The Dream

    Grey found himself working.

It always started that way, making it difficult to discern if he was dreaming or awake. He was always working, but there were small things that were different: what he was working on, in what part of the shop and just what it was he was doing in particular. All he knew was the longer he worked, the louder life buzzed in his ears. He could hear everything: traffic, cars honking, people talking, sirens wailing...it all sounded like it was right in front of him, even though he was the only one in the room - perhaps the entire building. It got to the point where Grey would be forced to take a break and retreat to the bathroom. Once there, he'd splash his face with water like he always did, trying to turn everything into white noise and wishing for a moment's peace. Then, it would happen.

Sometimes it was immediate. Sometimes he'd have to stare at himself in the mirror for a while, watching the droplets of water trace the hard lines of his face, but inevitably, something would catch his attention out of the corner of his eye. Grey wasn't quite sure what it was, but when he turned around to look at the bathroom wall, he'd see it: the corner of the worn metal wall slightly peeled, and behind it, a shaft of light.

Grey would approach the wall and, with all the confusion in the world, peel that corner free. It only went as far as his height and slightly wider than his shoulders, always too bright for him to see clearly. Even so, he would step through the wall of light and drop the wall with surprise when he arrived in the glen.

It was beautiful, and always the same, more reliable than the rest of his dream: a rich, forest green carpet of grass blanketing the hills that stretched as far as the eye could see, broken up only by lighter grass where the sun cut through the clouds, trees dotting the landscape but never enough to obscure his vision. Flowers were beginning to bloom as spring took hold, filling the clear air with the fragrance of honeysuckle and the sweet grass. A small river ran off to his right, babbling quietly as distant as it was, but curving and hugging the right edge of his vision. Above was a beautiful deep blue, soft grey clouds mostly covered by cotton white dotting the yawning stretch of sky. Very far off, if he squinted, he could see the twilight color of a distant mountain range, but it was the glen that held his attention. It was the glen he sought, and the glen that found him.

Filled with the blissful sounds of nature untouched by human hands, Grey would sit in the calf-high grass and just stare off into the distance, watching the breeze ripple the grass like waves of the ocean. As the dream stretched longer and was more difficult to break free from, animals would join him, some sitting at his side, some crawling on his grease-stained coveralls. Always in his peripheral, not quite able to focus on, he could make out the great white plumage at the edge of a copse of trees. It would get closer as the dreams got longer, but Grey paid it little mind, blissfully at ease in the silence and peace he so desperately needed.
    ____________________________

He was supposed to simply be at ease for the rest of his sleep, but rather than be blissfully unaware, he felt something unusual beneath his palm as he leaned back in the grass. Curling his fingers around it, he withdrew it from the cool soil and brought it around, tearing his eyes away from the scenery with some difficulty to look at what it was. There, in the middle of his palm, was a perfect golden arrowhead, untouched by time and only dirtied by the soil he'd retrieved it from. Puzzled - this felt new, and in a dream of many years, that was slightly alarming - he ran his thumb over the smooth object. It was as real as the rest of the dream, and as he touched it with his thumb, it shifted - or maybe it had been facing that way all along, but he was aware it was pointing. Grey lifted his gaze and saw it was aiming at the copse of trees that usually housed the white feathered thing, and it was then that he realized it was getting closer.

There was no sense of dread or fear in him, just a pleasant surprise and a warmth of comfort, as though he'd been waiting for this and it was finally coming to pass. Grey said nothing, but watched in wonder as it came closer, seeing it but not focusing, knowing it was only a plethora of feathers and that whatever it was, it was very eager to make his acquaintance.

Grey tilted his head to the side and opened his mouth to speak--

Dreamer Info

Dreamer Name: Conall Greyson. He goes by Grey and rarely introduces himself by his first name.
    Age: 35.
    Ethnicity: Asian Indian American.
    Height: 6'1".
Weight: 225 lbs on average, varies.
    Occupation: Welder.
    Appearance:
Grey is 6'1" and broad enough to be called a bear of a man, the type you'd expect to see as a lumberjack and not in a position of delicate work. He has dark skin from traveling and being largely outdoors, the type that doesn't fade much even if he doesn't go outside for a longtime. Hands are calloused from a life of hard work and labor, scars criss-crossing various parts of his body. His platinum blond hair has sun-bleached to white, the length just below his shoulders and straight, though his mostly charcoal facial hair reveals that he's also going prematurely grey, streaked with salt and pepper on his chin. He sweeps his bangs back and the hair at his temples into a half-tail to keep it out of his face. Serious eyes are set beneath dark brows, a touch green towards the edge of the irises and brown towards the pupil, giving him a golden hue in-between. His lips have a scar that slightly split them on the left side, a work accident years ago. Grey's expression is perpetually unimpressed, lacking laugh lines near his mouth and eyes; he does not smile much, and it shows.

