There was a song his grandfather would often sing, and he had learned at a young age to hammer out on the guitar, much to the older man's glee. He woke up with it stuck in his head.

After forcing down some rations and a nice hot cup of coffee, he sat out in the sunshine on the grass, legs folded and guitar at the ready as he tried to remember the chords, tweaking the words as he sang loudly and with bright enthusiasm,

"And it's one, two, three!
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, an' don't bring me down!
Next stop is Halloween Town;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die!"

Taym had actually dozed off sitting up. He was never good at getting adequate sleep in the first place, and the past several days had been considerably worse.

Dozing outside in the sun against the wall of a building was old hat. It wasn't pleasant exactly, but it was familiar and it was sleep of a sort, and so when it was interrupted so violently by the music coming off the lawn he was immediately disinclined to friendly overtures. The split second it took him to take in the image that was the back of Jerry's head was enough to cement his opinion that whoever this a*****e was, he hated him. A lot.

"Bad place for ********' busking," he barked irritably. "No one has cash."

Really aside from the setting, this could have been lifted off nearly any busy city street: a guy whose clothes were falling apart, who was nursing a three-day beard and looked like he desperately needed a meal, heckling a nerdy-looking guy with a guitar. Heckling street performers was old hat too. All he needed was a dog, or a cardboard sign, or a cigarette. Scene complete.

Jerry stopped his playing with a sharp, "Oh!" Before turning to the guy he hadn't even noticed. He was proud of himself for remembering the word 'busking' from Rep, giving a short laugh, "Oh, I'm not looking for spare change, but donations are always welcome! Gotta' keep up our spirits, right? Ahahaha..." His own beard was growing impressive, if it hadn't half been swallowed by the patchy half of his face marred in their twisting burn scars.

Periods of living in bunkers was something familiar to him at this point, at least.

He figured the irritated trainee was likely in the same boat. "You're new!" It wasn't a question, and judging by the light suddenly in the other skinny man's eyes behind his glasses, an exciting proclamation.

He took a moment to consider this, a flat stare leveled at Jerry. It was uncannily like a slinking dog eyeing a pedestrian through a fence, hackles raised but silent.

"You can tell because I still have my entire face," he deadpanned pointedly.

What could be seen of Jerry's face flushed and he raised a hand to pick at a cheek, "Ahahahah... Just give it time and maybe you'll be as handsome as me!"

Taym's thesis that everyone on Deus was insane was rapidly accruing new supporting evidence.

"One can only be so optimistic," he said. "Would throwing myself into a meat grinder help? Or did you get those from unhappy audiences? Probably best not to subject a crew of mentally unstable professional killers with enormous weapons to your warbling too frequently."

Jerry gave Taym a very long look, his smile fading slightly, but not into a frustrated frown, but a concerned flat line. "You should have seen what really did it." He could only remember that mission in a blur, but the hulking shape of that massive monster that had, by all intents and purposes, killed him, remained firmly in his mind.

"Everyone's a critic," He finally shrugged, going back to plucking at a few chords again, "I could take a request if that sort of thing isn't your speed?" The smile returned with renewed enthusiasm. "Good luck finding a radio that works around here, otherwise!"

Taym delivered a sentence of raw blasphemy: "I was never much of a music fan."

He hesitated, though. And then closed his mouth.

"Ooooh, that's unfortunate! You know I do offer lessons if you're interested - no power for my keyboard and my ahhhh," he drooped with a crestfallen expression, "Uke is um... In need of repair but I've got a harmonica-" or two, although he was not about to lend out his special harmonica to just anyone, "and my guitar at the moment! What division are you?"

he leaned around to see if he could spot a mark on a coat.

By way of answer he obligingly lifted the bottom hem of his coat. Pair of scythes. Somehow he looked like a good fit for that. He looked... sneaky. And possibly as unstable as he was accusing everyone else of being. His hands moved in a strange and vaguely arachnid way.

"Lessons," he said, with a thread of incredulity in his voice. "What the hell's an uke?" And then a lifetime of crossword puzzles jogged him. "Short for ukelele. Right. Jesus Christ. I didn't know anyone actually played a ukelele outside of tourist traps in Hawaii." Poor ignorant b*****d had clearly never ventured very far into Youtube.

(Not that kind of uke. The other kind.)

"Yeah, yeah! Lessons! Lots of people take me up on it!" or at least Gale had. "Its real important to have a healthy hobby around here or you get a little," he hesitated, motioning around his ear with a finger before settling for a diplomatic, "Stir crazy ahaha." His smile brightened, though, beaming excitedly at the trainee, "You've got the hands for instruments, though! Nice long fingers, don't think I missed that fidgeting! I bet you have great dexterity! Oh! Forgive me! I'm Jerry, Jerry Collins, sun hunter! Awoowoowoo and all that!" he quickly wiped his sweaty palm on his grubby blood and mud stained coat and offered it out to shake.

Great dexterity. Now would have been a great time for his hand tremors to manifest, so naturally, they didn't. Steady as a rock, right up until he needed them to be.

He looked at Jerry's hand, looked at the coat he'd wiped it on that had probably just made it dirtier than it already was, and extracted a toothpick from his pocket instead of offering him a handshake.

"A little stir crazy," he repeated blandly. "You don't say. I'd never have noticed. I suppose your guitar and your ukelele keep you totally sane."

"Oh, yeah," he took his hand back awkwardly, expression softened slightly, "W-well, I've had my ups and downs.. But currently yeah, yeah I think I'm pretty okay. What I wouldn't give for a proper vacation let me tell you! Ahaha, b-but better to the strings than to the bottle, right?"

Sudden, creeping guilt. Couldn't fault a man for finding an alternative. Sure, Taym's alternative had been signing his life away to go get eaten by werewolves or something, but music was... valid. Whatever it takes, Jerry.

Taym suddenly leaned forward, looking to the left, looking to the right, searching ahead of both of them. There was no one around.

Conspiratorially, he said: "Do you know Year of the Cat?" Hastily, he added: "It's a yes or no question, not an invitation."

"Year of the Cat, Year of the Cat..." Jerry repeated, mumbling under his breath as he shifted to face his new friend a lot easier, his expression in deep concentration, "If... if you sang it, I could probably figure out the chords with your direction!" That was a better answer than saying he had no idea.

He felt like he had let the guy down, but tried his best to keep the guilt off of his face. "You never said your name, friend!"
