Thezil led her by the hand off the train, picking her up when it suited his needs. His movements were still jilted, but they were no longer so out of place, here in a land where the undead reigned supreme. The ruins were obviously their namesake, but did not appear to be close to falling down atop their heads, artificial or otherwise.

The professors explained the accommodations and gear that Amityville would provide for their safety. Thezil disapproved of them, and disapproved of Tink accepting anything, too. In the end, he gave his own Terminus Token to her, and carried a spare set of supplies that a professor had insisted he take, even if he didn't use them. Something about liabilities.

They set up against a wall, as all the good corners were taken, and she'd uttered the most quiet of "Oh"s at Thezil's proposed idea of sleeping outside.

"Do YOu wANt tO USe thE BuGs? Or WAlK?" A brief pause, accompanied by a series of pictures of a grasshopper jumping through dead grass, of swirling sand, accompanied by the distorted jazz she found pleasant.

He was not kind, but he could navigate the ways of it.

"Oh," she said, and bravely, for the second time already, made herself arrive at a conclusion. "Let's walk. So we can take our time."

She had apparently already made this decision. There was no longer a petite, curly-headed girl by Thezil's side, but instead a staring, unblinking lamb, its eyes glazed and clouded and the fur of its neck matted with dirt and dark red. By Halloween standards it was cute. By the standards of human society it was no wonder such a thing had been feared. She had only three limbs, but this did not hinder her in a sudden display of energetic and excited pronking in a wobbly loop around Thezil's feet. She was obviously looking forward to having an adventure, never having really strayed far from her home in Amityville--not even as far as the Academy until the holiday open house. "Maybe we'll get lost," she suggested, in tones of mingled horror and pleasure. "Maybe they'll have to come find us and we'll be dissolved in the belly of--look!" she interrupted, sproinging off in an apparently-random direction.

You discover the corner of a tilting building peeking through the sand. A single window offers you entry and leads you into what remains of a large art museum. Many of the remaining pieces have been broken or vandalized. While wandering its galleries, you find 3 Terminus Tokens.

With every word Tink uttered, Thezil grew more and more grim. He played the low whining creak of rusted metal grinding together, and did his best not to trod upon her. The ghoul wobbled around in her natural form, her missing arm more evident in her manoeuvres. She embarked into the sand, and Thezil followed her mismatched hoof-prints, far off the beaten path.

"GeTTinG LoST iS unLiKELy," he said, flatly, turning his volume up so that Tink could hear him even if she was further ahead. "Do NOt FiXATe oN tHE ImPROBable."

She led them to a structure in disrepair, leaned over and buried in sand. Before she could dart in through the window, Thezil swiftly picked her up, cradling her and her three legs with a firm sort of security. With an unsteady motion, he kicked out the glass shards that edged the window, making it less dangerous to step through. He put her down, and followed her into what revealed itself to be a museum. It was ancient and covered in graffiti, and what few paintings remained were torn and faded.

Her hooves clipped against the stones in a way that echoed dramatically, much to her apparent pleasure, and for a few seconds it seemed she was more interested in stotting gracelessly through the wide hallways than she was in gazing at the walls. But soon she was caught up, and she'd apparently forgotten about Thezil entirely as she wandered from torn canvas to broken frame to battered sculpture, her tail twitching constantly, murmuring the occasional dreamy "oh" and becoming quite smitten with a portrait of a family of Reapers with their heads and the heads of their familias raggedly slashed from the canvas, hanging down by a few fibers over their necks in twisted shreds. This she stared at it for quite a while, lost in thought, sitting on the ground with her limbs splayed out and her head tipped to one side.

"That's very lovely," she said aloud and gravely, and then she startled, the act of talking reminding her she had company. Maybe getting lost was unlikely for Thezil, but it was obvious that a couple of distracted, alone minutes would be sufficient to send Tink off into the great unknown. "Do you see anything you like, Thezil?" As though the gallery were functional; as though they could bring home a souvenir.

Thezil held nothing sacred, especially not a museum whose integrity had already been compromised. He dragged his fingers along the dusty walls, content to catalogue this trip by the tactile sensations of his fingers: as they ran against tacky dry wall, over broken picture frames. He pricked a finger on an errant shard of glass, and Thezil's touch left an ichorous black ooze behind as he continued to drag his hands along the memories of a forgotten time.

He kept an antennae tuned on Tink's movements, as if merely listening to her quiet twitches and tail swishes (instead of her breath: the dead had no need to breathe) would let him keep track of the ghoul's whereabouts.

"YOu KNoW," Thezil boomed, sternly, from across the room, "hOW I feEL oF TrINKeTs." He scuffled back to where she was, and leaned down enough to show her the three Terminus Tokens he had picked up, for her sake, with no small amount of irritation. "FouND THEse. YoU cAN hoLD theM LatER."

"Oh," said Tink, and then, for good measure: "Goodness. Thank you."

