Cee had gotten a text message that actually gave her pause. It was enough to stop her from rearranging her shoes into a rainbow color pattern. She'd got the Red and Orange together but hadn't even started on the rest. She hated to leave a project like this unfinished. She stopped, read it again, and immediately lit a cigarette. She'd been noticed. She fiddled again with her phone, tapping out a message. rejam To: whatsisface From: Queen C u home im comin over Cee pondered a moment, grabbed her coat, and speed walked to Taym's room.

He'd left the door open, not so much to invite her in as to have the upper hand in case she was going to show up in nothing but a towel again, which, all things considered, would be incredibly awkward for his current situation. It did not help that he was, despite himself, half-hoping she was going to show up in nothing but a towel, even if all he'd be able to do was turn her away (possibly after a good eyeful).
But then he'd thought of the Sahara and the copies, and as a mental bucket of cold water this was highly effective. So he'd left the door open so he'd be prepared, and he'd sat down in the chair in front of his desk, his feet propped up, and made headway through a cheap bottle as a warm-up even though, truth told, he was already half-drunk--as he normally was before sleep of late.
By the time she arrived he was smoking a cigarette, windows open as they typically were, and trying to think of what he'd say if America made one of her unexpected visits and he was hoping, praying, that Cee was going to do anything but talk about the clones.

With the door cracked she didn't bother knocking. Her head darted around, bobbling in a bird-like way, as she checked for company. "All by yerself?" Bottle. Cigarette. Check. She closed the door behind her and fished a slightly bent joint from the inside of her bandana. It held a fruity perfumey aroma that matched her hair product but who hadn't smoked some weird stuff in the past? "I swear I ain't here fer fishy stuff.." Cee lifted her hands in an innocent way. Taym was usually automatic for the sarcastic remark but she figured heading it off at the pass would be the best maneuver since she actually wanted to talk. "I got a..." She fished her phone from her ample chest, "..text today.." She was pulling it up, holding it out. It said after observation and demonstrating adequate ability on her last external mission, that she was being considered for promotion. Cee shuffled while he read and lit the joint. It said she should be prepared to go on another mission as team leader in order to gauge her ability further. She looked... slightly upset about this.

"Congratulations," he said finally, around an exhale and a forced little cough. "Not surprising. You've been working hard. Work ethic's a woefully uncommon thing around here." His usual tension was even more amped-up than usual, fed by a suite of uncomfortable variables. "Got any information on what it'll be yet?" He was not sure why she'd come to him, but he was, in his way, flattered.

"Nope." She tapped her foot and stepped forward to offer him the joint. "But like..." She splayed her hands in front of her like he should be understanding what that meant. "They want me in charge of something? Like making the decisions and s**t?" Which was fine when you wanted Starbucks and decided someone else should get it for you. That was her kind of delegating authority. "Someone's gonna be like watchin what I do." Are you not getting her stress here Taym?

"Remember what I said Lawrence did in the desert? He got promoted for that, or at least partly for that. For a half-assed act of betrayal which made him inadvertently useful. He's in your division." He swapped cigarette for joint, the former going into the ashtray, and he held the smoke for a second before continuing, placidly: "You're gonna be fine."

Cee waited with a slightly tapping toe before she very dramatically tossed herself onto the bed and rolled with a loud, "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh."
When she stopped she was on her back and sat up to take the joint back. "Vote'a confidence?" She didn't wish weird clones on anyone. She'd do whatever mission they gave her but there was at least some small desire not to hang out with a clone. questionable morals aside.
After a moment of silence, a slow drag on the weed, she stood up and paced past him to hnd it back. She then circled th room slowly looking for signs of anything like co-habitation. "How's the lovey girlfriend s**t goin?"
The transition to what she needed to hear and what she wanted to know was almost instantaneous.

He disregarded the question for the moment, turning back to promo and letting her scout his impeccably-clean room for signs that almost weren't there--almost, because there was a shallow tray scavenged from somewhere and resting on the bedside table in a futile effort to corral the endless march of bobby pins he was now doomed to find in his sheets and in the cracks between the floorboards, or materializing between the active paws of the cats when they were out for their hour-a-day romp. It was almost enough to make him take back all the "never cut your hair" demands. "Even if you weren't in Death, I'm sure you'd do fine. You give a ******** about doing a good job or you wouldn't constantly be looking for spars and training. But you are in Death, so you'll definitely do fine, and Caelius will tell you you're a useless ******** ******** who's nothing but a burden and then the people who actually care will see to it that you've got a new coat and fewer bathroom-cleaning shifts. You'll be fine," he repeated, leaning back with the bottle, and then finally succumbing to the rest of it. "And it's--fine," he said, with the barest beat of a hesitation.

