What is a Decan?

Each sign is a thirty degree arc, or segment of the zodiac.
All that means is that because a circle is 360 degrees, twelve sections of a circle are going to be 30 degrees each.

30 x 12 = 360

Now why we are here, each section sign is divided into three decans. So for example lets take Pisces, my sun sign.

0 - 10 Pisces = First Decan
10 - 20 Pisces = Second Decan
20 - 30 Pisces = Third Decan

It is that way for all the signs. 0 is the last degree of the previous sign btw.

The decans alter the qualities of your sun sign (and other planets in a chart but that's more in-depth). In grimoires of old the decans (and even the signs themselves in some) where considered entities that could be called. They were also the domain of the fixed stars found within that arc of the sky. Just as a planet is exalted when in the sign it controls but the fixed stars are called so because they dont wonder. Thus the name associated with the dacan and the name of the star would often be used together in ritual or in making astrological seals and charms. In some grimoires they also divide the zodiac into 5 degree parts, so that every sign has six points of measure. There are even systems of magick and astrology that account for all 360 points (see Franz Bardon).

How the Minor Arcana applies

Three Decans a sign is 36 decans for the whole of the Zodiac
Six Decans a sign is 72 decans for the whole of the zodiac.

The Minor Aracana of the Tarot is 40 in number (56 if counting the royal), being ace to ten in each suit. We want to get rid of the Aces to make this work. They are root cards, singularities. Correspondence begins with two.

So now we should have 36 cards, which match our number of 36 Decans.
Remember each decan can be divided into two decans of 5 degrees each.
Traditionally the seventy-two Daemons of the Goetia and the Seventy-two Angels of the shem are attributed to each of the seventy-two sub-decans. However, because we normally work with only 36 decans and each ten is two fives, two angels and two daemons are associated with each of the 36. Which means every card of the Tarot labeled 2 - 10, corresponds to two daemons and two angels.

These can be seen as your Birth Angel and Birth Daemon and the corresponding card, your birth card. Also, any planet or other celestial body charted in your astrological chart also has an angel and a daemon which influence the timing and synchronicities of the represented force in your life.

One of the entities is called of day, or of light and the other of night or of dark.
So that on each card you have:

An Angel of Day
An Angel of Night
A Daemon of Day
An Angel of Night.

When we look at this on the zodiac round we see that it mirrors the flow of osculating forces.
