Brighton Early

WHO: Leigh Brighton (Ka-ray-zee) with Mordekai Kantor (Rookeries).
WHEN: Early February, 2014
WHERE: Leigh's novelty shoppe, The Shy Violet.
WEATHER: There's a blessedly thin layer of late winter snow over Barton; chilly, but only mildly breezy.

It was a longer haul than expected to get between the outskirts of Barton to somewhere inside of it. That being said, the last time Mordekai had purposefully visited Barton, he had a car, not a bike and the godless public transportation system. He was also bringing a basketful of food and a tray with a silver platter, which he didn't realize Duncan owned until four hours ago, when he left the house.

He also had to write down the directions of and memorize the route to The Shy Violet. By the time he got off of the subway, he couldn't decipher what he'd written. As a result, he got lost around Barton for another hour. He left in the morning expecting to get to Leigh's house early, drop off his gifts, apologize, and be on his way. He reckoned she wouldn't want to see him much, after all these years.

By the time he reached the entrance of the Violet, it was well into the afternoon, and his clothes were dusted and soggy with considerable layers of snow, melted or otherwise. Mordekai stared up at the name Shy Violet and read over it three times, just to soak in the familiarity and confirm that this was the right place. He admired the baubles at the front window while locking up his bike by the street, then pushed the door open as quietly as he could, though shoes weren't as kind to the idea. The sound of squeaky soles sounded against the floor.

Mordekai adjusted the grip of the food basket in his hand and the platter beneath his arms. He looked up and around the walls to admire the store, and he couldn't help but laugh to himself.

"This place hasn't changed one bit..."

As the door to the shop opened it sighed out warm air before blocking out the cold of the snow outside as it closed. The Shy Violet was always kept at a comfortable temperature, especially in winter, as the owner wasn't partial to chilly weather. The interior of the place was heavily decorated, and very homey. The walls were painted an appropriate shade of violet, and wooden furniture filled the space as displays for the various novelties for sale.

The Violet was quiet, however, without anyone currently visiting the shop other than the man who has just passed through the front door. After the small bell attached to the threshold jingled at Mordekai's arrival, a voice could be heard calling from in back, through a door just behind the register desk.

"Welcome--! I'll be right out," came the shout, followed by the sound of cardboard boxes being rearranged and moved about,"Feel free to look around!"

Mordekai wandered quietly through the Violet's aisles as its owner was preoccupied. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and stared at a few ornaments here and there; just as he reached out to pick up a paper bird, a familiar voice sounded from out back.

It was difficult for him to tell if he was getting easily distracted, or if he was prolonging the inevitable; either way, his answer wasn't immediate. His smile grew quickly, despite any nervousness that was following him around the whole trip; he walked closer to the register to wait.

"Don't have t'tell me twice! 'Ow much for the birds?" He glanced down at his free hand, which now held the paper bird in question. He set the food basket and platter down at the counter to better observe.

Following the sounds of a few more boxes being stacked, the voice called out again, now growing more loud and clear as it approached the threshold behind the counter.

"The paper mache ones? Those are are about to go on sale actually... it's hard to believe people distinctly buy 'winter' and 'spring' birds by breed," a small laugh came from the woman who was now wandering back into the shop, taking off an apron as she did," Those old ones are 5000g now--"

When she turned to smile at the new customer, she had to pause and stare. It was just for a moment, but the surprise was truly unexpected and left her doubting her ability to identify her guest. That voice and face were unmistakable, however, and her previous smile had now returned a bit wider.

"Wait-- Mordekai? Oh my god," she chimed, cautiously moving closer," What brings you to Barton...? I never thought I'd run into you here--"

"5k for these guys? That's a li'l cheap, ain't it?" He looked up from the bird as the sound of Leigh's footsteps grew louder. He smiled and set the bird down on the counter for the bit as the woman prepared to greet him, the customer. It was clear that she didn't recognize him, not yet, so he waited patiently, his smile growing into a grin.

Mordekai managed to laugh at Leigh's momentary staring-- once she finally said his name, he waved once. "Leigh! 'Ey!"

He beamed at the woman and shrugged; he gestured down at the basket and tray, "Dunno, li'l bird tol' me over yonder that you had a birthday..." he pushed the basket closer to Leigh, "Jus' wanted to drop these off for ya. I don't wanna bug you or nothin', meant to be here earlier, but I got kinna lost..."

The blond stood upright again and chuckled sheepishly. "For a couple'a hours."

Leigh's smile widened into a grin as he waved and explained the sudden visit. She only took a moment to glance down at the basket he'd brought, more immediately distracted by the urge to walk around the counter to get a better look at his familiar face.

"How could stopping by to bring me things ever be bugging me," she chuckled," I'm just surprised to see you! You're always welcome!"

Furrowing her brows at his mention of getting lost, she then laughed a little. "A couple hours? How did you manage that?" The woman smirked at him, before raising a hand to give him a soft pat on the arm. "Thank you for making all that effort to come out here... Do you want to come in and catch up for a little bit? I'm just about to close up shop for today!"

Mordekai only managed a quiet laugh as he flustered toward the floor at Leigh's response-- he offered a meek response in return. You're always welcome-- that hit him more than he'd expected, and he stared toward the floor in thought until he piped up with a quiet chuckle.

"Misreadin' maps an' a little magic," he responded; he smirked back at Leigh and returned to smiling wide when Leigh gave him a pat on the arm. His smile faltered a little uncertainly, but his eyes met with Leigh's, and he shrugged. He looked down at the basket and finally let go of the handle-- dropping it off and leaving had been a bit of an anchor for him in all this. He didn't expect to talk to her so soon, but there was no way he could turn Leigh down.

"Ah-- yeah... I mean, if you're sure," he adjusted his beanie and smiled a little lopsidedly up at her, "I don't wanna waste your time or nothin'."
