! Magical!
He stood in the rush of wind that streamed out of the opening, smelling the scents of a marsh beyond, of adventure to be had!
"Come on!" He said eagerly, a wide grin on his face as he strode forward through the crack when she hesitated. "Not scared of a little mystery land are you?"
He just had to find out what lay beyond!
HAH. A mage. She knew it. And a wimp at that: when she got herself hurt, she was out of the healers tent in days. Mainly, though, because neither she nor her sister could stand each other for long.
She stared, tense, at the opening. It looked like danger, and she was fairly certain that something terrible lay beyond.
In fact, she wouldn't be surprised if it did, the way it smelled. Surrepticiously, she glanced up the cliff.
It wouldn't be too hard to climb back out she thought, Maybe if I said my stomach hurt... . She could probably get away with it too.
But the hybrid sealed the deal. “I'm not scared!” she snapped at him. The challenge had been made, and so she would do this. She shoved past him, into the crack, and the cavern beyond...
Quote:
The crack in the cliff is filled with sharp rocks and is barely lit. Only a faint red glow comes from above where the cliff's broken halves meet. As you stumble your way through, you are continuously surrounded by a wailing wind that howls by you as it flees the Swamp. The further along you travel the stronger the smell of decaying life and stagnant water gets. Finally you reach the end of the cave. Before you lies a swamp like no other you have seen before.
There are trees here, but most of them look like they are dying; drooping and covered in hanging moss as if they don't have the will to stand up straight any longer. Strange pale blue balls of fire float about the swamp, meandering about on unseen paths. Small red dots flicker towards you then vanish, eyes of the animals that live here. As you walk forward, you notice that there is no boundary between land and water. grass grows on the water, making it look like land; while the land is often submersed under the water so that to follow the path before you, your feet get soaked. Strange hooting calls echo about, and you feel as if many eyes are upon you.
In the distance you spot a pale white tree, shining through the gray-green mists that lurk above the water and obscure everything.
You may continue forward, Go to Path
or you may flee, Go to Flee.
The cave was narrow and unpleasant, even for Zami, who had grown up in the claustrophobic canyons of Ayr. She felt the sharp edges of the rocks press up against her skin as she walked – against her better judgment (if she could ever be accused of posessing that quality) towards the source of the tortured wind and the foul odor. The red light illuminated enough to Zami for her to know that this was a bad place.
Of course, she wasn't scared – of course not.
I just... I don't know about this... she thought, as she barely managed to avoid being scratched by the umpteenth rock in the tunnel.
But she couldn't go back now; she had to prove – to her family and to this idiot – that she was brave. She paused, squinting at a brighter light ahead. The smell was horrible here, but it felt like it was coming from the light.
“Hey.” she whispered, grasping – mentally, of course – for Peralian's presence, “That looks like a way out.”
These two have such different reactions XD It's fun reading!
Peralian was ecstatic about the place: spooky scene was perfect! The cliff''s rose above the must and towered over head, only a crack between them allowing the red light of the moon through to light their way. He had his mother's eyes.. which meant his night vision was not as good as his father's.. He wished it was so he could see better, but he liked colors too...
Wailing winds and the stench of death telling him that what ever lay beyond this cramped tunnel was bound to be something dark and mysterious! He snickered at his companions comment.
"Out? You want out, go backwards... That's a way forward! Forward and into something worth exploring!"
He stepped around her and trotted out through the opening, wanting to see what lay beyond. Trees, dropping as if being alive was too much effort and covered more in dripping moss than leaves, hung over the low mist that clung to the land. It was more murky and less thick than the rest of Ayr's mists... but it meant he could see more! Stepping forward onto what he thought was grass, his foot shot through the moss into water.
"Woah!" He planted his staff into the area in front of him to catch his balance. "Now this is a swamp!" He whispered with a huge grin as he felt the cold water soak his pant leg. Green that he'd thought was grass covered the waters was actually moss lying atop the water, merging land and water into one seamless picture. The only real land he could tell was when the soil protruded in mounds above the water. And maybe the trees... but those could just be drowning trees and not near land.
Red growled in annoyance and hurried to catch up – like Oblivion was she going to let Peralian get ahead of her; the cocky, arrogant b*****d.
“I meant out of the cavern, ya stupid blue ur...” She recoiled at the scene before her, “..shund...”
