We are back at the wide training fields of the Stationary Squad specially sectioned off for the new cadets.

Part of this is a smaller courtyard area where there are ten large wooden frames have been erected in a neat line with a peculiar array of wires on them.

This is where Cadets are tested to see if they are capable of using the new 3DMG by examining their ability to keep their balance when 'wired up'.

Those unable to do so cannot expect to be able to confront and fight Titans anymore.

"Happiness can exist only in acceptance."- George Orwell

Peter had woken up early that morning, the day after his introduction to the 2nd Cadet Legion and the newest Cadets hoping to join one of the military's three famous Legions. It was certainly getting rather brisk. Autumn had come rather early this year and he wondered if this would have any impact of their reserves of food, indeed, on their rations. Well, if ti did, there was certainly little he could do about it. Rather, what he was doing now was actually part of solving this everlasting problem: if they could finally finish Wall Maria, then the lands between the two outer Walls would be completely safe and Humanity could grow more crops quicker and better without threat. Bringing in and training up new cadets in order to protect the worker on Wall Maria was all part of this job.

But he knew full well that most of the cadets he trained would not survive even the first mission, even if they did pass training.

This was not due to the fact that he did not do his job well. He made a point of turning out highly qualified cadets; he could not look himself in the mirror if he did not, and even like this it was a trail sometimes. It was more due to the nature of the Titans themselves. Not only was the fact that they ate humans alive simply horrendous, nor the fact that while they looked human enough to make a person think they should have some inkling of intelligence about them, but did not, but there was something inherently terrifying about them. It seemed to be a sort of primordial instinct from the base of the human brain which kicked in and sent an almost nauseating shock through your body and soul upon coming fact to face with them; for the first time, certainly.

Some people overcame this through sheer will, other buckled and folded. And one could never know which type the cadet standing before one with fierce eyes and a determined brow would be. It call came out when push came to shove.

With a bit of experience, Peter had found, you could wager an educated guess upon this matter, but it was not an absolute thing. There were still times when he was dead wrong and a cadet died. He knew there was not much he could do about this, but it still hurt and felt wrong. Perhaps, he told himself, it would not be such a good thing to feel anything but.

Peter had arrived earlier than the cadets with some of the lower-ranked soldier from his Legion to set up and organize to day's training. He sent his people about with orders as to what needed to be done before the Cadets stumbled in.

XXXXJericho left his house early that morning since he had things to do with his mother. Such as helping with the groceries and yet hearing another plea to be discharged while he still had the chance. After all of his duties were done that morning, he could hear his mothers voice replay over and over again in her head. He rolled his eyes and sighed in frustration. It was pretty cool this morning, and the sun hadn't fully awaken from behind the clouds yet. Jericho's uniform did the job in keeping him warm. Speaking of the uniform, Jericho's life had did a complete 180 after placing it on. Now, when he walks in the streets, people stare and treat him differently. Before, Jericho wouldn't even bother getting a smile from someone, now he'd see up to ten smiles a day. It was pretty bizarre what kind of respect these people got, and Jericho didn't think he'd be so use to it. All he could ever do was awkwardly force a smile back.

Jericho marched his way to the next place of training. He wasn't fully aware of what was going to happen this time, but he expected more pain. After he practically went home that day and bragged everything to his mother, she couldn't help but laugh. Slowly, their bond had been rekindling itself over the years, and you could tell she was happy, and it was never in Jericho to ruin something so rare of seeing nowadays. Interrupting Jericho's bittersweet thoughts were the entrance of the Stationary Guards barracks coming closer. He was eligible of entering such grounds because of his insignia and identification. After a couple of more minutes he slowly made his way to the yard that was marked for their meeting. He entered the yard, seeing a couple of other cadets already there. Just as he entered, he froze in his steps looking at the large wooden frames that towered on the yard, "What are those?" Jeircho said to himself as he continued walking closer. However, this time, Jericho stood in a position that wouldn't have to cause the sergeant to scream at his poor formation.

Peter looked over to the first cadet who had arrived on the scene of the new day. Behind him, his subordinates were busily putting up the testing scaffolds and running over everything three times to make sure everything was lined up right, the wires had the correct tension, were untangled and that everything was bolted into place as it should be. It simply would not do to have anything less than perfect equipment; this was something that was drilled into people in the army: either you looked after your gear, of you paid the price.

