Breakfast was a fairly lively event at the training compound, there were still a lot of faces he didn't even begin to recognize. The long line of tables, and various faces sitting hurriedly eating their meal before the days training would begin within the hour. Trainees had spent the morning cleaning the dorms, and straightening everything into just the perfect order. Still tired yet, but mostly alert Alec grabbed his food tray shuffling in his half asleep stupor. He recognized from the crowd a familiar face, Preacher.
Granted, he was still a bit perplexed by the fact the other magically had well, breasts. The first couple times they had interacted and leading up to the night of drinking with the fellows, so understandably he was a bit confused. It wasn't like she was that overly endowed but it defiantly had thrown him off. Instead of making a big deal over the situation, he quietly sat beside the other giving a small little nod. He wasn't exactly going to throw it in Preachers face, the others gender didn't change his friendship. The lie wasn't offensive, and could be easily overlooked. "Hey, good mornin' Pe-- " He almost used the nickname he'd assigned the other but instead quickly finished with the correct name.
He still hadn't quiet gotten use to the straps of his uniform. They were tight in some places and lightly dug into his clothing. It wasn't too bad, just something he'd have to adjust too.
"Preacher." The teen rubbed at his eye trying to perk up some before the morning wore on any further. Picking at his morning meal he gazed across the banquet hall before looking back at his friend. He easily could have sat with his house Falke, or some one else but he hadn't had a chance to talk with Preacher since their enlisting and wanted a chance to catch up with the cheeky b*****d. Even with the gender confusion, he still was fond of the other and the brash mannerisms that made up the other.
Before he could open his mouth again to talk, or add anything further the early morning Courier came around delivering mail. Once in the morning, and once at dinner time. Alec usually picked up the afternoon or evening shift depending on what was needed. Much to his surprise a letter was given to him. Along with several others of course, but he wasn't expecting any kind of letter. His mother maybe, but even with his poor letter recognition he knew this wasn't her handwriting on the outside of the letter. Staring at it a bit solemnly he frowned, turning it over once, twice before squinting at the font. It was times like these that were frustrating. Maybe he really would have to force himself to learn having to ask to be read to at 15 wasn't exactly an easy pill to swallow.
It seemed like the Courier also had something for Preacher, dropping a letter in the girls lap, before marching off again to pass on what was owed. "You too huh?" He tapped the letter against the table indicating what he meant.

Mornings were still hard for Preacher. This early to bed and early to rise s**t was annoying, to say the least. In the Eastern Alleyway, her sleeping schedule had shifted regularly, but still... Sighing, she cracked her neck and sauntered into the cafeteria. Snagging a tray of food she had barely plopped down when Alec yawned his way into the seat next to her. "'Lo, Curry. How are ya? Dun think I didn't hear that slip. Pfft." But Preacher's scolding was light-hearted. Alec, as usual, had simply accepted that she was a girl as though it were nothing. While she wasn't a girl prone much to sentiment, she had developed a soft spot for the redhead.
She had barely begun to eat when today's courier swooped through. Surprisingly, they dropped a piece of mail in her lap. Her mouth rounded in shock. No one wrote to her. Who would waste precious paper on her? She touched it gently with one fingertip before lifted it closer to her face. Oh! Henrik.. Preacher glanced at Alec as he tapped his own letter. "Oh! Ya got one from Henrik too! I betcha he misses ya." Preacher had an unnatural fondness for ribbing Alec about possible partners... or his lack thereof. "I wonder iffin we got time ta read these afore pt."

