People have a way of turning up when you're thinking about them.

He wasn't sure exactly what it was that had put him in mind of Molly--he thought, possibly, that the thought of the laundry he still needed to do (and he held off on doing laundry, not because he dreaded it but to save it up as a personal reward, because the process of folding and sorting afterwards was inevitably soothing, a thing to be done meticulously, a reminder that he owned things now, things that he could take care of and that he could stow away in a room that was his own, a room that was clean and tidy) had reminded him of the outsized sweater hanging in the closet, a sweater he still crawled into when he was especially cold, a sweater he occasionally, if he felt relatively certain that he would not be rousted out of bed at an odd hour, slept in.

Regardless, the thought had been planted, and he'd chased it as much as he was ever comfortable chasing an idle thought, first through a hope that she was OK (a reassuring murmur from Fiona that she'd been on Twitter and that she was, besides, so well-loved that any bad news would travel fast) and onwards to an idle musing of what it was that she might be up to.

And then: of course. He almost stopped short in the second floor hallway, his key already in hand, as he realized that Molly's name should have already been added to the mental list he'd been carefully curating and not acting on. He really should, he thought, call her. He'd send her a text, maybe, after he got back to his room.

People have a way of turning up when you're thinking about them, but he didn't know that yet. There were boxes in the hallway, and he couldn't see their owner--the door was open, or maybe they were on the stairs. Hopefully the latter, he thought, not particularly wanting to spend an afternoon helping some stranger move but finding himself feeling obligated to, nonetheless, call tentatively towards the boxes: "You need any help?"

SORRY THIS TOOK SO LONG crying
PostPosted: Sun Jul 27, 2014 12:37 pm

As Molly carted boxes from her downstairs room to her new room on the second floor, she let her mind wander and reflected on how much she had been wanted to earn this right for quite some time. Still, Molly wasn't quite happy with her promotion mission, despite the fact that her group was okay and it had been a success despite what they found. It couldn't be helped anymore though, could it? She also didn't want to demean any accomplishment, because it had been a long time, and she had finally did it...

It felt weird. It felt really weird to have done something for herself.

The now full hunter continued to mull this over, day dreaming as she made her way back up the stairs with a box of baking supplies. Luckily she didn't own much, so the moving part was pretty smooth for the most part...though before she took her stuff into her room she did need to clean it!

Molly let out a squeak as she made it to the top of the stairs and heard a voice call out. "Are you talking to me--" Wait. Oh gosh! That voice sounded familiar! "OBADIAH?" Molly just lit up once she saw the Hunter on the second floor, and she beamed at him. "Hello! Oh! It's so good to see you! It's been a while! How are you?"

Too long...when was the last time she saw him...? Molly wasn't sure she wanted to ponder that, because the answer was too long, and she immediately felt horrible.

"Molly Finn," said Taym, with a rare, genuine grin, suffused with quiet pleasure at the idea that anyone, even chronically-cheerfully Molly, might light up like that as a result of his presence. "I see we're sort of neighbors," he added, jingling his key and indicating, with a sweep of his arm, the new coat--now branded, not with scythes, but with upturned crescent moons. He half-jogged to meet her, holding out his arms in silent offer to take the box. "Congratulations. You need any help?"

"Neighbors!" She echoed cheerfully. "Oh, that's so wonderful!" As Taym approached, Molly shifted the box to one arm, and misinterpreted his open arms gesture as a 'hug' indicator. She wrapped one of her arms around his way too skinny waist, and squeezed affectionately before she released him. "What room are you in? Ah, thank you so much! Congratulations to you as well!" She cheered, and then stared at him with her head tilted as she waited for a response.

Wait for it...

Wait...

It took Molly a few moments.

"OH MY GOSH!" She gasped, and her free hand reached up to cover her mouth briefly. "You made it to full Hunter!" Because the last time she had spoken to Taym, aside from it being Christmas, was also on the Twitters oh so long ago, when he had been promoted to an intermediate. Wow. It really had been a long time. Too long. "CONGRATULATIONS! Oh my gosh!" She looked down at the box tucked under her arm, and then back at Taym. "As soon as I'm settled in, I'm going to--" A pause. She was going to make him cupcakes but....but Noemi said...she said they were the worst. Molly suddenly sobered up. "I was going to say 'make you some cupcakes' but um...someone said they weren't good so...maybe that isn't a good idea..." Molly was taking it too hard and it wasn't even true, they had all been under an induced rage during that mission.

