There were many things Taym would never understand about Peyton and by extension the Sun division as a whole, and a big one was this: how the hell was hitting a training dummy supposed to be 1. valuable or 2. a good way to vent steam?

It was early. The training fields were comparatively empty. Taym was standing self-consciously across from a training dummy and staring at it with resentment plastered all over his face. He'd tried to make himself stab the thing, but he couldn't. It felt like kicking a car and claiming it made you a jiujitsu master. It felt like picking a fight with a toaster.

So he was now in the stupid, stupid position of just glaring at it like he could will it into attacking him. As it was he didn't look much more threatening than it did--painfully scrawny, the emaciated body evident in the ropey lines of his neck and the deep hollow of his collarbone above the sagging neckline of his too-big shirt and the long, swollen-jointed fingers of his hands, although the coat hid the worst of it. The knife in his hand wasn't particularly impressive either, especially as Hunter weapons went. It looked more like a tool than a weapon: dark and discreet and unassumingly small. Between the two of them there was a definite air of prowling, underfed stray.

Absently, lost in irritated thought, he dug the tip of the blade into the training dummy's chest. It wasn't even an attack. He looked like he was trying to piss it off, although in truth he hadn't even realized he'd done it, not really.

Finn was yawning into a white gloved hand when he strode out of the dorms that morning, having been up for at least an hour, probably closer to two prior to that. He was tired, but when wasn't he to some extent? He hadn't had a full nights sleep since waking up in his pod, and last night had been particularly unkind to him, waking up at least once every hour, and when trying to sleep again, finding his mind running at a mile a minute, focusing too much on things that he would likely never discuss with anybody out loud.

Getting eaten by an insanity titan and consequentially poisoned by blue venom that had stained his skin for several days certainly hadn't helped very much.

Still, as he wandered out into the early morning light, he somehow managed to appear refreshed, his clothes clean and immaculate, his hair perfectly styled, a spring in his step to hide just how very bone weary he was becoming. The only thing that really gave hint to his ongoing fatigue was the faintly dark circles underneath his eyes, and a headache that had him wincing slightly at any loud noises.

Normally, at this hour of day, Finn would have gone out on a patrol along the beach. However, with the threat of the insanity titan's, that no longer seemed to be a viable option. So, he headed towards the training area instead, figuring he could at least get a bit of a work out with his weapon done before moving on to other, more relaxed duties.

It was, as per usual for the time, fairly quiet, with only very few early risers out on the field. Finn wasn't particularly a fan of training against dummies, having used them when his weapon still felt new in his hands, when he had still been completely green to this entire thing. Now, however? Now fighting against a dummy was so boring, so ridiculously redundant. It was really, just completely pointless. Like any adversary he might come up against was ever going to just stand still and let him hit it!

So, he did what he usually did, and scoped out somebody to be his opponent for the morning. Just a light spar to get the blood pumping.

Oh look, a complete hobo.

Spotting a man that appeared fairly bedraggled and that wasn't too far off, and looked to be...struggling somewhat with his practice dummy, Finn sauntered over towards him.

"Hey there!" He greeted him, in a rather cheerful tone of voice, one that really did not match his cold gaze in the slightest, or the half smile that quirked across his face. "You wouldn't happen to be interested in a spar, would you? I find practicing with these dummies to be such a ridiculous notion."

Taym jumped, hard, as soon as he was addressed. He looked about as sleepless as Finn felt, and apparently one of the side effects of this--and the nicotine deprivation, if only Finn knew it--was that his usual state of nerves-on-high-alert was amplified to levels reminiscent of a shaken deer. He mastered himself quickly, though, giving Finn a flat, leery look.

That was distinctly animal too. This guy would be more at home in a zoo than anywhere, maybe.

"The thought had crossed my mind too," he said warily, and he eyed Finn's hands for an instant before returning to the stare. Taym stared too much or avoided eyes altogether, and for now it was a stare like he had something to prove. He absolutely did not want to fight. He absolutely would not say no. He bought a second of time to recoup, falling back on self-deprecation: "You're not going to get anything like an education off of me," he said drily. "But I'll try not to fall over in the first few seconds."

Up close, this guy looked a lot rougher then he had from a distance, and the distance hadn't exactly been kind either. Finn raised his eyebrows just slightly as the man jumped, and he took in his appearance without a blink. He actually looked a lot like the moon hunter felt most mornings after a restless nights sleep, but god damn, he hoped somebody put him out of his misery swiftly if he ever chose to let it show like this man did. What kind of people was this island in the habit of employing, anyways?

Maybe he had been wrong to assume this guy was a hunter. Maybe this was just the maintenance man.

But no, he held a knife in his hand, and even as unassuming as it was, it still glowed with runes, and was likely just as powerful as Finn's lance, even despite it's small size.

The flat look Finn received met cold eyes that's appearance never seemed to warm, no matter how angry or happy the moon hunter felt. It was just his way of not showing too much, of not letting others see inside of him. A defense mechanism of sorts, and as a moon hunter, Finn was allegedly all about the defense.

He scoffed a laugh at the other mans response. "Hey, I'm probably just as new here as you. And if there's one thing I've come to understand, it's to never underestimate my opponents abilities."

He held out a gloved hand, baring teeth in a wide grin, while cold eyes continued to calculate and Finn continued to judge this man based solely on his appearance alone. "Finn Connor, Moon division."

He hesitated before he took it, but he did, and his skinny fingers had a surprisingly firm grip. "Obadiah Thompson," he said. "Death division." And he said that defensively. He'd already dealt with several people making comments in response to that little tidbit, and was feeling oddly territorial about it.