Embarrassment burned his cheeks with a rosy vengeance at Preachers quick quip about the grave digger, and the missing bit. By the Walls his friend was unrelenting in her pursuit to make him find new reasons to sigh and roll his eyes. If it had been anyone else, beside a small handful of people Alec might have gotten annoyed. It took him a long moment, weighing his words for a moment. Judging from the fact only a few of the instructors were missing they had about another 10 or so minutes.
A few weeks had already gone by, mail delivery from as far as Shiganshina took time, they weren't even situated in Trost. The compound was several miles from the nearest large city.
"We have a little time before pt, but uh." He squinted at the letters on the from pretty sure one of them was an H. Maybe. Or a Z, perhaps an I. "I can't read..or write for that matter. It's really confusing when I try." He muttered quietly before chewing on a bite of food. They'd have a little time before needing to hit the fields, but during mid day shift they'd have time in between duties and shift changes, trusting everything went smoothly and operational. "Do..you know how to?" he asked finally. He'd given Preacher the benefit of his non-judgmental demeanor, perhaps she would the same in return. It was going out on a limb, but eventually that barrier had to be broken if he expected to spend the next 3 years around Preacher he figured.

Preacher shot Alec a puzzled glance. It seemed strange that he was obviously so bright yet could not read or write. School was compulsory for all children who were close enough to the Wallsit temples to get it. Preacher had hung around the temple even after her education was technically finished, begging Pastor Hoen to teach her more numbers. As a result, Preacher was actually quite good at anything to do with math, although her own writing suffered.
She shrugged. Not everyone caught on so quickly and while she was more than happy to tease him about Henrik (Alec blushed so easily!), there were some things that would be off limits. Alec was Preacher's good friend, once of the first, and she didn't want to actually hurt him. So instead she just shrugged insteasd of questiong him. "Curry, I kin read it to ya iffin ya want. I got extra lessons from a Wallist when I was a wee kid. Let's go elsewhere though." She looped her hand around his wrist and tugged him out of the cafeteria. She was vaguely afraid Henrik's letter would be inappropriate.

At least the color had left his face, he didn't spend his whole existence red after all. Just a quick moment of frustration Alec hadn't been sure how to convey. It was partly because Preacher was easy for him to get along with. When that puzzled glance came, he merely shrugged his shoulders. She didn't exactly treat him differently even if they had different lives and outlooks. "I did try and learn, but most of my teachers got tired of me writing backwards or scrambled. Dropped out early. Maybe some day I'll take too it properly." He muttered quietly to the golden eyed girl, allowing himself to be led out of the cafeteria by the wrist. Truthfully he thought the worst of himself for it, but didn't bother to add that part.
Standing off to the side, no one fussed them with their trays bused. Alec carefully opened the letter and scanned its contents. He noted the thumb print and coffee smell from it. His tired grumpiness was replaced by excitement. "Go on, read yours first!" he carefully folded the letter addressed to him a bit noisily (at least he could safely assume that was his name.) He nudged the other to open the given letter. If he was impatient sounding it was only because he wanted to hear what was contained in the letters, since she'd agreed to the small request.

Preacher debated simply grabbing Alec's letter first, but instead she just pulled out hers. It was... well, it was a bit dirty. In fact, some gritty dirt simply fell from the letter as she opened it. Huh. Did Henrik write it in a grave? "Curry, lookit. It's got dirt all up in it." She chuckled and shook it out. Chewing her lip, she scanned the lette, then begin to summarize it.
"Well, he says we're right brave n' asks me iffin I've found a nice bosom to rest my head on. Guess I should tell him I'mma girl, ya ken?" Preacher chuckled and read on, then flat out laughed. When she finally regained her breath, she spoke again. "Well, he wants us ta come visit. And he asked me ta.... hahaha ta not kill Axel! Hahahaha! Oh man, I dunno iffin I kin keep such a promise." Preacher held her stomach; it hurt a little from laughing. She didn't really want to kill Axel, but he just made her so... so mad! Carefully, she tucked her letter into her pants pocket.
"C'mon, gimme yours. It better not be fulla gross stuff." she needled, a smirk curving her mouth. Preacher knew very well there was nothing between them. But even mentioning it made Alec protest so funnily...

