America's approach was announced by an authoritative click of heels down the hallway that paused in front of 112 before the door was flung open. From rigidly neat bun to modest blouse and pencil skirt, America could possibly pass as a young secretary, but couldn't quite reach the heights of sexy teacher. Holding up a pair of the most hipster-typical glasses she could find in the Sun's collection, she waggled the frames enticingly at him.

"Kon's weren't bad, but I think these'll suit you."

He laughed (shy, downcast, tongue caught in the corner of his teeth kind of laugh, barely more than a sudden exhale and quiet, the kind of laugh he was prone to when they were startled out of him but sincere), and he reached across the desk to take them out of her hand. The new furniture arrangement was sadly apropos: she by necessity had to stand across the desk, and he behind it like the world's most thuggish-looking principal. He examined them only briefly before obligingly putting them on, then leaning back and steepling his fingers, also, it must be said, obligingly.

The glasses were startlingly not bad. Subtract the scar and he looked more like an overworked college student in the middle of finals than he did a moribund cancer patient. He needed a sweater. He needed, in fact, the sweater that he almost always wore to sleep in, which always made him look vaguely less horrible than he normally did. Instead he was wearing, in anticipation of her arrival, a collared shirt and a tie. It was a truly horrific tie. He'd left it on. There was a cow on it.

"That's a good look for you," he observed after a long moment to inspect her, "but the tattoo kind of clashes. Nice shoes."

She stood primly for a moment, posture perfect to an even greater degree than normal, and then grinned, leaning to put her elbows on the desk as she inspected him. The tie received the lion's share of her admiration, for it was truly awe inspiring in all its hideous glory. "Oh, Mr. Thompson," she crooned, "wherever did you get such a thing?"

America kicked a leg back and up, waggling the heel before setting it back down again with a sharp click, "My Uncle Beaux was always one for heels. Once I wore crocs to visit and oh, the sound he made when he saw them." Her smile grew full of fond mischief, as if alarming uncles had been a favoured pastime. "Hardly managed to say hello before he had me out the door and at the mall. These were the ones I liked best."

Taym meditated on the many uncomfortable avenues of speculation this little tidbit offered, and then decided firmly not to pursue any of them.

"Crocs are an abomination," is what he settled on, and then, after a tranquil pause during which he did not oblige her also with an appreciative stare either to the view she was giving him by putting her elbows on the desk or to her shoes (although he'd liked to have done either, or both), he added, absently toying with the end of his horrible tie: "What are you going to do if the alarms go off and you're wearing those things? You should wear your hair up more," he added, which might have been unexpected given how much he vocally and loudly admired her hair, but might not have been, given how much he silently but obviously (with his hands, with a way of kissing them that always felt a little like he was laying claim) admired her neck and her shoulders.

"I even had these little charms I could pop into the holes," America agreed, as if he had just waxed poetic on the many and varied attributes of tacky plastic footwear. "I can run in heels well enough, at least for a little while, and kicking em off is..." there was a soft clatter as she demonstrated the ease of said action.

The hair comment received a scrunched nose, his tastes obviously contrary to her own, and she reached up to unpin the bun. "No way, I hate it up like that. I only wear it like that when I need to look hella professional." The hair, now down, was several inches shorter, the trim was tidy, but lacking any professional finish beyond that. "Always easier to just play at being Aunt Prudie. I'm thinking another tattoo next leave, a majestic as ******** phoenix on my back."

America reached out for the tie.

He let her, pushing the book he'd been reading aside so that he could lean forward and pull her down towards him, considering what snarky comment of approval he'd make against her mouth about the idea of a second tattoo before he was distracted, shutting down Fiona's restless irritation that he wasn't even trying to resist in favor of gathering America's hair over her shoulder, examining the ends.

"When'd you get a haircut?" he asked, an offhand question delivered in a distracted tone that suggested, along with the fact that he tugged her nearer again, that her answer wasn't going to have much bearing on the immediate future. And of course he noticed: it was like him, and it pleased him to point out that he'd noticed after tormenting her with feigned obliviousness for weeks over her tattoo.

