Breaks Skin and Shatters Bone circled around in the air, set adrift from their master, but not too far away. They knew not to stray too far out of sight and always to return. So when they spotted the smaller bird on the ground, only Breaks Skin alighted on a tall branch above the pathetically chirping thing. Shatters Bone remained in the air as a beacon to Rift in Stone who knew the disappearance of one of them meant that prey was to be had.
Still, the two birds did not go in for the kill. They had be trained out of going for immobile prey, their master much too proud for a simple kill. However, some of this situation spoke to a part of them that had been trained away long ago, the part of them that had been trained on dead animals dragged behind their master and the beat of hooves against their wings when they weren't agile enough to dodge in their pursuit of a quick meal.
The bird on the ground was once a worthy meal, but now it was just another dying thing to be watched curiously. Breaks Skin lifted her wings, shuffling impatiently. The thing on the ground should be flying; it had wings. Then it would at least be worth chasing it down and snatching it out of the air.

The great avians would be alone for long, as the piteous cries of the fallen bird had attracted the attention of another beast. Frostbite glided onto the scene in utter silence, his sharp clawed feet landing near the perceived prey, immediately poised to a fight and fixing the other two birds with a warning glare from his amber eyes. He uttered a single screech, claws scoring the ground in a bid for territory. The gryphon hardly cared if the other two were there first; they hadn't acted on the wounded prey and as far as he was concerned, they were less intelligent for it.

"Frost." The single word gave the territorial beast pause, his eyes still fixated on the other two birds but easing up his machismo display considerably. The green-painted doe trotted into the clearing, ears upright, mindful immediately of the swooping birds in a familiar manner; she'd encountered them before and knew well what threat they could pose. Winter didn't approach the fallen bird immediately, her molten eyes flicking around the space to seek the owner of the birds, fairly certain she hadn't encroached on another's territory.
She was a huntress, but she was no scavenger. She wouldn't take another's kill, but she'd only be so 'considerate' until she could determine the situation.Amorpheous Sorry, no post color, I haven't decided on one that isn't eye searing yet!

They were not on Westfen territory. Even Rift in Stone, with his unwavering loyalty, left the clan lands in favor of different hunting grounds occasionally. He appeared soon after Winter did, never one to take his time once his birds alerted him to prey. So when he came up to the scene, near silently, only to find a wounded bird on the ground, he was disappointed in the choice that his birds had made.
He glanced quickly at the other doe, took in her cold, golden eyes and her lithe from. A nod, neither too respectful nor overtly rude, simply an acknowledgement of a presence. He gave a low whistle and Shatters Bone came to perch next to his partner, two eagles staring down at the group side by side. He nodded at the bird whimpering on the ground. "Is this yours?"
His voice gave nothing away, just a simple question asked out of practicality. He had little intention of killing it himself; it would be a waste of the skill that he had built up, but if his eagles truly wanted the pathetic meal, they could have it. He was displeased that they brought him there to witness it's pitiful state though.
He doubted it was the doe's though. She didn't seem the type to leave it laying there, crying out, when it could have been devoured long ago.Chrystali Don't worry about it! Chasm is... a very boring brown... and ahhh, I really love Frostbite. Would you be up for gryphon breeding between him and Watch Your Step?

The doe tensed visibly when the buck came into her field of view, one ear upright, the other to the side and listening for anything else that might come as a surprise. She waited in unmoving silence as the darker male inspected the fallen bird, Frostbite doing much of the same despite the other's proximity. When the other spoke, Winter curled her lip over her teeth slightly. "No." The word was said similarly to his nod, nothing in the vicinity of manners or social etiquette, but her own brand of acknowledgement that he was clearly something of the same mindset.
Giving no indication that he understood what the two were saying, the gryphon bowed his head upon the buck's inquiry and twisted the bird's neck, ending the piteous cries. His ear feathers quivered, straining, before settling with disappointment, kicking at the dirt with his feline hind paws. The doe understood he was discontent but did not give it voice. "Yours found it. It is their morsel." Even as she spoke, the natural avian retreated to her side, lifting his head and attempting to find a new query. He was still hungry, and the bird would only feed himself.
Winter flicked her tail, regarding the other's distant expression with consideration. She was a hunter and had no interest in sharing spoils, but if he knew the land better than she...there might yet be a meal to be had. Not quite willing to turn her back on him yet, she waited, staring with unblinking eyes, holding her ground to see if there was any other words to be had.Amorpheous YES! Oh MAN they'd make beautiful babies even! OAO

He tilted his head minutely, reading the doe's gryphon more than he tried to glean emotion off the doe. He could respect her frankness, her disinclination towards embellishing her thoughts. His gaze flickered up to his eagles for a second, their unblinking red-rimmed stares meeting his eyes. One breath and then before the next, his decision made. He shook his head, just a touch, "Yours can have it."
"It it not enough for both of them," he added after a short pause. Then, his voice darkening with something like a large ego bruised, "They have more to learn if they think that this was worth bringing to my notice."
He clicked his tongue, just barely on the side irritated, not at her but at his birds. She was lucky that she had the presence of a hunter, otherwise she would not have been above his scorn. Shatters Bone and Breaks Skin lifted into air simultaneously at the command. "There is more prey to be had here. That bird can hardly be considered a meal for your gryphon."
He only offered because this was free land. If it were not, he would have warned her off of it long ago. That, and he was faintly curious about how the doe might fare in a real hunt.

There was a moment where Winter was almost inclined to give the male a lash of hoof -- but his quick explanation halted her briefly bubbled ire. Even so, her jaw clenched and her eyes narrowed just a touch, not quite taking the words as a slight, but just barely so. It wasn't even the words that riled her entirely, more that she then saw that the other treated his eagles as pets - that they answered to him. She couldn't really be angry, so much as disgruntled; it was, as far as she was concerned, an utter waste of their potential.
Ah, and there was what she was waiting for. He did know the land, and more than that, he was...what was that? An invitation? A good bye? She was uncertain to his intent, which naturally made her even more crass. Winter didn't have time for minced words.
She flicked her ears forward and tilt her head to the side. Frostbite noted her shift in body language and plucked the dead bird from the ground, eating it with haste enough to not be left behind if she went into action. There'd be no gratitude from either of them for the morsel, for a dead bird was hardly a hunt. It was then that she vaguely understood his disdain from a moment before, and with it, she lifted her chin in silent parting. He would hunt his way; she would hunt hers.
Flicking her tail in mild disappointment, she tensed and darted off towards the treeline, not about to give another hunter space to lead her off or try to attack her. She was still hungry, and with Frostbite flying low just above her head, she knew now that they had competition, and she'd not fall short on another's pride.

He didn't even shrug when she turned away. He had not meant his words to be an invitation or a good bye, it was merely a stated fact. He could read her disapproval and would have responded with his own sneering disdain if she had not left so soon. Still, there was little for him to raise his hackles in that doe, so as soon as she disappeared, he forgot her.
He flicked a glance up into the air, seeing his eagle's familiar flashes of orange, white, and black against the blue sky before setting off himself. There was better prey to be had, a better hunt, than scavenging nearly dead birds off of the ground. He flicked his tail in a vague motion, sending the two birds scattering to look for better prey.
The doe already long forgotten, his expression settled back into it's usual cold superiority as he looked for the next creature that would stain his hooves with its blood. If he hunted quicker that day, with more ferocious efficiency, it certainly had nothing to do with the fact that there was competition in the area. It mattered not after all. He knew he was skilled and nothing, not even a doe with a gryphon, would change that.
