Shrill X led the way down the hall, stopped for a second to mutter to herself and remember where everything was, took a left and found the door that lead out into the side garden. A quick peek outside revealed the area to be empty, though voices could be heard from the back where the main party was taking place. Alright, they were alone. No need to worry about looking tough.

“Okay, look,” Shrill said as soon as Hard Truths had joined her, “I don’t actually want to fight you, so how about we say we did and actually just go back to my place and fool around?” Shrill grinned hopefully and then frowned, quickly backtracking. “Or just go home and not fool around, since you seem to have issues with that or whatever, I don’t really care.”

She sat down on the cobblestones. “We’ll call it a draw. Don’t go telling everyone you won because you didn’t.” There we go, that should fix that. There didn’t need to be a scene and she could get through the night without Lullaby’s stern look of ultimate disapproval. Well, she’d probably get that anyway to be honest. He hadn’t looked too pleased after her third drink.

"'Not really want to fight'?" he repeated. "You mean all that bluster back there was just talk?" Truths asked, his voice saturated with sarcasm. "Surprise, surprise. Just like when you claimed you were going to jump from that tree. And you weren't even drunk, then." With a weary sigh, he put a hoof to his temples as if he were suffering from a migraine.

"I don't know what you mean, exactly, by 'fool around'," he admitted, "But there's an error in your brilliant plan. I should think it quite obvious to anyone who knows my name that I don't lie. That includes saying I did things I didn't do, even if we were to claim the fight ended in a draw." There were always loopholes and other ways to get around that, but he didn't want her to go around getting even more ideas. The ones she had were quite enough.

He frowned at her, but for once it wasn't disapproving so much as one of concern. "What happened back there, anyway? You were clearly goading me on purpose and now you've done a complete one-eighty. Did you really think I'd back off?" He raised a brow. "I thought you knew me better than that. We're too alike for our own good, you and I." He huffed. "Well, in some ways."

"I was going to jump from that tree!" Shrill X protested, her cheeks turning slightly red. "Hey, I’m just trying to take the high road here and you know, not beat someone up at my own family gathering. Come on, even I’m not that bad and my sister would probably be disappointed with me." She rubbed at a hoof through her hair, looking away.

But her discomfort was somewhat dissolved by his admittance that he didn't know what she meant and she snorted. "Do you know anything at all? Fool around, you know like-" She shut her own mouth that time. He probably wouldn't appreciate the idea anyway, even if she was a totally awesome lay and he was missing out big-time. "Just because your name has ‘truth’ in it, doesn’t mean you can’t lie. That’s stupid. Everyone lies. Just don’t’ say anything then, just nod and look tough and I’ll do the talking."

The concern was unexpected and she looked away uncomfortably. "Nothing. I was just talking big. My mouth runs away from me sometimes and I can’t stop it." She stared past him with a frown. "Belldandy was all crying and s**t, I was sure you wouldn’t want to upset her any more by actually fighting. You’re really a big softie, right?"

"And you didn't because...?" he asked, clearly disbelieving. "I made it too safe for you? Right; of course. That must have been it. Stupid me." The reddening of Shrill's complexion did not escape Truths' notice. He said no more on the matter.

"Wait, wait, wait - your sister?" This time, the inquiring tone in his voice was genuine. He thought back and remembered she was looking for some phony named Singsong. Could that have been the sister she'd meant? He hardly had time to ponder it over before she was going on about 'fooling around' again. Only she cut herself off. Since when did that happen?! He cast her an incredulous look.

"Not everyone lies," the unicorn protested. "Just because you don't think it's possible doesn't mean it isn't. Sure, it can be hurtful to lie to people, but when you don't give a damn about what people think of you, much less 'manners' or 'politeness' or 'tact', it becomes fairly easy to be brutally honest. I'm actually surprised you yourself haven't experienced that liberty. I mean, you certainly don't seem to like giving off the impression that you care what others think of you." Even if she did. Just like him. Took one to know one; that's why he knew. The mention of her sister just confirmed it.

Upon hearing her suggestion, Truths actually grinned. "Sorry, I don't think that's going to work, either. I'll probably start cracking up the minute you open your mouth." Softening when he saw the mare look away, his smile faded and he tilted his head.

"Hmph. You can say that again," he muttered in response to the mention of her mouth. But his eyes widened at the mention of Belldandy crying, quickly followed by a resentful snort, a toss of his mane, and a stomp of his hoof on the ground. "I am no such thing!" ...Was that a lie? He didn't want to think about it. He just wouldn't try to decipher Shrill's idea of the term 'big softie'.

Lowering his head from having stuck his nose up so high into the air, he calmed himself before asking, "...Was that her name, the little one? Belldandy?"

“Obviously…” Shrill X muttered, but she wasn’t going to fight the point too much because she had chickened out that day, she just wasn’t going to admit it.