"They told you what?" he asked, aghast enough to distract him from the fact that he was still feeling exposed and antsy at the unexpected hug although, to his credit, he'd managed to not physically cringe this time. He was learning. "You should," he informed her solemnly, "have a lot of pity for that person, because it must be an enormous trial going through life without functional tastebuds."

"They um...said they were the worst..." Molly couldn't distinguish between truth and saying things out of anger. She gasped as Taym, in a very fancy way she thought, complimented her. Very fancy. "Oh goodness..." The wheels in her head were turning. "You think she has broken taste buds?" Poor Noemi! Maybe she couldn't taste anything! The poor thing, no wonder she was so mad! "Bless her heart...!" Molly pondered on this for quite a while before she snapped out of it, because Taym was right in front of her.

"Ah! Sorry!" She smiled sheepishly. "But um...I'm going to put this box down, because it's the last one from my old room, and then I'm going to clean...but um...if you have some time and if you don't mind, I'd love to hear how you've been doing and what you've been up to, Obadiah!" That being said, she stepped around him and placed the last box on top of the other boxes, and started to roll up her sleeves to start cleaning.

"Do you need any help? Or cleaning supplies. I can pay you back for that mop you let me borrow ages ago," he added. And then, Taym did something that he did not do very often, and probably would not have done for very many people besides Molly. He volunteered personal information, and not just that but he did it out of a sense of dim personal pride, a boyishly eager desire to show off for an appreciative audience. "You haven't met my roommates yet, have you? You'd like them. Your type, I think."

One thing that did not change about Molly was this sense she'd be bothering others by asking for help, so as always, she cheerfully and politely declined. "Oh no, thank you so much for offering though, Obadiah! I really appreciate it though! I'm sure you have better things to do than to clean someone else's new room!"

She picked up her bucket full of cleaning supplies along with her broom and mop, and tilted her head as she stilled. "Oh! No, I haven't!" She didn't even know he had room mates, much less who they could be. "Oh? Well, if they're room mates of yours, I'm sure I'd love them! So I'd love to meet them!" She paused. "When would be a good time for you?"

"They're at home right now," he said, gesturing over his shoulder with his thumb. "I'll just run and grab them. This is good timing," he added, "because they ********' love boxes."

On that cryptic note he turned to jog for his room before she'd have a chance to protest, and when he returned a few minutes later it was with a cat in each arm: svelte, pantherine, with glossy black fur and gently-gleaming golden eyes that gazed through slitted, skeptical eyelids in the universally accepted feline expression of "who the ******** are you?" Between them was a furry black rope: a shared tail, with a strange cowlick in the middle where the fur ran one way, only to stop and start running the other. One of them narrowed its eyes still further and exhaled a polite and disinterested purr; the other perked its ears and gazed with sudden alertness at box box box, but neither of them made any move to escape Taym's arms. He was presenting them exactly like a little boy with a new puppy, right down to the slightly-paternal beam.

"Konstantin Bashmet," he informed her, "made the decision that I ought to have a cat, and Russians never do things by half measures except cook, so he brought me two. Or maybe it's one. I actually don't know how it works, still. Anyway: god bless Konstantin Bashmet, but only sometimes and mostly where it pertains to cats."

"O-oh! Only if it isn't a bother!" She called after him, but he was gone. Molly stood there awkwardly with her cleaning supplies before realizing she should at least put them into her room. So she did, and came back out, waiting patiently outside her door. Of course, at first, Molly was thinking his room mates were other hunters, who happened to love boxes, so when he came back without any humans in tow, but instead two cats in his arms, Molly gasped, and then just squealed. She cupped her hands to the sides of her face. "Oh my gosh, they are so cute and pretty!" She gushed, absolutely enthralled and delighted by the sight of them. "Ahh! What are their names?" She kept looking between the two of them and Taym, her smile just face splitting.

"Oh yeah? That's so nice of Kostya!" Molly just looked as pleased as punch and incredibly happy for for Taym...and she oh so badly wanted to pet them too.