"Firstly, Cadet Pouge," Peter replied, raising an eyebrow and crossing his arms over his wide chest. "I hope that was simply a slip of the tongue you will undoubtedly apologize for, as you should know full well that when addressing another military personnel, especially a superior officer, you must use the correct title, in this case 'Sergeant Franz' and/or 'sir'."

This was a necessity, as, just like any other military organization, the 'pecking order' had to be established and established as soon as possible. Out on the field, there was no democracy, there simply was no time to huddle into groups and discuss things over a tea and a biscuit. The Titans would not wait conveniently for that to happen, so it was best to squash such misconceptions before anyone got any 'smart' ideas. The ranks were there for a reason, and people acquired those ranks for very good reasons.

Luckily for Cadet Pouge, Peter was not the sort to get really nasty about such things...unless he had to repeat them too often. For a drill sergeant, Peter was pretty laid-back and nice. There were plenty of officers who would have made the kid eat his words to drive the point home. Peter disliked wasting energy like that, he was happy with civil-like talk, unless he was faced with a wise-a**. Then things usually got ugly.

"Secondly," he continued, keeping a sharp eye on Cadet Pouge. "Those will be used for testing your abilities for using the 3DMG, now a required piece of equipment with the military, though we do not use it, at least not without permission, in-city. It is nothing more than a web of wires, but we'll be going through what you have to do there soon enough, at any rate. First up, you'll be doing one-on-one drills with your cadet-mates once they get here."

Peter looked about sharply, then sniffed, making his nose-ring swing.

"But as you're here so bright and early," he added, grinning, "You have the honor of helping out, like a smart cadet. You lucky bugger. Shove off over to that station and help Corporal Wallis with those logs. You need to move them from the wagons there to those assembling the scaffold over there. Get a move on!"

Hiro would enter on to the field, his face alight with curiosity and amusement. It was finally time for him to get a look at the second cadets and from what he had heard they were very impressive, so he really did have high hopes. As he found himself a place to sit he spotted Peter giving orders, another person he had yet to meet but was hoping he would be able to eventually, and a cadet who had arrived quite early. Arriving on time was important but getting there early just made it a bit better. The king himself didn't stand out to far from the typical, although the fact that he was much older looking as well as not wearing any typical military uniform gave it away somewhat. At the moment he wore a white robe with a black chest plate. Okay maybe he did stand out but it wouldn't be right away. The biggest change he had even done was the fresh new scar across his face, something he would only ever mention as a painful lesson.

The king however made no motion to talk to either of them, instead he sat cross legged on a nearby rock and just watched them. It was what he had done in the first training session and what he planned to do now. Whether it was to gain information on the cadets or simply to avoid causing them distraction he didn't really know yet but enjoyed it none the less.

XXXXOnce Jericho heard his surname shouted by his sergeant, he overreacted, watching his male adviser with widened eyes. It appeared that he had an issue with not being properly greeted, and Jericho could understand that. However, Jericho couldn't help but examine his septum moving around with his flaring nose as he spoke. Anyway, he knew he was suppose to properly salute Mr. Fr--Sergeant Franz, but it slipped his mind. Hopefully this would be the only time that'd ever happen. Jericho felt awful and wiped off the sudden smirk that appeared for a brief second. With an apology, Jericho stood erected, having both his fists balled up. Placing his right fist on his chest and bending his left arm to his back, he spoke, "I apologize Sergeant Franz, sir..." Unfortunately, he lacked much strength in his voice, therefore it wasn't technically a shout; more like a raised voiced. He folded is lips inward in slight embarrassment. Returning his face back to normal, he walked off after being ordered to help a solider named, "Corporal Wallis". He looked over and noticed the man standing with his arms crossed, waiting for him after hearing the command. Personally, he felt good of being of some usage. He walked off closer to Corporal Wallis and followed him to the wagon. Just as the Corporal did, Jericho attempted to pull the large log off of the wagon. Of course he did it roughly at first, but he did a nifty job on carrying it over his shoulder. He walked off, feeling like he was actually getting a duty done.

