Original Type/Change: Mau was originally a dream based on the maneki-neko . Even upon hatching from her tainted egg there was a lingering bit of her that wanted to see good happen for others, to do something to shift fate in their favor. What remained of that pure good will, swiftly died as the nightmare tainted her and transformed her into something darker and more sinister.
Mau is now damned sure that if something good is happening it's purely because she did it and wanted it to happen. You couldn't possibly have accomplished something on your own! You needed her supernatural assistance to keep your focus during a test, to push your body during a race, to land in such a way as to not break your neck when you fall from a tree. Good things only happen to people because Mau wills it ( as far as she is concerned) and she is thrilled when things work out as she's planned or determined they should.
Mau doesn't just take credit ( often falsely) for the good fortune that befalls people though, she relishes in other's failure and actively tries to waylay those she feels should not be allowed to succeed. She'll also turn other's pride on them, daring those she knows won't back down, to do things they physically can't or things they shouldn't attempt to etc, for various reasons. Her nightmare nature also allows her to bestow ill and misfortune upon those she is displeased with. Mau has no qualms about passing judgement and meting out the punishments she sees fit to people.
Personality: Optimist:
Mau tends to go into most situations with the mindset that things will work out. Not only is luck on her side but the world can't be bad all the time. Everything is possible and can be overcome with a bit of hard work or trickery. Even when things are bad she holds onto the idea that they likely won't get worse. She's not blindly optimistic though and won't unnecessarily run into danger armed only with the idea that surely she would be fine in the end.
Confident:
Mau is a strong independent nightmare cat who don’t need no home. She's a clever girl and will keep attacking a problem until she finds a solution for it. She sets her goals with the belief that she can accomplish them and then goes forth to tackle them without delay. Mau has a good idea of what she can and cannot do and she has no problem presenting herself to the world as capable and confident most of the time.
Confidence occasionally becomes outright hubris, this tends to be regarding her powers, her right to judge people or when she somehow beats ridiculously long odds when gambling.
Addicted:
Mau has gambling issues. She loves to test her luck, with lotteries and chance based games as well as in games of skill where betting is involved. Mau has gone hungry because she just had to bet her portion of the stolen food on something and then lost the wager. She keeps at it though because dammit she's lucky and she's supposed to win most of the time! As she ages people will notice this more and perhaps pity the girl who cannot resist just one more scratch card, hand of poker or one more turn at the roulette wheel.
Less likely to cause her actual hardship in the future, ( but feeding a bad habit) is when Mau will waste all her fake money in a videogame playing the mini games for a shot at some item she probably doesn't need but wants.
Manipulative:
Mau wants things the way she wants them and she's not above manipulating others to get what she wants. This girl has no qualms about abusing the weaknesses of others (especially their own pride) to direct them to do as she desires. That guy strutting around like a peacock showing off his abs, why yes she'll challenge him to lift beyond his limit then laugh and refuse to help when he hurts himself. Sometimes Mau will try to manipulate others for what she feels is their own good by tricking them into overcoming a fear or belief that they could not do a certain thing.
Self centered:
Mau cares about herself first and foremost, she will always consider how something will effect her before agreeing to do it. The best way to get on her good side is to be generous with her and careful about how you ask for favors.
Adaptable:
Sometimes life just sucks and fate blows raspberries in Mau's face. Sometimes it's less drastic but there are difficulties to overcome. In these times moments the nightmare manifest will do her best to succeed by whatever means necessary. She can eat bugs and drink from puddles when lost or stranded in a forest for days. If tasked to make desserts for some event she would rope a fellow manifest who can taste sweetness ( cats and thereby Mau herself cannot) in to make sure things came out alright. When obstacles are put in her path Mau immediately tries to find a way around them or to lessen their impact on her situation.
