The Plains

REDMAPLEFORESTThe setting is a valley buried deep into a mountain range, being extremely flat and wide-open plain, covered in tall grass and wild flowers. The borders are surrounded by tall mountains and thick coniferous forests ascending their slopes, the only green in view are the trees that cover the lower part of the mountain. With snowcapped peaks, the mountains, though distant, still seem to be gargantuan, even for a mountain. There is a constant wind that shifts direction, depending on how it rolls over the side of the surrounding mountains. There is a small creek that passes through the middle of the plain, before morphing into a small river that grows as it climbs the mountain. The sky is crystal blue with moderate to heavy cloud cover, being mostly stratocumulus in nature. The temperature is mild to cool, and there is a moderate humidity to the air. Other than the slight noise emanating from the creek, not even the occasional bird chirp can be heard, there being no signs of wildlife that live in the valley.

Bright golden orbs starred lazily into the distance, lustrous black hair wavering slightly in the wind, flapping gently across her face and neck. Kaede sat patiently in the middle of the plane next to the creek, her eyes staring at the big nothing that rested both in front and all around her. In all of her years of existence, she wasn't used to being completely alone for any meaningful expanse of time, feeling conflicted as she finally was left to just her thoughts; well that and the bottle of sake that she had brought with her from her shack, though it had been downed long ago. Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a long rolled cigarette, the paper being a dark blue where the tobacco was oddly a glossy gold. Putting the paper between her lips delicately, she grabbed a match from the same pocket and scratched it against a nearby rock, the sulfuric tip combusting violently before settling at a low flame. Raising the match to light the tip, she tossed the wooden remains of the match into the stream, watching it float away lazily as she relished the first puff of her cigarette, exhaling a thick cloud of darker blue smoke. The tobacco had been crossed with the same plant she uses for her shack, giving it a lighter, more fruity taste while decreasing the temperature of the smoke produced. The smoke rose slowly before dissipating into the air, her eyes following the trail before it was lost to the wind.

Standing, the monstrous woman placed her hands on her hips before cracking her neck to both side, then proceeding to go through a basic stretching exercise before her hands rose above her head, vertically stretching with an echoing crack of most of her vertebrae. Groaning briefly, her hand shot down to massage her lower back, an annoyed expression surfacing to her face before it disappeared, her pupils narrowing at the first form of life she had seen since arriving to the plain. Walking slowly over to a delicate purple wildflower, she crouched down beside it, smiling widely as she immediately became entranced with the regal blue and red butterfly that had taken residence atop the petals. A lithe but large hand extended slowly, coming to rest beside the flower. Taking another drag on the cigarette that hadn't left her lips, she exhaled it through her nose, watching the butterfly turn toward her before taking flight. She sighed lightly, looking down as she thought it was flying away, but instead it circled her head and landed on her still outstretched finger. Adjusting it's gorgeous wings a couple of times before rotating, it almost seemed to bow to her before flying off, having an important meeting with another flower that he needed to attend. Smiling at her oddness, she rolled backward and into a horizontal sedentary position, raising a hand to take the cigarette from her lips, exhaling a large cloud of smoke before she sighed lazily.

Sitting up abruptly, her eyes darted in front of her before turning back to the mountain, standing up to begin running in the direction her eyes had locked on to, her speed outside of Shunpo still highly difficult to follow with the naked eye. She had thought she saw another type of animal, though upon reaching the edge of the forest she saw and heard nothing, leaping into the branches as she scouted from above, before searching for tracks left in the pine-needles that caked the Earth beneath her. Sighing, now slightly upset, she meandered back to her original spot, kicking a couple of pebbles into the river, her plans of playing with a cute fluffy critter thwarted by the complete lack of animal-based biodiversity. She returned to her old sake bottle and smiled, quickly removing the cork and slipping it into her pocket. A wide smile flashed onto her lips before she darted through the grass, stopping whenever she say a flower with blue in it's coloring to pick it gently at the base before continuing on her search. Once finding fourteen flowers that were mostly blue - reds and yellows at the tips of the petals- she returned to the bottle before sitting down, tapping a finger against her lip momentarily before she rested the flowers on her leg. Reaching her hand into the water, she grabbed handfuls of mud from it's bed, adding it to the clay bottle before alternating dry and wet Earth, filling the container up half-way before putting the flower inside, then adding wet soil to the bottle to top it off After fussing the flowers slightly, making them look more an arrangement than a boredom project, she placed the makeshift vase on top of the flat area of the rock, trying to allow the wet soil to dry so the flowers were set in place. Taking a puff of her almost extinguished cigarette, exhaled the smoke before removing it from her mouth; keeping the hand ready as she crossed the other arm over her torso, resting her elbow on the hand as she looked critically at her creation, before nodding and smiling. Then, after placing the cigarette between her lips, she fell backward to once again lie down on the ground with a sense of accomplishment, proud of the obviously homemade arrangement drying behind her.