✧ Waking rather early this day, Raya gave herself a proper breakfast, fashioned her hair in a neat braided bun, and even donned her uniform. Tidying her room, she browsed it over one last time before firmly nodding. Snatching a pear before closing the door, she strutted out of the dorm and headed towards the new training area. She saw a bunch of posts out and about, and for a moment she was confused. It wasn't until she saw the glint of metal did she understand. " Oh yeah. The wire thingys." Humming to herself, Raya looked around and smiled gently at the trees. The leaves were beginning to change, the air was crisp in the morning and humid in the afternoon. You could get away with a sweater in the morning, but would die of heatstroke come 3pm. Spotting the training Sergeant, she walked up to record her attendance. " Good morning Sergeant Franz! I hope you rested well. My apologies about my lack of uniform yesterday, I made sure to get it right today." As if he couldn't see already, Raya did a small twirl to show off just how fabulous she looked in the uniform. The pants fit her rump just right, and the white shirt made her bust look a cup bigger than it actually was.

During her flowery twirl Raya noticed another man. No, not the other Cadet, but the other guy. He had quite the impressive scar on his face, but the lack of colour to his attire made her curious. "Hey Sarge. Who's that?" She asked, pointing to the man with white robes. Was he a priest? A Captain like the old man? The thought of the geezer made her shiver and cross her arms. If another man clung to her like that again, they would find one of her knives in his ribcage instead of an elbow.

"Happiness can exist only in acceptance."- George Orwell

Peter immediately noticed His Majesty enter the area. This rather annoyed him; like his Captain, he firmly believed that Royalty had no business whatsoever nosing about the place while their subjects went about fulfilling their orders. It was, he felt, a mater of trust.

However, he really was in no position to even suggest such a thing, and his Captain would be ticked if he got himself arrested or anything. But he did feel harassed.

The real problem Peter had with Royalty, he realized, was that you could not just go up to them, punch them in the face and say 'yeah? you and whose army?' because they knew. It was like cheating; being thoroughly unfair and no fun at all. And the institution was not all that attractive for Peter, either. Why would someone have rights over him just because his great-great-granddad was a bigger murderous b*****d than his own?

Naturally, Peter never mentioned such things, but he often thought them rather strongly.

So, as His Majesty did not make any fuss of his appearance, Peter guessed that it was safe enough to act as if he had not noticed, the sort of game he despised above all else. Peter was about as straight-forward and honest as a plank of wood; as such he treated politicians and any other such people of highly dubious moral nature with great distrust, having been duped by people like these a number of times during his younger years.

Peter disliked lies, however, he had never needed them, as when one is built like and ox with fists that could bring down a wall if he wanted to, one did not have to resort to lies in order to protect oneself.

"Carry on, Cadet Pouge," he said, nodding in satisfaction at the dark-haired cadet as he went off to carry out his orders.

He then turned and had to take a big breath to stop from actually blushing as he found himself very close to the female cadet, Cadet Jackonai, who had been flaunting underwear yesterday.

"Just make sure it doesn't happen again." Was about all he could manage as he took a step back, while trying to look as though he was not trying to back away, while compromising his authority. With his brow drawn ferociously, and making his nose-ring swing while snorting in a disturbed manner, he looked more bull-like than usual. "We are a military, not a fashion show!"

He then blinked as the girl changed the subject.

"You'll mind your tongue, Cadet Jackonai, if you wish to keep it!" He snapped in an undertone. "That is His Majesty, King Hiro I. Do not call attention to him, unless he wants to be noticed, understand?"

Peter then realized that he was very close to the girl again, and was a hair's breath from blushing again, and straightened, snorting and shaking his Mohawk-ed head in self-derision.

"Where are your cadet fellows?" He asked sternly, changing the subject was quickly as he could, trying his best to make it seem as if he was not desperately trying to do so.

When he had reached home, Joshua vigilantly skipped over the fact that his problem with heights put a damper on his first day of training. His parents were already well aware of their son's fear, they'd probably guessed by now that yes, there are going to be high obstacles. They'd also learned that trying to convince Joshua to drop his ambitions was all but vain, and could only watch him go about his business in silent squalor. At least completing the course wasn't required to pass--but it would have been nice.

