We've all had our fair share of horrible arrangements. Discuss your experiences in this new topic.

I have a pretty open mind when it comes to playing music. I dont really like playing watered down versions of great songs.

The worst band arrangement I have ever played was "the Beatles' Medley". It was a poor mixture of very simple melodies and horrible harmonies. But in the end, I was comissioned to write another arrangement. Actually, now that I think of it, it was pretty good because I was paid a fair bit of money. mrgreen

#1. We played five or six songs for the nationals last year, and ALL except one was by this guy. who happens to write terribly boring piano parts. So I was either really bored/left with a LOT of creative control. I forget his name though, which is bad, I have to be able to avoid it.
I'm sure I'll recognize it if I see it again though.
And to be fair, the rest of the band's parts were fine.
#2. Our R&B band director bought a couple of pieces from a local arranger.
TERRIBLE.
I mean, they just SUCK. There's always harmonies we have to change, melodies that aren't played by the right people.. He wrote the entire rythm section part for one song (The Impression That I Get) in one four time??!? everyone else being in four four??!. Anyway, that was the end of dealing with him.

Sounds horrible with that rhythm part. One four? While the rest is four four? What's up that? Are you absolutely sure that this guy was a professional arranger?

it wasn't a bad arrangement, but my highschool's Moonlight Serenade would have been so much better if I wasn't the only sax who could use vibrato : (
Oh, and in general, the Bb Real Book 5th Edition (not the Hal Leonard one)is crap. And speaking of the Real Book, did anyone ever notice that Windows is a half step off? My friend swears by that, but I don't know.

Most professional arrangers know that it's crap and that's why they make better arrangements of it. I've done it

The Bb one is disgusting. It rarely ever marks key changes, it just has a lot of accidentals. Sometimes it'll even leave some of them out. My combo has all three of the original 5th and a hal-leonard one for the bassist.
We all agree that the Bb has the worst notation. Cept for the Eb, a lot of stuff in there is writting smaller.
I've got a notebook where I transcribed easier to read arrangements.

From the real book, you could easily make arrangements for a jazz combo, jazz ensemble or the big band.
