As soon as the sun started to set and the heat of the day began to fade, music began. The harpers were each taking turns to entertain and provide music for the dance. Even dragonriders who had been apprenticed to the craft before being Searched were in on it. With the heat gone, the people of Ista seemed to come alive. Energetic songs were played. People were dragged to the large dancing circle that had been marked off the day before by men and women alike.

An energetic dance was taking place with much twirling and tossing. Harpers were on the stage; some in customary harper blue, others in brightly colored gather finery. Voices joined in a familar song. The stage was lit by glows, as well as the rounded tables on the outside. Vinters were dutifully delivering wineskins as quickly as they were able.

This thread takes place early evening and will continue through the night. Any harper trained character (dragonrider or otherwise) is invited to play a tune or song! Just make sure it's either from the books or has been rewritten to fit the setting with credits to the original artist if not your own work.
At the end of the event, there will be a raffle with rewards for those who have participated.

Melly couldn't believe it. She couldn't believe her brother was such a bore that he was going to actually try skipping out on the Gather. Well, she wasn't having any of that. Not when he'd promised to dance with his girlfriend. Not when she wanted to make him dance with her as well!

"Melly- Melly hang on- Will you slow down? I'm coming already!" R'rick huffed as he was towed along by his sister. She might have been tiny, but what she lacked in size she made up with a determination that he knew better than to argue with. Somehow, Melly had gotten under the impression that he was trying to skip out on the gather. Far from it, he was just - well, he had napped through part of it. He really didn't like big social gatherings. They were full of people who wanted to talk to him, or worse dance with him. There was only one person, other than his sister, who he would dance with.

As they approached the crowd of people, he suddenly became self conscious and carefully removed Melly's hand from his sleeve. "Will you not drag me? You're messing up my shirt."

Melly shot him a soft grin. "Oh, now you're concerned with how you look, hm? I told you it'd be worth it to wear your new boots!"

"No, that's quite different. Wearing the new boots are impractical. How will I dance in them when my toes are being pinched?"

"Your toes aren't being pinched, don't be dramatic. Come on!" With that, she grabbed his hand and dove into the group of people already dancing. When R'rick opened his mouth, she shushed him and placed his free hand on her hip.

R'rick swallowed hard, his expression noticeably nervous. When was the last time he did this with someone other than Lira? Melly always got too excited and moved too fast. He'd trod all over her foot, and it served her right! For such a tiny thing she was much too bossy towards him. He took a stilling breath and tried to remember how this couldn't be any more terrifying than the first time he'd sat on Tieth's back and felt the muscles rippling beneath him. Before he could quite gather himself, though, Melly was moving and pulling him along.

They continued that way for a couple of songs, and R'rick was finally able to feel like he was smoothly matching his sister's steps. That is, until he caught a glimpse that made his movements stutter to a halt.

Melly bumped straight into his chest. "Ouch!" Then she followed his gaze and let out a soft sigh. "Oh fine, Roddy, go! I'll just find another partner."

R'rick smirked, though his eyes were still on his goal as he slipped off through the gathering crowd of people. He didn't bother to say a greeting before he enveloped her in a hug.

Ritsa felt like she was the last to appear to the gather. It had taken her far to long to procure a proper dress for the celebrations. She had even missed a meal in order to arrive at the special time. Her hair hung down in loose curls around her face. And she had even gone to the extent of making sure ever tiny inch of her was cleaned properly.

Her hazel eyes scanned about the crowds. She was nervous being here, but had been told it was proper protocol for a Candidate to appear. She wasn't sure she agreed with that notion but, be it as it was, she wasn't one to refuse the rulings of those higher ranked than herself. So here she was, surrounded by riders and Weyrfolk alike.

Chewing on her bottom lip subconsciously, Ritsa moved towards the outer edge of the group. It seemed she had appeared in time for the dancing. If that were the case she wouldn't mind settling for being a small wallflower. Part of her wondered why a gather had been called in the first place but she wasn't about to question it either. Tilting her head to the side as the first song of the dance rang in the air. The harpers were always good at their craft. She herself would never be skilled enough to be a harper, it required gifts you were born with, talents she herself could never posses.

Even then, she had heard life in the harper hall wasn't that easy for women. Licking her upper lip to moisten the dry skin Ritsa moved away from the main crowd of people.

