General Information
The portal opens up into an observation room, and down the stairs, an odd chamber for something like hunter training. At the center of a piranha-filled pool stands a solid stone table and several chairs. The Life Arena was built underneath the demolitions and ballistics testing areas, and the chamber rumbles with the occasional explosions above. Pinpoint red lasers sweep across the room regularly, as if hidden snipers are searching for a nice target. In the center of the table sits a wooden tower, made up of smaller wooden blocks. Yes. That's right. The Life Hunters prefer to train via Jenga.

Note: Distraction techniques and Yo Momma jokes are considered viable weapons when playing competitively.

If you fail: you have knocked down the tower! A small dart hits the back of your neck. You come to several hours later, and hope Dr. H didn't do anything to your body while you were unconscious. When you look into the mirror...

If you win: you have reached 50 points! You get a sharpie marker to do with as you please. peen points go to those with the highest scores.

    Mechanics
    - by carefully removing pieces of the tower, you earn points and advance to the next round. As the rounds continue, the odds grow steadily against you. Rolling a 1 at any point means you have knocked down the tower. Please do enjoy your mystery dart. Anything after reaching 50 points is purely for peen.

    - you may roll pieces individually (suggested for group play) or in batches of 5 (basically, a full round.)

  • Round 1

    Trainee Roll: 1d10

  • Round 3

    Pieces: 5
    Points per piece: 4

    Points per piece: 10
    Trainee Roll: 1d4
    Life Trainee Roll: 1d6

When word got back around to Taym that the training courses were up, he met it with a combination of relief and apprehension.

He'd been told repeatedly now to go and complete the Life course, which was particularly hellish for him. At least this time, he thought dimly as he trudged towards the underground bunker, he could participate without the hindrance of an audience.

Theatrics, he thought, remembering the sniper lasers and the sharpies and the Jenga tower itself. Not good enough to give them something practical to do. All about the melodrama, the ridiculous.

Well, he wouldn't give them the satisfaction. He'd just--

Or not. He became aware, as he drew up to the bored-looking techs manning the doors, that someone else was looking for a way to fill up an empty afternoon, and had settled on the Life training course.

For a second he considered turning away. Instead, he grimly bent to stub his cigarette out on the ground, field stripping the butt as an excuse to avoid meeting anyone's eyes.

Kat had heard of the tales and woes that were the Life course, but had yet had the chance to test it out herself. Having put it off for several weeks when she first decided to test it out, she lost her chance again with the power outage that followed. Luckily, minimum power had been restored to Deus, which allowed use of these facilities once again. What better time to finally test her mettle?

Having made her way down, she wasn't aware of anyone else in the room until she rounded the corner. Stepping inside, the Sun hunter tilted her head just slightly to get a good look at just what he was up to. Lifting a brow, she gave him a quick look over. Judging from his coat, he was an intermediate hunter and from the death division. She was sure she had seen him about here and there, but honestly - with all the hunters going in and out of Deus, it was hard to keep track anymore.

"You going in?" She finally asked, still watching from her side of the room.

"Unfortunately," he said, his voice deadpan and much thinner, much quieter than one might expect from his face, which suggested a voice full of gravel instead. He looked like he needed a really long nap and a stack of sandwiches.

Clearance granted, he headed for the doors and held them open for her, with an absent air that suggested this was more out of habit than chivalry. A return glance over her coat, and then up to her headgear with an inexorable lifting of his eyebrows. Taym frequently felt left out of the wear-strange-things-on-your-head trend on Deus.

"You done this before?" he asked, gazing into the room )with its sweeping lasers and its patrolling piranhas and its damned wooden tower) with quiet, funereal despair.

Judging from his enthusiasm, he had been through this once already. Wonderful. She could only guess the wonders this course had in store for them. She supposed she could ask him about it, but that might just spoil the surprise.

Finally getting able to get a look at the stranger, he received another quick look over before her attention was diverted again. Whoever this guy was, if they made it through this course okay, she had half a mind to drag him to the cafeteria for a bite to eat. Seeing slender figures on the island was normal, but this guy was looking a little on the sickly side.

Offering a smile as he held the door for her, she passed on ahead before stopping to take in the scenery. Whoa. So this is what it looked like.

At his question, she turned to him, smiling pleasantly. "Nope."

"In that case: pre-emptive congratulations on your inevitable victory," he said flatly. The door banged to behind them and he set off down the walkway with a cringing, slinking gait reminiscent of an oft-beaten tomcat. "Obadiah Thompson, by the way," he added, half-turning to extend a hand for her. Right on cue, it shivered in the wake of some kind of tremor.

No wonder he hated this course.