Smirking at the irony of her being worried it was dirty, and the message its self having extra dirt it was pretty damn funny. Alec couldn't help but to raise an eyebrow in consideration laughing. "I think ya should yea, doesn't like he knows any better. I didn't till the other day." he replied regaining his composer, especially at the bit about her killing Axel. "Nooo! Don't do that. Walls woman" Alec rolled his eyes at her playful antics and passed her the letter when she asked it for it.
"If ya get this done, we'll go put our letters away. Do you..know how to write?" He squinted at Preacher suspiciously, hopeful-like if anything. He knew at least Axel for sure might help, but he was hoping since Preacher was already involved they wouldn't have to involve a 3rd party. Alec was trying very hard not to pay attention to the fact the female was goading him about his possibly liking the man. By the Walls, he shouldn't have told her about the hug they'd exchanged. It had been like fuel to Preachers jarring fire. He gave the other a warning look, he'd purposely announce her nickname, or worse. Talk about her snuggling up to Axel. For Everyone to hear. "PT's soon, come on. Youre the one being gross by the way!" he muttered grinning suddenly. It was better than bursting into blushing flames.
People were slowly beginning to work on busing their trays, and getting up from the tables. They wouldn't have free time until after classes, and during lunch..or perhaps in the evening depending on the others answer to his question.

Preacher read Henrik's letter to Alec quickly, resisting the urge to embellish things about his 'lovely fair skin' or 'glowing cheeks of lovelove pink' or his 'pert bottom of immeasurable bounce'. She would do it next time he sent letters their way, she vowed. It didn't matter if Henrik was or wasn't actually into Alec; Alec was too much fun to tease! But they were running on borrowed time, and soon, the bells rang, signaling that they had roughly ten minutes to get to PT. "Yeah, yeah, we gotta go, Curry." Preacher dragged him up and along her, answering his question as they walked.
"I.... I kin write - more or less. It ain't pretty.... okay, so I'm pretty awful at it." Preacher scowled and crossed her arms. She paused a moment to kick a rock, sending it sailing a spectacular distance. "We should go visit him... but I dunno... I probably ain't tha best to write for ya. Writing is annoyin'." Grinning, she shrugged. Writing had never held her attention like reading and numbers had. Preacher could do complex math in her head, but ask her to spell photosynthesis and she'd simply punch you. And, in the slums, paper was scarce. Most children learned by writing in the dirt with sticks.

"I guess I have a few questions to answer!" Alec looked thoughtful chuckling as he shook his head upon hearing the letters contents. The letter was then carefully returned to the envelope, before he was again being pulled away by the wrist. They would have to go out of his way to either dorm in order to drop off their letters safely at their respective bunks, then make it to formation. At some point his friend stopped leading him around and he could just walk at her side at a semi leisurely quick pace. Even if Preacher was huffing and crossing her arms in admission of her bad writing.
They both were fairly quick so walking with purpose wasn't really an issue.
"Well, I know Axel can write really good, what about if we get him to help us?" He knew it was risky to involve the tall man, but of all people Alec was confident he would at least begrudgingly agree.

Preacher looked at Alec as though he'd grown two heads. "A-Axel?!" The name stuttered out of her mouth awkwardly, like spreading cold peanut butter on soft bread. Of all the people the redhead knew, she had not expected him to suggest the one man she couldn't possibly take help from. Axel hated her, still. Ignored her; likely thought of her as an annoying consequence of his life in the military. No, he would not help her, not even if Alec asked in her stead. They were almost to the field now and she turned to him, eyes and voice serious.
"I can't ask Axel. He hates me! I won't. You kin though. I'll jus' muddle through." Then Preacher smiled, that same cheeky smile as always. She began to jog the last bit to the field, calling over her shoulder. "C'mon, we can't be late!"