Becka didn't know why she was here, she really didn't, what she wanted to do was go back to her room and keep an eye on the fire lizard egg she'd been given, she wanted to make sure it was safe and wasn't hatching without her being there. With a sigh she forced herself to turn her thoughts away from the egg and back to the matter at hand, which was, she couldn't dance, at least, she thought she probably couldn't very well, she sure as shards couldn't sing, she sounded like a strangled wherry when she tried but she could hum. She shook her head, Anyway, she thought, she'd promised T'rel she'd be here. She didn't know why she had, maybe because she'd been so excited by the news her best friend was going to be a father.. she's have said yes to almost anything... ALMOST.... she wasn't THAT stupid. Oh shards, she really shouldn't have had that glass of bubbly wine or whatever it was. She was never one to drink .. at all but she hadn't been able to resist celebrating her friend's impending fatherhood.

She wasn't about to go and waltz into the middle of the dancing area though, she, like several young men and women that weren't overly confident, were sticking towards the outside of the crowd, she wasn't trying to avoid anyone in particular, she just didn't want to be shoved about near the main action. She'd stay near the back until her head wasn't so ... woozy.

F'nbar watched Ashlyn and T'anis with quiet amusement. They coupled up pretty quickly. he thought, with a slight inward grin. F'nbar looked toward the stage. For now the circle was empty. There had been one or two people dancing there before, but they all seemed to have broken off for now and there was an awkward pause as the musicians prepared to start the next tune with no one on the floor.

But, happy to dance, even if no one else was, F'nbar struck out first, hoping that breaking the empty circle would lead to others doing the same. Now it was just a question of whether his partner was as willing.

He kind of understood people's hesitation. The first ones out inevitably had everyone's eyes on them, even if for the briefest of moments, and that could be daunting. And, there was always that slight fear that no one else would follow and you'd be stuck in the middle by yourself, looking like an idiot. But that kind of thing had never really bothered him. If it would break the ice, he was happy to look like an idiot for everyone else's sake.

Even so, he'd prefer not to. After all, it was hard to dance alone. He turned to Kaila and held out a hand. "May I have this dance?" he asked her, graciously.

Kieza stood to the edge of the large gathering of people. Some were familiar, some were complete strangers - which made her rather nervous. Turning her brown eyes away, she leaned against the mottle green hide of her Dragon, Nyxbath. "I don't like crowds..." She murmured, looking up at the narrow head that peered down at her with swirling eyes. Me neither, KiezaMine. But you cannot deny it is good to socialize. At least every once in a while... Nyxbath snorted and lowered her head down next to her charge, a wing flicking out to settle around the nervous girl. Kieza smiled at the assured feeling her dragon was giving her, and all her woes seemed to drift away as she snuggled into her dragon's warm side.

Nyxbath knew exactly how to make the world around her seem small and insignificant, and knew how to make Kieza feel better. Since the Hatching, they had been inseparable from each other. Though... they did seem to distance themselves from all of their weyrmates.

Melira was rather surprised to find a pair of arms wrapping around her. She had been about to make her way towards Kieza and ask for a dance. She recognized the embrace: so Melly had convinced R'rick to attend afterall. She didn't look up, and instead smiled. "Hello, love," she greeted him. "I thought your sister would get you to come. Can't have you missing out on the excitement!" She beamed up at him. "Will you dance with me?" She asked, raising a hand to his cheek. "Melly cleaned you up nicely," she teased. "You're even wearing your new boots! I'll have to congratulate her."

The greenrider had been resigned to the fact that her Weyrmate would not be attending the gather, despite his promise to dance. "You look very handsome, Roddy," she complimented him, taking her eyes off his for a moment to study what she assumed was his sister's handy work. She would have to ask Melly how she had convinced him. "If you won't dance, maybe you'll visit the stalls with me, hm? I have a few marks. They're burning a hole in my bag here." She patted the small satchel she had draped over her shoulder. "Where's Tieth?" She asked, looking for the dragon in question. "Not dancing, is he?" She glanced towards the heights, "With so many people, he's liable to crush someone."

She grinned, taking his hand. "Come on, Roddy! I'll give you back to Melly later!"