Cee'd paused in front of the cats and peered through the bars, wiggling her finger at them. She was more of a purse-dog person. It was usually worth it to just let Taym wear himself out on the anti-establishment rants. When she heard the slightly tentative final response, Cee nodded as if she was waiting for it on cue. "Don' look fine. Ya look like s**t, more than usual," she noted, "and people all happy'n in love usuuuually are like beamin. Or textin'em. Or sharin'a bed wit em. Or is tha on-again-off-again back off since tha other night?" When they'd texted.

"It's-- on," he said, bristling a little. "It stays on. Thanks for letting me know I look like s**t, though, really appreciate it. We're just--taking it slow." Postponing the inevitable. "How many notches have you added to your bedpost since the last time we talked, anyway?"

"Still on one hand!" She waggled 2 maybe 3 fingers but it was hard to tell if it was deliberate or just for expression. Cee had a 'in your face' sort of look to her. She sauntered over, used his lap briefly as a chair, and took a swig from the bottle without a glass. After putting it down she plucked the weed back and lit it again. She leaned backwards across him to blow the smoke in the air before hopping to her feet. "You gotta be doing somethin wrong then. You should be textin'er or invitin'er over or somethin. Men ain't know how ta romance a chick. Ya gotta woooooo her." She automatically assumed the man was failing and she hardly cared that he didn't ask for her advice.

Fiona's restless indignation at Cee's liberties with his person helped distract him from his initial urge to keep her there. He was being good. He was being so very, very good. (America slept in his room two, maybe three nights out of seven; she spent the rest curled up with Kostya and he knew it even if he tried to make himself believe it wasn't true. It wasn't the same. It wasn't an equivalent analogy at all. It was worse. It wasn't nearly as bad. It was terrible. It was nothing.) He let himself look, at least, and didn't try to pretend he wasn't. "I'll have you know the taking it slow was at my ********' behest," he informed her flatly. "She tried to get me to move in." Dangerous. Don't go there. Too late. Maybe intentional? Maybe he wanted to tell someone. Maybe he'd hoped it would be Bix or even Maebe, possibly Peyton in the right situation. Instead what he got was Cee. Dangerous. The gossip. Change the subject. "Anyway why, exactly, would I be taking advice on dedicated wooing from someone who's racking up a tally as fast as she's able?" Contrary to the words he didn't sound irritated. He sounded, if anything, tired.

"Because people like me." She leaned, hands on hips, to point at him and giving a good cleavage view. "People who would never probly talk ta me or have anythin in common wit me... They end up wantin me. Likin me." Cee shrugged, "It's a gift." "HA! Naw I know what people's scorecards round here are lookin like and I am not even a rankin star. Plus a lot of these people are boooooring." Cee now did crawl on the bed, sprawling out and propping her head up on her hand sideways. "So why ain'tcha move in? It's a pretty nice house." Because when Cee and America had hung out there, she didn't meet Kostya and conversation never veered in that direction. Beers and baseball was pretty all encompassing.

It was not surprising to him that Cee was acquainted with the house. Nor was it surprising that question incurred a swell of shame and self-loathing that had him reaching for the joint again. It would have been easy, especially given his usual habit of prevaricating, of dismissing, of pretending to mystery that he didn't have, to just tell her it was none of her business. But humiliation felt comfortable, and an opportunity to vent felt like a relief, and maybe he could use this as currency against her later, in some way. And it would besides prevent the talk from going around to the topic of the clones. "Do you know Konstantin Bashmet?" he asked.

Her phone buzzed and she looked at it. She handled it lazily, not even holding it but poking at it while it sat on the bedspread. She smiled at whatever she'd gotten, poked it a couple times, glanced back up at Taym dumbly, then accessed Twitter to look up who he was asking about. "Oh.." She turned the phone. "Russian dude? America's sexless soulmate or whatever?" Now she remembered the tweet fights with Rep and Taym and various females about what defined a relationship. Her phone buzzed again and she brought the phone back to herself like a flash to check it.
