Alex wiggled her toes in the grasses of the open field. She was closer to a stream than she was to outskirts of the Dreamery. She found herself every day a little further than previous.
She didn't know exactly what drove her to push boundaries and limitations. She knew that her family had rules set up for a reason. But, she had always been one to fend for herself.
It was only recent that she had come to be apart of the family. She did not yet feel as if she was completely apart of it yet. Everyone within the last couple of weeks had had their own thing. She had even gone as far as helping in subduing that escaped nightmare. She didn't come back normal but she never got as infected as Auden. She didn't talk about that incident.
She kicked a small rock. It didn't hurt her toes. Never wearing shoes she was use to it. As she wondered around she was hoping to find something that would interest her.

Kites were supposed to be easy to fly, you just chucked them into the air and ran a bit and then the soared through the skies like they were born to be there. Berit was struggling to get her home made kite to so much as leave the ground. It was frustrating for the dragon girl as every other project in her do-it-yourself book thus far had turned out just fine. This thing though was just garbage, it felt light enough to float but no no matter ho hard she three it into the sky it simply nosedived back to the ground without even trying to glide.
Perhaps if she launched it out of a tree and then jumped and ran Berit could keep the damned thing aloft for more than a few mere seconds. There should be trees down beyond the stream she mused and struck off across the field. In the distance she could make out a semi familiar figure, someone she had seen around before but not spoken to.
Abby? Ally? Something like that, whoever they were Berit was marching towards them. Perhaps they knew what had gone wrong with her kite and if nothing else she wanted to be sure of their identity and know what they were doing out in the field.

Alex immediately stopped her search for what ever it was that she didn't know she was looking for when she saw a figure approaching her. Wings. Could it be Alison. 'Great,' she thought. Not what she wanted. Mater of fact last thing she wanted was to be dragged back to the house. When they got a bit closer she realized that it was not her sister.
"May I help you?" She asked only because it seemed that this person was heading towards her with purpose.

Berit grinned and held up her kite "Do you know why this thing won't fly? I followed all of the instructions and I can fly better than it can." Berit's full wingspread was impressive but she could do little more than slow any falls she took at this point, proper flight was ages off yet for her. " You're Abby right?" She was pretty sure that was the other girl's name, she looked like an Abby, or maybe a tabby.

"Alex," she corrected. She wondered how this girl knew of her and she didn't know of her. Perhaps they had seen one another in passing and the other had over heard her name. After all they had been living in the complex for the past couple of weeks now. It was only a mater of days until they would be returning home. They were just making sure that Auden was going to stay healthy and in tip top shape.
"I've never flown a kite." She said as she took the kite from the other girl. "What's your name?" She asked as inspected the kite. It was the correct shape. These things she knew from books and pictures. She ran her hand along the string. Plenty of it. She tossed it up and watched it flutter to the ground. This told her the kite was light enough.
"I've seen children in the park toss it up and run. I'll climb that tree right there with this kite. When I let go you run." The plan sounded simple enough. Before getting a confirmation she headed for and up the tree.

Well at least she'd been close about the name thing, Berit thought. "I'm Berit or maybe Beri because that's also sort of neat." The draconic girl knew dragons were supposed to be attached to their names and many had special secret names but Berit had never felt anything special about her own name. Berit wasn't about to stop alex from her quest and merely watched as the other girl climbed up high. She too liked climbing although her wings sometimes made it very difficult to do without getting them snagged on something. "Ready when you are," she called out, offering a wide grin.

Alex's tail end twitched. "Alright then Beri it is."
She carefully made her way to the end of the branch. She knelt to a crouching position. Her ears swiveled. "I'm ready," She grinned.
Past that little bit of warning there was no more. She sent the kite gliding straight ahead. She held her breath and hoped it worked.
"Don't forget to run," she hollered out.

Berit took off like a shot, being careful to continue letting out string behind her so the kite didn't get dragged to the ground. By some miracle this launch from way up high was enough to keep the kite aloft for more than it's normal three to four seconds. When Berit finally turned to watched she was greeted to the sight of the colourful toy dancing in the air. Yes, success !

"Go Beri! Go!" Alex cheered. In her cheering and excitement she jumped up. She had completely forgotten about her being perched in a tree. As her feet touched the branch she slipped. Her arms flailed as she tried to 'fly' to catch herself. It didn't work. Down she went. She hit a couple of branches before trying to grab a branch. Her claws scrapped the various branches. She was having the worst luck. Thankfully though that branches in between altered her fail enough to the point that when she landed she wasn't hurt physically. Just her pride was hurt a little. Her ears flatted as she stood. Landing on ones butt hurt! She hoped that her friend hadn't noticed any of this. She didn't want her friend to stop doing what she was doing because that would mean the kite would stop floating. "You're doing an awesome job," she said hoping it would distract the other from noticing. ((Evens she rights herself. Odds she fails.))

Berit had heard the other girl land but remained focused on keeping the unruly kite under control. When Alex called out to here she nodded without taking her eyes off the sky. See, the other girl was just fine! This kite though, now it was in the sky but it kept swerving and dipping, doing it;s own things instead of what she wanted. Berit fiddled with the string, trying to tug on it to correct the flight path without pulling it down but the results were mixed. Kites it seemed were far more complex than they appeared. "Um you can come try and hold the string if you want." The dragon girl offered, both in consideration of the girl who had helped her and because she might be able to observe Alex having more luck.

"I don't know much of anything about kites," Alex grinned. She stretched the length of herself and worked out the kinks from the fall. "You have your fun. I'm just glad that I could be of assistance."
She watched as the kite bobbed about in the sky. She wished she could chase it and play with it as if it were a toy mouse. However she couldn't because it was up there and she was down here.

Berit sighed and glared balefully at the unruly kite "I don't think it's would matter if you knew, it's not behaving anyways." It was still fun and Berit was pleased to have been able to get the damned thing in the air with the other manifests help but her interest was fading fast. Since paying constant attention to the kite seemed to have little effect on it;s status she glanced over to the feline girl. "Why were you out here?" Berit had needed to open space and the unobstructed wind to fly her kite, Alex just seemed to be out in the field for no reason, never having been one for stillness or quiet contemplation Berit couldn't fathom what the other girl was doing out here alone.

"I'm sure about that kite. It was fun getting it up but keeping it up that's another matter." Alex winked. She took a couple of steps back and using her hand to shield her eyes she watched the kite bob. She still couldn't understand what was the big to do about it.
"Me?" She hooked her thumbs in her suspenders and rocked back and forth on her heels. "I like to be free. I like to roam and explore. It is always about what is over the horizon. Nothing better than climbing a tree or searching for the next shiny." She winked.

Alex it seemed, was all the sorts of things Berit was looking for in a friend. or at the very least what she was looking for in someone to pass the time with. " We should go do that then. I don't think this kite stuff is for me." Maybe later she'd try and master the art of flying a kite but at this point just about anything else was more appealing. As she spoke Berit stretched her wings out wide and lashed her tail against the ground impatiently.

Alex walked clock wise around Berit. Her wings were different from her sisters, Alison's. These she was sure were leathery. She wanted to touch but resisted. Then there was her tail. It, from what she gathered from visualization, was like the wings. Leathery. She herself had a tail but it was nothing like hers. Nothing of herself was like this other teen. Alex was soft and Berit was, well she wasn't sure because she hadn't touched her. Why hadn't she paid this much attention previous? Oh, that's right, the kite. She grinned when her new friend tossed the kite notion aside and was all for the next shiny. "Come on then!" She grabbed Berit's hand and tugged her along. "There is a stream this away."
