Character name: Catreena Bough
Link to journal AND/OR Quest Thread: Catreena's Thicket
Describe your character's personality in less than 30 words: Tree is shy, curious, naive, and affectionate. It takes her a while to warm up to someone, but once she does, she's not afraid to dote on them.
Does your character have a ship/ OTP? Not exactly. She thinks a lot of people are interesting, but she's been too shy to really get to know any of them. (She thinks Billy Goat is pretty cute, though.)
Describe your character if they were a vegetable: Asparagus. Pretty rigid and stiff (out of timidity), but if she gets warm enough (flustered), she's pretty easy to soften (melt, make flexible/supple).
What is your character's favourite music/ song/ piece? 'The Voice' by Celtic Woman
What is your character's hobby, if they had spare time? Haha, she'd probably enjoy tending a garden of her very own.
Is your character more arts, science, or sports inclined? She's more science inclined because of her natural curiosity.
What type of personality traits does your character gravitate towards? Tree really likes people who know what they're doing (or at least think they do) and are very confident because those are traits she lacks. Being gullible as she is, she's likely to follow such people to the end of the world.
What are your character's personality traits (Good ones?) She's considerate and caring about others and likes to ask a lot of questions.
What are your character's personality flaws? She doesn't really know the meaning of personal space and can be somewhat dense at times or devoid of common sense. It's somewhat difficult to get things through her head, especially because she's so easily distracted.
What is your character's favourite colour? Moss green
Describe your character if they were in the opposite faction: I'm really not sure what she'd be like as a Horseman, truthfully. Perhaps less shy, but no more oblivious or naive, I think. As for clans, though, I'd say death because she believes in the circle of life and that all things given life must return it in the end as is nature's way.
What would your character look like as the opposite gender OR 10 years into the future? If she was the opposite gender, I'd imagine she'd have her hair either shorter or tied up rather than just out. She'd probably wear a great deal less clothing because she's still not all that comfortable with it and wears the minimum amount she can get away with for this very reason.
If your character was an Amityville Professor/ Divison Leader/ Horsemen Clans lead how would they teach others? She would likely have students care for plants of their own and have them watch and record how they grow, as she's very patient. Students who don't share her patience, however, would likely find this very boring.
Who does your character look up to? She looks up to all the seniors of the school, of course! They must have worked really hard to get up to where they did.
What is a great weakness of your character? She is SO oblivious and naive. Tree still has trouble understanding why there are male and female genders/sexes.
What are their favourite foods? Um...she likes meat because she won't eat plants. I'd imagine other products made from animals (like milk, ice cream, cheese, or eggs) would strike her fancy as well, but she hasn't tried those yet.
Favourite fashion style? Minimum clothing. Not because she wants to be skimpy or show off skin but simply because she doesn't like the restriction of wearing such things. If she had to pick a proper fashion, however, it'd likely be natural and nature-friendly. Hippy/hipster, perhaps.
Favourite minipet? She's really always wanted an Elnin Bloom, but she loves her minipet Fauno, Pan.
If your character was in a fantasy novel who would they be? If she was in a fantasy novel, she'd probably be a shy sidekick who would easily fall for the main character whether or not they shared her feelings.
Describe your character as a mythical creature: Aren't nymphs mythical creatures? I think of her as a tree spirit; an earth elemental in a sort of way.
Describe your character as a Disney princess and/ or Villain I think she'd be most like Ariel or Giselle with how curious, dense, oblivious, and naive she is about things and people. She needs to learn more about the 'real world'.
If your character could travel anywhere where would they go? She would probably want to go visit a petrified forest because to her that would be like the ruins of Pompei for humans. If not that, likely a rainforest, like the Amazon.
If your character could confess one great secret what would they confess? I think she might confess that she secretly wishes everyone would just grow roots and stay put forever because she feels they would notice and learn things better that way. The world is so fast-paced and hard for her to keep up that she has trouble understanding and she has no idea how anyone else can, either. She thinks it would be easier if everyone just slowed down.

Ignorant

Catreena couldn't understand why. She had walked out of her dorm that morning and into the cafeteria just fine. It was when she entered said cafeteria that the chaos began.

People stopped and stared. Others swore out loud what Tree had learned were not very nice words. Still others - girls - ran to her side with cries of distress and took her by her arms, hauling her off to the bathroom. She didn't understand what the matter was.

"Catreena, honey, where are your clothes?!" one of the older girls asked. Another girl brought out a gym bag to offer up her gym uniform.

"Clothes?" Tree repeated, confused. "Oh." She looked down at herself. "I didn't want to wear them today."

"She's uh...new here," one girl told another who was looking at Tree like she was crazy. "Catreena, clothes are mandatory. Like your skull pin. Where is that, by the way?"

"Oh - I wore it in my hair," she said, gesturing to it. "Why are they mandatory?"

"Because - because people can see you naked! They can see all your body parts!" another girl cried. "Doesn't that bother you?"

