Roan never really stood out as a child, while his family was known and respected, he hadn't done anything to truly bring attention to himself. His mother Marie Morsair had once been a medic on the field until her leg was shattered by a shot from a high impact sniper rifle. Now she was a decently known and respected doctor within the wall, her leg having never fully recovered from the injury.
When Roan was enlisted at the age of 8 he had one particular trait which did set him out from the others. He was a runt, a few inches shorter than all of the others, yet he didn't seem daunted by this fact in the slightest. If anything he was must faster, and due to his mother's influence and watching her, he was actually quite aware of the human body even at a young age. As such, when one of the kids thought it was a good idea to pick on him because they were larger, they weren't expecting to be severely outmatched. That and the fact that the little unassuming Roan, was truly a berserker by nature when fighting.
Roan was secluded for a few weeks after, undergoing psychiatric evaluations to ensure he would not be a threat to his fellow recruits. It was determined that while he does go berserk in a situation where he believes his life is threatened, he is fully capable of discerning friend from foe. As such he was re-admitted into the recruitment program. There he met the person who would become his closest companion and friend, one who accepted him fully for what he was and even respected it.
An alien, a Drezz by the name of Yesenia had been attempting to obtain a partner, but not a single child would dare approach her given her naturally intimidating nature. Literally twice his age, and easily twice his height, a known predator, one could easily be intimidated by such a creature. Yet he saw past all that, if she was here, admitted by the den to become a parner with a recruit, she obviously was safe to do so. After all, he was thought a threat after his little display, but even he was avoided now by many of the children, not that he minded it at all. Without a second thought he approached, yet she hadn't noticed him, so in a clever little thought he reached up and proceeded to climb up her back. Using her carapace as leverage he poked her cheek when she noticed him and smiled.
From that point forward they trained as compeer partners, having spent the first eight years training when they were given their avocation he wasn't at all surprised. Soldier, or more specifically, medic, given his background it was the most logical choice. He learned from his mother during his training and over the following ten years he's spent within the Den.
Sadly, if there were one thing Roan would change about himself, it's his height. While his parner "Nia" stood nearly 7'6", he barely reached 5'6". Given such a difference however, his habit of climbing onto her back as a child never wore off, and even now he is known to climb onto her back as she charges through the battlefield. And in truth, they are a frightening sight to behold.