The girl squinted at the fabric, and made a small disgusted sound. "The other day. Lawrence had the fool idea he could keep up with me and tried to follow on a run." Her mouth curled into something smug and pleased, "As if. He had to summon that ******** gauntlet to even get close." The smile turned wry, "Got a bit too close at one point, but it needed a trim anyway and I left him in the dirt so..."

America shrugged, "I won. I'm not sure if this tie better for the cow being all painted-like or worse, but it has exceeded all expectations, gotta say." Her eyes grew heavy-lidded as she spoke, nearly closing the distance between them.

This was normally the point at which she'd find Taym closing the gap for her, restless and impatient and possessive. He didn't do that, but neither did he draw back. Instead he said, carefully toneless: "He did what?"

'He was following after me with those gauntlets summoned," she repeated, confused. "Have you seen them? Long bladed claws. He should've known better than to chase me, but I got a pretty clear idea of how well he can get through rough terrain and obstacles. Doesn't seem to have very great endurance, either." Again, America looked smug, and this time there was a certain amount of calculation in her expression as she recalled it.

He was silent, with that sudden tension in his jaw that indicated mounting rage. Not at her, or at least not yet, but enough that he was clearly distracted for a few seconds from resuming, as it were, business. He fanned the ends of her hair in his fingers, running his tongue over his teeth, and his hands, steady up til now, had started that vague trembling again. He pulled the glasses off with his free hand and set them aside.

"I don't ******** care," he said quietly, "how well he can get through rough terrain or what his physical specs are. I don't want to talk about Lawrence," he said, the second time he had to her, and only then did he close the gap, still irritated, hands still shaking.

She yielded to both his tensions and attentions, hands moving from tie to collar, forgetting for a moment, the injured throat it barely hid. Taking in the shaking hands and hard jaw, America found herself recalling that first kiss in the hallway, found herself murmuring plaintively against his mouth, "Don't ask about him."

And there should have been a so or a then at the beginning of that. It should have been a mouthy bit of sass. Instead it was request verging on demand that she hadn't intended to make at all.

He did draw back, this time.

"A random question to you about your daily ******** goings-on," he said quietly, "should not have an answer in any way related to Lawrence."

Rocking back with a sigh, America rolled her eyes, "And in an ideal world, that would be so. But it's ******** not, instead I live on an island, in the same building, as an obsessive creep who's decided to fixate on me for god knows what reason. So, y'know, tough."

There was a conflict in her voice, between harsh impatience and apology. Because she was the one who had to deal with Lawrence here, deal with his presence and his messages and the way he was nearly always somewhere on the periphery when she went about her day. But she wasn't the one who'd been abandoned in the desert to die by the man, who'd sent two dozen broken, nearly incoherent messages requesting help or to otherwise be allowed to die rather than continue as he had been.

Again the wryly pissed twist of his jaw, again the tongue running over his teeth which he did (always, always) when he was trying to avoid saying something recklessly angry, and then he leaned back and got up. He was pulling his cigarettes out of his pocket and undoubtedly on his way to go smoke by the window (always, always) until the low-level rage had passed, but he abruptly turned by the time he reached the foot of the bed, stopped tamping the pack down on his palm to toss them on top of the dresser and reach for her again, apparently having thought better of the smoke break.

Maybe he wanted to indulge the anger in a productive fashion--he'd always been playful and affectionate and nervey with her and maybe it would be a change of pace. Maybe he hoped that the rage would pass if he had an appropriate distraction. Either way, he was half-apologetic and half-aggressive and all his usual demanding, but not ten seconds later he was drawing away again, this time with frustrated resignation, and he let go of her arms and closed his eyes and said: "Let's not, actually."

Which wasn't how he wanted this conversation to go at all, but at least, he thought dimly, it was happening.

Her surprise was notable but brief as she began to smile against the rough press, hands and body moving to encourage but not nearly quickly enough, because then he was gone. Eyes wide and face flustered, if she was pleasantly surprised moments before, now she was simply startled and confused. "What?"

And irritated, steadily growing more so by the moment.
