I think the main reason why the first set of items are so lame is because Gaia doesn't want people to sink gold to then sell the items they receive for more gold. SInce the items are pretty lame, there won't be much demand for them, and also, since they are items received for sinking relatively small amounts of gold, many people will have them. Those wings those eek they will make people want to sink loads of gold just for them. The only problem with them is that people can resell them for lots more since there will be a small percentage of Gaians who can afford to get them straight from the gold sink.

If I'm reading this correctly, this is for more than items. It's for the manga, which people have been asking for for a really long time. That may be why the global amount is so much higher than what the beach party was at the same point in it's lifespan.