    Personality:
One of the first things one might pick up about Grey is as obvious as the expression on his face: the man is stern to a fault. He's terribly serious and forward, choosing not to mince words or leave anything to misunderstanding. Grey keeps himself composed, not in a tight or flawless manner, but in the way that suggests he's comfortable with himself and his ways and makes no apologies for it. Social etiquette can be a bit beyond him outside of polite greetings; the man has no mind for small talk and sounds every bit as forced and awkward as he feels when he attempts it.

Because of his no-nonsense and forward mannerisms, Grey can come off as a bit...intense. The man is an extreme workaholic and as such, time is a precious commodity, one he cannot afford if you can't be direct as he is. This can make him seem flippant to what other people may have to say, but the simple truth is that he can keep working while someone yammers and still hear everything they say; his time is expensive, not monetarily but in a manner more driven to work and not socialize. As Grey likes to say, he's not a catering service: say your peace and move on. Such an attitude has landed him a position that he doesn't have to deal with people, which suits him just fine. The only downside is that his already less than welcoming behavior has only encouraged him to be more reclusive, driving him to work longer hours with less time seeing anything outside of his metal workshop.

It's not all bad -- while it's unhealthy that he fairly obsesses over his work, it's only because he's passionate and throws his weight entirely into what he enjoys. Be it cooking, carrying a tune or working, Grey gives his all into everything he does, menial or important. He doesn't believe in doing anything half-assed, expecting the same of others: if one should put their mind to a task, he anticipates that it will be done to the best of one's capabilities. In that sense, he expects much of those around him and has little patience to deal with people who are unhappy in life or don't make efforts to do what makes them happiest. It's in such situations that his inability to filter his words can be a great boon or a great detriment.

    Asides:
    - It's worth noting that even though Grey is a workaholic and doesn't like to waste his time, he does not ignore people all the time. He mostly is unresponsive at work, but he does take breaks and go out.

    - Grey is resourceful as hell. He can make a filling meal out of almost anything -- whether it tastes good or not is up for debate, but you wont starve around the guy.

    - His father was an excellent singer (not famous). Grey inherited his father's voice has a rich baritone (with a touch of gravel from smoking) when he does sing.

    - He's not materialistic; he has a hard time reasoning to keep 'things' that aren't useful in some way. Grey has very few sentimental items and they're small enough to be tucked into a shoe box and stored in the back of his closet.

    - Currently, Grey is a welder that works on big machinery in construction zones. It's rather lucrative, but he keeps a modest house and has put the majority of his money in savings. He previously worked as a jeweler, a blacksmith and a repair man for a metallurgy plant.

    - He has a Bernese Mountain Dog named Ajax. Due to his long hours, he's taken to bringing the dog to his workplace, letting him run out and play in the yard where the vehicles are kept.

    - Grey smokes constantly, both Marlboros and Partagás Serie D No. 4 cigars. He is literally only not smoking when he's showering or sleeping.

History: Grey had a very normal life of being an only child with two normal, working class parents and a modest home. His father, American, was the owner of a mail courier route and his mother was a convalescent nurse. His father was a chain-smoker and died in his 50's from the stress of smoking and his work giving him an early heart attack. His mother, while still alive, doesn't remember Grey, suffering from Alzheimer's and put in a home that can help her since he no longer can.

When he was young - barely twenty-one - he married his best friend in a spontaneous ceremony. Drinking may or may not have been involved and though they tried to make it work, they were simply too young, and divorced within a year. The failed marriage and bad judgement on his part made Grey jaded, not really willing to engage in relations with anyone else. It was about then that he picked up smoking. His father passed away three years later, and Grey smoked more.

He picked up odd jobs until he landed his current position at the age of twenty-six, using it mostly for the traveling benefits and the long hours that kept him busy. As time went on, Grey became a senior technician in the company but kept his job, as no one could do it quite as well as he. It was just as well to Grey, as he certainly didn't want to hand over his work to someone else and have it be sub-par.

The dream first appeared when he was in his early thirties. He didn't think anything about it until some years later when it began to be more frequent and hard to wake up from. Being a heavy sleeper didn't help, and Grey was beginning to sleep through his alarm clock, something unforgivable to his own standards...

Grey's Relationships

          Dee :: ❤❤❤❤❤
Grey doesn't really have an opinion of this one yet. He was an attractive young man but quite skittish and quiet.

          Granny Spiderlegs :: ❤❤❤❤❤
She's as much an enigma to Grey as the dream catcher is. He doesn't know a damn thing about the woman other than she helped him in a time of need and asked for nothing in return; at the very least, he respects her.