xxxxxxThe man's shunpo had been quite fast, although dwarfed by most who specialized in speed. At best, his speed was that on a fresh fukotaichō's level. He stared wide-eyed at the large woman, large in terms of overall size. She was quite extraordinary really. Like his own, she had black hair that was one of her most distinguishing features. He found himself in a strangely beautiful valley with a large woman; one he'd never seen before. Although, Kajira very rarely ever tried to deeply appreciate nature, this was one of the rare times that he found himself pondering its many intricacies as to why he decided to stop here of all places and why she was there as well. Of course, his mind was trying to piece together some illogical conclusion that for some reason fate had designed for them to meet in this valley at this very moment in order to create a chain of events that would change everything forever.

xxxxxxRealizing he was staring off into space he spoke up with a warm smile, "Uh... Hey there. He raised one of his hands in a friendly welcoming gesture, with no ill intent whatsoever. He had hoped she would embrace him with an equally friendly gesture instead of the typical lack of interest that women tended to display towards him. Then again, his mind drifted to her immense body. This was a big woman. I mean, goddamn. She's ******** huge. Like god-damn. Kajira had heard tales of giants when he visited the World of the Living and was eavesdropping on humans telling stories to their children. Of course, those were stories. This one was real.

Kaede had begun to drift off into a light slumber as she waited for her little pride and joy to dry. That was when she was stirred into complete consciousness when she felt something moving at high speeds near her location, though she didn't open her eyes to take a look. For all she knew, whatever or whoever it was would pass by her without a second thought, leaving her to her lonesome, shrouded in the guise of the tall grass. When the feeling of an incoming person kept getting closer and closer, and eventually over the mountain, she casually tossed the almost depleted cigarette into the river, the small amount of golden tobacco and the dark blue wrapping paper dissolved as they lazily floated down the creek. She sighed and opened her eyes momentarily, before she closed them, hearing footsteps through the Earth beneath her head. Not only that, but whoever was coming had a vast amount of spiritual power, even though they were obviously suppressing it to a very low level; the complete instability of the wavelength would give that away to anyone who was trained by her Master: a ruthless man that killed her multiple times, just to bring her back for more deadly training. The psycho.

Opening her eyes and turning her head to the side, golden orbs locked onto the face of the man who had come to stand beside her, still looking around at the scenery; it wasn't like she could blame him, she had done the same thing upon arriving here, though she followed it by chugging a large bottle of sake and yelling about her life to the creek. Smiling lightly at her own idiocy, she shook her head as the other snapped back to reality, greeting her with a slightly awkward hello and a wave. placing her hands next to her head, she pushed up easily, assuming an inverted vertical position, before bending one leg to balance her on the ground as the other stayed completely vertical, slowly righting herself with a light smile on her face. Taking the time now to really look at the man, she noticed something that should have been obvious at first glance; the haori that he donned meant he was a Captain, though she couldn't peg his face with the Division he commanded. The next thing she noticed was his eyes, contrasting greatly with his black hair, their cold-nature making her smile wider. "Well hello, sir." She responded, approaching to stand directly in front of him, bending down to look straight into his eyes. Her golden orbs seemed to glow slightly, giving them a true golden appearance. His eyes were an icy blue, hardened by his past to give off the appearance of being as unmoving as permafrost. "Wicked eyes, man. I'm Kaede, Kaede Akamori, by the way." She added sweetly, righting herself to her full height.

Obviously not knowing the meaning of personal space, her hand reached down to flip out the edge of the Haori in order to look at the color, trying to jog her memory of who this man was. "I give up." She admitted finally, walking over to his side before leaning over his shoulder, simultaneously adjusting her hair so it wouldn't completely swamp his face. Seeing the number on his back, she exclaimed lightly before taking a few steps back, restoring the man's personal bubble. "Ohh, you're the Grand Monk! I'm so sorry, but your name escapes my mind." She added, bowing lightly before righting herself, placing her left hand on her hip and assuming a more natural stance. Her mind was now whirling with possibilities on how this meeting would go, but it suddenly snapped back to her flowers on the rock behind her; once there was a little lull in their conversation, she had to check to see if the soil was set so she could safely transport it back to her shack.

xxxxxxKajira smiled as he stated, "I guess I'm here for the same reason. There's only so far you can run before the nightmares that haunt your mind find you." His voice seemed to echo a coldness, like a heavy burden that weighed on his entire being. "You know, Jigokuhime is angry at me. I left her back at the Division... We had a really bad fight. I've been avoiding her lately. Because, I don't want to fall for her. But, it seems like the more I talk to her. The more I see her... Even now when I think about her. I'm falling even more deeply in love with her." He sighed, extending one hand out at the sky, and turning his head to her. "Do you think she could love me the way I love her? I mean, they say the zanpakuto is truly a reflection of your own soul. Maybe she was created to fill the emptiness that resides in my heart." Kajira laughed thinking that everything he was saying was complete nonsense. After all, he was the Grand Monk. He should already have these answers. But even then, he didn't. His relationship with Jigokuhime was becoming truly something more than any other shinigami and zanpakuto could imagine.