"Oh!" Molly straightened "Here!" She turned around and then crouched, moving forward to push all of her boxes at the same time into her room. She kept pushing them until they were in the middle of the new room, and then prompt started to dump some stuff out of them. All so that the cats could play with them.

He recognized that "oh please let me pet them" look, as a cat lover, but before he could offer she was busily setting up a feline amusement park.

"Now you have to let me help you clean up," he said. "This is my fault. Although I'm sure they'll be deeply appreciative," he added, stooping (this movement came easier than it had when she'd first met him, less creaky, less accompanied by the suggestion that he might snap through the middle) to deposit both of them.

They moved in an easy tandem, the linked tail apparently no hardship, and set to a cautious investigation. "Their names are Quint and Jessel, and that is the god's honest truth even if America Jones tries to tell you that their names are Bootsie and Tootsie. They can stay out for a half hour," he said, pulling out his phone to set a conservative alarm, "but we won't be in your hair for that long, I promise. I know you're busy. You should get one of the carriers," he added, "and bring a favored Cannon Cat up here. They get along pretty well with America's treat, I'm sure they wouldn't mind the cannon cats. There could be playdates." Shameless.

Molly waved a hand. "Oh goodness, it's not trouble, really!" She emptied out a few more boxes and just let some of them flop over or stay upright. Taym's easier movement did not go unnoticed, and a C-shaped smile curved Molly's lips as she stayed crouching. Her elbows rested on her knees and her hands cupped her chin as her gaze shifted from Taym to the cats. That connecting tail was rather curious, but she supposed it wasn't any more odd than a cat with wings.

"Quint and Jessel~" She repeated, watching them, and then giggled. "I've met Miss America recently and played ball with her! She's wonderful!" Also hearing something like Bootsie and Tootsie sounded like her too. "Ah, alright!" Molly nodded her head and waved a hand again. "It's no problem, really!"

Her eyes briefly left the cats to glance at Taym again. "Ah...I did have one for a week...but I never applied for a permenant one..." Her brows knitted in thought. "Ah, playdates!" She echoed, eyes going wide. "I'd love that! I'd need to be fair to all of them though, and take them out for their own play date each!"

99 play dates.

Taym would be fine with that.

He fell silent for a second, watching the cats in fond silence before giving himself a shake, abruptly remembering why it was that he'd been thinking about Molly.

"I, uhm." He hesitated. "I guess your schedule's going to be a little more packed as a consequence of your promotion, but I--was actually thinking of sending you a text some time soon, if I didn't run into you. Serendipitous," he observed, twisting the hem of his sleeve in his fingers, restless. "I'm working on a project, and it's still sort of a... preliminary ******** stage, right now, but anyway: if you could spare some time for it I think you're exactly the kind of person whose help would be invaluable." Butter 'em up, even though, to be fair, it was true.

Molly was pretty enthralled with watching the cats, still crouching, still resting her head in her hands upon her knees.

She didn't look at Taym right away as he spoke, but she finally could tear her eyes away from the cute box cats to give him her attention. She tilted her head, looking like she was following along thus far but uncertain that he thought she would be in any way helpful to whatever he was doing.

"Ah! Of course! Anything for you, Obadiah! I'd love to help out in anyway I can for whatever you need! I mean...you...really think I'm qualified to help...though?" Surely there were way more talented hunters than her that were worth his time. She was terribly curious though, as to what he was up to, and how he thought she could help.

"I can't think of anyone better, but it's a huge favor so please, please," he emphasized, "if it's something you're not comfortable with or don't want to do, don't just suck it up. Just tell me."

He hesitated, and then knelt also, partly to get on the same level and partly to torment one of the cats with a scrap of packing tape while he talked, sticking it onto its paw and watching it perplexedly attempt to shake it off. "I'm working on a project with Camille Ryland, for Edith. Newbie training. Most of it's just a question of getting printed materials out there to fresh depods but people listen harder and retain it better if it's face-to-face," he said, with a skeptical tone as though he did not personally believe this but was repeating something that had been repeatedly told to him. "We're trying to get together a list of people who are good contacts for settling in on the Island. I'd like to put you on that list."

And there was another question, too, but he held it back, waiting to gauge her reaction to the project as a whole, without looking at her at all. Suddenly shy.