The next morning, he awoke rather early, but didn't rush to get up and start the day. Beds were cruel like that; they were so warm and comfortable, but made it so hard to willingly leave such a comfort. When he finally did, Joshua peeked his head outside to check how warm the day would be--it was chillier than he liked by far, but in a few hours a full sweater would probably be a bad idea. So instead, he chose a long sleeved shirt--why were almost all his shirts grey?--and donned his uniform over it. Like always, he wore his scarf as well. Breakfast consisted of toast and a small bowl of vegetable soup, which pleased Joshua a small but needed amount. There wasn't much time to do any leisure activities like play his walkdzither, so he simply tuned it, strummed a quick tune then laid it back in its place and marched out the door.

His mind was blank on the way to the training grounds. People gave him looks, but he didn't care to figure what kinds. Now that he was wearing the military's garb, people were going to outright love him, or loathe him.

Spotting the marked area for today's drills, Joshua fixed his posture and took on a less relaxed pace. He had little care to make a good impression, but he cared even less for getting yelled at by a cow. Ah--speak of the devil, there he was! "Good morning, Sergeant Franz," he greeted, then turned his head to nod to Raya, "And to you, too."

Glancing about, he only spotted one other Cadet, and that was the Pogue boy, who was helping someone of higher rank with logs. The structures about the field weren't as intimidating as the Maze, thank goodness, but Joshua could only hope to goodness they weren't supposed to climb them. There was someone that stood out to Joshua significantly: a robed man. He tilted his head as he looked the stranger up and down, but did not bring it up in conversation.

✧ Sergent Franz's reaction to her arrival was simply darling. Never before had a male stepped back so suddenly. Crossing her arms and raising a brow, her silver eyes looked Franz over and a teasing smile came to her lips. " My my. What a beautiful young bull. I'm sure we can expect many young from this one. " She giggled in her most hillbilly voice she could muster. His sudden comment about her tongue threw dozens of ideas into her head, but when he told her that the man she spotted was the king, all nasty retorts evaporated from her head. She looked at the King again, this time studying him a little more carefully, but the distance made it a little hard. " He's kinda good looking.. " She thought aloud.

Hearing Franz's snort her playful side came back, and she turned her body so she was facing him. Listening to the question about the other Cadets she shrugged with her arms crossed under her chest. "I dunno. I didn't see anyone coming out of the girls side." As she fell into silence once more her mind started brainstorming ideas on how she could bug the Sarge relentlessly. Was he that unused to females? A playful smile infected her face. Just then, Joshua came into the yard. In a way, he saved darling SPF from her teasing flirtations. Yes, she knew that if she bugged Peter enough she could very well be doing laps, but hey, it would totally be worth it. Waving to Josh when she first saw him, she put her hands behind her back and rocked back and forth from the balls of her feet to her toes as she waited for him to come over. When he said his greetings, Raya let forth a dazzling smile and tilted her head. "Hullo Josh! Didja sleep alright?"

"Happiness can exist only in acceptance."- George Orwell

Peter went a deep red, then purple then a colour pretty much indescribable, but probably best approximated in the following manner.

Take an eggplant.

Paint this eggplant black.

Throw this now-painted eggplant into a black hole.

See?

That's the colour Peter turned as he caught the gist of what Cadet Jackonai was saying and the manner in which she said it. If the expression 'livid' ever had a perfect colour associated with it, that would be Peter's face at this moment. It was basically a definition of 'livid' and this was when those who knew him well enough knew to start running. Things were going to get very ugly very quickly.

While Peter had a long tether, most amiable and calm (you really had to be next to Captain Farqua, his commanding officer), somehow the little jibes that he seemed to ignore for all that time appeared to suddenly reach critical level, and he exploded. As he did now.

"Cadet Jackonai!" He barked in a manner that made a few of the corporals a few feet away jump, "100 push ups on the double!"

He then swung around at Joshua, who was just as good as any victim to target while on a rampage.

"Cadet Urquhart! You too!"

Anyone else caught late before he calmed would most likely suffer in a similar manner. Of course there was the danger of the cadets not understanding that while talking back to Peter was more or less accepted by him, once you past the 'acceptable' for him, even looking at him slightly awry would mean a punishment like a ton of boulders to put them back into place.

This was the persona Peter's friends called the Dark Prater, or 'Dark Father', playing a word game not only on his name, but his, at times, almost priestly serenity and modesty which was a main part of his basic character.