A slight downward twitch of her lip marked the frustrations she was now feeling, obviously having made the man a little upset that she hadn't remembered his name; she really needed to get work done then start drinking, not try and memorize things when the words are forming maelstroms on the page. Smiling cheekily and rubbing the back of her head when he spoke his name, his entire profile came surging back into her mind, her golden eyes opening to lock onto his momentarily before turning her head to the side, closing her eyes as the breeze hit her face, blowing her hair back lightly but effectively, peeling it from her face. Exhaling slowly, she relished the wind across her face before turning back to the man, letting out a content sigh before speaking. "I actually came here to run away from some problems, and after I lost them I decided to make something to spruce up my shack." She chimed, a light smile gracing her lips as her eyes met his, turning away to go check on her arrangement, a lithe finger pressing softly down on the soil, feeling it was barely even dry. Sighing, she rose from her crouched position by extending her legs fully then righting her back, completely forgetting that the man was still behind her. Oops.

Turning around without a rush, she noticed he seemed to be tired, but also heavily distracted by something whirling about in his mind, though his eyes and face conveyed nothing as to what it could have been about. She had heard stories that their division was odd, having deep spiritual ties with zanpakuto and general shinigami traditions; one of the divisions she respected most due to their extremely specific and important function. Walking over to him, she spun around and fell backward, landing propped up on her elbows beside him, looking up to his face momentarily before adverting her eyes to the mountain tops. "So what brings you here, if I may inquire? If it was to look for a nice place to take a quick snooze, I couldn't think of a better location, though I don't know for how much longer." She said, adverting her eyes to the sky to watch the rippling clouds move more quickly than they had previously, thickening rapidly and growing in size. As each minute went by, more and more light seemed to fade, though it was the middle of the day there, as the storm that was moving from their left was making its way toward the mountain. When it got here, she could always just steal the water from it and disperse it evenly over the plain and the base of the mountains, that way if the man did decide to go to sleep he wouldn't wake up to a deluge.

The icy chill that haunted his words lingered in her mind, causing her eyebrows to furrow slightly before evening out; it wasn't like he was wrong, not matter how far you run the darkness is always on your heels. Lowering her eyes slightly, they looked out of the corner of her eye, trying to read the man's face to no avail. His eyes were obviously iced over by pain and suffering from his past life, no doubt, but they had a chance to get so cold and apathetic because no one else seemed to care. Frowning slightly, she listened to him speak of his zanpakuto, immediately picking up on the longing in his voice. This caused her to turn her head and look at him, her eyes tracing his face carefully, looking for any signs of what he could be feeling beneath the surface of expression. Jigokuhime was his zanpakuto who was a shadow-type blade, and if he remembered correctly a very unique spirit at that. And for the Grand Monk to be having issues with his zanpakuto meant that there were underlying issues on both ends of their relationship, not only just him falling for his zanpakuto. It wasn't like she didn't understand, her spirit was the only person other than her Master that she met that was taller than her, and they were very much alike in most ways, but drastically different in some as well; and with her hot temper, when mixed with the icy satyr's flat demeanor, the attraction was small, at best.

But from the look in his eyes, his head now turned toward her own, he had already begun to fall for her; talking about her made his eyes less cold, which caused her to smile slightly. His laugh caused her to smile wider, though she averted her eyes in the other direction momentarily as her cheeks became slightly red, tucking her hair behind her ear before turning back to him. "Maybe, or maybe she was created to teach you how to love again. But it does make sense, with the backgrounds we have; you find it difficult to open up to other's, but because she's derived from your own soul it's different. I might not be the Grand Monk, but whenever you talk about her, you're eyes don't seem so cold. Even though I personally like your eyes; they remind me of Winter." She said, punching him lightly in the arm before adding the last sentence, smiling warmly. Even though there was plenty of darkness in his mind and soul, he still cared to an extent; if he didn't, he wouldn't be so plagued with nightmares of days past. Reaching beside her, she plucked a yellow and blue flower from its home, sitting up so she could lean forward and get closer to Kajira. She reached forward, slipping the flower near the tie in his hair, smiling stupidly as the light blue of the flower matched both his Haori and his eyes. Sometimes, it was the little things during the day that kept her going, always trying to avoid having flashbacks to when she slaughtered countless souls in the pursuit of preserving her freedom.

xxxxxxHe laughed a little then, thinking about what she said. "Maybe you're right. I guess in the end we all just have to find the silver lining in everything." Kajira felt happy then. A feeling that he hadn't felt in a really long time, perhaps not since he was a child. This gatekeeper, no this woman, was becoming his friend. Who would of thought someone could be so refreshing? Closing his eyes, he sort of curled up in a comfortable position and began to be overtaken finally by the inevitable sleep that he originally was feeling. Nothing could stop him from sleeping honestly. It just felt right to fall asleep against that soft grass without any fear or restraint.
