The dining hall is a long hall lit by dozens of chandeliers and a fireplace. The fireplace and the candles in the chandeliers keep the hall comfortably warm. At the head of the hall is one long table, designated the staff table. Populating the body of the hall are several long, though smaller tables, set with benches for the students.

The dining hall sees a lot of traffic over the course of the year, and the kitchen staff works tirelessly to prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. The tables and benches are worn smooth from use, and a few rickety chairs sit in the corner for lonely diners. The doors to the kitchen constantly swing back and forth as food is brought in. Empty plates are collected from a tray near the kitchen doors, though they never pile up too high. There is a dent in the wall above the kitchen door and a few splinters missing from a bench from previous fights between students.

Windows on either side of the hall look out onto the bell tower and lake. Heavy burgundy curtains can be drawn across them in the evenings when the sun begins to hit the lake at an unfavorable angle. In the wintertime, snow collects in the woodworking on the windowsills.

There is an intercom button next to the entrance doors and another one on the wall behind the staff table.

Vincent made his way through the halls, following the boy with the map while he spoke a little about his him. "Tuscany is a very fertile land. My estate is located in a lush cradle, surrounded by acres and acres of vineyards, where we grow grapes to make wine. It is a very colorful place, green in the spring and summer and painted with warm colors in the autumn. The weather is warm and temperate for much of the year.. The Mediterranean winds blow across the hills to make sure of that. We love food in Italy.. it is a country famous for its rich food culture and abundant produce.. Let's see.. We also have a rich historical culture, and in many places you can find masterpieces of sculpture, art, and architecture.." He trailed off a bit as they approached the Dining Hall, walking in and taking a look around quietly. He was quite proud of his homeland, really, but he didn't want to go on about it forever. He had more important things to think about, such as what delicacies to fill his belly with.

"Tuscany sounds like a handsome place to live," Kenton said, holding open the door of the hall. Inside the hall was warm, and smelled of countless varieties of food. "Shall we?"

The staff tables served to hold the spread of food for the day's meals. This morning, all manner of fruits, pastries, meats, and juices lined the wooden tables, with clean plates and silverware on either end. Kenton broke off to introduce himself to the kitchen staff before making himself a plate. There was certainly never this much variety in the barracks. Perhaps coming to this school would spoil him.

Kenton collected a few pastries, a pear, and a glass of water before sitting down at one of the long, empty tables. He poured a bit of salt from the shaker on the table over his pear and into his glass of water before taking a sip.

"Do all royals eat this way every day?" he wondered aloud to the Duke.

Vincent shrugged as he made up a plate full of two croissants, some cold cuts of ham with an apricot glaze, a small bunch of grapes, and a glass of milk. "I honestly don't know what Royals eat, but it's probably even more extravagant than this." His lips twitch a bit, sliding to sit at one of the long benches and begin his meal. "Why? Don't they have spreads like this where you come from?"

Kenton tried not to imagine the extravagance of royalty, and instead took a bite of his salted pear. At least the fruit was familiar territory.

"I could not say what my people eat in times of plenty. I am a military officer," he explained. "I grew up in the military barracks of my land, and our meals are never this..." He struggled to find the right word. "This large."

He took another sip of salted water before trying the fruit-looking pastry he had picked out. It was almost oppressively sweet, more sugar than fruit. Trying not to pull a face, he placed it back on his plate. "I am sure my King and his family eat very well, but I have never seen for myself."

The Duke's brow raised incredulously as he chewed and swallowed, eyeing the boy up and down quickly. "... You're a military officer? How is that possible? How old are you?" Judging by the fact that they were in the same year in school, he couldn't be that much older to hold a man's position in a militia.. Could he?

Kenton laughed. "I am fourteen years old a lieutenant commander. My people have been at war with the dragons of China for eight years, beginning more or less with a typhoon in the Pacific and our Queen's death. My aunt stepped in and married the King at that time, and I went into the force at the age of six when my father went with her to Crescent Tide and was asked to oversee the troops. I earned my rank and my scars in the last three years, when my father was taken as a prisoner of war. I filled his role and commanded the militia until the conclusion of the war."

He looked down at his plate, trying to choose another thing to eat. "Our military is decimated, but still a cognizant force. The war is over, at least for now, and I hope to the gods it does not start up again while I am away."

He popped a piece of bread into his mouth. It was also sweet, but less obnoxiously so. "But enough talk of death and war. It is hardly a fitting conversation to have at breakfast."

The bell tower outside on the grounds chimed noon. "Er, brunch, then," he corrected, polishing off his salted pear.

Vincent had a hard time concealing his admiration, which was unusual for him. He couldn't believe that this guy had joined the military at six years old, and that he held such a high rank within it at fourteen. When Kenton started to brush the subject aside, however, he followed suit without complaint. He didn't much like talking about war and things either, particularly after he had suffered his own losses at the hands of violence. Polishing off the rest of his food, he pushed the plate away with a quiet nod, looking out the window to try and spot the bell tower which chimed in the distance. "It seems like it's already that time.. Where were you going after this? Fancy a walk by the lake, or a game of chess?" he asked, suddenly feeling a bit more social. He was just glad to have found someone he could talk to who didn't necessarily make him feel ostracized. 'Plus, if I have a friend who looks this dangerous, maybe the upperclassmen will leave me alone,' he thought, conscious of Jasper's warning that there would likely be at least one bully amidst the group of high ranking adolescent society.

Kenton swallowed the last of his brioche bread. "Oh, I have nothing to do until a bit before dinner. Do you know, a walk by the lake sounds lovely," he said. "I was in such a rush to get to the dorms I didn't stop to take in the grounds." He drank down his salted water. It was refreshing, and reminded him of home.

