The office belonged to Stephen, generally know as McDreamy, the Nice One, Prince Charming: Homosexy MD Edition. At nine in the morning, he was perched on the end of his desk, sipping Starbucks, and smiling down at an unremarkable woman in a Death coat. She watched him with a mild smile, and looked familiar. She was someone seen often, but never enough to stand out, always in the middle but never at the center.

To say that Taym's heart sank at receiving the text would have been an understatement: a panicky, trapped sensation descended on him immediately, and he wasn't sure which fear was stronger: that they'd bumped up his deadline, or that they 'd put him on a scale. There had been no agreement about intermittent weigh-ins, and he was not fully prepared to be combative if they were going to be forced on him.

He let himself in after a short, sharp knock, and the fact that there were two people present made his hackles rise. The realization that one of them was wearing neither Life nor Moon emblems was sufficient to add bewilderment to the cocktail of negative emotions he was cultivating, and he shot both of them a dirty look and a sarcastic salute but said nothing as he collapsed into a chair without asking for permission first, still reeking of the cigarette he'd sucked down to steady his nerves.

Lawrence didn't get correspondence. His name had never been on a single piece of paperwork, bank account or passport in decades. The man known as Lawrence officially didn't exist. It was why receiving a text emblazoned with that name jarred him so deeply, past the masks to the core of who he was. It was clearly an official capacity, he didn't care about which faction it entailed, he didn't care about much.

His Chantelle attire was neatly packed away, as was the attire that marked him out as Jan. It left one set of clothing, purchased on his leave time and never worn since it was fitted. When he had it on sleek crisp designer lines framed his extremely slender frame and complimented the neat and hardly worn trainee coat he shrugged on over it. It was all in all an unremarkable outfit, but unremarkable had never meant that one couldn't be perfectly tidy.

The room had plenty of mirrors and he took a few moments to arrange himself just so, fussing pedantic over layering. His white-blonde hair was still short, recovering from the involuntary buzz-cut inflicted on him by acid. He wore no expression at all, as if someone had severed the wires connecting his brain to his face, without a mask on he had no requirement for it. His eyes, without the forced sparkle and enthusiasm of Chantelle or cheeky glint of Jan were cold and almost dead looking, the paleness doing nothing to assuage the unnerving effect.

He showed up precisely on time and entered without hesitation. He briskly took in those present and when he spoke it was with a chilly and very English accent.

"Good morning."

After both has arrived and taken a seat, Stephen smiled like a movie star and then took his own, Jane remained standing. "This will be brief. You've both been flagged for a certain type of mission." She began with tone and expression entirely ordinary and then slipped into something more sympathetic. Jane looked down at the folder in her hands as she continued, "I'm sorry to hear about your daughter, by the way. If you'd like to attend the funeral, it's being held tomorrow. An escort can be arranged."

Sudden ice in his veins and Taym wasn't breathing: numbed and shaken simultaneously, he looked to Lawr and had no shame for the selfishness of his thought: let it be someone else's daughter.

But Lawrence's face was a mask, unmoved, and no father could look that way in response to that news and Taym swallowed and managed a shaky: "I'm sorry?"

Because it had to be a mistake.

Lawr listened intently to Jane's comments and his expression didn't flicker in the least. He was marginally more distressed by the idea of a mission than the mention of his daughter's funeral, one posed a danger to his personal well-being. The other did not.

Instead he took his time, flicking his cold gaze to Taym as he spoke, fixed and frozen.

He didn't say anything at all.

"Your other child has since been relocated, Lawrence. Their location will not be given to you." Glancing up she gave him a look that, while still sympathetic, was also firm and somewhat judgmental. "I hope you understand why you can no longer be trusted with that information."

And then the thaw. He had no room for sympathy or pity: relief occupied too much space. He swallowed hard, and felt sick, and said nothing, and tried unsuccessfully to will his hands not to shake. He pushed them into his pockets instead, and whatever surly combativeness he'd entered the room with was gone: he huddled into his seat and examined his knees and breathed, carefully, slowly, not too deep (don't show anyone how much it hurts, ever).

"I will go to the funeral." he replied, something close to a flicker of cold fury dancing in his eyes at the Name. His name. Said aloud as if it was nothing at all. He disowned it. He relinquished it. It was him and yet was not him. Flouted before him it brought him the closest he got to rage. Even the staved off hurt of the man beside him brought him no joy, nothing brought him joy, and right now the void was beginning to irritate him, like an itch on a phantom limb.

"And of course I understand." He understood and he did not care, only regretted that it would not be a source of further entertainment down the line.

Clearing his throat, Stephen shot Jane a look, and took over the conversation, "Anyway, the reason you boys are here is because your weight class qualifies you for Sahara duty. That territory is primarily Famine, who for what I should hope are obvious reasons, prefer targets that are extremely healthy. People with your ahh," his eyes flicked over them in professional assessment, "physique, have less to work with. Slim pickins as the saying goes."

Jane handed them each a folder, the inside of which contained a diet and workout regimen for each man as the doctor continued, "That said, you could both stand to lose a bit more to maximize that potential and hedge your bets against that clan's notice. You," he nodded toward Taym, "...are just about there, three to five pounds less and I think you'll be fine. You'll have a bit more work to do," he pointed to Lawrence, "...but it's really your safest option. We have some people out there, but in about a month and a half we'll need to swap them out. It's rough in the desert, especially when you start out in that condition, and you two are on the shortlist for replacements."

Taym looked up from the aghast face he was making at the diet plan.

(What fun is there when someone else is making you torture yourself? No more points to make. thought Fiona drily)

"If they're going to need replacing in a month and a half what are you trying to imply about our ******** tenure?"

Jane gave him an encouraging smile, "It means we try to keep you alive. Two months on, two months off to fully recover and rest."

Once again Lawr found himself deeply rankled by the perceptions of others. He was the present weight he was because it was important for Chantelle and the level of androgyny he wanted, if anything he was below his desirable weight thanks to the heinous state of the canteen on this rock, back home before Wonder Park he could eat little but he could eat well.

If he was going to be shipped off to the Sahara and set in the firing line of a clan of creatures he owed a murderous debt to, he was going to make sure with absolute certainty that he was of as much substance as a shadow. Conforming to physical demands was what he did, and this sounded interesting, if nothing else.

He didn't even question survival. He would survive, there was an ironclad certainty of that. If he did not, then nothing mattered anyway.

"Will we be paid in accordance with the risks involved?" he said, flicking through the folder indifferently.

"******** the money! Two months," spat Taym before either of them could answer Lawrence. "Two ******** months? What exactly are we doing for two ******** months in the middle of a desert?"

Too much time. Too much big empty space, no libraries to hide in when the itinerary wasn't sufficiently filled to ward off boredom and idle thoughts: ******** the money; doing missions was after all his job and Lawrence's focus on compensation needled him. There were bigger questions.

Huge, empty questions.

Taym got another cold look, but there was a slant of confusion in his thoughts. He couldn't quite understand what the issue with two months was. It would be two months spent exercising control and difficult questions of survival. Two months not spent merely toying with low level entertainment garnered from his peers in lieu of ambition and freedom.

He assumed it was one of those emotional attachment things.