XXXXAs Jericho continued to work help out the other cadets, he noticed that Raya had entered the field a little afterward he did. Fortunate for her, she was wearing her full uniform this time. Frankly, she looked much prettier in her skirt, but she was able to pull off both looks. As Jericho had placed down one long, she walked back across towards the wagon for another. Of course, he still did some more examining. Even though, Jericho had seen him earlier, it just crossed Jericho's mind that the man in the white cloak didn't look like your casual guard. In fact, he looked like a priest of some sort. He noticed Raya examine the guard, which was what put most of his attention back on him anyhow.

Jericho slowed down more a moment, but with a whistle from Corporal Wallis he got his attention back on track. He hauled the log over his shoulder and continued walking. There was very few logs left, and Jericho honestly hoped that it was because he made a great contribution by helping out. Slightly glancing over again Jericho noticed that Joshua entered right after. From the looks of it, Raya and Joshua were both friends as well.

Assuming that things were going great so far, Jericho turned to see how many more logs he and the others had to carry back. It wasn't much. Therefore, Jericho probably could go back to where his Sergeant and the other cadets were. However, he, and other countless guards jumped by the sound Sergeant Franz roar. He heard the male adviser order Raya to do one hundred push ups, and in anger, he commanded Joshua do the same. "Uh, how about I just continue with these logs..." Jericho thought to himself. By the look on Wallis' face, it was like he was a mind reader and let out a soft chuckle at Jericho's reaction.

Hiro watched in amusement as a few of the cadets who arrived seemed to notice him, one not going so much as to ask though well another seemed to miss him all entirely. He didn't make much movement for a while, preferring to watch the cadets interplay and talk with one another. It was so interesting seeing it all from a distance. The silver haired girl seemed to have a contrasting side, going from curiosity to flirty and vibrant, suggesting she had some quirks to her. Another arrived who seemed to be more, what would you call it, intellectual. He did see the king but the curiosity never seemed to get farther then that as he went back to interacting with the others.

Finally there was the Sergeant who seemed to be falling to the silver ones jab. The joy of seeing a young man flustered never failed to amuse Hiro, it was one thing almost all men shared amongst each other. When he started shouting at the cadets to do a large amount of push ups the king would take that as his que to enter.

Briskly he would walk over, a smile spread across his face as he approached the small group. "It's good to see that our military isn't completely non human. Just because you got embarrassed by this pretty young women doesn't mean you have to make them all suffer, though I suppose the exercise is always good" he said rubbing his chin in fake thought.

Giving the comment time to sink in for a bit he would continue, hoping that the sergeant wouldn't be completely cheesed off at him. "Anyways. Might I be introduced to this new group of cadets? For all of you to know I am Hiro Kuki, it is a pleasure to meet the future of our military" he said to them all, a bright smile on his face.

"Happiness can exist only in acceptance."- George Orwell

Peter, whose face was a dark in colour as previously described, was in this state more because of His Majesty's presence than anything else. To him, it was rather impugning his pride as a drill sergeant that his superior did not seem to respect his ability to do his job. Though Peter did not think of himself as a 'real' military person, not a 'real' soldier, this apparent questioning of his ability was something his 'inner military self' was having a very hard time swallowing. Namely, no 'swallowing' was happening, but an all-out inferno of rage.

If one added to this that Peter seriously disliked, privately, of course, the aristocracy and the royal family especially, then one could imagine his delight in having the King himself paying him a social visit.

His training kicked in, which was always a good cover for real emotions and thoughts, and Peter ripped off a salute.

"Yessir!" He snapped, bellowing like an ox. "Cadets assemble!"

XXXXJericho heard his command to fall in meanwhile he was already carrying a log over his shoulder. Looking in complete hesitation, he was saved by Corporal Wallis, who took his log from him and gave him a farewell. Jericho walked off from his position and power walked to where his Sergeant and the other cadets were. As he neared the cadet duo he greeted both of them with a small smirk and stood beside them. He was unaware if "assemble" meant he had to do the proper salute, but if he were wrong, Sergeant Franz would just have to correct him again. So Jericho stood firmly and stared straight praying on the inside that he didn't do anything wrong.