He was tired of hearing Preacher say that, hate was such a ridiculous word. "Fine, I'll ask him, even if you are sure about that. Really Preacher, I don't think he hates you sheesh. You two just got off on the wrong foot!" The red head shot back shaking his head.
Most of their interactions (negative or positive for that matter) had been spurred by a series of misunderstanding and circumstances. They easily made it out to the field on time after a bit of rushing. The next hour doing Phys Ed went by relatively quickly. The hour went by quickly, the 6 bells ringing indicated it was time for another one of their scheduled classes.
However, it was the 12 ringing bells of Lunch time that Alec had to admit was perhaps one of his favorites (that and breakfast plus dinners 12). Never before had he looked forward to so many damn bells ringing before than when he was in the military. Filing into the mess hall, he first set about the task of getting food. The cherry red-headed boy had been by Preachers side most the entire day and given he would have to venture away to go speak to Axel he gave a small sigh. They'd have time to speak more later, it wasn't to much of an issue. He bid the girl farewell for now, and double checked if she really didn't want anything to do with asking for Axel's help but was met with the same odd stare as earlier. Alec at least thanked Preacher, and promised he'd return the favor some how later. (besides it had just been nice to hang out!)
With that he wandered away from her for now. Alec spied the familiar site of his blonde haired tall friend Axel. A grin spread on Alec's face as he sat down beside the taller man.
"Hey, did you get a letter from Henrik as well..? I had Preacher read mine too me, but she can't write very well apparently." Alec began picking at his food a bit. "Would..you mind helping me write a response back?" he peered over at the older male a hopeful look on his face.

Since Alec had been hanging out with Preacher all day, Axel hadn't chatted with him much. He had also been spending most of his free time running laps. Released from laps by the lunch bell, Axel was one of the first into the mess hall. He was already sitting, leaning wearily over his plate, when Alec came up to him.
Axel was sweaty and hot and tired and didn't feel fit to talk to anyone, but when Alec mentioned the letter he sat up a little straighter. And laughed.
"Yeah, I got a letter." Through some trick of the mail Axel's letter had shown up the day before. It was currently in the dorm, tossed carelessly on top of some of Axel's things until he figured out what to do about it. He laughed again, reminded of just how strange the letter was. "I think he must've been dead drunk when he wrote it. It's soaked with ale."
He took a drink of water and held the blessedly cool cup against the side of his hot face for a minute. If Alec was anxious about asking, it flew over Axel's head. He didn't see anything embarrassing about not being able to read well. Most of the people Axel had worked with for years hadn't had any interest in reading or writing beyond the bare bones basics. It wasn't terribly unusual for a laborer in Shiganshina. The redhead's family, of course, was a bit higher class. "Anyways, 'course I'll help you write back." He shot Alec a look from around the cup. "As long as it's not full of gross stuff." There was no way in hell he was going to write Henrik a love letter. The ale-soaked state of his own letter had him worried about Henrik's, er, mood at the time of the letter-writing. Axel set the cup down and started picking at his food, going for the cold stuff first. Fruit. Yes. Perfect. "I'll help Preacher too, if she wants," he added nonchalantly.
leon_a_darkangel
'sfine to go ahead and post it in pinch's letter thread if you want! biggrin However works best. I'll post mine there too after you
He wasn't much better, and wanted to shower later if possible but Alec still had energy to spare. Even if it had been with a training buddy, it didn't mean he hadn't pushed himself. Doing push ups were still difficult, but lap running was something the agile teen enjoyed well enough. At least he'd found his friend in good spirits, and between eating and listening to the other as he talked he nodded finally. His acceptance was momentarily faltered when the other talked about writing "gross stuff". If his eyes could have gotten any wider it might have been comical.
"WALLS. Not you too. Did I miss some kinda memo? My reply ain't gunna be like that!" Alec looked on, his face slightly red but attempting to keep a straight face, narrowing his eyes just a little bit. He was found of the older male, but he was going to seriously burst into flames between Preacher and Axel's teasing. Not that the other likely knew why he was reacting so strongly as he hadn't been present for the morning antics.
Coughing to dispel the brief conversation his tone sounded less high pitched and dismayed. Lost was the embarrassed tone, replaced for a more serious one leaning in so only he could hear.
"Alright, I'm really glad for your help thanks." He quickly assured the other, glad for his friends usually patient laid back attitude. Before he continued he paused for a moment, considering how to approach the delicate subject of Preacher, to Axel. Being caught between two friends was slightly complicated the red head had to admit.
Only to himself of course.
"I dunno Axel, she seems to think you hate her." He rest his chin in his palm, staring at the other letting his confusion on the matter show. "That doesn't exactly sound like your style..but I don't think she'll agree to your help right now. Maybe something will change by next time we write letters..?" Alec frowned some, his blue gaze falling across the mess hall to the back of Preachers head.
"I can try offering, I just see that going over like a lead balloon." Have you ever seen one fly? No, certainly not. Neither would the suggestion Alec was almost 100% certain.
He could hope, time didn't always mend all wounds. The two had fought several time already, but the way they were defensive of one another had Alec carefully trying to smooth out some of the misconceptions between them. Even if it was trying. There was no way of telling exactly how it would work out he quickly decided. It was on their plates, all he could do was play messenger boy. Which ironically had been his job most of his adult life, Alec would always forever more be the peace maker when a situation afforded for it.

