The couches and chairs in the common rooms were really soft. Something Peyton had already known, having sat in one of the chairs while Bix recounted tales of horror from days gone by. Not to mention the time Solomon had raided all the cushions from the common room at the end of the hall nearest his room so they had building materials for a blanket fort. Overstuffed, worn out, squashy chairs and couches. Peyton had very recently rediscovered just how soft they could be, as she had managed to doze off curled up in one of the large chairs tucked up against the corner of the room.

What was she doing there? Avoiding her own room, or, more likely, the room that was across the hall and two doors down.

Likely this was not a tactic that could be maintained indefinitely, but it had proven successful for that last couple of days, and the dainty hunter had found little reason to deviate from it. She'd tucked herself into one of the chairs and had been looking over twitter before comfort and warmth had ganged up on her and sucked her into a light sleep.

Now she lay half curled in the chair, one small arm dangling, with her phone laying on the floor beneath flaccid fingers. Jean clad legs and bare feet had extended up and over the arm

Taym, by contrast, avoided the common rooms as much as he possibly could, holing himself up in his room in his free time, or in forgotten corners of the library when he could get away with it, or in the shadiest parts of the cafeteria when the comings-and-goings of people would be more of a comfort than a trial. But there were vending machines in the common rooms, and he was feeling the sort of trembling-edged bone-weary that suggested an immediate sugar influx might be a wise course of action, and so he'd steeled himself up to down a soda, not feeling particularly enthused at the prospect.

He was arrested in this plan by the realization that the room wasn't empty, and he paused and withdrew his Deus-issued debit card from where he'd been teetering on the brink of swiping it.

The Island's silence was heavy with the power out, unbroken even by the ambient hum of indoor lighting and air conditioning. So he paused before he crossed the room with a stealthy quiet that would, he thought, have made his division proud, and he sank down on the floor next to her. He sat on the floor regularly, which she knew. If she abruptly woke up there'd be nothing unusual about this at all. Taym had a strange aversion to chairs, and to comfortable, soft ones most of all.

Arranging himself into a nonchalant pose and, for good measure, pulling a paperback book out of one of the oversized pockets of his coat and resting it open on his knee, place held with a finger--and there, now he looked like he was just reading and waiting patiently for Peyton to wake up, which was a little creepy but not entirely suspect--he gingerly reached out and, without moving the phone from where it rested on the floor, swiped his finger across it to indulge in some snooping, casting leery glances up to her every couple of seconds.

Taym needn't of bothered going to such lengths to be sneaky, the girl was out for the count. She didn't so much as twitch when he sat on the floor beside her chair. She barely so much as sighed until he'd managed to get through her texts and twitter account, then, without waking, proceeded to roll onto her side, tucking one leg up while the other stretched all the straighter.

It was probably the tea that had done her in. She wasn't usually one for tea, but craving a warm beverage, and having previous experience with Deus' coffee, she'd gone with tea under the assumption that it would be safer.

She was wrong, not that she was aware of that yet. Or of anything else for that matter. Not even when her fingers brushed against the back on Taym's hand where it hovered over the screen of her phone.

Which was about the moment he decided he'd taken the risks far enough, and Fiona's sullen irritation at his lack of honorable behavior caught up and turned into actual guilt. If there'd been anything significant perhaps he wouldn't have felt so bad, but there hadn't been.

So he got up, and he quietly procured a can of soda (absently wondering why vending machines counted as emergency power but hot water heaters didn't and deciding it was because Deus was cruelly capitalistic), and for a while he considered just leaving her there. They hadn't last parted on the best of terms, and probably she had no desire to see him. This was an urge with which he could empathize.

But it stuck in his craw to feel like he had to scurry away for the sake of her feelings, and it made him contrary.

He perched on the arm of the chair next to her outstretched legs and, coiled to avoid an instinctive kick if it came, he pinched gently at her ankle to wake her up.

The pinch didn't immediately wake her, but it did make her stir. She rolled again, pulling her foot away from his finger only to drape her ankle over one of his knee as she stretched in her dozing, dainty toes pointing before she relaxed again and settled into the plush cushions she was laying on.

Seconds later she finally opened her eyes, and a quiet, questioning sound was issued as she noticed him sitting on the arm of the chair. "Taym?" A sudden yawn cut off further question, and she rubbing the heel of her hand against one of her eyes before pushing up on her elbows and scooting back into the corner of the chair she'd been napping on.

He hadn't opened the can yet, which gave him a convenient thing to do with his hands: awkwardly playing at the tab on the top. He could, when he wanted to, manifest the strangest, most innocent-seeming schoolboy gestures, wildly at odds with his appearance.

Probably nothing in the world would ever mend Taym's shaving habits, but the new clothes, at least, made him look better than walking filth.

"Peyton," he responded, glancing at her sideways. "Been waiting here for hours like a dog at a damned gravesite, I will have you know. You sleep like the dead."

She blinked at him groggily, then pale eyes widened. "What, really?" How long had she been out? Had it seriously been hours? She looked quite startled, then a frown slid along her lips. "You've been waiting for me to wake up?"

So many questions, not enough answers.

Drawing her legs back she pulled her knees close, thin arms wrapping around them.

He interpreted this as playing along and felt a wave of relief. Maybe she wasn't as pissed as he'd thought. "Seriously," he returned solemnly, shoulders loosening when she withdrew. "I was about to send for emergency rations."

And suddenly the dainty hunter looked boarder line panicked. "s**t, I'm sorry! You could have woken me, I wouldn't have been mad." She rolled forward to sit on her knees, hands coming to rest on the arm rest to either side of him. "Was I really that out of it?" Maybe there was something wrong with her. Maybe she had that sleeping beauty syndrome. "Maybe I should go to the infirmary.."

"Haha," he deadpanned, still unaware that she was doing anything but theatrically joking. Which seemed out of character, but maybe she was over-eager to smooth over the disaster he'd created. He cracked the tab on the soda but didn't drink it, instead eyeing it like it might bite him. "From what I understand, the infirmary's more likely to have you walking out worse than you went in than offer any kind of help. Why are you sleeping in the common room?"

She was staring up at him with very sincere worry written all over her face, and when he questioned the over all helpfulness of the infirmary she shrank back and made a grab for her left shoulder as a strangled, helpless little noise crawled it's way up her throat. She'd been to see the doctors twice, and now she was having serious concerns towards the work they'd done on her.

She blinked when he asked why she was sleeping in the common room, and she frowned. "It wasn't my intention, it just happened."

He narrowed his eyes at her, concern creeping in.

"You OK?" he asked, taking a swig of his drink and looking distinctly displeased by the results. "You seem, uh." He waved a hand vaguely. "Nervous. It's not--not me, is it?"

Was she okay? She wasn't sure. The thought flickered across her face, gaze sliding from him tot he room at large as she thought about it. "I don't know." Pale lavender returned to him, watched his hand, then slid up to his face. "Shouldn't I be nervous? I mean if I've been sleeping for hours out here, and the infirmary isn't any help.. "

Wait, him? Peyton frowned. "What's not you?"