Kaila tried to smooth the light brown dress that had been a gift from her mother. Maith had not seemed to like the dress at first, but it was one of the greenrider's finer dress. The green had insisted that she try to dance. Kaila had agreed, but actually planned on being a wallflower for it. She much preferred looking among the stalls for stuff.

Dancing meant she had to be graceful and look lovely. She was not a graceful dancer. Maith though had decided to nap in their weyr, telling her to go dance while the green dragon slept. Kaila blinked at F'nbar before looking at his hand for a moment.

Mine, dance. Kaila smiled and nodded to the other rider, hoping she didn't end up stepping on his feet because of her clumsy dancing skills. Taking his hand, she tried to remember what dances her mother had taught her before Kaila became a rider.

"Hn." R'rick couldn't help but grunt at the mention of excitement. This really wasn't the type of event he was interested in. Of course, he'd been at the weyr long enough to know that sometimes he had to sit through social events that he didn't much care for. This, however, was a bit stranger. Gathers reminded him of the festivals that Melly used to sneak out of the house to attend. The memory caused him to sigh lightly.

"Cleaned me-? I was perfectly clean before," he grouched. He might be here to make her happy, but that didn't mean he felt exactly at ease surrounded by so many people. But her hand was warm on his cheek, so he let his voice fade to a mumble. He was quiet a moment as he considered her offer, then glanced toward the group of dancers. "Let's go to the stalls first." Taking her hand, he steered her away from the music and dancing. "Tieth has been told to stay far away and not to cause trouble." Something in his voice hinted that he didn't exactly expect the brown to listen. "Besides, I'm to understand that dragons aren't welcome at this sort of event."

J'nes had managed to pack up his wares and leave them with someone he could trust to watch over them. He would have loved to continue peddling his wares, but he had promised someone a dance. And a chance to get a bite to eat and see a bit of the Gather beyond his own stall wouldn't hurt, either.

He made his way to the area that had been cleared for dancing, then wandered around the edge, looking around. Was she here yet? They hadn't exactly decided a time or place to meet, but she hadn't stopped by his stall again so he figured it was time to go looking for her.

"Hn?" Melira echoed, smirking. She knew well, Roddy's dislike of crowds. She had never been particularly bothered by them, reveling as she did in the gossip of the Weyr. "No, you certainly look better than when I left our weyr," she teased him. She placed a kiss to his cheek, leaning forward on her toes to do so. "I'm glad you came, Roddy," she said, smiling up at him warmly. "I know you don't like them, but Turnover doesn't feel right without you." She wanted to catch a look at the ghosts tonight. They had been particularly bright the turn before.

"Stalls first?" She allowed him to lead her, beaming. "You hungry? Let's grab a bubblypie or two. Maybe something savory..." Gathering was hungry work! "Did you hear though, Rumith's rider is expecting! I'll tell Melly later. I'm sure she'll be excited to hear!" Melira didn't expect R'rick to recognize the dragon's name, nor to have heard the news. It wasn't something that made the entire Weyr buzz: babies were born daily, and had been for thousands of turns. Still! Melly would enjoy the news, she was friends with the bronzerider, wasn't she?

She gave R'rick's hand a squeeze. "You really do look nice, Roddy," she said. "I feel like we're Weyrlings again, just itching for romance."

Joleen was waiting for J'nes off to the side, watching the dancers. She looked up and spotted him. A smile crossed her face. So he had decided to come after all! She hadn't expected him to stand her up, but to meet a man so prompt: that was new! "J'nes!" She called to him, waving. She made her way through the crowd, towards him. "I thought you'd be coming later," she admitted, once she reached him. "Did you find someone to finish out your stall for you? Er. Do you want to dance? We could grab something to eat, too." Shards, when had communicating become difficult?

"I hope you have numbweed handy. I don't want to permenently damage your toes."

R'rick smiled softly, an expression that he only ever wore when his weyrmate was around. She was glad he was here. Well, it wasn't as if he'd doubted she would be. Maybe he had. Just a little. She did get awfully carried away with such events, milling about and gossiping and buying things to fill their weyr. He was sure she could have fun without dragging him along so that he had to make awkward conversation with her friends. A groan nearly slipped from him at the thought.

A different sound came from him, however, at the mention of a bubblypie - a rumble from his stomach. His small smile slipped into a look of mild embarrassment. "Something savory would be good." This was what he got for coming so late. The thought of food was so distracting that he almost missed the next thing she said.

