█ ▌Social hierarchies

Like in medieval Europe, the societal structure within the walls adhere to a rigid hierarchy with a spatial separation that makes it unlikely for nobles and civilians to ever cross each other's paths.

2 ▌Social Classes
    Nobles

    Middle class civilians

█ ▌Nobles

Nobles live in the innermost wall Sina, an area referred to as the interior. Not all citizens within Sina are nobles, however, as it also houses the military police and the extremely wealthy businessmen.

Nobility itself is a title passed on to blood children or through marriage. The great wealth equated to nobility comes from taxes, connections to merchants, government enterprises, extensive properties, and inheritances.

A successful merchant may become incredibly rich, but they would not be classified as a noble unless they marry in to the family. Likewise, a noble could lose all of their fortune, but due to their title as a noble, they still have a chance of marrying a wealthy merchant who wants nobility, or perhaps marry another noble who desires the reputation of their name.

The majority who live in this district are either blissfully or willfully ignorant of the lives outside of their own walls. The fear of titans is a distant memory to they who are behind three walls, and starvation is but a story they sometimes hear.

Children receive the best education with private tutors, boarding schools, and academies. They are taught at an early age to take pride in their last name as a noble, and that it is their birthright to lead others. Most children are groomed to take over their parent's positions and fiercely protect their lifestyle. When not inheriting a position as head of an estate or entering the government, most of them grow up to be courtesans [political lobbyists of varying influence].

Noble characters should be kept to a minimum. You may quest for a noble character, but if they become too common a creation, further nobles will be restricted.

█ ▌Military

The military is not a social class, strictly speaking; its members can hail from the middle or lower classes and, more rarely, from nobility. Each military division is perceived in different ways by citizens.

The Stationary Guard, also known as the Garrison, police near the walls, maintain them, and man them in the case of a titan attack. While some may view them as protectors and be grateful to them for their service, during times of peace when they have grown lax and civilians feel safe, many view them as useless tax eaters.

Military Police, comprised of the top graduates, serve a role as police inside of Wall Sina. Their status is a prestigious one, so they are regarded with envy and admiration. The nobility know them as the King's Guard and either respect them or expect to be pandered to and served by them. Due to rampant corruption and abuses of authority, added on to their role as tax collectors and land distributors, civilians often resent the Military Police.

The Survey Corps are mostly viewed as a waste of tax dollars - going out into titan territory is simply suicide, and nothing has ever been gained from these ventures. With resources already stretched thin, why should the survey corp be supported for such useless actions? There is just enough influence and curiosity about outside resources to at least keep the branch from shutting down, and it's a good place for those desperate with nothing left to be sent to. Once in a while you may get an actual idealist.

Post titan-attack, they are regarded as humanity's hope. Children especially look up to them as heroes and adventurers, with many recruits wanting to set out and reclaim the lands of humanity, seek revenge, or find answers.

█ ▌Middle class civilians

The middle class is comprised of citizens who have obtained wealth through trading or other business enterprises. In some cases this wealth can rival that of some noble houses, granting them a position on the negotiating table with the nobility.

Middle class citizens can afford luxuries and a higher education for their children (which, for the upper middle-class, can rival that of nobles) while at the same time maintaining a comfortable quality of life.

The adults of the middle class have toiled hard to obtain their wealth. Most will try to raise their children to take up the family business and not let that go to waste.

█ ▌Lower class civilians

Schooling is mandatory up until age 11 for all civilians, so many of the lower class civilians lack education beyond that. Their wealth ranges from extreme poverty to relative comfort and small luxuries. Jobs are extremely varied; everything that supports society, from farmers to carpenters, merchants to doctors. Without at least a middle class clientele, pure artists such as musicians and painters would live in poverty unless supplemented by other jobs.

█ ▌Wallists

Wallists (also known as the Wall Cult) are an influential and still-growing religion that believes the walls to be holy; none should deface the walls or leave their territory. Interfering with the walls is a sin, though many of its members believe the walls ought to be sealed. They have churches in every town and city.

Their higher ranks are privy to classified information, closely guarded enough for assassinations to be in order should there be a threat of leakage. Only NPCs can be in this category.

The lower ranks, however, are simply devout servants of the Walls. They preach to the citizens, gather converts, maintain religious order, and serve their Church. You can make wallist characters in this category.

█ ▌Government

The Walls are ruled by a traditional monarchy. At the head of it all is a king or queen, followed by various ranks of aristocracy which are closely tied to governmental roles. With a higher title, bigger responsibilities tend to be bestowed upon one in the governing of territories and overseeing of political, legal, economical, and military affairs.

Princess/Prince - The possible successors of the kingdom. Despite a high rank, most of their political influence and activity is thanks to pandering from the rest of the aristocracy, which seeks to earn their favor. They can be granted districts within the interior to govern.

Archduke/Archduchess - A non-hereditary title, bestowed by a king or queen to a duke/duchess. Its high rank is equal to that of a prince or princess in the succession of a kingdom. An archduke or archduchess typically governs a sizable territory of multiple districts within the interior.

Grand Duke/Grand Duchess - A hereditary title. A grand duke or grand duchess typically governs a district within the interior.

Duke/Duchess - A hereditary title. A duke or duchess typically governs a district within Wall Rose but not within the interior.

Marquis/Marquise - A hereditary title. A marquis usually governs a district within Wall Maria but not within Wall Rose.

Count/Countess and Earls - This title of nobility is bestowed upon an aristocrat as a symbol of their great service to the state. Many of them are advisers within the court and can be given authority over military and other state affairs. Some counts and earls that already had another hereditary title (ex.: duke/duchess) do govern a hereditary territory.

Viscount/Viscountess - A lesser count, also not tied to the governance of a territory, though if they already had one, there we go.

Baron/Baroness - A hereditary title. A baron/baroness usually governs a territory within a district, containing multiple towns and villages.

Lord/Lady - A hereditary title. A lord/lady usually governs one or more large estates or lands. When a noble does not inherit their parent's title, perhaps due to having an elder sibling, they are like to become a Lord or Lady.

Non-Aristocratic Governance

The Military Police collects taxes and manages land distribution of those not within nobility. Other than that, there are other jobs associated with government, including the Chiefs or Mayors of towns and cities.