This was definitely where the stench was coming from, and it was an eerie place. Red knew swamps – there were a few in Ayr – but she didn't like them. She preferred solid stone under her feet to mud and godless muck.
As swamps went, she was pretty sure something was seriously wrong with this one. Clearly, though, Peralian was forging ahead into the creepy, goopy, wispy water and Red refused to lose face to him. Ever.
She bared her teeth at the red eyes and the chittering beasts beyond, holding her axe warily and giving the creepy, dead, mossy trees a wide berth.
“Hey.” she pointed to the white tree, speaking for the comfort of her own voice (and the illusion of confidence) “Whats that, over there?”
PostPosted: Wed Oct 08, 2014 4:09 pm
Peralian poked around with his staff to search the area in front of him for solid ground. Much as he didn't mind getting dirty, that was some chilly water!
He looked up to see what Zama was pointing at. "Hmm.. Is that the tree I heard some of the others mention? I recall them mentioning a pale tree and a statue beyond it... I only got bits and pieces of the story on this place." He walked forward, eyes scanning the area around. He notices the gleaming red lights that came and vanished; animals he thought. Though he wasn't sure what the pale balls of... fiery things were in the distance. Was that the swamp fire his mother had mentioned? What was it she'd said... never follow the swamp fires, they only lead to you getting lost or something? But then mother always got lost...
"Let's go see what's over there. It's on what seems to be patch of solid land so might as well!"
And it was different than all the other trees around them. It didn't look like it'd lost the will to live.
“It probably is...” said Zami. “Lets see if we can find the flower.”
Yes.
The flower that would prove she wasn't a coward.
She knew that Peralian was about to head to the landmass with the tree, so she forged on recklessly ahead, trying to outdo him in that department.
What am I getting into? wondered a tiny voice, often ignored in the back of her head. It continued to be ignored...
A statue – just beyond the tree and out of place in the wild lands of ayr – was briefly revealed by the mists before they shrouded everything again. Strange sounds echoed out, and Zami – by sheer luck – could see something strange coming towards them in the red moonlight...
Quote:
As you walk along the damp winding trail that meanders through the swamp, you sense something following you. Before you is the pale white tree that you were told to pass so next must be a fallen statue. As you look about the mists swirl about and you see in ahead of you a huge shattered stone facing staring at you. Then the mists swirl and its hidden again. Was this perhaps the statue? Every other direction has trees and more trees. As you stand by the pale tree that glows in the red moon light you hear a sound. Spinning around you spot ::
If Group's total LUK is between 20 and 29: You spot 3 Borlarn (LUK 20)
Silently and quickly, the shadows come charging towards you. In the reddish light of the Blood moon you see the deadly slim shapes of the Borlan, deadly armored hunters.
Zami stared at the approaching blips in the mist, trying to figure out what they were.
Soon, she realized, they were approaching. Fast.
“Hey, watch out!” she called to Peralian, shoving him aside as she threw one of her axes. It clanged off of something hard and stayed put. She could see it caught in the dent it made in what looked like a carapace of some monstrous creature, something she had never seen on Ayr before.
“What the...?!” she managed before the beasts were upon them!
Why is she so obsessed over this flower? Peralian wondered to himself. It's a flower. She should just relax and enjoy the creepy mystery of this place. He was certainly enjoying it! Be better if I could just tap into the blood moon power, he thought to himself, go really wild! But after what had happened last time... he wasn't willing to chance it here. He was still hurting from it after all.
Peralian was enjoying it a bit too much that he wasn't paying as much attention as he should have been. He'd seen the eyes, he knew there were creatures out here... he just wasn't really prepared when Zama pushed him aside to throw an axe. Not that he was complaining, since it meant he wasn't the one getting attacked at the moment, but it did irritate him that he hadn't noticed the creatures and had to be pushed out of the way.
He muttered a curse as he realized what these were: Borlarn! But they live only on Soudul, he thought to himself, what are they doing here? He only knew because he's father had told them all about the animals he'd encountered... and this matched the description of sleek, deadly armored creature of smooth sharp edges... It was also deathly silent when it charged. Da had mentioned that he thought as he righted himself, standing knee deep in cold water. He concentrated, making sure to ignore the Blood Moon's seductive power and reached inside himself to call out to the shadows at Zama's feet. He forced them off the ground and towards the Borlarn that was closest to her, wrapping the sleek shadows about its neck to strangle it to death.
With a chilling scream, one turned towards him, a bloodthirsty gleam in its eye.