"I, uh...well, I'm not used to having body parts," Catreena confessed. "I was mostly just a tree before I came here." She struggled to put on the gym uniform, unsure of what limbs went in what holes.

"And trees don't wear clothes," the first girl explained, trying to help the dryad. "Whoops, no, that's where your leg goes, not your head..."

"Uh, ladies?" a girl standing at the bathroom door said. "Better get ready to knock heads. There's a crowd of boys outside and they're ready with phone cameras."

"What?" Catreena asked. "But why? What does that mean?"

"Don't worry your pretty little head about it, Tree," the older girl said. "Just stay near us and we'll be your guards. Oh, and keep those on, please?" she asked, watching the nymph dubiously peering down the front of her shirt. "They're important."

"But...why?" she asked, still looking as confused as when she first came into the bathroom.

"They hide your reproductive organs," one blunt female answered. "Which the guys enjoy the sight of a little too much. Now stay close and stop fidgeting with your shorts. They're elastic; they'll stay on if you stop stretching them."

"Oh...okay..." she murmured meekly, following the girls back outside. "I just wish they would stop hugging me so tight..."

Wonder

For a nymph, having legs was weird. A lot of things were weird. Nymphs were usually bound to one place or thing of nature. For a dryad, it was usually a single tree. To be able to move around and walk away freely from the tree was very strange and outside of a nymph's usual comfort zone. That was why Catreena's mother had to practically force her to attend school and see the world.

What a world it was, though. Not even the human world - just Halloween Town in itself was amazing. There were so many creatures like her and so many not! Though there were several factions and houses, no two students seemed to be the same. Not even the same species!

Sure, there were demons and monsters and spirits, but they were so diverse it was often hard to tell where some students belonged. Some overlapped the other. Catreena was actually surprised to find herself in the Monster division when she considered herself a tree spirit and thus belonging with the elementals in the spirit division. Still, what did she know? Maybe being stuck to a tree made a difference. Besides, she was proud of her house because she felt they had the most interesting and diverse students within it.

When someone said the word 'demon', Tree was pretty sure people had an image in mind of a stereotypical demon. Undead and reapers were the same. Spirits, a little less so...but monsters? Who could define a monster, really? Monsters were like the 'miscellaneous' category, Catreena felt, and she was happy to be a part of it. Halloween Town was such a place of intrigue and Amityville a place of wonder. Little by little, Catreena started to be happy she had come, even if it had initially been against her wishes.

Revulsion

Why? Why were those people eating her friends?! They tore up perfectly good greens and then put them in something called a salad! It was terrible! Those poor plants had little to no way to defend themselves. They couldn't run away or fight back. The worst they could do was give someone a stomach ache or indigestion, but even then, it would only be revenge from beyond the grave.

Maybe they were even, though, because Catreena noticed other students seemed just as disgusted by the lunch she regularly ate. She often brought her own, which usually consisted of some skinned woodland animal like a rabbit or squirrel. It seemed not all others were so used to seeing animals without their skin because some kids began to regurgitate their lunch and tree highly doubted it was out of regret for eating her friends.

What was funny was that it seemed to affect the ones who ate her friends most of all. They called themselves 'vegetarians' and seemed determined to eat nothing but green, defenseless plants. It was Catreena's outrage, horror and disgust at this that initially made her avoid them at all costs, but once she discovered their reactions to her meals...well. Let's just say she began to seek out their company during lunch time after that.

Unexpected

Who would have guessed in a million years that Zipper was the most powerful boss? Aside from the Composer, of course, but that was different. Zipper had been there to help since the beginning. Catreena had thought they were friends.

Okay, so maybe 'friends' was a little strong a word, but Zipper had shown her the ropes and how to battle with minipets. Sure, he'd been sarcastic about it, but that had been part of his personality. Catreena couldn't help even finding it a little endearing at times. He had helped her fight the other bosses like Pulse, Beat, and Queenie with ease. He'd been confident about it and encouraging, telling her they could easily beat them. So when they'd been through all of that and then he turned around at the final stage, Catreena hadn't known what to expect.

Zipper was the final boss. That's all there was to it. It was odd, because she thought she perhaps should have felt betrayed, perhaps, but instead she felt different. Like, all this time, he had tested her and strengthened her for this moment. This was the final test in his teaching. If she could beat him, she would be able to surpass him.

It was a little scary, the way he'd presented himself to her as the final boss, but perhaps that was part of the final challenge. Maybe he'd wanted to scare her a little so he could find out what she was really made of. Would she be a coward? Turn into a tree and hide? Anyway, wasn't creating FEAR one of the valued things at Amityville? It made Catreena feel brave to face him, a friend, because she also felt that by challenging her as a final boss, he was still trying to help. Her beliefs were confirmed when he later told her he knew she could do it. And to be able to keep him as a friend and minipet afterward meant so much to her because of that.
