Waving off Boris and Squirrel, America finished off her last drink and swiped two more brownies and a soda before going back to the relative quiet and privacy of her room. She couldn't remember the last time she'd made an actual phone call, if she'd ever even bothered on this phone. Trying to navigate to the calling menu (which was well hidden enough to suggest those who designed them didn't expect much actual calling, either) America chewed a mouthful of brownie with a smile. Soon enough the line was ringing, and it seemed that they did indeed get actual phone service along with the 'net.

It picked up after two rings, but only for a distracted: "Hang on." The beauty of texting was of course that it was always easy to project the idea that he was curled up comfortably in a bed. A minute or so passed in relative silence, broken by the slow climbing noise of rain falling on a roof, and when Taym's voice returned--made still thinner, still quieter by the phone--it was faintly breathless. "Didn't think you'd actually call," he said, mumbled; the click of a lighter, an inhale, and then, more clearly and without preamble: "******** Russia. I miss you."

There was laughter and then a thump accompanied a small catch in her voice as the girl flopped down on the bed. "Of ******** course I'd I call," she chastised with a grin. "I miss you too and I hate talking weather but I haven't been 'bove ground in four days and the rain sounds so nice. Where're you at?" America sounded easy and relaxed as something in her unknotted and relaxed at the familiar sound of his voice. The tie of communication more real and with her than a text a message could ever be.

"Supply shed, out by the fields. There was a charge incident and I'm on fence repair and it started coming down right before you called. Can't decide if it wants to be a nice day or not, keeps changing its mind." A pause, broken by his steadying breathing, and then by the rising and falling sound of the rain. "They locked you in or something? Four days is a long ******** time."

America hummed thoughtfully as she imagined the day, the smell of the training yard as it alternated between rain and sunshine, wet grass and mud. "Sounds like the sort of day you can just open your mouth and take a bite of the air, like a piece of cake. All layers and good things inside." Again a laugh. "Just too busy to go up there; I have a day coming up, though. There's this beautiful little lake within a walk, so I think I'll go swimming. Just imagine it, a swim without monsters waiting or dealing with some awful, ancient pool."

"Setting aside rune diving or mission-related s**t I don't think I've been swimming for..." a long, considering pause, punctuated by a slow exhale. "Seven years? Maybe six. I'm jealous."

"Was a bit sad it wasn't frozen over, I think next time I get to take leave I'm gonna go somewhere I can get a good skate in," her voice was wistful, but the brightness that had been there since he'd first spoken had yet to dim. "I'll take pictures, 'cause it's like some kinda fairytale place." There was a pause and then a wry little snort, "Though let's ******** hope not really, I'd like my day off to not involve fighting weird s**t. You should go swimming. If it's been that long, I bet it'll be even better than you remember."

"Why is it like a fairytale place? I always picture Russia kinda ugly, to be honest. D'you get those tacky sunrises ******** the minarets and cupolas on the ******** horizon, or something?" A pause, and then, indulgent: "Been reading a lot of Melville. Isn't it awful?" He said it like you'd say "isn't it great?"

"It's just kind of perfect, like it's all round and ringed with trees, and on the day I arrive there wasn't any wind, so it was like a door to the sky." The description of Russia had her smiling but it was the word erubescent that had America giggling. "I don't understand a ******** bit of that and half sounded just sideways of dirty. I haven't got a chance to see the cities, though. Boris offered, but like hell I'm gonna waste my personal days on him trying to show off. I'll need to go though, how many nesting dolls do you think your shelves can take? I'm gonna get you one of those hats too, keep those ears warm so they don't fall off if we get sent to Antarctica."

"It's called an ushanka," he said, snooty. "I'll have you know I look damn good in an ushanka. Probably better than Boris looks. Does something about those ********' ears."

"I ******** love those ears," she complained, offended on their behalf and refraining from the obvious handlebar joke. "I'll get Tubs a teenie one so you two can have a little matching fashion show."

"Oh god. He's so ********' cute, America. I think the cats are getting jealous. He steps over the little hurdles now like it's nothing, too. He really does do that standing up and looking thing every time someone walks by the door. I hope you feel awful for abandoning us."

"Oh noooo..." she cooed and rolled over onto her stomach, legs kicking a bit in the air. Then calling out a little louder, "Momma misses her Tubby Lovey!" A pause and then a chagrined, "...you're not in your room." The sound of suppressed giggling, "So you'll just have to tell him that when you get in. Those exact words too, be sure to get my voice right."

"They already got real concerned over him when I started yelling over facial hair. I may have given a lecture." There was a pause as someone did indeed knock on her door, and muffled voices could be heard, America's audibly exasperated until she gave a loud, "Go to bed," and shut the door, hard."It's all one big shared bathroom and shower area, okay," she began suddenly after flopping down dramatically onto the bed with a sigh. "So I wasn't in there to be a creep, just take a pee and go. But while I was in the stall, Romeo walked out of the showers talking to himself and primping. I decided to let him have his little moment and just wait it out."
