After getting unexpectedly saddled with Jordan for a duty roster, Taym had made it a habit to check the lists more thoroughly than most people were inclined to. So when he saw Maebe Grace Bertrand's name sharing a cell (and maybe it was a spreadsheet term but it had never felt more appropriate) with his own, he'd considered swapping out, or--unusually for Taym as a hunter but not so unusual for Taym as he had recently felt--simply finding some way to get out of it entirely. Instead, after turning the thought over and over, he'd simply opted to do nothing. A recent late-night storm had stirred up enough jungle debris to block one of the main paths, and so he'd brought along a second pair of work gloves because he wasn't sure Maebe'd have enough sense to show up in anything more practical than a miniskirt. He himself had ditched his uniform, and despite the heat was swaddled up in a hooded jacket that looked like it might have been expensive, and probably very nice before he'd gone and gotten blood all down one sleeve and streaked across the collar. He waited at the foot of the path smoking a cigarette, standing with one ankle crossed in front of the other and reading a paperback, smugly content at the idea that when she rounded the bend in the path to meet her work partner she'd find her day completely ruined.

Maebe did not have the common sense to check the roster, because there were only so many things that Maebe could focus on, so she chose to focus on herself. When she did round the corner - wearing a short pleated skirt, thank you - she had no idea what she was about to head into. It was his dream come true, then, when those quickened steps turned into slow, shocked taps, that eventually petered out into her just standing there. Her shoulders slumped, and her expression darkened with the telltale signs of my day is completely ruined. "Hello, sunshine." Maebe whined out, finally trudging forward towards him and plucking at his jacket once she'd made it close enough. "Fashion forward Friday, I see? Or is blood just in style for the unwashed masses lately? I can't be assed to keep up with trends like you do."

Grinding the cigarette out under the toe of his boot, he stuffed the book into one of his many pockets, and from another procured the gloves, which he handed over. "You damn well can't," he agreed flatly, "if that's your idea of work clothes. I hope you wore clean underwear, because I am expecting you to flash half the goddamned island climbing around getting s**t cleared."

"Underwear? What is this.. under..wear.." She played it well, going so far as to lean in and try to peek underneath her skirt for the lack of underwear that would become very obvious as she flipped up her - oh, just kidding, she totally was wearing underwear. She dropped the skirt and gave him a dirty look along with a punch to the shoulder. Then she took the gloves, as if she hadn't just punched him. "Hey. Thanks." Gloves were a remarkably practical, and appreciated gesture - one she should have thought of herself, considering how well manicured her hands were, and how much she cared about their state. She slipped them on, and started playing puppets with them. "Who's a grumpy mister, why it's Obadiah! Hello, Obadiah! Won't you be my neighbor?"

He watched her with no expression beyond a trace of very vague disgust, and then stooped to retrieve the cigarette butt and tuck it into his pocket. "Time for good fences," he said cryptically--maybe not cryptically, if Maebe's up on her Frost--and he set off down the path. "How's Cami?" he asked.

He wouldn't be surprised to know Maebe wasn't up on anything literal - she might have been, if she'd ever had a chance to go to college. Or even paid attention in high school. She might have absolutely loved books, in another life. In this one, none were handed to her, and Frost was lost above her head. She tried not to react when she heard her girlfriends name, because she knew he was only trying to get under her skin. What he didn't realize is that he'd been there for ages, just writhing right below the surface where no one could see. Not even her, most days. "Fantastic. I think her boobs got bigger. Must be all the attention I give them." She flashed a cheeky smile, and practically skipped as she started walking. "How's America?"

"Enthusiastically shacking up with big dumb Russians," he answered flatly. Had he known that this was actually true he might have been less glib about it. "So I'm sure her tits are in excellent condition. So has Cami just been selfish with yours, or what?"

Big dumb russians - whoa, had Kostya finally nailed it? Wait, he wasn't that big - " Excuse me my tits are very well taken care of, thanks. Maybe they wither around you because they know you're always watching." She covered her chest, pretending to play the coy innocent. "I'm not that kind of girl, Obadiah." She was that kind of girl. A quiet moment of silence fell over her as they walked, before she finally piped up again, quickly shoving her sudden thoughtfulness out of the way. "You shouldn't even talk, you're looking worse. I thought you were getting better at the whole eating thing."

She felt she'd hit a nerve, and swelled with an unearthly satisfaction. "Hey, that wasn't even an insult. I'm genuinely asking, because I'm concerned for your health. Are you a d**k to everyone who tries to make sure you don't die? Because I can just go back to wishing you were dead. If this is how it's going to be." But clearly that smile on her face meant she wasn't going anywhere.

He stopped. Clearly he wasn't going anywhere either, literally or figuratively. "There is nothing ******** wrong with the way I eat and I don't appreciate being constantly treated like a ******** child over it. We can't all be natural fatasses like your girlfriend." Instant regret. Instant regret. Instant, huge regret.

Maebe hadn't stopped until he'd said the magic words that he'd instantly regretted. She stopped, a few steps ahead of him, and remained facing the opposite direction as she just considered what she was supposed to do here. She took out her phone, and quickly began to tap on the screen. She did not turn back to him, even though her words - which were thin, tense, and devoid of any amusement - were meant for him. "Give me a reason not to send this."

He didn't know what it was, but he felt sure that he did not, in fact, want her to send it. And that was beside the point, anyway. "I probably deserve it," he said, startlingly meek and abruptly tired. "Even though I really, really did not ********' mean that."

"Since when do you say things you don't mean." She still refused to look at him. "Every time you've insulted me, or spited me, or tried to hurt me, you've done it with clear intentions. You expect me to believe that you're suddenly the kind of person who doesn't mean to hurt people? Because, I've got news for you, Obadiah. That's a hard sell."

"That was all you, though. I don't want to hurt her. Not even as collateral damage."