Maybe before he'd arrived at the conclusion that he was being saddled with a reputation by virtue of his division he'd have tried to get in a cheap, early shot. He didn't, this time. Just a cheap one.

"Why waste time?" he asked, with a sudden grin that, like Finn's, didn't touch his eyes. That and the sudden withdrawing, the whip-quick movement backwards, was as much warning as he felt like giving.

That was enough warning though, apparently. The upward swing of his arm--with a weapon designed to stab, not to slice--ended up sailing through thin air. Not fast enough. He bit back a curse of frustration.

There was no jabs from Finn when it came to what division his soon to be opponent for the morning came from. He was only on friendly terms with one, and that was a trainee by the name of Ripley. Anything else he knew or heard about the Death division had been through the grapevine, and Finn didn't put much weight into things that came to him second or third hand.

He would come to his own conclusions based on his own experiences, as he always did. Just as he would soon come to a conclusion about this man, as he watched him carefully, all smiles and cold eyes, studying every movement, every small feature. He took in his posture, the way he held himself, his shabby appearance, and the way he smiled in much the same way Finn did, and he had to wonder if it was for the same reason, and if so, what exactly was this other man trying to hide.

He also made a mental note that reached far into the negative spectrum when Mr. Obadiah Death Division took a swipe at him with his knife, before Finn even had his own weapon summoned to hand. Instantly, roaring filled his ears, as Trynt demanded to be set loose, to bite, to tear into this man who would attack before Finn was even ready.

Calm down, you dumb lizard. If that's the way he wants to play, that's his prerogative. Besides, I wouldn't be so eager if I was you. He looks like he would taste absolutely vile.

Still grinning, he took a step back and leaned away from the slash, and suddenly, a long lance with an arc of bladed magenta and white spikes was held in his hand. Trynt hadn't exactly gotten the joke, and was still snarling and thrashing about in his head, demanding, pushing, needing. Finn didn't see much point in denying him what his weapon so desired, and soon was bringing it up so that it's blades were above it's shoulder, before his second hand gripped the shaft, and then his first hand was sliding back towards his second as he brought the weapon up and back down again in a swift motion not unlike one might use to chop wood, aimed for the other mans shoulder.

He really didn't feel like there was any reason to speak, at this point.

Taym clearly disagreed, finding it on the whole much easier to focus (and, if we're being honest, refrain from letting panic and a powerful flight instinct taking hold) while he was running his mouth, at least occasionally. He treated Finn to an impressive array of curses when the staggering blow hit, and nipped back in with a deft little twist of the knife that hit home but without half the force behind it.

"I thought Moon was defensive. Like getting hit with a ********' sack of batteries."

He started to initiate his usual dart-back-out recoil, only to realize that with Finn's weapon this might actually be the least wise course of action and stay where he was, all wary, stray-dog crouching.

"No hard feelings on the jump, right? Not like it did me any good." Another hollow grin.

The other man was quick, much quicker then Finn was really expecting, and the knifes blade flashed in his eyes for just an instant before it struck the moon hunter in the side, providing a sharp sting of pain regardless of a Fear shield to block out any actual physical damage. He jumped to the side, swinging his lance down slightly as though to fend off his attacker, but it was too little to late as he had already jumped back into an almost animal like slinking position, reminding him of something almost feral.

He was beginning to wonder if this guy was even all there in the head.

Holding his lance in two hands, he circled, warily, keeping a close eye on his opponent should he be struck out at again.

"Ya, the first line of defense. Up there with those sun hunters, watching their asses." And what a fine lot of asses some of them had to watch! It was equal parts amazing and incredibly emasculating just how many pretty faces their were in that bad a** division. "But that doesn't mean I shouldn't know how to utilize my weapon efficiently in all aspects." He shrugged, making his point by making a sudden jab at the other man.

As for the other thing.

"Nah, of course, it's no big deal man. You were just trying to get the upper hand early on, am I right?" It was hard to tell if Finn genuinely didn't care about the sudden attack or not, given that his expression never changed in the slightest.

"I am reliably informed," he answered, with a leery sideways circling just out of reach, "although I lack the personal experience to verify the intelligence, that we can expect to have the enemy getting the jump on us more or less always. I'm aiming for realism." Sure, that sounded good to him.

Another quick snaking-in, another liquid movement of his arm, but it became obvious quickly that this one was destined to miss, and he was slipping right back away again. He was too nervous, too blade-shy, to make good use of the obvious slippery-eel qualities he possessed. It was hurting him now, it had hurt him before, and it would continue to hurt him if he didn't man up.

Finn's own teeth flashed as his face pulled into a grin, but it was not exactly a friendly one. Not when combined with the coldness in his gaze. It was more like he was just simply baring them, like a wolf might while in the midst of a tussle. When the other man moved forward, Finn jumped away, back arching as he brought in his stomach. The other man was quick but seemed to perhaps be holding back just a touch, just enough for Finn himself to stay ahead of him.

"Ah yes. Realism." His words were smooth, neutral, with not a single note of anger or annoyance. If anything, there might have been just a hint of amusement instead.

"Realistically, if I were faced with a deranged looking mutt, I would likely aim for the head." He swung his lance up, then around, turning it so the flat of the blade might have a chance to connect to it's target, it's path aligned to strike the other man against the side of his head if he didn't move quick enough or block the attack with his arm.

< Finn. You are doing well and I am charged.> The voice of his weapon snarled in his mind, elated to be able to drink in so much Fear.

Good.