Now she definitely looked unhappy, as if some deep dark secret had somehow been revealed. “Yeah, I got a sister.” She said gruffly. Singsong was the only person she was really afraid of disappointing. Her soft, sweet sister wouldn’t like knowing Shrill was getting into unnecessary fights and making kids cry.

“Of course I know what it’s like to be honest and not give a damn and all that stuff, but sometimes it’s just easier to lie. Ya know, instead of having to explain or look like a loser. I bet you lie all the time, you just pretend to be all high and mighty.” She would bet money on how much of a hypocrite he really was, especially if they were supposed to be ‘just like each other’.

She rolled her eyes. “Then I guess we’re just going to tell them we came outside and talked like a bunch of losers.” She’d have to cause some other trouble later on so everyone could forget about this incident entirely.

Now she finally smiled back, even adding a poke of the tongue. “You are too.” She looked somewhat more satisfied with the conversation, even relaxing into a nonchalant shrug when he asked about Belldandy’s name. “I think that’s right but I’ve got so many cousins, aunts, uncles, second twice removed whatever whatevers I could be wrong.”

"Well, good for you. What's wrong with having a sister?" the gruff unicorn demanded. "I've never really had family - well, save for one crazy foal who insisted we were brothers - but a sister would have been nice."

Truths' mouth contorted into another amused expression, as if he was fighting hard not to allow that previously straight line to split into a smile. "The point isn't to choose the easiest path," he said. "You won't learn anything from that. If I were one of those silly unicorns who used magic for everything simply because it was easy, I wouldn't know how to do a lot of things I do now."

He frowned again. "If you don't explain, sometimes you look even more like a loser. Others start to misunderstand you and your intentions and reasons for doing things. It becomes a giant mess." Looking away, he added, "I don't really have anyone to worry about regarding disappointment. But you - can you live with knowing your family has the wrong idea about you?"

Going over to the mare, he rammed her in the side with an elbow. "You twit! There is nothing bad about talking things out! It takes more of a phony to do that than to fight or lie. A real loser is an idiot who would care so much about what others thought of them that they made up stories instead of told the truth just because it was easier." He heaved another sigh. "Look at it this way. Would your sister be more impressed by hearing about some fight you had, or by hearing that you actually learned to settle things peacefully?"

A guttural sound like a warning growl emitted deep from Truth's throat and his eyes narrowed at the display of Shrill's tongue. "Am not! And don't you go telling anyone else that, either! I can still wipe the floor with you, you know." Exhaling deeply and relaxing his tense muscles, he tried to recompose himself. "I simply...have other sides to me is all. Same as you. Or anyone else."

Then he seemed thoughtful. "You said that name so easily, I have a feeling you're more sure of it than you're letting on. You probably pay attention and care more than you want others to know. I'm betting you just added that part about having so many relatives just to throw me off." He shook his head and nudged her along back the way they came. "Come on. You're missing your own family get-together. They'll notice if you're not around. Heaven forbid the party get too peaceful or quiet."

“Nothing is wrong with having a sister. I didn’t say there was!” She just didn’t want to make it too obvious that her weakness was her sister, even if the second he saw them in the same room together it would be obvious. “You can make your own family, dude. You don’t have to be blood. Hell, I’ll be your sister if you want. Not that you’d probably want me for that.”

Shrill X sighed, big and loud. “I don’t need to learn stuff. I just wanna have fun and be cool and just ‘cause there are unicorns who use magic all the time, doesn’t mean they’re lazy. Earth Phony’s can be lazy little shits too. If you’ve got a talent you should use it; you just like to make life difficult for yourself.”

She scuffed lightly at the ground with her hoof. This conversation was hitting far to close to home now. It was making her actually think about her life and her behaviour. “They can misunderstand me all they want but the people who really matter know the truth. I’m not going to change just to suit them all.” Mess seemed to be her speciality, but she knew in her heart that no matter how many lies or how complicated it all became, her sister and the rest of her close family understood she meant well in the end.

“Oi!” She squawked when he rammed her with his elbow, immediately shoving him back. “I’m not a ‘talking about my feelings’ sissy. You can do that all you want and brag about how wise and thoughtful you are, but I’m a girl of action.” She gave him another shove for when he mentioned her sister but didn’t answer, she only frowned. Yeah, sure, Singsong and the rest of her family would congratulate her for talking instead of fighting, but the thought of it was oddly embarrassing.

Trigger warning: big softie. Shrill X made a big mental post-it-note in her mind for that one, her face splitting into a wide grin. “I won’t tell a soul,” she lied.

Shrill X stood, shrugging again. “Think what you want.” Though she had to admit he was surprisingly astute. “You’re right though. I bet everyone is getting way bored.” Rather than go back through the door, she took a step towards where the main outside area was in full swing. “I’m gonna snag something from the buffet. Wanna come?”