"Hmm~" Yup. They were so dead. Any attempt to hide her smile was thwarted as the corners of her mouth tugged up into a small grin. Still taking in the scenery, her arms found their way up behind her head she walked before they were dropped back down at her sides and her attention was returned to the Death hunter. Reaching out, she lightly took his hand in hers, shaking it once before releasing it again. Thanks to the demolitions and ballistics being right above this chamber, she assumed the quivering in his hands was the cause of whatever was going on above, and not Taym himself. "Katherine Taylor. Or Kat, if you feel like being casual."

Taym settled into the chair on the far side of the Jenga table in a way that suggested he might get up and run at any moment: tense as a coiled spring, on the very edge of his seat with his shoulders hunched forward. He gave the tower a glum look.

"I'll do the honors," he said, and he reached to pluck out a piece.

A catastrophic boom shook the room, and down the tower went.

Taym gazed at Kat over the rubble with a look of dispassionate resignation, and began re-assembling the pieces without commentary. His hands had started trembling again and this time, he suspected, it was nerves in a metaphorical rather than a literal sense. It was OK to ******** up in front of Peyton. It was less OK to ******** up in front of a total stranger.

"Nice, uh...." he motioned absently at his head, where goggles would be, if he had any. It sounded vaguely sarcastic, but maybe he was just pissed about his early failure.

Claiming her own seat on the opposite side of Taym, the woman gazed at the tower in front of her. So.. she had to be careful and not let this collapse, right? That was it, right? What happened if it fell..?

Nodding to Taym as he spoke, she watched with bated breath as he reached for the first piece. Wincing, she could only watch as the tower collapsed. Okay, so you had to be really ******** careful trying to remove this. Great. Patience was not one of her strong suits, and she was likely to screw this up for trying to rush things.

Helping in reconstructing the tower, she flashed him a quick smile. "Oh, thanks." Sarcasm or not, she loved her goggles. "They do come in handy though, you know. Especially in locations like the Sahara." Getting sand in her eyes once was bad enough, thank you very much.

With the tower rebuilt, it was time to got at it again. This time, she started in, hesitantly plucking each piece off one by one.

Pausing a moment, she cast a wary glance in his direction again. Normally, she didn't like to butt in to other people's business, but this guy really looked like he good do with a good meal. Should she invite him back to the cafeteria after for a bite? Something? Anything?

He stared at the tower, deliberating, looking exhausted.

"Well," he said, vaguely bitter, "it's more attractive than half a motorcycle helmet." He was aware that this would mean nothing to her, and apparently didn't care. "Or something you'd use to learn welding in shop class. You and Mark, man, maybe I should invest in a pair." He said this without realizing what a landmine of a subject he'd just stumbled onto. "Be part of the club."

He nipped in swiftly to nab a piece and place it on top, apparently wanting to get this over with, or else having decided that caution was pointless when you had his traitorous hands.

Motorcycle helmet - she hadn't seen anyone walking around wearing that at Deus. Though, Mark was fond of his pilot goggles. One of which she had swiped from him before. Trying to hold in her laughter, she reached for another piece. "Well, if you really want some goggles or something, Christmas is just around the corner, maybe I can get you a pair." Half joking, half serious, she sat back and waited for him to take his turn next.

"Seriously though. Goggles are a good investment."

He grinned, not looking at her, using the tower as an excuse to avert his eyes. His teeth were extraordinarily yellow but as long and even as a shark's.

"I think I lack the sartorial aptitude to accessorize them adequately," he said, gently extracting a piece and replacing it, exhaling when his hand remained steady until after he'd succeeded, at which point his fingers shook as he pulled them back to his lap. "But I appreciate the generous sentiment. You in the habit of frequently offering strangers Christmas gifts?"

Snickering quietly on her side, she peaked around the tower, questioning herself on which part would be the safest to remove. Any time now, she would be making this tower come crashing down on them both. It was only a matter of time.

"Well, you never know~" Finally deciding on which block was safe to remove, Kat pulled it from the tower, loosing a sigh of relief when the tower held. Sitting back as she allowed Taym to make his next move, she shook her head. "Being completely honest - this would actually be my first time offering to buy anyone gifts for Christmas." With the whole pod thing the first year she was here, and the exile her second year; she hadn't really had much of a chance to do the whole 'gifts' routine for Christmas yet.

"Portals being what they are," he observed, wincing as the tower swayed under his touch, "it might be next year before you get to do any Christmas shopping."

He gingerly placed the brick on top of the tower. "I'm pretty sure we'd all kill for a day off. An actual, real day off. With real food," he added, sounding distinctly wistful.