Axel snickered at Alec's indignant response to the comment about gross stuff. Alec was a good friend, but Axel was both amused and fascinated by the redhead's blushes. They were ferociously, impressively red, and all-too-easy to provoke. Teasing Alec was probably good for him. If Axel and Preacher got him to blush enough, eventually his blushiness would wear out. Right? They were just toughening him up.
Alec's talk about Preacher was less amusing, and Axel wore a rather gloomy expression as he went back to picking at his lunch. "It's Preacher who hates me," Axel said. Okay, so maybe he was the one started the whole Neighbelline-Trotto thing. Preacher had started plenty of s**t herself. He shook his head resolutely. He wasn't going to chat about Preacher with Alec. It would be a pointless conversation. "Yeah, maybe next time."
Time to change the subject.
"Did Ha-Henrik ask you if you wanted to visit?" Axel shrugged. "I didn't write back yet. Wasn't sure if he was really asking or if he was just hammered when he wrote me. He kept going on and on about happy friends with smiling faces." He snickered again. "Henrik's a weird dude, but he's okay."
leon_a_darkangel
I went ahead and make another post I figure you can make another closer or w/e if you want 8D
Alec shook his head just a bit more when the other indicated Preacher was the one who in fact hated him. "I think youre both daft for throwing that kind of stuff around." At this he simply shrugged some.
"I'll be sure to tell her, but yea." All he could do was relay the message. Eventually some kid of remediation would likely need to occur Alec was half certain.
The fact the other was subject changing wasn't an issue for him. Especially since he wasn't ragging on Preacher, or teasing him further.
"Yes! He asked about my coming to visit when I have some time off. I'm guessing he asked you to? I think we'll have leave after a bit of time in service. I'd love to go back to Shiganshina and hang out, we should all go!" Alec looked thoughtful, tapping a finger to his chin. At the mention he was weird, the other shrugged. Everyone was weird if you thought about it, some people had more hang ups than others of course.
"I guess we'll have to figure something out when we get time to go back." The red head said in conclusion. Lunch was almost over, which meant it was time for class.
Even if Preacher and Axel both stood on rocky grounds between themselves, if it was one thing Alec knew he could count of either of them to keep things lively. Better yet, he trusted them to be there for him. They were good friends, in best of times and worse. With a bit of effort, perhaps the worst of the feuding would come to an end. As far as he was concerned he didn't like playing man in the middle but if it meant smoothing out the tension it was fine by him. (For now anyway.)
"See you later man!" Alec slipped out of his benched seat picking up his tray off, knowing he was unlikely to see Axel until later back at the dorm, or during pt when both would be preoccupied.
