Name: “Merry” Mahyra
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Rank: Candidate
Appearance: Merry is not what one would call sexy or alluring. At 5’5” she’s a roughly average height, and her naturally heavy, broad-shouldered build gives her a “sturdy” appearance. Her throat and jaw cling to fat, so even at her fittest her strong, square jaw gives a vague impression of jowls. Merry’s nose is crooked due to childhood misadventures, and she has large ears that are emphasized by the extremely short layer of black fuzz she sports on her head as a result of Candidate hair requirements.

Perhaps Merry’s most notable features are her skin and curves. Her skin is a rich brown, one of the darkest in her family; she likes to claim that it’s the result of all the mud baths she took as a child. Merry also possesses a large bosom. Even when bound – a frequent necessity with the demands of a Candidate’s life – she will never appear flat, especially since she finds flattening them too uncomfortable. When she sets her chest free, she gets a secret amusement of smooshing people - especially short people - to her chest with hugs; the awkward squirmers are hilarious. She also has wide "child-bearing" hips and a cushy rear that would look disproportionate if not for her chest and overall build.

Speaking of, Merry has a personality that is visible. She is self-confident and upbeat, meaning she is prone to happy smiles and an assured but comfortable posture. While not a physical beauty, her personality and confidence might make her attractive, or at least memorable.

Personality: (Boisterous, confident, motherly, forgiving, unambitious, gullible)
Merry isn’t called “merry” out of irony or spite. She is very positive and happy, full of easy smiles and loud laughs. She has a remarkable lack of self-consciousness for her age, and will not only dance and sing in front of people (despite having a bad singing voice), she’s not afraid to be the first or only to do so. She’s very talkative and loves gossip, and will just as happily chat up the Weyrleader as she will the cooks or drudges.

Being the oldest of five children, Merry has a strong mother hen tendencies. She will fuss over your hair and clothes and scratches, often without so much as a by-your-leave. If you’re sick she’ll want to feed you soup and fluff your pillows, and if you’re sad, skinny, lonely, or just in her general vicinity, she’ll try to feed you. Merry loves food and wants to share her love with others.

Speaking of sharing love, Merry wants to be everyone’s friend. Even if you don’t want to be her friend. Especially if you don’t want to be her friend. Merry is of the opinion that enough bubbly pies and hugs should cure everything, including various anti-social tendencies, and that the more friends people have, the better the world will be. Merry will eventually give up if her attempts are rebuked frequently/rudely enough, but it may take a while, and she’ll likely go into a short depression. You… don’t want pies and friends? This makes her sad and clashes with her outlook on life, so she’ll need time to process and recover.

Merry will take a firm stand for what she believes in, and is not afraid to be a tattle tale if necessary. She is not a fighter, but has been known to use her physically impose herself between people to separate them. She does get angry more easily than she’d like, but rather than punch or yell, Merry resorts to less aggressive tactics; no more pies for you. She’s bad at holding grudges though, and forgives easily.

Unfortunately - or fortunately, depending on who you are - Merry is unambitious. She’s not a schemer, and while she may find herself in a leadership position by dint of her personality, she doesn’t actively seek to lead. She’s not a long-term planner, and purposefully putting down others or putting them in harm’s way is something she would have serious trouble with. Recognizing personal space/boundaries can be a struggle for her, and Merry is not book-smart. Her love of people also means that Merry is gullible, and her quickness to forgive means she can be taken advantage of multiple times before she finally puts her foot down.

History: Merry was born to Malhon and Nakyra, the oldest of five siblings. She also has one older half-brother - Malkor - the product of her father’s first marriage. Her father had married young to his teenage sweetheart Tinuia. Her parents hadn’t wholly approved since Malhon was poorer than they liked, but agreed because she was already pregnant. She died in childbirth, but Malkor survived. Tinuia’s parents then politely distained Malhon, blaming him for the loss of their daughter, and had a large influence on Malkor’s early childhood, spoiling him.

Malhon had became withdrawn after Tinuia’s death, working long days and drinking at night. His parents eventually had enough and decided to kill two tunnelsnakes at once: they arranged for him to marry Nakyra. Nakyra was a kind but homely young woman, and the middle child of a family Malhon’s parents owed a great favor/debt to. Nakyra turned out to be hiding a firm will, and when Merry was born she used it to get Malhon to stop drinking.

One thing Merry’s mother couldn’t get in the way of though was Malhon’s love and sense of obligation to Malkor. Malkor spent most of his time with his maternal grandparents, and when he did visit home he’d brag about how he’d be a dragonrider. A Search happened at the Hold while Malkor was 11, but he wasn’t chosen. Angry and disappointed, Malkor impulsively decided that he wanted to become a Wherhandler, and demanded his father give him enough money so that if necessary he could bribe his way to a good Wher egg.

Merry’s family was never rich, and finances became tight when Malkor made his demands. Nakyra was steadfast though, and Merry was a boisterous but responsible young girl, herding her younger siblings and helping her parents as best she could. When she was old enough to not be an underfoot nuisance, she often accompanied her mother to the kichens and learned to cook. Merry fully expected to get married, have a passel of kids, and cook for the rest of her life, a vision she was quite content with, so she was surprised when she was Searched at 11.

She knew many dragons and riders had died recently, making her Search a tad frightening. The Dragonplague had peetered out, but what if it came back? Would she Impress, only for her new partner to fall sick and die? It was a scary thought, and as she stood for impression the first time she worried throughout the Hatching. Not Impressing actually put her mind at ease some, and she decided that she didn't need to worry as much. The idea of Impressing became a vague "what-if," and Merry decided to focus on more immediate things. What little free time she had was spent in the creche, comforting and playing with the children, many of whom had parents - known or unknown - die recently.

Between her blatantly feminine personality and her slight pudginess, Merry was considered a less-desirable squire. She was eventually taken on by an intrigued rider from the unrespected 5-1 wing. She was picked not for her math or organization skills, which were lacking, but for her attitude. She didn't look down on the 5-1 wing - in fact, she often expressed amazement at their "number smarts" - was always happy to run errands, and looked after both rider and dragon, making sure they didn't forget to eat, bathe, etc while working on complicated projects. Her squiremaster quickly figured out that while Merry wasn't good at numbers, she was great with names, so in addition to typical squire duties, Merry was made to learn as many names and faces as possible.

The turns continued to pass, and the chances of Merry aging out increased. While Merry has developed a "what will be will be" attitude about Impressing, her rider is still hoping Merry gets a dragon, having grown fond of the girl and wanting to see what sort of rider she'd make (and what sort of dragon would choose her!).