She hesitated, and perhaps felt that Thezil's irritation was having to fill his pockets for her. She adopted a shape more amenable to carrying trinkets, taking the tokens from his hands and putting them into her oversized pockets and saying in a somewhat more subdued tone: "Thank you." And another hesitation before she wound her fingers in his, lifting their joined hands to examine the black ooze clinging there, without comment but with great interest and an apparent lack of concern.

"We can go somewhere you want to go now," she offered meekly. "I bleed red," she added dreamily, abstractedly, as she again lifted his hand to inspect it.

He waited for her, distaste growing as she pocketed the tokens, his screen bleeding red in a quiet, steady visual. Thezil did not possess many manners, so did not offer a 'you're welcome' to the ghoul in return.

"I sAw. AlL oVEr yoUR nECk," the boil said, and gripped her two legged figure by the shoulder again, tightly. He manoeuvred her back outside the museum, letting her examine his fingers all the while. Tink had looked upon his seams, once, or at least where they would have been, if Thezil had been a patchwork. A collection of variegated limbs and pieces, pulled together by the force of one thing: an urge to find a head.

It lived with him, constantly. This head was not his real one, and he looked for it wherever he could-- but there was nothing that felt familiar, not in all of Halloween.

There was a loneliness, in him, that was never quenched.

"Do NOt CaRe whEre we gO nExT," Thezil announced, but led them through a tunnel nonetheless, aiming for somewhere that would shelter them from the buffeting sands and the scorching heat: it was closer to noon, and the orangey ball in the sky was making it uncomfortably hot.

She was quiet again, but any offense was, with Tink, quickly forgotten. Maybe this was why the strange pair had somehow ended up together here: he hurt feelings but hers were quickly mended.

This time it was Tink who tentatively touched the walls, everywhere but on the black ink, which felt important in a way that made her reluctant to assay contact. Instead she read and re-read the words very gravely--aloud once--by the light of Thezil's screen.

"D'you think," she asked, in the same lilting meandering tone with which she said nearly everything, "we're supposed to add a tally mark down? Like a guestbook."

Thezil listened to her talk, repeating her words in snippets of sound collected from the various channels. The distorted audio bytes reverberating around them, every syllable crackling with static.

"YeS," he said to her, blunt, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. It was material: unnecessary, but it was the creator's intent. "I dO noT wiSH to. YOu ShouLd." These words held a grave sort of importance, unsettling and unclean.

As though it were the most natural thing in the world, Tink reached to take his hand. She had no ink; she had nothing sharp. She rubbed her thumb over his pricked finger to make the inky black well up fresh--she didn't need much, and he'd told her to make the mark, after all--and shook her head.

"No. Do you?" She held up her finger and added: "It has to match," as she went to add two marks to the row of black hashes. "Maybe the other ones are someone else's. Or a bunch of someones."

She bent to smell them. This, too, she did as though it were the most natural thing in the world.

She took a violet hand in hers, small and delicate and careful.

"No," Thezil said, and let the ghoul do what she'd been put in Halloween to do, "bUT I dESiRe tO." It was interesting enough to want him break his rule against memorialising things: to take a picture of it, to remember it in trinket form. But he was pushing the boundaries of his creed far enough with the park that signified his presence.

He moved to leave, but above them came a wicked sound of collapse.

Her natural form, though smaller, was clumsier--Tink grabbed for Thezil's hand as she attempted to dart out of the way, and was rewarded for her hesitation by a sharp crack of some twisted bit of steel catching her on the head. The sound she made was something between a little cry and a bleat.

"See," she said, her eyes welling up with tears but her voice unchanged from its usual dreamy state, a smile quivering up. "Red."

Thezil lurched out of the way, but Tink was not so fortunate, given her cry and the blood trickling down her forehead in a single, thin line.

He wiped away a tear with a bloodied hand, leaving a black smudge that swept across a cheekbone. His blood was sticky, like tar. It had worked well as ink for that fact.

"CaREfUL," Thezil commanded, and regardless of her cooperation, scooped her up into his arms, to carry in her natural form or her human one, whichever she wished. He had had quite enough of her antics, for a time.

The sound of running water caught his interest, and so Thezil descended into the damp underground, one hand on the railing. There was little light beneath the ground, save for the occasional collapsed ceiling tile that bled light from above.

It was fortunate that this head of his glowed.

She allowed herself to be carried on his hip with an arm around his neck, with nothing but another "oh," scrubbing her tearful eyes on the shoulder of his coat like a very young scareling might but avoiding the mark he'd left on her face, preserving it with care.

"Maybe someone can tell us who returns," she ventured, although the place appeared to be desolate. She was nothing if not optimistic. "Maybe when we go back we can ask Professor Brittel, maybe he knows everything. I bet he knows everything. Do you learn a lot?" she added. "At school, I mean."

Darkness all around as they went deeper into the tunnels. His skellyvision screen reflected off the cobblestone tiles, catching a bone in the wall here, a skull for a marker there.

The sound of water got louder.

"I wiLL aSk thE oTHErS tOO." Thezil had little faith in his instructors, but that applied to most beings. Teachers especially had a fixation on the past, on the possession of things.

"No."