He picked up his and the Duke's dishes, taking them to a tray by the door to the kitchens where the staff took care of it. What a strange world royals lived in, to have everything done for them. "Shall we?" he asked, leading the way to the door. "I should like to see how the grounds have recovered from what happened."

Haidee sashayed into the dining hall, still fuming from her confrontation with the book-stealing prince. What a terrible day this was becoming! And it had started so pleasantly, too.

She looked over the offerings laid out on the staff table. Non-class days meant the food was informally served, and presumably informally eaten. Haidee picked up a plate and placed a few pieces of fruit on it. Truly, she didn't eat much. Why would she need to? She was small and slim and didn't expend a lot of energy. Haidee wondered if that would change with the coming year.

The tables were empty, so she chose to sit in a spot in the center of the room. All the better to attract the attention of anyone more receptive to having a civil conversation, she thought.

The princess sat and ate, awaiting a change in the room.

Levy strode into the Dining Hall, her scarlet eyes quickly darting about the room to find a familiar face. No one she knew. She sighed, not breaking stride as she reached out to grab an apple from a nearby table and made her way towards the bench closest to the fire. The princess preferred the warmth- more like worshipped it.

The teenager sat down without a sound and stretched out her legs, welcoming the fire's warm breeze. Levy bit down into her apple, enjoying the sweet juice that filled her mouth as she gazed into the flames. Though her attention was directed towards the fireplace, Levy was highly aware of the other people in the room. Unfamiliar scents. She listened as the two - the males - left, and soon it was just her and another female. Should she get up and say hello? It wasn't within Levy's nature to make the first move when it came to communicating with strangers.

After some time, Vincent started making his way back into the Dining Hall. He was through worrying about the newest information he'd received on the school for now, determining that he would spend some time in the library if he wanted to find out more. Instead, he was beginning to feel rather hungry again, and had decided to follow the groups of students which had begun to file back inside for supper.

Once inside, he only saw a couple of people that he had noticed before, but there was one face in particular that just about made him swoon on his feet. His mouth dropped open slightly, and he could feel the traces of a blush filling his cheeks at the sight of a rather beautiful older girl, sitting alone near the fire. Closing his mouth, he drew his features together, swallowing tensely. Should he? Well, he wouldn't get an opportunity like this every day... That was it. He was going to talk to her. Steeling his nerves, he relaxed his face and walked toward the girl, stand a couple of paces away as he introduced himself with a bow. "Buona sera, bella donna... My name is Vincent Milano, the Duke of Tuscany. Might I ask for yours?"

It wasn't long before Levy could sense one of the males re-enter the Dining Hall, though it did not result in her shifting from her position from the fire. She was content, and had she been able to purr, she would be doing so right now. However, solitude did not last long. It seemed as if she didn't have to make up her mind about approaching the other woman, for the male had decided to approach Levy herself.

Before Vincent had even made his appearance, the blonde haired princess was already tracking him. Her keen senses alerted her to his smell; a heavy scent of wine, and... candy? An interesting mixture that combined both childhood and adulthood delights. She could also smell his fear, but she had to give him some credit for approaching her despite his jitters. She took a bite from her apple as she watched him approach from the corners of her eyes.

Levy's scarlet eyes glittered as they flickered over to Vincent's bowing figure. She readjusted herself, settling her right foot atop the bench so her knee was close enough to her elbow that she could rest it there while she cradled her own face in her hand. One corner of Levy's lips rose in a poor attempt of a half smile as she listened to him speak. "Italian. A lovely language," She thought to herself. That explained the wine smell. The teenager's eyes trailed over Vincent's body from head to toe with little care to whether or not Vincent noticed. "He's so young. Too young." She noted, but she decided to have a little fun with him anyway. Though her face remained unreadable, her voice had a warm and welcoming tone. "Levy Damiana. Princess of Fiore."

A smile like the dawn broke over Vincent's face when the girl introduced himself, glad that she had been receptive to his approach. "Piacere di conoscerla, mia donna" he said with a tip of his cap before he removed it and sat down opposite her, running his fingers through medium dusty blonde hair to smooth it. "Fiore.. The name has a beautiful sound, but I am afraid I have never heard of such a land. Would you tell me a little bit about it?" As long as she kept talking to him, Vincent would listen in rapture. He didn't want to make any wrong impressions, not with a girl this lovely. There was something incredibly fascinating about her, though he couldn't place exactly what it was.. not yet, anyway.

She couldn't help it. Even though the situation was not romantic in the slightest, Levy found herself wanting to open up to this child. His italian accent was like music to her ears and his gentlemanly demeanor was a nice break from the usual cat-call she was used to. The princess was weak to romance, and she knew it. It took much effort for her to remember that this young boy opposite her was probably three or four years younger than herself; much too young to her liking. Levy nodded in agreement; yes, it did seem nice to meet him, too.

"Well, with such a beautiful kingdom comes a beautiful name," Levy began, her eyes twinkling despite the lack of a smile. "Fiore is endless. Fields, flowers, forests, towns, cities. It goes on and on, even through the oceans that border it on three sides." Levy paused. Though she took great pride in her country, she never felt that she could do it justice when she spoke. "In our kingdom, there are people who make a living by making good use of magic. People call them mages. Mages belong to various guilds where they do jobs on demand for the service of others. We depend on each other to survive." The princess paused again, this time to see what the youngling had to say. She sat up straighter, crossing her right leg over her left and held her half eaten apple in her left hand.