Smirking at Shrill's offer, Truths cocked his head to regard her. "You've got it wrong. I act the way I do for a number of reasons. One is to keep other phonies at bay - especially the fake, shallow, happy-go-lucky ones." He briefly made a face. "Another, though, is to separate them from the ones worth getting to know. And, I suppose, befriending."

Rolling his eyes, he continued, "Those phonies are few and far in-between. But if, despite my constantly giving you a hard time, you would offer to be my 'sister', I don't know how I could refuse. After all, you evidently trust me enough to admit your flaws such as your runaway big mouth." He bowed his head slowly and respectfully to her. "I both admire and appreciate that sort of courage and trust."

He hesitated a bit at her words regarding those who might have misunderstood her. Opening his mouth, he closed it again, speechless for a minute. Then he gave a harsh laugh. "'Those who really matter know the truth', huh? Like the saying 'those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." He was outright grinning, now. "A mare after my own heart. Now that's not something you find every day."

After he had spent so long trying to explain to Mooncake why he didn't act 'nicer' or more sociable just to please other phonies, Shrill X had pretty much summed it all up in explaining herself. That was exactly why he (sometimes purposefully) came off like as a hard-hearted jerk to others, but he never would have imagined some other phony might have understood his reasoning. Maybe Shrill wasn't mean to others on purpose, but she still refused to change how she acted just for the sake of others.

Truths caught his balance as he was shoved back, snickering. "Oh, really? Maybe that'll change once you get a few more drinks in you," he jeered at her claim about not talking about her feelings. "'A girl of action'?! More like 'all talk but NO action'. When will you put your money where your mouth is? Your bark is obviously worse than your bite." He tossed his mane. "For the record, I never said anything about me being thoughtful or wise. But if you think so, that's good to know."

Her grin and declaration of 'not telling a soul' caused his smug sneer to disappear immediately. "You'd be spreading lies anyway if you did, because it's not even true!" he hissed. Her invitation toward the buffet gave him pause, though. "I'm not supposed to be here, though. I'm not a part of this family. At least Revenant was kind enough to call me his guest, but what will you do?" Another smirk. "It's all fine and dandy not to care what others think, but if your own family ends up thinking we're dating or something...do you really think you could handle that?"

Shrill X tilted her head and laughed. “You really do like to make things difficult. You’re just like a chick playing hard to get. Treat ‘em, keep ‘em keen, right? What have you got against the happy folks? And the fake and shallow ones are a blast, especially when you ruffle their feathers. But I guess we got different tastes.”

Then she was trying to frown, especially when he bowed his head to her, but her scowl kept shifting into a smile, even when she forced it back. “Whatever. My flaws are pretty obvious, even I can see that. I can admit them when I have to.” Nobody had ever admired her for anything, well her sister said it sometimes, but that was different. It was nice to hear it from somebody else, especially someone who’d been happy to try kick her a** a few minutes ago.

His grin was infectious and she gave up trying to frown at all and just went with the smile. They’d probably fight again, probably very soon and they’d drive each other up the wall every time they met, but at least she’d always know that there was someone out there who actually got her.

“Don’t push it, bucko. I could still lay you flat if I wanted.” Her words had no threat to them now but she tossed her head back proudly anyway and bounced up and down on her hooves, as if ready to go a round.

Shrill X was just about ready to run off and raid the buffet when he asked his final question. “Dude, are you serious? You really don’t know what I meant by fooling around? You didn’t get any vibe from that at all?” With an incredulous snort, she shook her head and turned away. “That aside, I just said I was your sister from another mister. They can all think what they like. It doesn’t bother me. You wouldn’t be a bad catch anyway.”

With a shake of her head she started walking away, her voice still loud and clear. “Should have tried something different, maybe? Roll in the hay, frisky business, bump in the night… that last one is terrible, forget that.”

"I am not like a chick playing hard to get!" he protested, though it sounded hollow even to his own ears. "...Is that really what they do?"

"'Ruffling feathers' is something I could get into," he answered thoughtfully. "But if I don't have to, I don't see the point in wasting time on idiots when there are much more interesting phonies to 'hang about'."

"By 'when you have to' you mean when you're backed into a corner with no way out," Truths corrected, teasing. "Even then, I can't imagine it's in any way easy for you.

"Mmhmm, I'm sure," the unicorn answered, amused despite himself as he watched Shrill bounce in mock preparation for a fight. "But I hope you'll spare this old stallion this one time. I was never as active as you, even as a foal. I might sprain something."

"...Huh?" It seemed he really was still clueless when it came to some terms of lingo. Not that he was ready to let her know that. "O-of course I know! Fooling around like...being silly and wasting time with your antics like a filly!" More than a little embarrassed, he raised his head higher, as if that would make up for his ignorance. "Hmph. Well if you don't care, neither do I. Let's go."

He heard her still talking as he followed after, his brow furrowing as she continued. What was she on about?! He wasn't sure he wanted to know.