"Rumith?" he echoed, his brow furrowing as he tried to recall whose dragon that was. That was a name he was supposed to know, why was his memory refusing to help him?

He wracked his memory for a minute, then turned to ask her whose dragon that was. Melly had so many friends that it was likely he didn't know the rider, but the fuzzy tendrils of a recollection that he could grasp were insisting that he should. But she'd already switched the topic of conversation, and he could only give her a surprised blink. "Uh-" It always caught him off guard when she complimented him, especially in public. Wasn't that his job? Melly was always insisting it was, so why did it seem backwards?

He dragged his eyes down her form, taking in her own appearance, then raised his gaze again with a light smirk. "You look nicer," he decided. Then one of his eyebrows raised in a questioning look. "Is that a new dress?" He slipped an arm around her and planted his hand on her waist.

Naressa was sitting with the other harpers and she was adorn in the best blue dress she could pay with the few marks that she had and her hair was pulled back in a braid as she played her harp along with the other members. They finished up a medium paced song and now it was time for something a little different.

She was going to sing.

She was nervous, whether it showed or not was a different story. She had sung alone to herself as well with the other harpers, however. She hadn't sung in front of everyone else yet. Let alone other candidates. She gulped and she strummed a few notes of her harp as the others with their instruments chimed in. She cleared her throat slightly and she started to hum and finally, she sang.

"Oh, we must give honor to those dragons heed
In thought and in favor, in word and in deed
For our world will be lost or our world will be saved
From those dangers that are by the dragons braved.

Weaver and farmer and miner and smith
Tanner and herdsman, all lord holders with
Our harpers attuned to the lessons we learn-
Remember our duty to those who save Pern.

We'll nurture our dragons, the queens rule their bands;
Their clutches will shell on the Hatching Ground sands.
We'll Search out the riders who will love and endure
With their dragonmates keeping our planet secure.

We rise from the Weyr on our dragonmates bold,
Aloft in the sky, Bronze, Brown Blue, Green and Gold.
Wheeling and turning, the hungry Threads burning
A dragon must fly when there are Threads in the sky.

Oh, Lord of the Hold, you must keep your charge sure
Behind metal doors, with your people secure.
See well to the herdbeast, keep cellars well stored
Lest Fall leave you hungry and Holdless and scored.

Oh, we must give honor to those dragons heed
In thought and in favor, in word and in deed,
For our world will be lost or our world will be saved
From those dangers that are by the dragons braved."

She forgot how long that song was and she finished strong which surprised her because sometimes she faded out but she seemed to get it that time. She wanted a break from the playing of instruments and she gave a small smile to the group and stood up and walked over to the refreshment table. She needed a drink.

Melira fixed her weyrmate with an accusing stare. "You forgot to eat, didn't you?" She led him to a stall and purchased several bubblypies, as well as a plate filled with thick meats and tubers. She handed the plate to him. "There. Eat every bit! This is turnover, Roddy! You're going to end up thin as a tunnelsnake." She poked him in the ribs playfully. "Oh, I wouldn't expect you to remember. She's that harper girl Tarry fell for. I suppose I should call him by his proper name, now..." She made a face, with a playful wrinkle of her nose. She had never gotten used to the custom of shortening a man's name when they Impressed. She supposed it had its practicalities--but it made it awfully difficult to find a nickname that incorporated their new name. "Melly will be excited enough for both of you."

Oh, he'd noticed the dress! At last! Melira beamed up at him. "I bought it for the gather," she said, beaming. "You don't think its too green?" Melira was concerned about wearing green to Turnover. It was supposed to be bad luck at weddings--but what about gathers? She moved out of his hold, and turned around slowly so he could view the dress fully. "You like it?"

~

Ionan was cranky. He was hot, he was tired, and he was alone. He'd lost Cesa near the stalls, and ended up where he'd started. He spotted several familar faces, however; the face that stopped the oncoming tears in their tracks belonged to Becka. She was a friend of his brother's, and that made her his friend too. Brothers were supposed to share, weren't they? And if T'rel wasnt here to show the healer a good time, he certainly could! Ionan made his way towards the healer apprentice. He wrapped his arms around her.

"Becka! Becka, won't you dance with me? Won't you? Please? I got seperated from Cesa and Tiry and I haven't got anyone to look at everything with!"
